JANUARY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF NOT ONLY A NEW CALENDAR YEAR BUT ALSO THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SETTING PERSONAL GOALS. Perhaps you’ve resolved to exercise more regularly, take up a new hobby or volunteer at the local homeless shelter. Whatever your goals may be, we hope the people, places, recipes and tips and tricks in this issue will inspire you to focus on wellness in the new year. And while diet and exercise are vital to your physical health, overall wellness includes your mental health as well. This month, we at Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle encourage you to live your best life by taking care of yourself both inside and out. We also want to warmly welcome the communities of Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano to the Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle family, formerly San Clemente Lifestyle. San Clemente Lifestyle launched in December of 2016 and because of the growth and support of the community we wanted to bridge the 3 cities together to learn more about each other and support the residents and business in our neighboring cities.

Getting To K n o w BRO A LIVELY CONVERSATION WITH DR. BILL REDMOND ARTICLE GINA SIEBERT PHOTOGRAPHY MARK WANGERIN WE RECENTLY HAD THE PLEASURE OF GETTING TO KNOW DR. BILL REDMOND, THE ORTHODONTIST AT BILL REDMOND ORTHODONTICS (BRO) AND BOY DID WE LEARN A LOT! Selfdescribed as “high energy with a laid-back vibe,” this natural born story teller entertained us with personal snippets of his childhood, his passion for anything board (surf, skate, snow) and the meaningful experiences in his life that led him to this place he calls home.
16
Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | January 2019
Bill is one of three children in the Redmond family and grew up in South Orange County. With an adventurous spirit even today, Bill grew up spending much of his time doing anything outdoors especially skateboarding and surfing along the coasts of San Clemente and Dana Point. When not riding waves or in school, he learned at a young age the value of hard work, and unbeknown to him the time he spent with his father would eventually show him what his life could look like… and it sure paid off! At the young age of thirteen, Bill started his first job working for his father. With $.25 in hand he would take the bus to his father’s dental office and spent his Saturday afternoons cleaning and vacuuming the entire office. His Dad, a very successful orthodontist for over 40 years certainly had lessons to teach and as Bill remarked a way of using “reverse psychology” to get him to ultimately make better choices. Ironically, his father’s lessons were much like the impact of braces on one’s teeth, “small, intentional adjustments that work towards a desired result.” He continued to work while going to school and at the age of 16 he started working in his father’s lab making the appliances his father needed for his patients. This is where he believes he discovered his natural talent for working with his hands which would later be the foundation for his success in dental school. He attended University of California San Diego, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and was a very successful member of the surf team. His talent earned him a sponsorship as a semi-pro surfer. However, he was unsure about what he truly wanted to do and continued to look at options related to artistry. Fortunately, his father knew that Bill would be an incredible orthodontist and set on a path to show him how he could use his natural talent and still create the life he desired. Bill remembers his father telling him about all the trips that he would take for dental “seminars”. The stories naturally peaked Bill’s interest though he was resistant to follow in his father’s footsteps. The seminar that sealed the deal was the one his father took to Cabo San Lucas every year, where they would work in the morning and then play on the water for the rest of the day! In Bill’s words “now that’s CONTINUED >

what I’m talking about…work, travel and play… not a bad lifestyle!” So off to dental school he went and little did he know that on the very first day of school he would meet the love of his life, his wife Erini. Bill was immediately smitten with Erini, a smart and talented classmate, but he thought he would be distracted from school if he spent too much time with her, so after a year of steering clear, he eventually succumbed to her charms and their love story would begin after a game of racquetball… and likely a bruised ego for Bill (do not challenge Erini to a game

Closer to home, both Bill and Erini seek out and offer free care to a select number of patients each year that desperately need help. Recognizing his abundance in family, friendships and good fortune, Bill continues to seek ways to make the lives of others easier and infuse fun while helping. One way he is doing this is by providing “house calls” for his patients who may not be able to physically get to his office but need immediate attention. You will know he is in the neighborhood if you see his BRO Van parked on the street. Don’t be shy, he loves it when you honk and wave as he drives on by. But, if you miss him driving around town, one place you are sure to find him is at home in San Clemente, his happy place, loving life with his BRO’s. A Holistic & Revolutionary Approach to Synchronize Your Body & Breath EXPAND YOUR METHOD OF WORKING OUT, DIVE INTO NEW WATERS & EXPERIENCE AN AUTHENTIC & HEALTHY WAY OF MOVEMENT.
WHAT IF A WORKOUT EXISTED THAT UNIFIED BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT? One which strengthened and toned the body while simultaneously increasing balance, range of motion, and energy. Or a type of movement which grounds, centers, and positively influences the nervous system. A method that feels fluid, rhythmic, and incorporates the entire body, versus one that’s jarring, impactful, and targets only one area at a time. The GYROTONIC® Method embodies all these beneficial qualities and the studio is local, 24941 Dana Point Harbor Drive C-120, at WAV (Wellness and Vitality Center). Dynamic duo, Scott and Alicia Parrish, have been avid proponents of the Gyrotonic Method for many years. Scott is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Structural Integrator (Rolfer), practicing as a certified trainer of the method since 2011. Alicia, a former professional ballet dancer, has been a certified teacher of GYROTONIC since 2004. “The Gyrotonic Method is a three-dimensional system operating both internally and externally,” says Parrish. “It is an intelligent form of movement and exercise that teaches us how to engage and equally as important, how to let go.” The world renowned Romanian dancer, Juliu Horvath, is the founding father of The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. After an injury in the 1970’s, Horvath intently began studying movement and meditation in his personal yoga practice. The insights he gleaned during this time evolved into his own unique exercise method. His ideas became concrete reality when Horvath invented the equipment currently in use at Parrish’s studio. Walking into WAV, the vibe is peaceful and welcoming. A banner on the wall proclaims, TAKE TIME TO DO WHAT MAKES YOUR SOUL HAPPY. 22

THER APY ON THE MOVE!
J.F. Shea Center is another equine therapy facility located right here in San Juan Capistrano since 1979. Its mission is “to improve the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horse-related programs.” It offers programs focusing on occupational, physical and speech therapy. The property is immaculately kept and is run with the utmost efficiency. Upon entering the facility, there is equipment that looks familiar. Treadmills, weight machines, and exercise equipment fill the gym. The difference being this inclusive workout center has equipment that allows all clients, despite their disabilities, use to the machinery. Your traditional treadmill is replaced by a treadmill with upper body suspenders that can fully support a person that can’t stand on their own. Weight machines have wheelchair accessibility. The center exceeds boundaries and exposes new opportunity. Equine therapy takes place in the open and closed arena, as well as the trails right behind the facility. Gross motor skills are exercised while riding the horses. Did you know that riding a horse uses the same muscles as walking via hippotherapy, therapy is done through movement mimicking? Horseback riding allows a client to get up to 3000 pelvic rotations per session. That many repetitions is quite the bang for your buck! On any given exercise, the client is the only one on the horse. A licensed medical professional leading the therapy walks alongside the horse.

Fine motor skill therapy disguises itself in the form of prepping the horses to ride, feeding them, or grooming them. A cerebral palsy client, about 8 years old, breaks carrots and loads them in a bucket. His therapy is the horses’ treat! Last year alone The Shea Center saw clients with a total of 78 different disabilities, ranging in age from 2-98 years old. Therapeutic riding comes highly recommended by doctors, military groups, veteran centers, and personal referrals. The efficiency with which the center is run allows maximum energy to be focused on taking care of the horses and the clients. 23 horses are in the therapy program. Like Otrá Más, all the horses are donated. These horses are groomed and exercised/trained daily. A veterinarian donates his time weekly, along with an equine dentist to maintain dental health. Their 5-star treatment has the horses in prime condition to care for the 1000 patients that pass through The Shea Center each year. In addition to the 40 employees, 250 volunteers work at the center each week. Their work is invaluable. They can be found helping in lessons as side walkers or leaders and assisting clients. Young volunteers, 14+ years old, merge their love of horses with community service hours. The Shea Center operates almost solely on donations. Not only are these donations what keeps the center running, but they also keep the cost affordable for clients. The Shea Center hosts two big fundraisers each year: The Annual Gala held at Montage Laguna Beach each June and The Annual BBQ and Family Faire held each September. These centers add such warmth, heart, and hope to our community. We are lucky to call them our neighbors. 28
