LIFESTYLE LETTER

Time for Summer Exploration When I was in the sixth grade, I discovered the peace of nature. We had just moved, and I noticed a trail across the street. On a hot summer day, I thought, Why not go for a hike? As soon as I stepped onto the trail, I was surrounded by towering trees. The air was still-quiet, except for the occasional bird chirping or bee buzzing by. I stopped, looked around, and felt a deep sense of peace. That moment stayed with me. It was the first time I felt the calm that nature can bring. This month's feature story highlights a local family who finds connection and joy in exploring the outdoors together, right here in the Ogden area. We're also highlighting several community members who share our love for the natural beauty that surrounds us. July is a month of celebration--not only for our nation, but also for the pioneers who bravely settled this land generations ago. As we honor their legacy and our country's freedom, may we also take time to appreciate the world around us: hike a trail, ride a bike, watch a sunset, and feel the peace that nature has to offer. Wishing you a meaningful and refreshing July. K AT R I N A H A M M O N D , P U B L I S H E R @OGDENCITYLIFESTYLE

ROOTED IN CRAFT, Driven by Vision

MAKING A SPLASH, ONE BACKYARD AT A TIME ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY COREY COZZENS & KEVIN LINSLEY

H OM E U P DAT E | ARTS + CU LT U RE

Born and raised in the quiet town of Deaver, Wyoming, Corey Cozzens has always followed his passions with purpose. After attending Northwest College, he moved across the country to study classic French cuisine at a culinary school in Dover, New Hampshire. His culinary journey led him to worldclass kitchens, including Pebble Beach in California and Amangani in Jackson, Wyoming, where he refined his skills in hospitality and high-end cuisine. In 2009, Corey brought his talents to Logan, Utah, helping open the Beehive Grill. It was there he met Kimberly, his future wife, and the two married in 2011. Corey later joined Utah State University's culinary department, managing the Skyroom Restaurant and mentoring students in food service and hospitality. By 2018, Corey and Kimberly were ready for a lifestyle shift. With their three sons, they relocated to Ogden Valley, where Corey transitioned into a career in landscape architecture. Partnering with Kevin Linsley at Valley Build Design, Corey brought his creative eye and attention to detail to outdoor living spaces, applying his design sensibilities in new and inspiring ways. From custom patios to fire pits and stunning backyard pools, Corey found joy in creating environments where families could relax, connect, and cool off together. In 2024, Corey launched Dip Pools, a new venture that combines innovative design with a lifelong commitment to creating spaces that bring people together - this time with a splash. Focused on high-quality, thoughtfully designed pools and outdoor living areas, Dip Pools reflect Corey's beliefs that the best memories are often made outside, near water, and with good company. Kevin Linsley, Corey's business partner and friend, shares the same drive for meaningful work and community connection. A devoted husband, a proud father, and a natural entrepreneur, Kevin is known for his integrity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. With a strong belief in hands-on leadership, Kevin excels at bringing a vision to life. At Valley Design Build and Dip Pools, he combines craftsmanship and purpose, helping to shape environments that reflect the values of beauty, function, and sustainability, including stunning pools that become the centerpiece of backyard living. Nature has always been a source of peace and inspiration for Kevin. Whether hiking, camping, or simply spending time outside with his family, the outdoors grounds him and informs both his work and worldview. He sees parallels between nature and design, each requiring patience, balance, and thoughtful care. Kevin also believes deeply in the power of community. He's a consistent presence in local efforts, whether mentoring others, volunteering, or supporting causes that matter to those around

him. For Kevin, success is not just measured by business accomplishments, but by the relationships he builds and the legacy he leaves behind. Katrina Hammond states, "I had the pleasure of working with Kevin and Corey on my backyard and pool, where they completed a lot of rock work. They came in to fix and address issues, and I was impressed by their thoroughness, precision, and visionary approach to the project. The team they brought with them was respectful, hard-working, and conscientious, making the entire experience smooth and enjoyable. One of the best qualities Kevin and Corey possess is their responsiveness- they were quick to respond to any concerns or questions I had, ensuring everything went according to plan." Together, Corey and Kevin represent a blend of vision, craftsmanship, and heart, dedicated to their families, their work, and the Ogden community they now call home. Whether designing the perfect pool, addressing issues with precision, or reimagining a backyard from scratch, they continue to dive headfirst into projects that bring joy, beauty, and connection to everyday life.

"Life is about building relationships, businesses and a legacy that lasts." -Kevin Linsley

family find, the one- it's an honor I never take for granted." When she's not guiding clients home, Hope finds peace in the outdoors. Whether hiking with Trigger, paddle boarding, or taking scenic drives, nature is her sanctuary. She also loves gardening, concerts, traveling, Pilates (when her body cooperates!), and exploring new foods and recipes. "If it brings joy, peace, or fullness to my soul, I'm in--unless it involves heights or extreme danger," she laughs. At the heart of it all is Hope's unwavering "why": her family and her personal growth. "I live each day to become a better version of myself, to create a life full of love and memories for the people I cherish," she says. "I've been blessed beyond measure, and at the end of this wild and beautiful ride, I want to look back with a full heart and a life well-lived." Give Hope a call for all of your real estate needs-she'd be honored to help guide you home.

Hope was born in the stunning Ogden Valley and has cherished every chapter of her life spent in Liberty, Eden, Pleasant View, and Ogden. With deep roots in the community, she has always found joy in the beauty and connection this area offers. Her greatest joy comes from her family. She's the proud mother of two beautiful daughters--Morgan, 27, and Jordan, 25. Jordan's partner, Noah, is considered family, too. At home, Hope's world is brightened by her loyal pup, Trigger, her grumpy (but loved) 12-year-old cat named Satan, and her new grand-kitten, Stevie. "They're the light of my life," she says with a smile. Hope's journey in real estate began 15 years ago, when she started as an assistant to her excellent broker. Twelve years ago, she earned her Realtor's license, launching a career that quickly became a calling. "Helping people through one of the biggest decisions of their lives is magical," she explains. In an age where constant connection often means distraction, the Irvine family has carved out a different kind of life—one rooted in mountains, motion, and meaningful time together. For them, the mountains are not just a place to visit. It's where life unfolds, bonds are built, and memories are made.

photo Cinthia Irvine

"Getting outdoors allows me to interact with each individual in my family and to see their personality." -Cinthia Irvine Joshua Irvine, the father of the clan, sees their outdoor lifestyle as both a counterbalance and a calling. "In a world where technology continues to expand its reach, it has become more and more important to our family to unplug," he says. "The outdoors is a perfect excuse." Rather than pulling against technology, the Irvines have leaned into what unites them: shared experiences under open skies. They've established a tradition of letting everyone choose the activity, ensuring everyone has a voice. " Whether it is hiking, fishing, snowboarding, horseback riding, or hopping on a motorized vehicle--we love the outdoors as a family," Joshua adds. "Some of our best memories have happened right here in the mountains, lakes, and parks of the Ogden area."

Cinthia, the heart of the household, views nature as a reflection of her children's personalities. "Getting outdoors allows me to interact with each member of my family and see their personalities," she shares. "The outdoors gives me a window into their hearts--even just a little bit." Although nurturing in her perspective, Cinthia thrives on adrenaline. "If there's no adventure, it's boring to me," she laughs. "I love riding on the edge, getting lost, and navigating our way back." One of her favorite memories was a recent hike near Causey Reservoir. "There was something for everyone- water, mountains, fish, flowers, and seclusion. Everyone had a challenge. Everyone had success." Eighteen-year-old Caleb finds the outdoors to be a powerful source of mental clarity and connection. CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / O G D E N

"Disconnecting from everything is one of the reasons I love doing things with my family outdoors," he says. "Nature compels you to turn it off, put it down, and watch the world come alive." Caleb enjoys solo hikes to reflect and meditate, often bringing a hammock to relax in. He especially enjoys the family's annual hike to see the salmon run at Causey Reservoir. "I love fish, so watching their life cycle was extra special--being there with my family made it even better." Seventeen-year-old Luke brings a motor-loving, music-infused passion to the family's outdoor time. "Being outdoors with my family is normal to me. I don't remember a time living in the city," he says. "It's just part of what we do." Luke finds peace and energy while snowboarding on Christmas Eve, a family tradition. "Horsepower speaks to me," he says. "I enjoy an actual horse, but it's not the same as the roar of an engine." A recent solo motorcycle ride towards Monte Cristo led to a surreal moment. "A moose ran alongside me for part of the way. It was like something out of a dream." Thirteen-year-old Levi is learning the value of effort and teamwork through outdoor challenges. "One of the things I like about being outside with my

family is that we communicate better," he says. "My dad makes us leave all screens in the car, which is hard, but it makes us work together." Levi recalls a memorable hike up Ben Lomond. "My dad woke me up at 3 a.m. so that we could start in the dark," he says. "When we reached the top, he took a picture of me holding the American flag. You could see forever." Though the descent was tricky, it was a moment of pride. "I began to find a love for hiking that day." And then there's Walker, age 9-the youngest and most observant of the group. For him, outdoor time means connection with his older brothers. "It's one of the only times I get dedicated time with them," he says. "They can be swamped, but when we schedule family time, it means we're all together."

photo Joshua Irvine

One of Walker's favorite memories is fishing with his brothers and without his parents. "Our cousin was in town, and we wanted to show him cool places near Ogden. We spent hours laughing and playing. I don't remember if we caught any fish, but I loved being with my brothers." For the Irvine family, the outdoors is more than just a backdrop — it's where values are taught, relationships are deepened, and life is fully lived. Whether it's summiting peaks before sunrise, snowboarding on Christmas Eve, riding with a moose, or simply casting a line with a brother, each experience becomes a thread in the fabric of their family identity. In a world that often pulls people apart, the Irvines have discovered that nature has a way of drawing them closer, not just to the wilderness, but to each other. JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . DIY Your Way To a Bug-Free Summer

Adult- and Kid-Friendly Natural Bug Repellents from A Beautiful Mess ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY A BEAUTIFUL MESS

M AT E R I A L S : • 10 drops lemon essential oil • 10 drops lemongrass essential oil • 8 drops lavender essential oil • 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil • 1.5 ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle) • .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

M AT E R I A L S : • 10 drops lemon essential oil • 10 drops lemongrass essential oil • 4 drops lavender essential oil • 1.5 ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle) • .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

(age 15 and over)

I N S T RU C T I O N S : In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

step one Layer in the St ars and Stripes Start with bold, Americana elements- flags, pillows, and throws. A vintage-inspired flag makes a great focal point, especially draped beside the door to draw the eye. Complement it by adding cozy touches with pillows and blankets using stars-and-stripes to add the patriotic charm. Design Tip: Mix textures like cotton, burlap, and knits for depth, while keeping your palette red, white and blue.

2 step t wo Using Rustic Foundations

Ground your decor with rustic, repurposed items like wooden crates, ladders, or galvanized cans. These earthy pieces contrast nicely with bright, bold and patriotic colors to create a welcoming and a homey touch. Design Tip: Use crates or ladders to create vertical layers and avoid clutter.

3 step three Add Greener y for Balance Soften bold colors with fresh or faux greenery--think grasses, ferns or trimmed boxwoods. Display them in woven baskets, or old crates for a relaxed, summery vibe that feels fresh and vibrant. Design Tip: Keep the look clean, with simple, structured greens.
