The Thanksgiving season is a unique time of year. In the hustle and bustle, it can be all too easy to forget that the purpose of this holiday is to actually slow down and take stock, not just of the year thus far, but also of your life, your relationships, and your personal accomplishments. We can all get so caught up in turkey and trimmings and holiday sales that we forget how important it is to be grateful for the blessings around us. The world we live in makes it difficult to be thankful sometimes. The digital age of light-speed news and social media means you’re constantly being confronted with someone who is more than you: who has more, who does more, who achieves more. The drive to constantly improve yourself and level up can be relentless. Combine this with the high levels of stress and worry that we all live under, and it can be hard to see the forest for the trees. Finding the positives might not just seem challenging, it can seem like it’s not even worth the effort when there’s so much still to be done. Here’s the trouble with that mindset: you can never see how far you’ve come if you keep moving the finish line. Ambition is a good thing to have, but it can drive you into exhaustion and bitterness if you let it take you too far. The only real way to combat it is to take a moment to breathe and look at the wonderful things that surround you. Appreciating your own hard work and the work of others, taking time to love and to be loved, and using the positives of your life to make the world a little brighter for others– that’s what this time of year is really about. Our featured articles this month touch on the community efforts of the Ramsey Free Public Library and their programs to help educate and enrich their town, and of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce as they strive to support and promote local businesses. We hope that their stories inspire you to feel grateful for similar presences in your own life, and to find a way to spread that joy around at this important time of year! Reaching Ramsey OUT IN

It’s been another “Fall of Fun” over at the Ramsey Free Public Library, where entertaining and educational programs for kids, teens, adults and seniors can always be found. This season, the library is continuing its new 1-on-1 tech assistance program, which focuses on helping senior citizens of the Ramsey community navigate general internet and device use. The sessions last 30 minutes and are conducted by a professional librarian on staff. 1-on-1 tech assistance sessions are also a great opportunity to learn about the library’s free digital services (like borrowing ebooks from Libby or Hoopla) and receive step-by-step instructions on how to use the library’s printer, scanner or copier. Appointments are available monthly and can be booked over the phone at 201-327-1445 or on the library’s online event page at ramseylibrary.org/events. CONTINUED >

“From free programs and events to modern collections and services, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.” This online event page is also a great place to explore all of the other programs the library offers for kids, teens and adults. For the youngest members of the Ramsey community, baby and preschool storytimes at the library are provided to foster a love of reading at an early age. Ms. Catherine runs these storytimes, always guaranteeing plenty of sing-along songs and smiles for families in attendance. Grade school children can consistently find exciting things to do at the library, especially at Ms. Maggie and Ms. Ji’s crafting classes. Through varied programming, like Read to a Therapy Dog or Science Friday, kids are encouraged to build their literacy and STEM skills at the library. But learning opportunities at the library aren’t strictly limited to kids - teens and adults can sign up for a variety of fascinating lectures and workshops. Just this season, young adults in high school partook in an engineering workshop, where they were challenged to design, test and improve a prosthetic arm prototype. Moreover, these teens have found practice in civic engagement through the library’s brand new Teen Advisory Board, where they are encouraged to have a say in programs and events for their demographic. Meanwhile, middle schoolers have been meeting at the library this autumn to discuss their favorite manga books with YA librarian Ms. Brigitte, finding a renewed interest in reading as a result of book club discussion. Adults can also find numerous book clubs to join at the library, from Book Chat with Ms. Julie and Good Reads with Ms. Debbie to a non-fiction and cookbook club too. If book discussion isn’t your interest, there’s still plenty to do at the library as

an adult, including yoga classes, afternoon movies, crafting workshops, author visits and special presentations. Some recent highlights for adult programming include a visit from New York Times bestselling author Ann Napolitano, as well as a virtual tour around NYC to explore the city’s distinguished memorials. If learning is indeed a lifelong journey, then adults can find no better place than the library to continue their expedition. All in all, these programs for kids, teens, adults and seniors reflect the library’s mission, which aims to enhance the quality of life in Ramsey by providing access to lifelong learning tools, fostering a welcoming and collaborative environment, and cultivating transformative experiences through diverse services and collections. Speaking of collections, just a quick browse through the building demonstrates that the Ramsey Free Public Library breaks the age-old imagery of libraries as antiquated structures within their communities. While novels, non-fiction books, movies and music still form the foundation of the library’s collection, patrons will also find comics, board games and even pressure washers available for checkout with their library card. The library’s L.O.T. (Library of Things) houses a unique assortment of items that can be borrowed just like a book. Tools for DIY projects, backyard games for parties and STEM kits for at-home learning are just a few of those “things” the library now offers. Being thankful, especially at this time of year, is not just about acknowledging your blessings and being grateful for the good things in your life. It’s also about finding ways to spread those blessings around. For the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and its members like Betti Russo, this is an everyday occurrence. We got the chance to speak with Betti about some programs the Chamber of Commerce has run in the past, and some that they’re looking forward to in the future!

Q: THE OAKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IS A BIG FORCE IN CHARITY WORK IN THE COMMUNITY. CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME PREVIOUS PROJECTS AND THE IMPACTS THEY’VE HAD? A: This year, we’ve launched new initiatives to strengthen community and business ties, including sponsored bingo at the Oakland Senior Center, and tailored services during Senior Citizen Week. We collaborated with Oakland Girl Scout troops and local businesses, resulting in vibrant spring murals by the troops, courtesy of U-Paint Studios and Visions Federal Credit Union. We also joined hands with Oakland Recreation for the annual Fever Pitch Parade, marking the end of baseball season. Teacher Appreciation Week was marked by our facilitation of gift donations to a

few of Oakland’s elementary schools, thanks to partnerships with local PTOs. We also introduced ‘Restaurant of the Month’ and ‘Restaurant Week.’ We’re proud of our strides in fostering business relationships and eagerly anticipate furthering these connections in the future.

Q: WHAT IDEAS OR INSPIRATION LED TO THE RESTAURANT WEEK INITIATIVE BEING INTRODUCED? A: We’re always looking for new and exciting ways to support our local businesses! As we were wrapping up last year, I learned that our chairperson was interested in adding some new initiatives to the Chamber’s lineup for the upcoming year. When I heard that the idea of Restaurant Week was being considered, I was all over it! I was honored to be given this responsibility. CONTINUED >

Q: AS THE DIRECTOR OF RESTAURANT WEEK, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ITS MOST EXCITING ASPECT? A: We decided to expand Restaurant Week into a monthly event with the addition of Restaurant of the Month, in which one restaurant is selected and highlighted throughout the month with extra social media exposure, a video interview with the owner, and a blog for our website, to name a few things. This gives me the opportunity to work one on one with each of our member restaurants. I get to collaborate with the owners, learn their backstory as well as their mindset and business philosophy, and other little intricacies about the restaurants that I wouldn’t have otherwise known.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PARTS OF THE COMMUNITY HERE, FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? A: My husband and I previously lived in Ringwood for 20 years and raised our family there, and I always enjoyed giving back to my community. Having been in Oakland for just 4 years I was eager to immerse myself in the community and the Chamber provided the perfect opportunity for me to do that. The new addition of Keller Williams Prosperity to Oakland at 383 Ramapo Valley Road was an added bonus! When it comes to business, nothing could be better than working and serving the community where I live, especially with the support of an incredibly successful brokerage behind me. I’ve been in real estate for 14 years, specializing in home-stating and luxury home marketing, and I believe that servicing my clients at the highest level is paramount. I also believe that educating my clients and community about everything real estate is essential and I strive to do that every day, because whether you’re making a move or not, real estate is everyone’s business. My motto has always been “Do What You Love and Love What You Do” and I believe doing that with people I have developed a know, like, and trust relationship with is essential. Q: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE COMING UP FOR THE OAKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE THAT NORTHWEST BERGEN RESIDENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT? A: We’re welcoming the return of our Toys for Tots event in early December, in collaboration with Operation Toy Train and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. This fun event takes several months of planning and collaborating with our local businesses and community. After a successful turnout this year, we are also hoping for Restaurant Week to return and continue to grow for many years to come! With great initiatives like these designed to bring friends and neighbors together, it’s no wonder Betti and other Oakland residents feel so deeply connected to the community!

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table.
