Year-End Thoughts

Practice Limited to Elder Law, Wills, Trusts, and Estate Planning 1. Do you have an Irrevocable Trust to hold your assets, so your estate is reduced in size resulting in a reduction in Probate Expense as well as a Reduction in taxation? 2. Do you have a Revocable Living Trust which will reduce your probate expense by at least 50%? 3. Have you appointed a Funeral Agent in your estate plan? 4. Have you addressed Digital Assets in your estate plan? 5. Is your Last Will and Testament notarized? 6. Is your Estate Plan consistent and current with Federal and New Jersey laws? 7. The law is about to change again under the current president. Does your current Estate Plan address the incoming law? 8. The current exemption before Federal Estate taxation is $11,000,000.00. This amount may be reduced to $3,000,000.00. Are your assets insulated so your estate will fall under this number? 9. Does your present Health Care Proxy meet your current intentions? 10. Have you lowered your probate expenses so you can pass these savings on to your children and or grandchildren or other chosen beneficiaries? 11. Have you considered an annual tax-free gift to your children and or grandchildren?

“It also lends itself to large group activities. We can arrange for groups of 20 up to several hundred.” Campgaw hosts high school and middle school ski clubs, moms’ groups, church youth groups, and Boy and Girl Scout Troops. The ski lodge offers retail sales for ski accessories, t-shirts, and hoodies. Grab lunch or a snack when you need a break from the commissary, which offers burgers, hot dogs, soup, and more. Settle in alongside the giant wood-burning fire pit in the center of the lodge, where a blazing fire is always ready to welcome chilly skiers. Since it first opened in 1969, Campgaw has been a “frozen asset” of our community. The site employs about 700 residents throughout the winter and provides the perfect, close-to-home skiing for adults and kids alike. It’s an easy drop-off for parents of teens and a great place to unwind with a few runs in after work. Stop by and enjoy all that this Mahwah mountain has to offer! skicampgaw.com

CELEBRATE AN OLD FASHIONED HOLIDAY Warwick Valley Visitor Information Center

SPEND A DAY OR WEEKEND GETTING INTO THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON IN CURRIER AND IVES STYLE. Manhattan is usually the go-to, but how about a more peaceful and pastoral trip to the beautiful Hudson Valley? Pack up the car and head over the river and through the woods to Warwick, New York. Mike Johndrow, Executive Director of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce, is an avid fan of the Warwick Valley area, which comprises the New York villages of Warwick, Florida, Greenwood Lake, and Vernon, New Jersey. "I moved here from Sullivan County intending to stay temporarily and then move down south to retire," he says. "I love it so much here; I'm not going anywhere!" "Warwick is an amazing location," he says. "Especially during the holidays. The Warwick Valley has so much to offer, and it's a great getaway for residents of Bergen County. There's so much to see and do, and we're only a 45-minute drive from Bergen County!"

TRAVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)

Voted one of "The Best Weekend Getaways in America," Warwick is an easy, northwest car ride through Ringwood, Greenwood Lake, and West Milford; it's close by but a world away—whether you choose to make it a day trip or an overnight stay. Known for its wide variety of dining options, Warwick has over 55 dining establishments in town. From five-star restaurants to small cafés, this town appeals to every palate and appetite. "There are another 125 eateries within a 10-mile radius of the town," says Mike. The charming Village of Warwick is dog-friendly and easily walkable. A relaxing stroll down Main Street will lead you to a friendly retail shopping experience with clothing boutiques, home décor stores, unique artisan studios, and jewelry shops. "You won't see too many chain stores here," says Mike. "We promote our small businesses, and they all promote each other. Everyone is an ambassador of the Village. If one of our stores doesn't have what the customer wants, they will direct them on where they can get it." December is a beautiful month to visit the Warwick Valley Region and get some holiday shopping done in a festive atmosphere. Each year, Warwick's Merchant Guild sponsors "Home for the Holidays" shopping throughout the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Stroll the pine-laden streets, and check off your gift list while having a holiday experience of your own. There's free parking, too! If your kids are in tow, they'll want to hop on the free horse and wagon rides through Main Street. Choral groups will be caroling throughout town, and you'll have a chance to meet Santa!

GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are. —Anna Sarol

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

Anna Sarol

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
