How To Create Advertising That ‘Sells’ — Without Selling

Mark Kendrick, M.D. P: 386.304.9556 F: 386.304.9282 790 Dunlawton Ave., Suite D, Port Orange, FL 32127

Nothing hurts a business more than advertising that doesn’t work. Monstrous sums are wasted, and opportunities lost on bad advertising. Most businesses are not even sure of the difference between “good” advertising and “bad.” If you're guilty of this — it’s not your fault. You were taught that way. But, the harsh reality is… … Unless and until you have an affordable, dependable marketing SYSTEM to attract a steady flow of qualified leads to your business — you’ll never be as successful as you’d like. ‘Direct response’ marketing will solve your advertising problem. As the name implies, it directly reaches out to, connects with, and brings desired clients to you. Instead of ‘selling’ to prospects, you attract them. Done right, direct response marketing is as proven as the law of gravity.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CON TI N U ED)

PROGRESSIVE POLICE LEADER, VOLUSIA COUNTY SHERIFF MIKE CHITWOOD, RECENTLY CELEBRATED HIS FIRST YEAR IN OFFICE AND CONSIDERS THIS TO BE THE FASTEST YEAR OF HIS LIFE. While “long-term leadership brings stability, it does tend to stifle creativity,” and Chitwood will continue to lead the change in 2018 to ensure the organization remains strong and our communities are safer. He will accomplish these goals by focusing on four key areas: 1. Executing against a crime-fighting strategy: “Every day is crime. How do we make this community safer?” Chitwood asks. His team meets every day to evaluate resources on recent arrests, looking at the crime, evidence and why it occurred. He has also rolled out a real-time crime center to help keep officers and deputies safe, allowing them to make better decisions and to protect the community. To Chitwood, the sanctity of human life comes first: “preserve life before we take life.” 2. Being accessible to the community: Chitwood is not one to spend all of his time behind a desk—he wants to be out, listening to the needs and wants of those that he protects. “Being responsible for a county that is the geographic size of Rhode Island and with 550,000 residents, it’s important to hear the concerns of those living in our community—both good and bad—and to collect ideas that they may have,” he says. “Listening to the community is imperative. What’s causing them to feel unsafe?” 3. Improving quality of life for deputies: Promoting a work environment where a sheriff cares about the personal and 12

professional life of his deputies encourages long-term service. That includes ensuring the right benefits, promotions and educational opportunities are made available.

386.256.3039

www.dougoutsportsgrill.com

Each deputy has a career path, and part of Chitwood’s job is to get them there and see them obtain their goals. 4. Advocating for those that can’t be an advocate for themselves: Being a positive influence on changes in the law is something that Chitwood is passionate about. He’s currently educating himself on laws around texting and driving, legal marijuana guidelines, DUIs and vehicular crashes. Chitwood acknowledges that the biggest challenge today is the opioid crisis. He has never seen such a grip put on a community or nation in his 30 years of service. “An overwhelming majority of those that

it and rendered useless.” As Chitwood enters 2018, he will continue his focus on servant leadership. He will do the best he can to make the community

safer and make the organization stronger and better at doing their jobs. “This is not my profession; it’s my calling,” he says. “I’m where I want to be, doing what I want to do. I just want to make each day a little better than I found it.” Stay connected and engaged by visiting VolusiaSheriff.org, Facebook.com/VolusiaSheriff

HOT SPOT (CON TI N U ED) SOUTH DAYTONA WELCOMED THE DOUG OUT SPORTS BAR AND GRILL IN OCTOBER 2017, AND DOUG VOEPEL COULDN’T BE MORE PLEASED WITH HIS FIRST VENTURE AS AN OWNER. Having previously managed restaurants and worked for Sysco for 18 years, Doug knows the importance of customer service. Doug Out is more than just a sports bar, although it does house 17 televisions, including a large projector TV. It’s a full-service restaurant with three bars, seating more than 200 with plenty of outdoor space. The menu is robust yet cost-conscious with the most expensive item listed at $14. It ranges from appetizers, soups, salads and wings to burgers, sandwiches, seafood and steak. Earning many compliments from customers are the meatloaf and meatloaf sandwich (using Doug’s grandmother’s recipe), boom boom shrimp (fried shrimp tossed in a sweet Thai chili sauce) and the Danish-style baby back ribs (imported from Finland). The majority of ingredients used at the Doug Out are fresh; everything is handmade and handcrafted along with the homemade soups served daily. “My focus is great food and great customer service,” Doug says. “When I am there, I do my best to talk to everyone who walks through my door. I thoroughly believe in customer service and my staff and customers can see that in action.” He is a hands-on owner, and when he isn’t out front talking with customers, Doug is supporting the servers, bartenders and cooks as needed. What can you expect from the Doug Out Sports Bar and Grill in the coming months? Thirsty Thursday karaoke, daily menu specials and a Saturday morning farmers market. You can also see them out in the community as sponsors of local little league hockey and baseball teams along with the minor league baseball team, the Daytona Tortugas. And don’t forget to stop by during Race Week in February and Bike Week in March! For more information and upcoming events, visit DougoutSportsGrill.com or Facebook.com/ TheDougOutSportsBarAndGrill.

“My focus is great food and great customer service,” Doug says. 16

From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO

1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.
