LIFESTYLE LETTER

To Your Health & To Your Wellness A NEW YEAR AND A NEW LOOK! City Lifestyle Northwest Bergen is taking on a new look for 2022. We are excited to introduce you to some new sections of our magazine during the next few months. Be on the lookout for Business Monthly, City Scene, and Local Experiences. We are also ramping up our digital platforms in order to offer more to those of you who love your computers and smartphones. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community-focused; being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in northwest Bergen. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and making a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness, and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind, and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health, and love. Take a journey by reading an inspirational story about Kathy Robinson who has an insatiable passion to help women understand the directions and processes they will undergo in order to change their life trajectory. Speaking about one's physical health, let's take a spin over to the CycleBar in Wyckoff, where you get more than just a great workout; you become immersed in a culture of friendship and fitness. When it comes to good eats, take a ride over to Alt Eats in Ho-Ho-Kus. Foods are vegan and can be prepared gluten and dairyfree, packed with nutritious ingredients, and they are simply delicious. Last but certainly not least, back to Wyckoff to Bolger Short-term Rehab at Christian Health where a holistic approach to health and wellness services the entire community and people of all ages – not just seniors. Here's to a Healthy and Happy 2022!

Kathy Robinson FROM WALL STREET TO WELLNESS ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH FLANNERY

“Traveler, there is no path. The path is made by walking. By walking you make a path” –Antonio Machado From Wall Street to wellness, Kathy Robinson has gone the distance when it comes to transformation. After years of working as a risk and audit executive, Kathy decided to take her own chances in following a new path. When she was 50, Kathy decided to retire from corporate life and had to consider what she wanted to do moving forward, exploring various interests along the way. “My heart led me toward the field of well-being with a focus on women in professional and personal transition.” Kathy became a certified wellness coach in 2018. She had moments of self-doubt until she realized that a lifetime of corporate risk management had many parallels to wellness coaching. “My job consisted of identifying all of the things that can go wrong, assessing them, coming up with action plans, and addressing them. I do the same things for my clients now.” “Wellness is the natural state of the body. However, it’s much more than just a physical state,” says Kathy. Lifestyle and mental outlook play a significant role in helping a person move toward optimal wellness. When clients come to Kathy with a goal for the future or the desire to pursue a passion, Kathy helps them understand the directions and processes they will need

to undergo. Whether someone wants to write a book, become healthier, or change careers, the transition can begin in various ways. “It could be a physical change or an emotional change,” says Kathy. “Whatever the starting point is, you begin there and then take it deeper, step-by-step. The mind, body, and spirit all provide pathways that can be turning points for taking the action to do something new.” When one decides to commit to a major life change such as a big career move, losing weight, or pursuing a passion, Kathy advises her clients to make intentional choices that can positively affect their well-being. “An intention is mindful and purposeful, and it helps a person get to the root of why they do something or why they want something,” says Kathy. “Goals are external, but intentions are inwardly focused. They resonate with a person and help them to understand who they truly are. When you make intentional choices, you create positive habits that stick because they are essential to you. Thus, it’s a holistic, specific formula that will be different for every person.” Kathy recommends taking a journey from “head-to-heart” by questioning or challenging your usual routines and assumptions. Determine to make mindful choices regarding how you spend your time and explore what delights you. Don’t get caught up in the importance of the practices; be intentional about the sense CONTINUED >

of well-being they provide you. For example, working out and being in good physical condition allows you to have the energy to enjoy life with the people you love. Sometimes embracing life means taking chances and making changes that will help you learn and grow. “If you fight the change, something else will make you learn those lessons. If you embrace the change, it can be more satisfying and more adventurous,” says Kathy. In addition to her personal coaching and corporate workshops, Kathy recently authored The Athena Principles. “Athena was a Greek goddess who embodied both strength and wisdom, two qualities I help my clients access in themselves,” says Kathy. “Tapping into inner wisdom is the first step toward reimagining midlife and reinventing yourself.” Kathy produces podcasts and blogs sharing her depth of well-being expertise. She will soon be launching her new “vancast” from her customized van as she travels across the country interviewing health and wellness experts and individuals who have made the change to lead a better life. Kathy’s journey has been one of experience, learning, and openness to change, reminding us all to “embrace the life that’s in front of you.” athenawellness.com

CYCLEBAR LET 2022 BEGIN WITH A SPIN!

| FITNE S S

When you take a cycling class at CycleBar in Wyckoff, you are getting more than a great workout. Owner Pedro Trujillo has built a culture of friendship and fitness that extends far beyond its storefront at Boulder Run Shopping Center. Having immigrated from his home in Venezuela to the United States at the age of 29, Pedro’s education included a Master’s in economics, which eventually led him to a position with BD in Franklin Lakes. After spending 15 years in the corporate environment, Pedro decided he wanted to do something aligned with his love of a fitness-based lifestyle. Always a fan of cycling classes, he began researching spin franchises and found CycleBar, opening his doors five years ago in October 2016. Spinning provides cardio health benefits in a low-impact atmosphere. You can work out at your own pace, and it’s extremely convenient, open to people of any age or fitness ability. Many of Pedro’s clients have shared with him that their doctors have been pleasantly surprised with cardiovascular results once they began practicing a cycling regimen. “Cycling classes are great for a person’s mental health as well,” says Pedro. “A good cycling workout gives you a sense of accomplishment and can release pent-up emotion. It’s not just physical; it can help people going through difficult circumstances to clear their heads.” When hiring instructors, Pedro brings in candidates who exhibit a love for people and the community. “Our instructors have a sense of belonging, and they love sharing what they do with others to help them achieve their fitness goals. They are dedicated to the profession and their clients; their hearts are in the right place.

Each instructor brings their style and personality along for the ride. They curate their playlists so they have the freedom to take ownership of the class while adding their own dash of creativity. Instructors can also change the “Cycle Theater” ambiance through dramatic lighting, synched to fit the class's mood, music, and feel. CycleBar management oversees everything to ensure that members are happy and the classes exceed their high expectations. CycleBar offers a variety of class styles to suit every preference. “Connect” classes focus on the rhythm of the music without worrying about numbers or stats. “Performance” classes are stat-based to drive cyclists to challenge themselves throughout the class. “Classic” rides are a combination of both. Access to the app allows members to track their performance and goals to see their history and measure their progress over time. Class hours suit all types of workstyles and lifestyles—accommodating early morning commuters as well as moms after dropping the kids off at school. There are evening classes available for those who prefer to train after work. “We make it convenient by offering cycling shoes, water, and towels,” says Pedro. “All you have to do is come in wearing your workout clothes.” If you’re new to indoor cycling, don’t worry. It’s as easy as riding a bike. CycleBar staff gets new riders acclimated to the studio at their first visit and helps them set up the bike properly. As a community-based business, Pedro feels a strong commitment to creating a sense of community throughout the studio. “We create a space to come exercise, meet people and create social interaction. We hope our members become friends both CONTINUED >

inside and outside of CycleBar. As humans, we all need that connection. To that end, CycleBar also offers charity rides as fundraising events. They arrange for an event at a low fee for a non-profit, and the charity sells tickets to its supporters. “It’s a nice get-together for the community,” says Pedro, “we work hard to make it affordable and easy for organizations.” CycleBar offers term memberships as well as cycling packages. There are discounts available for teachers, students, nurses, and the military. Pedro has also recently acquired another fitness concept called Row House in Washington Township. A similar model to CycleBar, except it’s with rowing machines rather than cycles. “I’m fortunate to have been able to come to the U.S. from Venezuela. I’m pursuing the American dream,” he says. cyclebar.com/location/wyckoff

Bolger Short-term Rehab at

Christian Health A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness 22

F E AT U R E | HEALTH + WELLNE S S

Situated on 78 acres overlooking the Ramapo Mountains in Wyckoff, Christian Health offers the most comprehensive selection of services and lifestyle options on one campus of any senior-care provider in northern New Jersey. Known for its compassionate, caring environment, Christian Health has a long history of supporting seniors’ health and wellness from a holistic perspective. And nowhere is this more evident than at Bolger Short-term Rehab. “One of the greatest benefits of having this beautiful rehabilitation gym and wellness center on our campus is that it helps us deliver the full continuum of care for all of our residents,” says Erica LaGruth, PT, DPT, LSVT BIG Certified Clinician, Director of Outpatient Rehabilitation. “Whether you live at The Vista – our new retirement community – or our Longview Assisted Living community, you have access to the skills and knowledge of a full-time, on-site team of licensed physical, occupational, and speech and language therapists.” What many northwest Bergen County residents may not know is that the Bolger Gym and Wellness Center provides both inpatient and outpatient short-term rehabilitation for people recovering from illness, injury, or surgery. “People often tell us they had no idea we offered outpatient rehab,” says Erica. “We are here to serve the entire community and people of all ages – not just seniors.” When the center opened its doors in 2015, services were provided on an inpatient basis for those transitioning from the hospital to home. Erica, who has been with Christian Health for seven years, assumed her current role in 2017 when the scope of services was expanded to include outpatient rehab. Together with Jane Mendoza, PT, Director of Inpatient Rehabilitation, they oversee the health and wellness services for the entire organization. Christian Health offers high-quality senior living, short-term rehabilitation, and mental health services. As the non-profit healthcare organization has expanded to meet the changing demands of the community, so has the need to make short-term rehab and other health and wellness options more convenient to residents. “It is the personal investment of our entire team that makes us different. They are focused not only on each person’s recovery, but their overall health and wellness.” -ERICA LAGRUTH

“We are growing as the campus grows,” says Erica, whose team is currently working to create a dedicated treatment space at The Vista. “Residents can access personal training services in their own stateof-the-art gym, and enjoy a variety of group classes including aqua fitness, chair exercises, yoga and guided meditation.” The Longview Assisted Living community also has its own separate gym for residents who want to pop in for quick appointments rather than using the larger Bolger gym. In addition, a staff therapist travels regularly to work with residents of Christian Health’s two senior communities in Wayne. Equal care and consideration are given to those who come to the Bolger gym for outpatient rehab. For example, all outpatient therapy was recently moved to a different building on campus. “We relocated these services out of concern for the safety of both visitors and residents,” Erica says. “Now, folks who are coming in

24

F E AT U R E | HEALTH + WELLNE S S

for a therapy appointment no longer have to enter a residential building.” Asked what sets Bolger Short-term Rehab at Christian Health apart from other rehabilitation services in Bergen County, Erica notes that they have a larger staff with a wider range of specializations. This ensures that people seeking a specific type of treatment will be supported by highly trained, highly skilled specialists. The Transitional Care Suite is also unique to Bolger rehab. This fully-functioning miniature apartment allows therapists to help transitioning inpatient residents by simulating at-home environments where patients can perform actual tasks – from reaching shelves to bathing to doing laundry – rather than just talking through a routine. Therapists at Bolger Short-term Rehab are dedicated to delivering the best possible patient experience. The staff continually seeks input from the patient and his or her family, who are valued members

of the care team. “Our staff builds a wonderful rapport to ensure the treatment is aligned with what each client is looking to achieve. Nothing is more frustrating than not knowing why you’re doing something,” says Erica. Above all, Erica says, “It is the personal investment of our entire team that makes us different. They are focused not only on each person’s recovery, but their overall health and wellness.” She recalls a gentleman who was recovering from a severe stroke. “We worked with him and his wife together on what to expect and the nuances of being an effective caregiver. He made significant progress, and six months after he returned home, we received an email with a video of the two of them dancing on their anniversary. It meant so much to our team, knowing they remembered us and the difference we had made in their lives.” christianhealthnj.org

HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS

T R E ATS AT A LT E ATS JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED

Still think eating healthy means sacrificing taste? How about avocado toast with mango, cilantro, red onions, and lime or a bowl of truffle mac and cheese? Offered at Alt Eats Café in Ho Ho Kus, all are vegan, can be prepared gluten and dairy-free, packed with nutritious ingredients, and delicious. “There was this misconception that eating healthy meant eating salads or cooked carrots, that there weren’t flavorful choices,” says Alt Eats owner Lori Iannone. “We have come a long way to change that; adding spices for flavor, different textures and luxurious fats.” Iannone has put together two tasty recipes, each bursting with nutritious ingredients. The escarole in the Escarole and Bean Soup is high in fiber, vitamins C and A as well as folate. And the cannellini beans provide a high fiber and protein content. The Aussie Shake, loaded with antioxidants and vitamins, tastes almost too good to be so healthy. “When you make a smoothie with fresh fruits you know exactly what’s going in your body,” she says. “And when you eat better, you feel better.”

E SC A ROLE A N D BE A N SOU P INGREDIENTS • ¼ cup olive oil • 12 cloves garlic • 3 heads escarole, washed and cut up • 3 quarts vegetable stock • Two 15-ounce cans of cannellini beans, drained and rinsed • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes • Salt & pepper to taste • Freshly grated parmesan cheese for serving

DIRECTIONS In a large pot sauté the olive oil and garlic until brown. Add the escarole, stir and cook it down for about 10 minutes. Then add the vegetable stock, beans, and red pepper flakes, season with salt and pepper to taste, and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parmesan for serving. Makes 6 quarts and freezes well.
