Milo Auckerman, who fronts Descendents, holds a doctorate in biology from UC San Diego. I feel compelled to mention these facts because punk music, for all of its quick, hardcore, aggressive, and anti-authority culture, is also extremely intelligent, well thought out, and empathetic in its message. Jason Cruz, who is the lead singer and songwriter for Strung Out, played on Saturday. I met with him before their set onstage, both of us sitting on the picnic tables and soaking in the ideal weather. He had this to say about the event: "I was just walking around and I got love from so many people...just really good vibes today. I am just so stoked to be here. I feel like we earned our place at this festival and every day just like in life, you have to earn your right to be there. You do that by being a good friend, a good person, husband, boyfriend, dad, and being part of a band...every song...every performance." Let that soak in, folks. This is a glimpse into how amazing this Sabroso Festival is and how important it is to preserve our unique punk culture born and bred in our own backyard. After being blown away by those enlightened words from Jason, I asked what brought them this far and what was in the future for the band. "If it wasn't for the surfers from this area, we wouldn't be here. We got here on the backs of the surfers and guys like Taylor Steele who would put us in his surf videos. We have a new album coming out in August that we just finished on Friday that was recorded in Anaheim with Cameron Webb.” (Webb is the founder of Maple Sound Studios and has worked with everyone from Madonna to Motorhead to Dr. Dre.) “We are calling it Songs of Armor and Devotion. I would like to think that we aren't moving backward in any way and showing some new stuff. The notes you will recognize, but I think it's important to show people something new...that's our job." Jake Kiley, who sings backing vocals to Jason and also plays the guitar for Strung Out, added this: "Growing up in Southern California and this area was incredible. The combination of metal and punk and also the skateboarding scene was just a really cool hybrid to be a part of growing up. Just the culture of it all and going to the shows was the best. We grew up loving bands like Suicidal Tendencies, Excel, old Metallica, and Bad Religion to name a few, and we were just trying to pay tribute to them but also put our own twist on it and bring in some other elements. We just had a blast with it and are so stoked and appreciative people are coming out still to see us and the other bands. This line-up is unbelievable. It's really cool. This new record of ours is going to be fast, tight, and old school. We are going to South America and Mexico in July to tour soon but around the rest of the world as well eventually this year." Just then Dan Root who plays guitar for the Adolescents came by. The Adolescents have on numerous occasions been voted by local Orange County magazines as arguably the best band to come out of Orange County. I asked him what Dana Point and the surrounding area around this festival meant to him and his band's music. "This is our first time playing here at Doheny and it's a beautiful spot. We absolutely love it here and it's a really cool event. We have always been a part of the surf and skate scene here and it has always been a big part of everything we did."

TELL ME, WHAT DO THE WORDS “FOREVER HOME” MEAN TO YOU? Do you imagine a polished retreat of pristine finishes? Or maybe you envision a comfortable beach cottage with a warm and welcoming design? As the Sea Pointe Construction team often says, “The answers are infinite and individual. No two will ever be the same.” After falling in love with a 1979 Spanish-style home, this San Clemente couple started their search for a credible, knowledgeable and trustworthy remodeling contractor who could bring their vision of a “forever home” to life. After meeting with numerous general contractors, the couple confidently partnered with Sea Pointe Construction’s team of design/build professionals. With a shared sense of excitement surrounding the whole home remodeling project, it was full speed ahead. While working with their Sea Pointe Construction design consultant to establish a design style, the couple found themselves gravitating towards warm toned and linear finishes. In the kitchen, slab front, walnut cabinetry with frosted glass and stainless steel accents create a stylized and polished space. YOU KNOW THEY’RE CREEPY, KOOKY, SPOOKY AND OOKY, BUT DID YOU KNOW THE ADDAMS FAMILY CAN SING? The macabre musical came to Camino Real Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano recently featuring all your TV and big screen favorites: Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday and Pugsley, along with Uncle Fester, Grandma, Lurch, some new friends of the family and some very old ancestors. We had a chance to sit down with the show’s youngest star right before getting in the make-up chair and taking the stage for opening night. Thirteen-year-old Chase Benson took on the highly coveted role of Pugsley, “The audition process was definitely nerve-racking,” Benson says. “There were a lot of people auditioning for the role of Pugsley, even my best friend. I’m surprised I got the part.” He shouldn’t be

surprised though. Not only did Chase have just the right amount of attitude, but he hit a difficult high note perfectly. Audience members sitting around the show’s executive producer, Tom Scott, might have even heard him mutter, “God, he’s good.” Chase has been acting, singing and dancing off and on since he was young… or shall we say younger, but this was his first time performing at this theater. The Laguna Beach resident tells us he really appreciates that the cast and crew treated him like a person and “not just a kid who can’t really do anything.” He says he would definitely do another show at Camino Real Playhouse, because the people in charge were so professional. “They’re strict if they have to be,” Chase explains. “They give The creepy character of Pugsley enjoys getting tortured by his sister, Wednesday.

amazing feedback and critiques and honestly everything that they do for the cast is insane. It’s amazing.” With just about an hour to go before the big debut, we asked Chase how he was feeling. “I’m very excited but also very nervous,” he says. Fortunately, they did a run-through for friends and family the night before and Chase tells us it was “almost flawless.” Chase attributes part of that successful performance to his on-stage dad. Robert Voccola, who played Gomez Addams, sent out an email to everyone before the preview telling them they were going to nail it. Chase says that spread a lot of positivity and made a big difference. Positivity seems to be a recurring theme for Chase. When we asked him what helpful advice he’s been given over the years, he responds with “Stay positive.” CONTINUED >

Executive producer, Tom Scott, shared his thoughts with us, “Attending theater gives you pleasure for an evening. Participating in theater gives you pleasure for life!” While Chase is certainly getting pleasure out of performing, he’s actually getting much more than that. “Theater, to me, is almost like an outlet, because I am in advanced classes and things, which builds up a lot of stress and everything, especially because there are multiple projects and 7th grade is basically a living nightmare.” He goes on to say, “It’s a place where I can just act out my emotions, feelings, thoughts and everything and just put it into the theater and it turns it into a whole new thing for me.” Chase says it’s something he looks forward to in a day. There’s lots for you to look forward to as well. Camino Real Playhouse has been around for 30 seasons and though “The Addams Family” has wrapped, there are plenty more shows planned through the end of the year: “The Graduate,” “Peter and the Star Catcher,” “Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Nile,” “Sherlock Holmes: Here There Be Dragons” and rounding out 2019 is the beloved “Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.” No word on what Chase’s next performance will be, but we asked the seventh grader for some insight into his long-term plan 10 years from now. Along with pursuing his dreams in the arts, he says, “I’m really looking to go to college for some type of Ph.D. in law.” Perhaps a role in “12 Angry Men” might be in his future, in which he can combine his two passions. Either way, the Benson family will support him. And they’re a lot less strange and deranged than Chase’s theatrical Addams family!
