s a member of the baby boom generation, I have many memories of a wardrobe that was lovingly fashioned at home by my great-grandmother, a professional seamstress, and both of my grandmothers who were accomplished amateurs. They sewed for my sisters and me, replicating exact dresses for the three of us for special occasions, and for the beginning of each new school year. They also sewed for our baby dolls and our Barbie® dolls. At the time, I thought we were the best dressed crew around and that our Barbie’s® glamorous wardrobe was one to be envied.

It wasn’t until I neared my teen years that I became aware of the world of fashion beyond the walls of my grandmothers’ sewing rooms. I’ll never forget a trip through the local Sears store where I spied a beautiful pair of royal blue, bell-bottom pants that I thought I wanted more than anything. I lusted after those pants and the matching shirt for weeks imagining myself in the stylish store-bought outfit and the splash that it would make when I wore it to school. I’m sure I deemed myself among the fashion divas when my mother presented the coveted outfit to me for my birthday. Sadly, from that day forward, I turned up my nose and never again wore anything my grandmothers made for me. Life has brought me a long way since those days. Looking back, I’m grateful that I’ve come to understand fashion and style from more than one perspective. Although I’ve cultivated an appreciation for the finer things in life, the simplicity of those early years taught me how to create my own look wherever I could afford to shop…that a keen eye can spot quality and potential on the rack of any store, and that it is possible to create a beautiful outfit that will look like a million bucks to even the most discerning eye. The most fun I have today is assembling outfits that pair my bargain-store finds with my expensive investment pieces to create an authentic reflection of who I am inside. That’s why I love the diversity of the shopping experience here in the OneFourteen community. We have a great mix of options that gives us the perfect paintbrush for our fashion expressions right here at home.

Messina Hof Winery Opens Grapevine Location

The most awarded winery in Texas announced it will open a new urban winery in the old Wallis Hotel on November 1. The Grapevine location will feature tours and tastings, a full production facility, a retail shop and private event space.

SOUTHLAKE COMMUNITY REC CENTER After 18 years of planning, the development of the Community Recreation Center for Southlake is underway with Phase 1 of the construction already 100 percent funded. Slated to be located on the southwest corner of Shady Oaks Drive near Bicentennial Park, the facility will include an events hall, a senior center, an events space, an outdoor amphitheater, multipurpose conference and meeting spaces, a club lounge and a catering kitchen. Scheduled to complete in two phases, construction on the first phase is expected to begin in late summer or early fall. Phase 2 is projected to include

plans for fitness, performance training, a gym, an indoor walk/jog track, indoor aquatics, party rooms, early learning classrooms and more. However, funding for Phase 2 will require voter approval. If approved, Phase 2 will begin construction in the fall of 2016.

DRAGON ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY PLANNED The Southlake City Council has approved the creation of a new observatory for the Carroll Independent School District. The move opens up plans for science courses in astronomy to be added at Carroll High School this fall along with opening up star-gazing nights for the public and the formation of campus astronomy clubs. The observatory is made possible through a $98,000 grant from the Hudson Foundation and will be located at the back of Johnson Elementary at 1301 N. Carroll Avenue after consulting with astronomy experts from the University of North Texas for the best location. The district plans to have the Dragon Astronomy Observatory online for the start of the new school year.

ure, it’s a franchise, but Taziki’s in Southlake doesn’t feel like one. And while it’s similar in service as other fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle and Zoës Kitchen, operating partner J. W. Mulkin insists that his customers stick around and enjoy their meals. Not difficult to do, considering they also serve beer and wine. Taziki’s mantra of “creating the deliciously unexpected” is evident throughout their menu of wholesome Greek grub. Simple dishes with striking flavors make it easy to love this place. Like the creamy hummus with lemon and cumin, and the cooling Taziki dip with cucumber and dill – both are included with the Mezedes platter, served with crunchy, seasoned pita chips. Also on the platter are dolmades, grape leaves stuffed with seasoned rice and herbs. They’re an acquired taste, but Taziki’s recipe is a friendlier version of a usually strong-flavored dish. The dolmades are also one of more than a dozen vegetarian options, along with a large selection of gluten-free dishes. 12

Continuing with rich and creamy, the spicy pimento cheese appetizer of sharp cheddar, mayo, red peppers and tabasco is a lot like a zesty macaroni and cheese, served with soft or baked pita chips. Those are all deliciously rewarding starters, but when I think of Greek cuisine, I usually think of near-perfect salads. Taziki’s Mediterranean salad is a perfect example: crisp and tangy, it’s a sizable serving of garbanzo beans, red peppers, red onions, tomatoes, pecans and feta topped with a homemade balsamic vinaigrette. Salads can be ordered with your choice of grilled chicken, turkey, beef tenderloin or grilled lamb. We opted for the turkey, which turned out to be the talk of the table. Seasoned and sliced in-house, it’s juicy and flavorful, the tasty epitome of “deliciously unexpected.” It doesn’t take long to notice that almost everything at Taziki’s has a lemon-like liveliness to it, even the rice. A trait common in Greek dishes and executed extremely well by the restaurant.

We also gobbled up the grilled beef tenderloin gyro of Taziki sauce and caramelized onions, which had an excellent meat-to-pita ratio; a tomato cucumber salad best described as punchy and bright; seasoned, chargrilled lamb; and lastly, grilled shrimp with lemon juice, another dish that had us nodding our heads with savory confirmation. Like Mulkin suggested, we stretched our stay at the restaurant, enjoying our time while on the patio. The people around us did the same, and the aura of haste that surrounds similar places was noticeably absent (at least during dinner). Currently, the Southlake spot is the only location in DFW, with plans to open another in Plano in 2015. The next location happens to be about a mile from my office. Only a mile away? Now that’s what I call deliciously unexpected.

FASHION FORWARD Dresses Get New Closets to Hang In, All to Benefit Charity Article Kaleigh Cobb

senior at Carroll Senior High School, Sydney Colon is extremely involved in the world in which she lives. Her passion for serving the community began with volunteering with Southlake’s teen court program and greeting at Fellowship Church. Inspired by these experiences, Colon says she knew she had to do something with her life to make a difference. “I fell in love with helping others,” she says. Inspired by the A21 Campaign, Sydney and her friend Jessica Tunink started a nonprofit organization called Girls Helping Girls. The A21 Campaign focuses on combatting slavery around the world through educational awareness and prevention, the protection of victims by providing services such as medical and psychological treatment, as well as legal and vocational assistance for victims of human trafficking in their crisis centers, shelters and transitional homes. Through a community-wide donation process, Girls Helping Girls collects high-fashion and designer dresses and re-sells them to raise money to benefit the A21 Campaign. The dresses range from couture to off-the-rack and labels such as Calvin Klein, Versace and Tory Burch are often in the donations. Once the dresses are donated, they are sold during a spring event that Sydney and Jessica run. For a $20 entry fee, anyone can ‘shop’ the dresses and select one to take. All proceeds from the event are donated to the A21 Campaign. This was the first year the event was held and more than 220 dresses were donated. And the inaugural shopping soirée was as successful. “It was packed,” says Sydney, with enthusiasm. “Everyone could see that not sharing these dresses and re-using them was wasteful. If we can use them for a better cause, why not?” The duo realizes that what they’re doing is a part of an enormously larger effort to help fight the trafficking of young girls and women. “This problem is relevant to us all,” Sydney explains. “There is a real need to help these women who have no control whatsoever in their lives. We are trying to help other girls get out of horrendous situations.” And that is why they chose to start the type of organization they did. “We wanted it to be something really feminine and girly… because after all, we are really just girls helping other girls.” 14

Carroll Senior High School’s Sydney Colon

In addition to helping starting Girls Helping Girls, Sydney has completed more than 100 hours of community service throughout her high school career and is a member of PALS, a group of teenagers at Carroll Senior High School who travel to other schools in the district and act as role models to younger students. She challenges herself academically and is a part of Carroll Medical Academy, National Honor Society and competes in UIL competitions. Pursuing her creative side as well, Sydney has been on the yearbook staff and now serves as editor-in-chief. As she looks forward to life beyond high school, Sydney says she hopes to always live life to the fullest and enjoy the time she has with those around her. She hopes to attend The University of Texas at Austin and plans to pursue a master’s degree and work at a major corporation in public relations or marketing. She looks to her father’s favorite saying for her life’s motto: It’s nice to be nice “He always says it to me and never lets a day go by without reminding me,” Sydney says with a smile. You have to believe with her dad’s good advice floating around her mind along with her kind spirit, Sydney is destined for some great adventures along life’s journey. or a hotel with such a big name — The Embassy Suites Dallas-DFW Airport North Outdoor World — it’s fitting that the staff has equally big hearts when it comes to helping out the community that surrounds the hotel. In fact, the collective staff has a charity of record they work with throughout the year, GRACE … and that’s in addition to the many charitable events that are held on the property. “People don’t naturally associate a hotel with fundraising,” says Jacki Dudding, director of sales at the hotel. “But it’s just how we operate here. We take any opportunity we can to partner with schools or nonprofits in the community.” One of the organizations the hotel works with is The Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation, a nonprofit created to support the educational programs of the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District. The Foundation provides funds beyond the normal operating budget for educational programs and activities for students and staff. Foundation funds are used to facilitate student achievement and skill development, recognize and encourage staff excellence and expand communi-

ty involvement from individuals, businesses and civic organizations. The group’s 2014 Academic Recognition Banquet was held at the Embassy Suites and honored the GCISD Graduate Laureates, the teachers who influenced them, the GCISD Teachers of the Year, and the year’s Distinguished Friend, Mike Davis.

Each year, the Women’s Division of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce hosts The Great Taste of Grapevine at the hotel. This fundraising community event offers attendees entertainment while sampling food from area restaurants. Proceeds benefit the Women’s Division of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Spirit and School Supplies programs. Some

of the participating restaurants include Dino’s Steak and Claw House, Ferrari’s Italian Villa & Chop House, Mi Dia From Scratch, Napoli’s Italian Café, Silver Fox Steakhouse, Vineyard Steak House, Weinberger’s Delicatessen, and Winewood. And each holiday season, members of the hotel staff are part of the 450 volunteers helping nearly 1,000 local families in need through the Christmas Cottage program. Part of the Grapevine Relief And Community Exchange (GRACE) organization, the Christmas Cottage provides families with Christmas gifts for their family at no cost to them. What makes the program unique is the families make their own selections of gifts for their family. Each family is given a budget based on their family size. They “shop” in the cottage among age appropriate items that are given a dollar value that is approximate to Walmart. This way, they not only get to choose the gifts that they know their children will like, but they are learning to budget and understand the value of what they are being given. It helps the parents maintain a sense of dignity since they are able to maintain a level of privacy.

Few women have captured the hearts of millions of people across multiple continents like Princess Di did in her short lifetime. A commoner married to Charles, Prince of Wales, in the fairytale wedding of the century, she was loved for her kindness, charity work, quiet beauty and impeccable style. Indeed, she proved that the dream of one day becoming a princess could be a reality to starry-eyed little girls everywhere. Today, 17 years after her death, she still stands as a icon of the 20th century, and we remain fascinated by her life, her legacy and the mystery surrounding the premature end to her life. Imagine having a few hours of undivided attention with someone who knew her well. On Saturday, September 14th, the Tarrant County chapter of the American Cancer Society, with the support of Morrison Supply Company, will provide a unique opportunity to experience an event that opens the doors on our curiosity during an afternoon high tea featuring guest speaker, Patrick Jephson, former private secretary to HRH The Princess of Wales and author of New York Times bestseller, Shadows Of A Princess, and Portraits Of A Princess - Travels With Diana. Born and raised in Ireland, Jephson holds a master’s degree in political science from Cambridge University. Commissioned in the Royal Navy, he served at sea and ashore before being selected for duty in the Royal Household where he served as equerry and as the first and only private secretary (chief of staff ) to Princess Diana. He was also appointed a lieutenant into the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) for personal service to the queen. Following Diana’s death, he became a full-time author, and he has since written widely for newspapers and magazines as well as contributed to numerous television shows in the United States and in Europe. During his years of service to Princess Diana, Jephson was involved in her daily duties which included contact with officials at all levels of government, organizing her public duties, managing her household, and traveling with her to destinations that spanned five continents. He had a window into her most private moments that few others had. The public is invited to join Jephson as he shares stories of life with Diana and a peek behind royal doors at this exclusive event. Guests will savor a selection of gourmet finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, sweets, and teas, and several raffle drawings will be held for a variety of unique items brought in from England especially for this event.
