OKLAHOMA SOONERS TO PLAY IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SEMIFINAL The College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee announced its final top 25 rankings for 2017, along with matchups for the Playoff Semifinals and New Year’s bowls. The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma Sooners will face off against No. 3 Georgia on Monday, January 1, in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual at 6 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. The Allstate Sugar Bowl will follow at 7:45 p.m as No. 4 Alabama plays No. 1 Clemson. The winners of the Playoff Semifinals will advance to the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship. NEWLY RESTORED SANTA FE STATION NOW OPEN An open house was held December 9 for the 80-year-old, historic Santa Fe Station, 100 S E.K. Gaylord Blvd. The station has been restored to its former opulence and will serve as Oklahoma City’s multimodal transportation hub. The recently completed $28.4 million renovation helped restore original architectural and design elements of the station, improve the boarding platforms and other passenger areas and enhance the streetscape on E.K. Gaylord between Reno Avenue and Main Street. Santa Fe Station is the northernmost station on Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer route, which runs between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth with stops in Norman,

The station was built in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1934. The station’s architecture and interior epitomize the art deco era with carved and painted geometric designs, period chandeliers and aluminum canopies, door and window frames.

A NEW SHADE OF GRAY The home, a large traditional French-style home on the exterior, needed a modern interior, according to the new homeowner. Ray the Painter refinished the kitchen walls and cabinets in a lighter, violet-gray and refinished the kitchen island and vent hood, which also had a spice rack built into it. “It was a very cool vent hood,” Amy says. “We refinished that large hood vent over the stove in a creamy white and then painted the island to a matching gray for the rest of the kitchen.” A hutch in the dining room was changed from a blue color to a caviar shade, and the adjoining utility room was also given a matching shade of gray to complement the kitchen. “We also did all the walls to match an existing navy blue accent wall in the workout room, and painted the upstairs bathroom as well,” she says. “I think we were in there for about 10 days.” Working with the paint experts means more than just picking out colors, however. “When we work with customers, we get with them to discover their style, what they do like in the home and what they want to work on,” she says. “Grays are really popular now, and so is navy blue. The reputation of many is to enthusiastically sign up for a gym membership in January and quit by February. It’s true that exercise requires time and effort and that many products exist to draw us away from the commitment to work out. Foods like ice cream or a warm bialy—aka a fancy doughnut—on a cold morning come to mind. But smiles aren’t always associated with the foods that bring pleasure. WHEN DIANA ACKER OF OKLAHOMA CITY WAS WORKING AS A CONTRACT CASE MANAGER FOR THREE DIFFERENT AGENCIES, SHE KNEW THAT THE STATE BUDGET CUTS WERE LOOMING AND HER POSITION WOULD BE AMONG THOSE SACRIFICED TO THE STATE BUDGET WOES.

She had always had a passion for helping the elderly and volun-

teered for organizations like The Salvation Army, at her church and as an intern for Epworth Villa’s hospice unit. She had a vision of helping the elderly or women in challenging situations with everything from transportation to shopping to household organization. When the cuts went into effect on September 1, she was ready. “I talked about doing this kind of business for years, and it seemed like a good

time to try,” she says. “By this time, I knew I wanted to serve women, and I started out focusing on offering services to elderly women, but I’ve decided to open the ser-

vice for all women, like busy single moms or CEOs or anyone who just needs a little help.” Diana launched Help-Her, a personal aide service that offers everything from house-

hold assistance, house sitting, visitation for the elderly, errand running, organization and mail service to holiday assistance, medical accompaniment and companionship and everything in between. Though a great many of her clients are senior women, she also helps others who are disabled because of car accidents or medical conditions.

“Sometimes they just get so lonely, and they want to do

things like go shopping, eat Mexican food or just go see a movie,” she says. “Sometimes, they just want someone to do something with.”

Diana left her corporate energy job and the 9-to-5

She returned to college to study family studies and gerontology, and she says that training also gives her more to offer her clients. She is also fully insured, bonded and can offer a background check, which some other services don’t offer. “You can hire anyone, but you really want someone who cares when they are coming into your home or working with your loved one,” she says. “It’s a personal aid service with a warm touch. I’m a friend. I’ve had so much feedback about how a service niche like this is needed.”
