A New Year A New Beginning
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Marc Schwartz | marc.schwartz@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Kris Pepper | kris.pepper@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Northwest Bergen Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We want to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Likewise, having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be OK! It’s not the sometimes choices we make; it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy the heart-healthy olive oils and balsamic vinegars at Olive R Twist Olive Oil Co. in Ridgewood. If you're not hearing the way you think you should be, check out the new and expanded offices of Sophisticated Hearing, now located in Ridgewood. Make it your New Year's Resolution to address the one thing you most likely have put off but really need to address. Call Tarta Law for your Estate Planning consultation; you'll be happy and relieved you did! It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and prosperous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. Thanks for being a part of our family.

For most of us, January represents a clean slate and a fresh start. The new year is a time of reflection as well as a time of looking forward with both anticipation and wonder. What will the new year bring us? Joy or sorrow? Gain or loss? None of us can answer those questions; however, it’s important to be prepared for whatever the coming year brings—especially unfortunate events, such as death or divorce. Steven W. Tarta, Esq., has been helping people prepare with estate planning services since 1972. Throughout his years of experience, Steve has “seen it all.” His conservative and professional approach is centered on analyzing his client’s objectives while considering their unique situations and their assets and liabilities. This process allows him to match his client to the appropriate strategies for asset preservation, quality of life planning, and reduction of probate expense.
“There are three to four ‘must haves’ in everyone’s estate plan,” says Steve. “The right planning can help reduce stress for your family members and ensure that your wishes are honored when the time comes.”
WILLS A will, also known as a last will and testament, is a legal document that allows you to outline what happens to your assets after you die. If you have minor children, you can designate guardians and a plan for child care as well as select the appropriate person to manage your financial matters. “I also advise my clients to appoint a funeral representative to ensure their plans are executed throughout the funeral or memorial services. It’s also important to consider assigning a digital agent to handle all digital assets, accounts, social media platforms, and passwords,” says Steve.
“When I consult with clients who come in for a will, it’s important to understand their entire picture and what will give them peace of mind,” says Steve. “We discuss various options, including gifting money to loved ones each year. In 2023 you can gift $17,000 to any number of individuals each year without any tax repercussions. You do not need to do paperwork or hire an attorney. Just write the check—that’s good information to know!” Wills are a critical piece of the estate package for every individual. Steve also notes that if someone dies without a will, it will be cost-prohibitive for their heirs to administer their estate.
TRUSTS A trust may also be in order depending on one’s financial and personal circumstances. A trust is a legal arrangement that ensures that a person’s assets are

distributed to selected beneficiaries. The individual who establishes the trust places assets in the trust’s name and appoints a third party to manage those assets on behalf of the trust creator and beneficiaries. A trust goes into effect the moment it is established, unlike a will, which goes into effect after one’s death. Trusts are private documents, whereas a will becomes public record, so if there are delicate family situations where confidentiality is critical, one may want to consider setting up a trust. A trust can also offer you protection if you become incapacitated. One of the key benefits of a trust is that it simplifies the process of transferring assets and can save the designees significant costs in probate expenses. Your attorney can guide you in the decision between an irrevocable or revocable trust. An irrevocable trust means that you have removed the asset from your portfolio. A revocable trust allows you to maintain control over your assets placed therein for the balance of your life.
POWER OF ATTORNEY A durable power of attorney is also essential when making an estate plan. “Assigning a durable power of attorney will protect your interests in the case that you are unable to express your wishes yourself,” says Steve. “It’s important to designate that control to a person you fully trust—someone who will say ‘yes’
to honor your stated wishes regardless of their own opinions.”
LIVING WILLS Steve also strongly recommends a living will or healthcare proxy to provide direction for your loved ones to carry out your wishes when you cannot communicate them yourself. “When I went into private practice, I searched for a living will document that laid out instructions briefly and clearly. I could not find what I wanted, so I wrote my own proxy and have successfully used it for my clients for years. It’s never been contested in court,” says Steve. “A living will basically states, ‘when I can no longer speak for myself, I appoint this person to make medical decisions for me.’ It is an essential element of your estate plan.” In Steve’s experience, there is one misstep that many people make. “Sometimes clients don’t share the whole picture with their attorney. This may be just an oversight, or they may be embarrassed or ashamed of certain circumstances. Remember that the client-attorney privilege is completely confidential, and your words will never leave the office. It is to your benefit to share all of your information with your attorney so they can create a plan that is in your best interest.” Protect your legacy in 2023 by establishing your estate plan. “If you have these four documents, you have a vast majority of the work done!” says Steve. tartalaw.com

Whether you love to cook—or eat—chances are you have a bottle or two of olive oil in your pantry or have enjoyed a delicious dip with Italian bread at your favorite restaurant. But did you know that olive oil— especially extra virgin olive oil—is good for you too? Olive R Twist Olive Oil Co. in Ridgewood stocks the freshest and highest quality olive oils available on the market. Co-owners Marianne Krantz and Andrea Volter are experts on the benefits of incorporating olive oil into a healthy diet. “First-press, cold pressed, unrefined olive oils retain all their nutrients--nothing has been compromised, and all of their beneficial properties are intact,” says Marianne. “Many supermarket brands go through a refining process because they are produced from overripe or damaged olives. Contaminants slip into the oil during the second and third presses, which negate the oil’s beneficial properties. Unfortunately, refiners are permitted to add as little as 3% virgin olive oil to their mixture and claim that it is ‘100% pure’ olive oil. Therefore, it’s essential to consume olive oils that are unrefined in order to reap the nutritional benefits of the product.” The store’s unrefined olive oils are produced from early to mid-harvest olives. They are high in antioxidants and bioflavonoids, which can inhibit the growth of some cancers. They also help to control blood sugar, triglycerides, and inflammation and can relieve symptoms of arthritis and psoriasis. These healthy fats are low on the glycemic scale and can aid in weight stabilization and diabetes control. They’ve also been studied for their support of bone health through optimal calcium and magnesium absorption as well as their anti-viral, anti-microbial properties. Olive oil helps hydrate skin and nails, too! Olive oil has been proven to prevent the formation of LDL (the bad cholesterol) and help control blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack. There are several things to look for when shopping for high-quality olive oil. First, check for a “crush” or “harvest” date (not to be confused with the arbitrary “best by” date). Ensure the oil is unrefined, and consume it within 14-18 months of its crush date. Olive R Twist “follows the crush” by sourcing olive oils from both the northern and southern hemispheres, allowing them to have the freshest oils available in the world. CONTINUED >

RECIPE
LEMON WHITE BEAN DIP INGREDIENTS • 1-15 oz can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed • ¼ C tahini • ¼ C Olive R Twist Olive Oil Lemon Fused Olive Oil • ¼ C Olive R Twist Dill Infused Olive Oil • 1 small clove garlic • Pinch of chili flakes • Sea salt
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Puree the beans, tahini, olive oil and garlic in a food processor until smooth. 2. With the machine running, drizzle in up to ¼ C of water to thin the dip and attain the desired consistency. 3. Place the dip in a serving bowl, drizzle olive oil over the top, and add chili flakes and sea salt. 4. Serve with pita bread, chips, and/or raw veggies. “Some people are purists and like the taste of our single varietal olive oils, while others enjoy getting creative with infused oils which highlight a wide variety of different flavors,” says Marianne. “Infused oils are great for cooking and baking,” says Andrea. “Swap out cooking oil or butter with an infused olive oil in your recipes. It’s delicious.” And don’t overlook the selection of quality balsamic vinegars in the store. “They are all from Modena, Italy, and are aged through the Solera method by fractionally blending the vinegars so that the finished product is a mixture of ages from 12-20 years, says Andrea.” Balsamics provide similar health benefits to olive oils. They are a digestive aid containing high levels of probiotics and antioxidants, which help normalize blood pressure and stabilize cholesterol levels. Think out of the box when using balsamics. They can be served as salad dressings and used as marinades. Try drizzling them over fruit, berries, cheese, ice cream, or yogurt. They can act as a substitute to sugar to sweeten sauces or be added to sparkling water for flavor. Olive R Twist has over 60 oils and balsamic vinegars to taste in the store. “We love to help our customers try them, and we enjoy seeing our repeat customers come back for more,” says Marianne.

Hear Now! T H E I M P O R TA N C E O F H E A R I N G W E L L N E S S
What are some of your favorite sounds? Ocean waves, children laughing, a favorite song. When was the last time you really appreciated your ability to hear? It is one of the five senses which many of us take for granted. Hearing comes easily to some of us but what if you had to really struggle to understand what someone was saying? Some people think hearing loss is not a big deal, but recent evidence shows us that hearing loss impacts us more than we think. In the past it was thought that hearing loss mainly affected your communication ability and therefore your relationships with family and friends. Now we understand that hearing loss not only affects your relationships, but it also has an impact on your overall health. Individuals with untreated hearing loss are more likely to avoid conversations, new experiences, and social gatherings. When someone has difficulty hearing they tend to avoid conversations because they have to ask people to repeat things they did not hear properly. This in turn may lead to depression, social isolation, and possibly cognitive decline. Research from John Hopkins shows that brain scans of adults with hearing loss may contribute to a faster rate of brain atrophy. We hear with our brain not just our ears. If the brain is not receiving proper speech signals because of hearing loss,
then the brain must work harder to put the pieces of the conversation together to make sense. Sometimes the brain does this properly, other times the brain thinks the person said something completely different. There are also emotional impacts of untreated hearing loss. Someone who does not hear clearly may appear more fatigued, frustrated, or irritable. Certain health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease may increase your risk of hearing loss. As an audiologist many people come to see Dr. Olson because they have difficulty hearing conversations. Almost everyone comments about how important it is to hear and how they wished they protected their hearing at concerts or wore sound protection when mowing the lawn. Others say they used to be able to hear in restaurants but now have difficulty whenever there is any kind of interfering background noise. Many things can affect our hearing and it is important to act now to protect and appreciate this important sense.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO ENSURE YOU HEAR WELL FOR YEARS TO COME? 1. Wear hearing protection in the presence of loud sounds. This includes when you attend concerts, use power tools or yard equipment, watch fireworks, ride motorcycles among many other activities.

2. Have your hearing tested to measure where your hearing is today to establish a baseline. It is important to know if you have normal hearing or if you are starting to develop a hearing loss. As years pass by, have your hearing re-checked to monitor and address any changes. 3. If your only difficulty is hearing speech in the presence of noise, then you may benefit from auditory training. This involves listening exercises to improve how your brain processes speech in complex situations.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO IMPROVE YOUR HEARING? 1. As stated above, the first step is to have your hearing tested. If a hearing loss is present, an audiologist can explain which speech sounds are more challenging for you to hear. 2. Hearing aids can help to improve your hearing both in quiet as well as background noise environments. There are many different options and technology levels that an audiologist can discuss with you.
30
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
3. If you currently wear hearing aids but still have difficulty hearing, they may need to be readjusted. There is a hearing aid verification test called Real Ear Measurement, REM. This test takes into account your hearing loss, and measures how you hear speech with your hearing aids. If you have not had Real Ear Measurement testing before, your hearing aids can be readjusted to make sure they are meeting target settings. In a continued effort to serve Bergen County residents with the best audiological services possible, Sophisticated Hearing has moved its Hearing Care Center from Ho-Ho-Kus to Ridgewood. The brand new, expanded facility includes state-of-the-art technology to test your hearing in quiet and noisy environments. For those who wear hearing aids, Sophisticated Hearing uses the gold standard of hearing aid fitting verification which is Real Ear Measurement. Dr. Olson can also assess your hearing with and without hearing aids so you can “hear” for yourself the improvement in hearing with the new hearing technology. sophisticatedhearing.com
