Becoming a Tourist in Your Own Everyday Life

There's something magical about the word "explore" that makes us think of distant lands and grand expeditions. But what if the most profound exploration happens not when we venture far from home, but when we dive deeper into the familiar? We've trained ourselves to look outward for discovery - always seeking the next destination, the next experience. But I wonder if we're missing something equally transformative that's been right under our noses all along. Our own neighborhoods, our city, even our homes are filled with unexplored territories. When did you last really notice the architecture on a street you drive daily? Or venture into some new neighborhoods you haven't experienced yet? I realized this when I was scoping out new finds to share with you in our upcoming issues. I found myself in a cute little shopping area west of Linworth and discovered shops I didn't know existed like Thalia & Dahlia! I discovered a few other awesome finds, and it made me wonder - how many gems exist within five miles of where I sit right now? This micro-exploration requires a different mindset than planning a vacation. It asks us to slow down rather than speed up, to notice rather than consume, to engage rather than escape. It's about becoming a tourist in your own life, approaching routine with fresh eyes and genuine curiosity. Maybe exploration isn't about how far you can go, but how deeply you can see. Maybe it's discovering that the person you've lived with for years still has untold stories, or that your creative abilities extend in directions you've never tested. Our hope is that this issue inspires you to explore the layers of depth surrounding you every day. To ask new questions of familiar places. To approach your regular rhythms with the same wonder you'd bring to a foreign country. Sometimes the most extraordinary discoveries happen not when we venture into the unknown, but when we finally see the known with new eyes. Take this month to explore and tell us what you find!

Big life changes plus a flexible, experienced builder came together for one Upper Arlington couple as they looked to rework their lifestyle. But what Crista and her husband didn’t realize was that downsizing doesn’t always have to mean getting smaller. When the couple moved from the Bedford home they raised their children in, it was a chance to rediscover a new kind of independence. J.S. Brown & Co. had helped with several projects in that home, so as the couple moved, it was only natural for them to call on the builders once again. “Working with Crista is pure joy.” Says Meridith, a designer at J.S.B. “She has a very good sense of design.” And the sentiment is
echoed: “I love to work with them over and over again,” says Crista, “they can do it all, no matter what life experiences we’re facing.” In fact, over the past 25 years, whether newly married with kids, having an elderly mother move in, downsizing at 60, or now upsizing to a forever home, “J.S. Brown has always come through.” Says Crista. Just like they did when they moved the laundry to the first floor, or opened up the kitchen to accommodate entertaining. "We also created a family room where there had not been one, so even in the small home we were able to entertain." Along with the soaring ceilings, gorgeous built-ins, and first-floor laundry, the couple learned they could push the limits with this builder. CONTINUED >

This 'can-do' attitude that allowed the couple to downsize is backed up by years of experience, and, as Crista says, “An amazing diversity of skill sets.” But for the two, downsizing was only a step in the right direction—not the destination they’d thought it was going to be. “Through downsizing, we gained insight into what our real priorities were,” says Crista, “we thought it was a wise choice at the time—no regrets—but it was too soon!” In fact, relocating and renovating the smaller location only afforded the couple four years. After paring down to less than half of what they previously had, the couple quickly realized that, in this stage of life, they needed more space, not less. "Having a smaller primary bedroom was a good idea when the kids were little," Crista laughs, "but now it’s nice to have a big bedroom again." Moving again, after such a short time, was not planned. “We really missed our yard.” Crista remembered. “When you get to this stage, your budget shifts a little. We started traveling more and being safe within a gated community meant we didn’t worry about leaving the house for days. But even that was not a fair trade off for the larger yard and natural light...” So, when the couple saw the yard of this new location, it was clear they needed to contact their favorite builders once again. “After working with them for so long, we

knew almost anything in the house was able to be changed.” Said Crista. And J.S.B. was taking measurements almost before the ink on the deed was dry. The magic J.S. Brown & Co. creates comes through their multi-step process. “The design phase,” says J.S.B. president Monica Lewis, “includes selecting materials, generating 3D visualizations, and creating the estimate.” Their design staff works closely with the homeowner—in this case, Crista—to come up with solutions amenable to the style of the house and the lifestyle of the owners. Material choice and lighting variation are critical to making a renovation feel right-sized for anyone changing their lifestyle. "Having a cohesive design that flows throughout the home is something J.S. Brown taught me over these past 25 years." says Crista. "Balance, proportion, color, lighting—all those things that help you enjoy the space." As the couple eases into their new forever home, they know they can call on J.S. Brown to make it work. “They are excellent teachers, leading us through the process and asking, ‘how can we make this better for you?’ all along the way.”

Ambiance: Throw pillows are a must. Pull them from your couches or invest in outdoor pillows that can be used repeatedly. A large throw is also essential to protect from moist ground and grass stains. Bring your favorite tunes with one of the many available portable speakers or unplug and enjoy the sounds of nature. Cut flowers add a wow factor.
Gear: You don’t have to own a picnic basket to have a picnic. But if you do bring a basket, make sure to have some way to chill your perishables and drinks. Reusable silverware, plastic wine or drink cups, and plates often come with a picnic basket set, but can also be purchased separately. Keeping it elegant, but easy (and cool) is the key!
Accompaniments: A cheese plate with fruit is the perfect start to your picnic fare. As with the cheese, your drink selections should coordinate with the main dish. For salads, pair accoutrements with the dressing in mind. A lemony herb vinaigrette dressing goes well with smooth cheeses and tart beverages such as lemonade, prosecco, or sauvignon blanc. Enjoy your perfect picnic!

Cool mediterranean air caresses your face. Smells of Italy tease your taste buds and pull at your heartstrings. You're due back home in two days, but the memories you've created on this boot-shaped peninsula will stay with you forever. Sound good? Then you’ve got an idea of what you can expect when Alexa Geno custom curates your travel plans. A traveler by nature, Alexa turned her love for adventure into a career. But what really called Alexa to be a travel advisor was her passion for giving others the same magical experiences that she's had with traveling. “What I learned about myself through travel," says Alexa, "has shaped me into the person I am today… And when I help someone else have the same transformation through their travels, that gift is truly priceless.” This is the thinking Alexa has used to make a name for herself in such a personalized industry. “Every travel advisor is so different,” she says, “as is each of their business models.” One can focus on pre-arranged packages while another only books extreme destinations, but what sets Alexa apart is in how she pieces together an unforgettable trip that eliminates decision fatigue and stress. “Sure, I’ll include the big tourist attractions on your itinerary,” Alexa says, “but what about those hole-in-the-wall restaurants or a cooking class with an Italian grandmother?” spinning her networks to weave an inspired itinerary, Alexa can design a tapestry of travel that immerses you in another world. “I love working with clients who want to navigate their chosen destination like a local - but want details designed just for them.” When Alexa curates your experience, your days are planned out and the logistics - down to the details - have been handled. This frees you to explore with wild abandon. “I am here to be in your pocket as you cross things off your bucket list.” Geno explains, “My clients receive robust and detailed itineraries, destination education, and have access to me 24/7 during travel. So, when you’re experiencing a new place, you’re not alone!” CONTINUED >

In New Zealand, adventurous travelers may want to bungee jump over a canyon or watch kiwi play in a forest glade. Create stronger relationships with your loved ones while riding rapids down the Shotover River near Queenstown, ending the day with a meal in some local spot you'd never know about if it weren't for your travel planner. Or, if the old world is more your thing, Alexa can tap her network to get an inside scoop on the best places to eat along the Greek isles, and coordinate taxis to navigate you through the winding streets of Athens for an unforgettable night out. But more than just nights, for Alexa, travel is the destination. “I work to craft an experience that is totally one-ofa-kind,” she says, “that’s where the best memories are made and where travelers grow their appreciation for exploration.” Building an itinerary with key stops tailor fit to your personal interests, with access to the agent who has all the connections and insider secrets, removes decision fatigue and allows you to relax with your family. And while it’s true that, as Alexa says, “everyone knows a travel advisor, and if they don’t, they know someone who knows a travel advisor…” having the right advisor can make all the difference.
ALEXA GENO Alexa Geno is your secret agent when it comes to planning a destination and itinerary that you’ll be talking about for years after. Take Your NEXT VACATION with EFFORTLESS FLAIR Effortless vacation style isn't about having the perfect outfit for every moment—it's about having the right foundation to make every moment look intentional. When you know how to build a capsule travel wardrobe, you'll avoid agonizing over what to wear and spend more time actually enjoying your getaway, all while looking like you have a personal stylist tucked in your carry-on. Here's your go-to list for this season's travels:
1. THE EFFORTLESS STATEMENT SET
A coordinated two-piece (linen, silk, or cotton) that transitions from day to night. Sets are easy to wear, photograph, and offers effortless ways to look put together. Bonus: you can mix and match the pieces with other items that you pack. I would recommend packing multiple sets to make it even easier to mix and match. For both men and women, simply focus on neutrals and, if you want to add color, make sure it coordinates well with other items in your luggage.
You work hard all year—your vacation style should feel cinematic, effortless, and unmistakably main character.

2. THE MOOD-ALTERING PIECE
A sweeping dress in a bold print or luscious fabric that makes you feel sensual, grounded, and free. Find something that moves with you and captures light beautifully. This is your dreamy piece— flowy fabrics with movement that captures the eye and works for any kind of event.
3. THE LUXE FLAT OR SCULPTURAL SANDAL
Find footwear that balances style and comfort. Look for interesting shapes or materials (like leather with architectural cutouts or metallic finishes). More than shoes—they're anchors for adventure, grounding your aesthetic wherever you land. This goes the same for men. Your footwear can also make an impact through the braided details of your sandals or the canvas of a casual slip-on loafer.
4. THE TRANSITIONAL THIRD PIECE
Think: kimono, over-sized linen blazer, a lightweight duster, or a gauzy button-down left open. This is your layering hero that adds polish without effort. It’s an aura amplifier that instantly makes your outfit feel styled and intentional.
5. INTERESTING AND IMPACTFUL SUNGLASSES
Sunglasses with personality is a must. They could be over-sized, cat-eye, or tinted lenses that feel more like “cinematic escape” than “just functional." Because you’re not sightseeing—you’re starring in your own travel film.
6. A SCULPTURAL CARRYALL
A bag that holds your essentials but looks like art—think woven textures, unique shapes, or buttery leather. Practicality meets poetry. You deserve a vessel that carries your dreams...and your SPF.
Sur(real) Style Sur(real) Style is a personalized styling company that blends fashion and psychology. Whether you're looking to evolve your wardrobe or preparing for a life shift, Courtney helps you dress with confidence, intention, and unmistakable presence through her styling services.
7. SIGNATURE SCENT OR TRAVEL CANDLE
Pack travel-sized fragrance or a tiny candle that evokes your essence or complements the location. Scent is meant to ignite memories and set the tone— infuse your travels with an olfactory signature.
8. ACCESSORIES WITH A STORY
A few intentional pieces such as a ring from a market you found during your travels, a layered necklace that serves as an easy throw-on, or a straw hat to protect your face from the sun (even if it's a cooler climate, because remember, safety first: don't get burnt).
