Creating Your Sanctuary: Design, Comfort, and Community
Welcome to our March issue! As the seasons begin to shift and the first hints of spring appear, our thoughts naturally turn toward the sanctuary we call home. This month, we invite you to step inside the world of Lori Matlack Interior Design, whose stunning work graces our cover. Lori’s signature clean lines create a space that is effortlessly classy and elegant, yet always manages to feel like a place where you can truly kick off your shoes and stay awhile.
Of course, a beautiful interior needs a solid foundation. That’s where the experts Robert and Kasi Cherry, owners of Premier Contracting, come in. From custom home builds to intricate remodels, they handle every detail with a level of care that treats your project like their own. And because a home only truly hums when everything is working perfectly behind the walls, we’re shining a light on local electrician Lance Bosworth. Known as the "Electricity Whisperer," Lance has a knack for solving those tricky wiring puzzles that keep our homes safe and bright.
While we often think of "home" in terms of what we can see, some of the most important improvements happen on paper. Todd Libby from 3 Keys Lending joins us with helpful pointers on high-end home refinancing to give you peace of mind. And for that immediate boost of joy? Jodi Bachman, owner of Floral Expressions, shares her expertise and personal insight on being a business owner through all the occasions life has to offer. We also spotlight local chef Cornelius Ward at Purple Sky Winery & Restaurant. Cornelius shares his famous soup recipe, Carrot Ginger Soup!
The most vital layer of any home, however, is found in how we care for one another. In this month’s Kindness Chronicles, we feature home builder Steve Pierce, who is leading the Christi Project . Steve is building a new home to be fully wheelchair-friendly for a young woman in our community, proving that a true home is built on compassion.
Finally, we’d like you to meet Ruby. She’s currently at the Weber County Animal Shelter waiting for her own forever home. Whether we are redesigning for accessibility or opening our doors to a shelter pet, home is wherever kindness lives.

A NOTE FROM BOB HARVEY
After Nearly 40 Years, I Still Start Every Job the Same Way
People sometimes ask me what's changed in four decades of roofing. The materials have improved. The tools are better. But the way I approach every roof? That hasn't changed at all.
I still start by looking. Walking the perimeter. Checking the gutters. Looking for the small things—lifted shingles, worn flashing, granules collecting where they shouldn't—before they become big things. It's not complicated. It just takes knowing what to look for.
That's something I've always wanted to share with homeowners. Not to turn everyone into roofers, but because an informed homeowner makes better decisions. They don't get talked into work they don't need. They catch small problems before they're expensive ones. They know when to call someone and when they can wait.
So we built something for you: a simple online assessment that walks you through the same things I look for when I first arrive at a home. Takes about two minutes. At the end, you'll get a personalized checklist for the season ahead—things to keep an eye on, things to address, and things you can stop worrying about.
No sales pitch. No one's going to call you unless you want us to. Just practical knowledge from someone who's spent most of his life on Utah roofs.
Scan the code below, or visit the link. And if what you find makes you want a professional opinion, we're always happy to take a look. That part's free too.

A
letter from Jodi Bachman,
owner and lead designer of Floral Expressions
ARTICLE BY JODI BACHMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER BACHMAN, AMBER TOGISALA, SCOTT & ASHLEE O'MALLEY
For me, flowers have always been about connection—connection to people, to moments, and to the emotions that words sometimes can’t express. That belief is what led me to create Floral Expressions, a business that has been serving our community for the past nine years.
I’m Jodi Bachman, owner and lead designer of Floral Expressions. I’m also a wife to my husband, Adam, and a mom to our five children—roles that have shaped not only who I am but also how I run my business. Balancing family life with entrepreneurship has taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of showing up with intention in everything I do.
Floral Expressions was built on the idea that flowers should feel personal. Whether we’re designing wedding florals, sympathy arrangements, or everyday bouquets, each piece is created with care and thought for the person receiving it. I believe flowers tell stories—of love, loss, celebration, and hope—and it’s an honor to be trusted with those moments.
Being a local business owner means more to me than simply running a shop. It means building relationships, supporting other small businesses, and being present for our community during both joyful milestones and difficult times. Many of our customers have become familiar faces, and that sense of trust and connection is something I value deeply.
I love being part of the most important days in people’s lives. I hold it dear to my heart that they trust me with such meaningful
milestones. In these moments, we witness the most beautiful expressions of love and compassion—friends showing up for one another in times of joy and in moments of suffering. Watching that support unfold is a powerful, ongoing cycle of love.
After nine years, Floral Expressions continues to grow, evolve, and bloom—much like life itself. I’m grateful every day to do work that allows me to create beauty, serve others, and build something meaningful for my family and my community.
From new beginnings to heartbreaking endings, flowers mark life’s moments—offering community, compassion, congratulations, and condolences.
High-End Refinancing: 3 Keys Strategy
Unlocking Value: Navigating High-End Refinancing with 3 Keys Lending
In the complex landscape of luxury real estate, managing a high-end mortgage requires more than just a standard loan—it requires a strategic financial partnership. Under the leadership of owner Todd Libby, 3 Keys Lending has established itself as a premier boutique mortgage firm dedicated to helping homeowners maximize the potential of their most valuable assets.
For owners of high-end homes, refinancing is rarely just about lowering a monthly payment; it is about liquidity, wealth preservation, and long-term financial agility. Todd Libby and his team specialize in navigating the nuances of jumbo loans and bespoke financing packages that traditional big-box banks often overlook. Whether you are looking to take advantage of shifting interest rates or aiming to tap into your home's equity for further investment, 3 Keys Lending provides the expert oversight necessary to execute these high-stakes transactions.
When is the right time to refinance? According to Libby, timing is everything. High-end borrowers should look for "optimization windows" such as:
ARTICLE BY TODD LIBBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR HUNTER YOUNG
• Equity Milestones: If your property value has increased significantly, refinancing can move you from a jumbo loan into more favorable conventional terms.
• Debt Restructuring : Moving from an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) to a fixed-rate loan provides long-term security.
• Cash-Out Opportunities: Tapping into equity at the right moment can provide the capital needed for portfolio diversification or home renovations without the high costs of personal loans.
Beyond financial expertise, 3 Keys Lending is driven by a unique commitment to the community. With every loan closed, the company makes a donation to a local teacher nominated by the client. By choosing to refinance with Todd Libby, homeowners are not only securing their own financial future but also directly supporting a "local hero" in education. This mission ensures that every high-end transaction leaves a lasting, positive impact on the next generation.

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE
ARTICLE BY EMILY FOSTER INTERIORS
INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!
invest inyour living space
There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.
GOOD LIGHTING
It’s imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. Rooms need a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light. Candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.
GREAT TEXTURES
Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.
DECLUTTERING
So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages. You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.

Design that Feels like Home
Design, at its best, doesn’t announce itself—it reveals itself over time. I didn’t come to interior design chasing trends or trying to make a statement. I came to it after a lifetime of noticing how spaces feel—how light shifts throughout the day, how materials age, and how a home quietly supports the lives lived inside it.
Lori Matlack Interior Design is rooted in the belief that a well-designed home doesn’t shout. It settles you. It supports daily rituals. It reflects the people who live there rather than what happens to be popular in the moment.
My work is often described as layered, intentional, and quietly confident. I balance clean lines with warmth, honoring the structure of a home while adding texture, contrast, and depth. Kitchens and baths are where I spend much of my time—they are the hardest-working rooms in a house and deserve both beauty and restraint. I’m especially drawn to patterned tile used thoughtfully: tile that
brings character and rhythm to a space without overwhelming it and that feels timeless rather than trendy.
Before becoming a designer, I spent decades as an educator. That experience shapes how I work today. I listen closely, ask better questions, and guide clients through decisions with clarity and calm— especially when they know what they want to feel but can’t yet visualize the outcome.
I believe good design is about intention, not excess. Choosing fewer elements, chosen well. Creating flow. Allowing a space to breathe. Designing homes that age gracefully and feel grounded long after the project is complete.
Ogden is rich with character and authenticity, and that’s why I love designing here. Whether I’m leading a full remodel or refining a single space, my goal is always the same: to create homes that feel personal, considered, and enduring. Because the best design doesn’t try to impress everyone—it feels right to the people who live there.

MID-CENTURY WARMTH, REIMAGINED
There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.
Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.
“Tackling each space and room as its own story and concept is how to make a new space feel personal,” Manz explains. “But bringing it all together cohesively is always the challenge.”
Her solution? Warmth, intention, and a strong belief in the power of people. In new builds it can take years for a home to shed its newness. For this project, the goal was to fast-track that sense of belonging by layering in pieces with history and heart. Vintage market finds, local artists, and meaningful objects play a starring role throughout the home.
“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”
That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.
THE OPEN CONCEPT, REIMAGINED
The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.
“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”
A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.
ENTRYWAY: A WARM WELCOME
The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.
Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.
POWDER BATH: SMALL ROOM, BOLD SPIRIT
If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.
LOUNGE: A STUDY IN CALM AND DEPTH
Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings.
Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.
At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.

THE CHRISTI PROJECT
AWARD-WINNING HOME BUILDER DESIGNS WHAT MATTERS MOST
“It is our privilege to create these beautiful places—not just houses, but homes,” says Ogden resident Steve Pierce (founder and CEO of Pierce Design + Build). As a leading homebuilder and design firm in Northern Utah, Pierce Build + Design brings award-winning custom homes, remodels, and additions to Weber, Morgan, Cache, Davis, and Summit counties. With over three decades of experience, the team helps clients bring their ideas to life through expert craftsmanship and engagement throughout the homebuilding and design process.
As a leader in the homebuilding industry, Pierce believes in giving back to the community. Just over two years ago, Steve was contacted by the Northern Wasatch Homebuilders Association, where he previously served as president. He was asked to come look at a house that had been selected for remodel for a family and their daughter with special needs.
He met the Griffin family, who love camping, playing games, sports, hiking, and going on adventures. Their amazing 18-yearold daughter, Christi, requires a high level of continuous care after experiencing two brain injuries. One injury occurred before birth and a second at seven years old. With the constant care of her loving family, Christi progressed to speaking, singing, and even riding a bike. She loved music, swimming, memorizing

songs, and school. However, the second brain injury left Christi unable to see, speak, or move. She retained some hearing but is now completely dependent on her family for care.
Through a series of miracles—including a family friend submitting their name at the Northern Wasatch Parade of Homes to win a home remodel—the Griffin family was able to connect with Steve Pierce. They discussed remodeling the existing home to be wheelchair accessible and adding a room for Christi that would allow her to be with the family without being carried up and down steep stairs. However, due to the age of the home, structural components, and several burst pipes, Steve said, “What we need to do is drop the house and build a new one.”
After considering the complexity of the remodel, Steve chose to have his company take on the build as a charitable project. Reflecting on that decision, he shared, “Through a series of experiences and a whisper of inspiration, this project felt right and good.” From that moment on, Steve and his company were all in, and The Christi Project was born.
Steve solicited help from the Northern Wasatch Homebuilders Association and the community to raise funds and donate materials and labor. All funds go directly into the charitable foundation. Deana Griffin, Christi’s mother, says, “Steve has hit so many roadblocks with this project, but he never gives up. He has been steadfast through and through and has a heart of gold. He wanted to do this project for Christi and our family.”
The feeling is mutual. Steve says, “They always call me and ask, ‘How can we help? What can we do?’ They are willing to participate and give whatever they can, despite the tremendous load they have in caring for their family and Christi’s 24/7 care.”
As for Christi, she still loves music and hearing the voices of her family and friends. Simple things bring her joy—like funny noises. “Christi is brave, resilient, and humble. She had to give up everything. She is a fighter and completely relies on other people, which is difficult. She is my hero. You can feel her spirit,” says Deana.
The Christi Project is a labor of love and is still underway as fundraising continues. If you would like to donate, please visit piercedesignbuild.co/the-christi-project or follow the build on Instagram @piercedesignbuild using #TheChristiProject
“AFTER CONSIDERING THE COMPLEXITY OF THE REMODEL, STEVE CHOSE TO HAVE HIS COMPANY TAKE ON THE BUILD AS A CHARITABLE PROJECT.”

PRE MIER CONTRACTING TRANSFORMS HOMES WITH CRAFTSMANSHIP, COLLABORATION AND DECADE-DEEP LOCAL EXPERIENCE.

BUILT
WITH TRUST
Every home carries potential, waiting for the right hands to unlock it. Premier Contracting exists at the intersection where vision meets craftsmanship. What began as a modest handyman effort has grown into a trusted general contracting company serving homeowners across Northern Utah, delivering thoughtful renovations, clear communication, and results that consistently turn lived-in spaces into places clients are proud to call home.
Founded in 2016, Premier Contracting grew quickly from a weekend handyman operation into a full-scale general contracting company. Serving communities from Brigham to North Salt Lake, the team built its reputation on reliability, skill, and genuine care. Now, while celebrating ten years in business, that commitment still drives every project.
Owners Robert and Kasandra “Kasi” Cherry lead the company as a true power couple. Within six months, their side project became a full-time career. By the end of their first year, they were licensed general contractors and fully invested. Their mindset has always been simple: Challenge accepted .
Premier Contracting operates as a one-stop shop. Bathroom and kitchen remodels, basement finishes, full-home renovations, decks, custom ADUs, window replacements, flooring, countertops, and structural upgrades are all handled under one roof. Clients value the streamlined process, consistent communication, and the confidence of working with one trusted team from start to finish.
Robert, a Utah native, manages on-site operations as a general contractor. With a lifelong connection to construction, he focuses on precision, safety, and quality. He notices details others miss and ensures every element is executed correctly. Kasi oversees administration, finances, and strategy, drawing on a strong background in business, finance, and customer care. She also brings architectural and design insight, helping clients visualize finished spaces before construction begins.
Family and compassion shape their work ethic. Time with children, a grandbaby, and rescued animals reflects the same care they extend to clients. What they love most is transformation—taking older homes and making them feel new. Finishing details are their favorite part: the final touches that deliver the unmistakable wow. For Premier Contracting, building isn’t just work—it’s pride, creativity, and trust built into every home.
They also believe in mentoring youth, supporting skilled trades, and strengthening communities through honest work, shared knowledge, and example. Each project becomes a partnership, grounded in respect, clear expectations, and results that stand the test of time. That legacy continues as they confidently push forward into their next decade.

Cornelius Ward’s story begins where the Pacific meets the shore. Born in Kailua, Hawaii, he grew up with food defined by bright citrus, slow-simmered broths, and ingredients so fresh they needed little to shine.
His respect for what the sea and land provide became a career path when Ward attended culinary school at The Art Institute in San Bernardino.
Ward went on to become the Executive Chef at Kona Grill in Denver and then at Catch Steak in Aspen. He provided excellence night after night and honed discipline to coach teams consistently.
After his time as a personal chef in Utah, Ward now serves as executive chef at the Purple Sky Restaurant and Winery. A new destination on the map in Northern Ogden, Purple Sky blends luxury, ambiance, and flavor with thoughtfully sourced local ingredients.
His expertise now colors the menu, blending Hawaii’s instinct for balance, California’s bright, fresh flavors, culinary-school discipline, and leadership shaped in high-end dining in Denver, Aspen, and now Ogden.
The aim isn’t complexity for its own sake, but food that feels clear, thoughtful, and memorable by being seasoned precisely, textured smartly, and executed cleanly.
Ward also created the recently launched Big Kahuna Spice Company, which produces a finishing salt now used on every steak served at Purple Sky.
Purple Sky is a newly written story, and with Ward at the helm, it’s written with purpose— one service, one dish, and one guest at a time. To find out more, visit purpleskywinery.com

A practical spring guide to protecting your home and family
EXPERT ADVICE FROM YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD ELECTRICIAN
ARTICLE BY EVANA MAURIZ
Spring cleaning comes in many forms. It's a season to restart, not just our routines, but also our homes. As the seasons change, a few thoughtful electrical checks can help ensure safety, comfort, and peace of mind for the months ahead. It’s a quieter kind of spring cleaning—one that often goes unnoticed.
For this month's expert guidance, we turn to Lance Bosworth, owner and lead electrician of Lancelot Electric . Known throughout the community as your neighborhood electrician, Lance has built his business on reliability, integrity, and genuine care. He’s the kind of professional you call without hesitation and confidently recommend to your grandmother. His work is rooted in long-term relationships, not quick fixes.
Lance suggests starting with the essentials: test smoke detectors and confirm carbon monoxide detectors are up to date and functioning properly. After a winter of heavy use, it’s also wise to ensure your furnace system is in good condition. If your home
uses roof de-icing cables, remember to turn them off for the season, and if space heaters were part of your winter routine, take a moment to ensure outlets are secure and in good condition to help reduce fire risk.
While some of these checks are easy to manage on your own, Lance recommends calling a professional for wiring and outlet replacements. Electrical systems often show subtle signs before larger issues arise, and a trained eye can help identify concerns that might otherwise be overlooked—especially in older homes.
Lance approaches every project with care and respect. He prides himself on treating each home as if it were his own. He’s known for noticing issues early and for the thoughtful way he brings them to a homeowner’s attention.
As the seasons change, a few small checks can make a meaningful difference, helping homes remain safe, comfortable, and well cared for throughout the year.
