LIFESTYLE LETTER
Beginning the Year with Intention As we welcome a brand-new year, there’s something refreshing about January’s quiet promise—an invitation to reset. Here we can pause to refocus and step into a season of intentional well-being. At Ogden City Lifestyle, our annual Health & Wellness issue is dedicated to exploring the many ways we can care for ourselves, our community, and our four-legged friends. This month, our stories celebrate wellness from unique perspectives. There is one thing many of us overlook: our eyes. From daily strain to long-term care, our feature on eye health offers insight into protecting the very sense that helps us see the world’s beauty. We also dive into the transformative power of breathwork. In a world that seems to move faster each year, reminding ourselves to breathe becomes a powerful tool for grounding, clarity, and balance. But wellness extends beyond personal habits. It thrives in compassion, connection, and service. This issue highlights two remarkable examples of that truth. One story follows a local doctor who is bringing life-changing surgical care to Ghana. His family's work is rooted in courage, skill, and deep humanity. Another brings us closer to home, showcasing medical professionals right here in Ogden who generously give back to strengthen the well-being of our own community. Don't miss our article titled "Why Ogden, Dad?" And because our emotional wellness is often nurtured by the company we keep, we’re delighted to introduce a very special friend in need of a forever home: Shadow, our sleek black cat with a gentle spirit and curious demeanor. If you’re looking to start the year with a little extra love, the Weber County Animal Shelter may have the perfect addition to your family. As we step into 2026 together, I hope this issue inspires you. Wellness is not one-size-fits-all; it’s a journey made up of small choices, meaningful connections, and the stories we share along the way. Here’s to a year of clarity, strength, joy, and spreading kindness!

HOW ONE LOCAL SURGEON JOINS OTHERS TO BRING HELP, HEALING, AND HOPE TO AFRICA. ARTICLE BY JENNICA HARRIS

I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE
The Jensen family provides critical medical services at their clinic in Ghana, dedicating themselves to global health and community well-being.
Volunteer. Surgeon. Husband. Father. Friend. These are just a few titles to describe Utah native Dayne R. Jensen, M.D., D.M.D. “Dr. Dayne” brings his expertise as a cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon in Northern Utah to the humble villages of Ghana, Africa, as the surgical director for Ghana Make A Difference. Founded in 2012 by Cory and Stacey Hofman, the mission of GMAD is to “protect vulnerable children and to preserve families in Ghana.” Dr. Dayne and his team of volunteer surgeons and specialists provide vital and often complex surgeries as part of GMAD medical missions. Bringing needed medical care to a remote part of the world can be life-changing for all involved. Dr. Dayne and his family take the journey to serve in Africa together. His amazing wife, Brooke Jensen, works as a surgical coordinator and is often the first person a patient sees after surgery. The Jensen children also spend time helping in the village, at the school, and in the community. The lines of people waiting to be evaluated are a testament to the direct needs being addressed within the community. His work is a collaborative effort to alleviate human suffering. “Medical missions keep me going back. You realize you have to do more, because there is so much more to do.” Dr. Dayne reflects on the strength of local medical care providers in Ghana. “It is amazing to see what they have done with limited resources. They make every stitch count.” The heart of the mission is reflected in the love and kindness of people like Dr. Dayne and family along with the many donors, volunteers, and participants who come together to bring healing and hope to those in need. As Dr. Dayne says of medical missions in Ghana, “You think you are going there to help people, but the person who will be the most changed and healed will be you.”

How Intentional Breathing Can Heal Body and Mind
A: Breathwork is a powerful technique that uses intentional breathing patterns to shift spaces in your body, promoting health and well-being. It’s a versatile tool—much like exercise—that becomes more effective when integrated into your daily lifestyle.
Q: How does controlling my breath help my body?
A: Our bodies are built to heal. Unfortunately, humans often start breathing incorrectly between the ages of three and five. If you watch a baby, their stomach expands on the inhale; many adults do the opposite. Shallow breathing limits the oxygen your body needs. Intentional breathwork shifts your body out of the fight-or-flight state by activating your parasympathetic response. This allows regulation of the nervous system and can even help rewire neural pathways. It teaches us how to respond instead of react to triggers and situations in our day-to-day lives. Breathwork can help with reducing stress and anxiety, Kelsey Campbell shares a simple 4 step breathing technique to reset you nervous system

Breathe Better, Live Better
Q: What is breathwork?
improving mental focus, and enhancing emotional well-being.
Q: Can breathwork really help with trauma?
A: Yes. We are the only creatures that replay stressful events in our heads, allowing the emotion to constantly affect our bodies. Emotional buildup can lead to disease and eventually manifest as physical disease. We don’t always realize the trauma and emotions we often hold onto.
Q: Where should I start?
A: A great technique for beginners is the Box Breath. It involves four equal parts: inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold for four. Doing this for just five minutes can immediately shift any tension or anxiety you might be experiencing. You can also add an intention! One visualization I like to use is inhaling love and gratitude and exhaling what does not serve me. This simple practice can be done at any time and has amazing health benefits for your body and mind.

Ogden Clinic's Community Commitment Decades of leadership and a physician-focused approach drive growth and expand local primary care access. DRIVEN BY COMMUNITY: HOW OGDEN CLINIC GREW WITH A PATIENT-FIRST MINDSET
For Kevin Porter, CEO of Ogden Clinic, a planned short stay turned into a decades-long commitment. Joining the clinic in 2003 as a Practice Administrator, Porter stepped into the top role in 2017. He attributes his longevity to the physicians, describing them as "so kind and really having the best interest of the patients at heart." This commitment to patients, employees, and providers is the foundational principle behind the clinic's remarkable growth—from a single building to nearly 30, serving the corridor from Logan to Bountiful. The clinic's current success is rooted in a single pivotal decision made in the 1990s: switching back to a physician-owned facility. This structure is enshrined in their mission statement, which was updated in 2000: "To be the place of choice for patients, employees, and providers by remaining a thriving, independent, physician-owned multi-specialty group practice."
STRATEGIC EXPANSION: BRINGING CARE CLOSER TO HOME
Under Porter's leadership and influence, a critical assessment of community needs led to a transformative strategy: placing primary care locations where patients live. Porter

emphasized that the Board of Directors, which is composed entirely of physicians, recognized the importance of branching out and becoming a genuine part of the community. "It was essential to the Board of Directors, physicians within Ogden Clinic, and me that the Clinic deemed it necessary to answer a need of the community—to become part of the community and their culture." This focus on accessibility is what Porter believes truly differentiates Ogden Clinic from others. While they support traditional community initiatives—donating to local schools and races—the sheer number of primary care locations helps eliminate significant travel barriers for patients seeking essential care. This need entirely dictates the organization's commitment to growth; they continually monitor and assess communities to ensure their expansion provides a genuine service.
CEO Kevin Porter
Ogden Clinic Today
CULTIVATING CAREERS: VALUING EVERY EMPLOYEE'S JOURNEY
Patient care at Ogden Clinic is paramount. Kevin believes exceptional patient care starts with supporting employees. Porter adopts a philosophy of meeting employees where they are, recognizing that not everyone is seeking a permanent career home. "We are part of their journey, whether it is for many years or for a brief time," he says. Whether an individual is seeking a lifelong career or a stepping stone to a new opportunity, the clinic is focused on helping them grow and reach their potential. This commitment to fostering personal and professional development ensures the workforce remains engaged, knowledgeable, and dedicated to the mission. The goal, ultimately, is to provide a service that patients trust throughout the Ogden Clinic system— their provider, their employees, and the organization itself.
Ogden Clinic in
INTEGRITY AND INNOVATION FROM THE TOP DOWN
The final piece of the mission focuses on the providers, who are expected to embody the clinic's core values: Excellence, Compassion, Integrity, Leadership, Innovation, Dedication, Communication, and Unity. This spirit of service extends beyond the exam room. Porter highlights physicians like Dr. Mike Hall, who created the popular "Ortho Cup." This event quickly became a much-anticipated gathering, held every spring (this year in St. George), with all proceeds dedicated to local scholarships and medical costs. It is a testament to the fact that the physicians' desire to give back and their core values are integral to Ogden Clinic's identity. Kevin Porter's enduring tenure and the clinic's continuous evolution underscore a simple yet powerful formula for success in healthcare: prioritize the patient, empower the employee, and be led by compassionate, community-focused physicians. This model ensures that as Ogden Clinic continues to grow, it does so with trust and accessibility at its core.

I'm Indiana, and I'm 14, almost 15. After fifteen years of living out of state, I was pretty surprised when my dad, Dr. Luke Edelmayer, an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor at Ogden Clinic specializing in cochlear implants for deaf people, moved us back home. We were living in the mountains of Arizona, and he took a position at the Ogden Clinic. Being homeschooled meant it was easy for us kids to pick up and leave, but moving states is never fun. We’ve lived in some unique places—Florida, Georgia, and Virginia—so I was super curious about his devotion to this one city.
Dad didn't have life handed to him. When he and my mom, Mandy, met, he was living in his car and working at Tony's Pizza. Mom saw right through the tattoos and the smell of smoke to find one of the kindest hearts in the world. She decided he was a genius and nudged him to consider a career in medicine. He laughed and told her, "You have to be rich to become a doctor." She just laughed in return and said, "Not in America." So, he enrolled in anatomy at Weber State and completely fell in love with it. My life has been a series of moves across the country. Everywhere my dad trained, he received amazing job offers, and each time, I hoped he'd take them. But his heart was always set on Ogden. He and Mom grew up here; they went to Bonneville High and got married in the Union Station. I get that it’s home to them, but I had to ask Dad, "Do you truly think Ogden is better than a house near the ocean?" That’s when he explained the real reason. He said, "I can't tell you the joy it brings me to restore the hearing of one of my elementary teachers, to stop the dizziness of my friends’ parents, or to fix the noses of their children. These are the people who saw through my worn clothes, the people who loved me for who I was and not what I wore." My dad is truly a man of many talents; he, along with his four children and my mom, Mandy, plays several instruments. We all love music, which is part of why he chose ENT. When I asked him why he specialized in cochlear implants, he just smiled
and said, "Because I love music. I can't imagine life without others being able to hear music, so I wanted to help." Helping others is just part of who he is. He also volunteers for veterans with hearing loss because he believes in serving those who served us. I once read a letter from one of his cochlear implant patients who is indigenous to the Navajo Nation. It said, "I write this with tears falling. Last night, for the first time in my life, I fell asleep to the sound of rain pattering against my roof. I could hear my dog scratching against my door and the howl of a coyote. Other people may take those simple sounds for granted, but I will cherish them forever." Some people think cochlear implants are only for people born without hearing, but the majority of patients he sees are grandparents who want to listen to their grandkids' laughter. So why Ogden, Dad? I finally see it. It's because whether he’s living in an old car, a friend's basement, or a beautiful house, home is not about where you live, but who you live with.
Dr. Luke Edelmayer

Preventative Care: Your Pet’s Best Winter Defense
The high mountain towns of Utah hold a pristine, almost magical allure in the winter. Yet, this stunning beauty comes with the harsh reality of isolation. Snow closes off roads as temperatures plummet. Securing the well-being of our people and, just as importantly, our cherished animal companions, hinges on having reliable local support. This is why the presence of a devoted veterinarian in town is absolutely vital. Fortunately, Ogden Valley is home to Dr. Beau Bradbeer, a dedicated veterinarian with extensive experience in emergency care. Dr. Bradbeer’s journey into veterinary medicine began naturally, inspired by a childhood spent in rescue and rehabilitation. “My mum was a wildlife carer,” she explains. “So, it was kind of the natural progression of life that I would end up being a vet.” This lifetime of experience now serves her community, focusing on immediate and preventative care. Dr. Bradbeer offers practical advice on keeping your dogs, horses, and chickens safe this winter.
CANINE COMPANIONS:
De-icing salts: One of the most common, yet often overlooked, risks is the salt used on driveways. Sodium Chloride— normal de-icing salt—can irritate paws, and if ingested in large quantities, it may be toxic. Hypernatremia is a condition that can be “tricky to treat.” The best advice: “It’s best to avoid it rather than have to treat it.”
Dr. Bradbeer advises using pet-friendly salt, though being mindful that even these are not 100% safe, and brushing off feet after exposure is still important. Antifreeze Toxicity: The Fatal Mistake: Dr. Bradbeer highlights one of the most serious cold-weather dangers for all animals, but most commonly our dogs and cats: antifreeze. "That one's the big one." Ethylene glycol, the toxic substance in many commercial antifreezes, is extremely dangerous. It only takes a small ingested dose to be fatal, and the commonly sweet taste makes it tempting for our pets. "Once ingested, it rapidly causes crystals to form in the kidneys, which leads to irreversible renal failure." She also reveals a sobering fact about the treatment: "Alcohol! One of the treatments is intravenous, diluted 190 proof Vodka. For treatment to have any chance of success, though, it needs to be started immediately after exposure." Prevention is key. All dog and cat owners need to be informed about this danger. Always ensure antifreeze spills are thoroughly and immediately cleaned up and that your pets cannot access stored containers, even empty ones. Frostbite & Exposure: “Low temperatures can be a killer. It is vital that outside dogs have somewhere to go that is warm and dry and protects them from the elements.” For those enjoying outdoor activities, consider bringing your dog with you during the warmest part of the day or avoid extreme wet or cold adventures altogether. HOOVED HEROES:
Horses have natural defenses against the cold, but owners must be vigilant about a few key areas: Feed & Warmth: "The big thing with horses is going to be nutrition; “Good quality roughage and grain, with consideration of your horse's age and dental condition, is essential to help keep them warm on those cold, snowy days," says Dr. Bradbeer. "Take care not to overfeed or leave feed shed doors open by mistake, as sneaky horses will gorge themselves and are at risk of developing gut ulcers and even colic with overingestion of grain. Blanketing & Shelter: Blanketing is a subjective decision. Only blanket a horse that is accustomed to being blanketed or has been brought from a warmer climate. However, for a fully coated horse, over-blanketing can cause overheating and sweating. This actually making them colder is "counter-intuitive." Blankets should generally be used only when it is extremely cold, wet, or windy. Crucially, all horses need adequate shelter. Hoof Care: Winter often means going shoeless. "It's best to avoid normal shoes when there's snow on the ground. Snow compacts up underneath the foot, and it's not only slippery but can also cause strain on joints and muscles." If you do need to shoe, one option is snow pads that your farrier can place between the hoof and the shoe to stop the accumulation. Don't forget to add borium to your shoes to help with traction.
THE FLOCK:
Water & Ventilation: Preventing frozen water is essential, but proper ventilation in the coop is paramount. “You can insulate the coop,” but too much insulation without airflow creates a humid environment. "The humidity is a killer because wet feathers equal frozen chickens." Heating: The use of heating in coops can be controversial. Heat mats are one option, but as with all electrical devices, there is a risk of fire. If using a heat source, make sure it is not near nesting material, check all cords regularly, and do your research on the products that you use. By following these preventative care tips, we can ensure our beloved animal companions remain safe, healthy, and happy throughout the winter season.

Local trail runner Tara Warren is a fixture in the Ogden trail community, taking on local peaks on a daily basis and competing in ultramarathons around the world. She’s chosen to help support air quality initiatives by organizing a local version of the Running Up For Air (RUFA) race series on Malan’s Peak each February. On race weekend, hikers and runners sign up for time slots from 3 to 24 hours and clock 6-mile round trips up and down Malans. The energy is contagious, whether you’re hiking one lap or pushing for more. Check out the Feb. 27-28, 2026 event at runsignup.com/Race/Events/UT/Ogden/ RunningUpforAirMalansPeak

For cross-country skiing, fat biking, or groomed snowshoeing trails, North Fork Park in Liberty has some of the best options you’ll find anywhere. Check out ogdennordic.com for more details. Sara Toliver, CEO of Visit Ogden, summed up Ogden’s winter trail opportunities: “Ogden’s world-class skiing might steal the spotlight, but our winter trails are pure magic too. From the sparkling frozen waterfall in Waterfall Canyon to the peaceful paths of Wheeler Creek and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, there’s beauty and adventure around every corner. Be sure to dress for the conditions, wear appropriate footwear, share your plans, and recreate responsibly!”

It’s no secret that Ogden has prime access to world-class trails. What some Weber County locals don’t realize, however, is that the trails keep humming with activity all winter long. In between epic powder days, many outdoor aficionados keep their trail gear handy. As much as I love fall mornings, it can also be fun to trot through a couple of inches of fresh powder on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. It’s easy to squeeze in a few miles before I hit the office or get the gang together for a Saturday hike. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail runs along the lower elevations of the Wasatch Front. With frequent trailheads for easy access, it’s not hard to pick a spot and begin exploring. In the dead of winter, the section north of 12th Street often melts off first after a storm. Other sections can alternate between dirt, snow, and ice, so plan your route and gear accordingly. My personal favorite is the 29th Street trailhead, which has multiple 3–4-mile loops that provide great views and a bit of climbing. One of the most popular jaunts is climbing Malan’s Peak. Even in mid-winter, this 2,000-foot climb is usually tracked out and in prime condition. Just be sure to check the Utah Avalanche Center website before heading up to higher elevations anywhere along the Wasatch Front.

Winter Eye WELLNESS ARTICLE BY KASSANDRA CHERRY
D r. An dy Rock wood
6 SIMPLE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR VISION:
30
When the temperature drops and the air turns dry, we often think about moisturizing our skin and protecting our hands. But what about our eyes? Winter conditions—from harsh, cold winds to low humidity and bright, reflective snow—pose unique challenges to eye health. Taking proactive steps can ensure your vision stays clear, comfortable, and protected all season long. Dr. Andy Rockwood from Rockwood Optometry in North Ogden and his team emphasize the importance of consistent care and proactive measures. Many people experience a noticeable increase in dryness, itching, and general irritation in the winter, often due to forced-air heating systems, which severely lower indoor air moisture. "I'd say protection from the strong UV on sunny winter days is really important. It's also common to get dry eye from plugged meibomian glands," Dr. Rockwood explains.

Protecting your eyes from the harsh winter environment is achievable through these six essential strategies: 1. Wear UV-Protective Sunglasses: Snow reflects up to 80% of the sun's UV rays, increasing your risk of temporary 'sunburn' of the cornea and long-term damage. Always wear sunglasses rated for 100% UV protection, even on cloudy days. 2. Stay Hydrated & Use Humidifiers: Counteract indoor dryness by drinking plenty of water and using a cool-mist humidifier in your home. This adds soothing moisture back into the air. 3. Use Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops help replenish and stabilize your natural tear film, washing away irritants and keeping the eye surface moist. 4. Protect Against the Wind: For all outdoor activities, wear protective eyewear like goggles or wraparound sunglasses. This creates a physical barrier against frigid winds and debris. 5. Eat Eye-Healthy Foods: Incorporate foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin A. This includes fatty fish (salmon), flaxseed, eggs, and leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale. These nutrients support tear production and protect the retina. 6. Practice Conscious Blinking: When focused on screens (computers, phones), we blink less often, leading to dryness. Make an effort to blink fully and frequently to naturally refresh and lubricate your eyes. Dr. Rockwood reminds us that if persistent dryness, excessive watering, redness, or pain continues despite these helpful at-home measures, it's crucial to seek a professional eye exam. A small amount of diligent prevention and care can make a huge difference in keeping your eyes healthy until spring.

REST ASSURED: A NEW SLEEP MOVEMENT
Exploring how sleeping separately can strengthen both rest and relationships. 32
hris r. C
There’s a lot of pressure around the meaning of the shared bed, but this is largely a socially constructed belief system. Countless couples have asked, “Is it bad if we sleep in separate rooms?” The answer is not a definitive “yes” or “no.” Snoring, tossing/turning, and conflicting sleep schedules can lead to chronic sleep deprivation. This affects everything from mood to long-term health. Enter sleep divorce, a growing trend where couples sleep separately to improve their rest.
WHEN SHOULD SLEEP DIVORCE BE CONSIDERED?
We all know sleep is important. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need about 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. People who are chronically sleep deprived have an increased risk of health concerns. Lack of sleep also wreaks havoc on relationships. A 2022 study found that sleep-deprived couples had higher levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, and were more likely to engage in conflict. According to Dr. Chris Hammond, Neurologist at Ogden Clinic, “Many couples don’t realize how much poor sleep contributes to irritability, miscommunication, and resentment.” If your partner’s sleep habits are keeping you up at night, you’re not just losing rest—you may also be losing patience and connection. WHAT IS SLEEP DIVORCE?
Many couples have turned to sleep divorce as a practical solution. In fact, an estimated one in six couples have chosen this method. According to Sleeping Separately: The Surprising Science of the Separate Bed by Neil Stanley, PhD. Some even swear by it, including celebrities like Bette Midler and Carson Daly, who have openly discussed their separate sleeping arrangements.
ENGINEERED FOR
ADVENTURE
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SLEEPING SEPARATELY?
• Better sleep quality: No more snoring, kicking, or waking up to an alarm that isn’t yours. • Improved mood and energy: Wellrested individuals are happier, more patient, and better equipped to handle daily stress. • Health benefits: Adequate sleep reduces the risk of heart disease, obesity, stress, and diabetes. • Less resentment: Annoyances over stolen blankets or midnight disturbances are eliminated. Dr. Hammond explains, “For some couples, sleep divorce can be the difference between thriving together and constant tension. Quality sleep is a non-negotiable part of health, and if separate sleeping arrangements provide that, it’s worth considering. Sleeping apart doesn’t mean a relationship is failing. It just means both partners are prioritizing their health and well-being.”
THE KEY TAKEAWAY?
Sleeping apart doesn’t mean you’re growing apart. In fact, it might just be the key to unlocking a healthier, happier relationship.
