HOW THE NORTHLAND'S SMALL TOWNS — AND BEYOND — WERE TRANSFORMED INTO FILM SETS

Sandra Martin lives in Olathe, but she loves Kansas City’s Northland. “Park University is so beautiful — actually all of downtown Parkville and Weston,” says Sandra. “The Northland is a movie maker’s dream.” Sandra is a movie maker, specifically a director, and her husband, Isacc Alongi, is a cinematographer. Together they make those heartfelt movies that fill our cable channels during the holiday season and beyond. Some people find them sappy. Others are passionate. Either way, Hallmark Christmas movies, here in the hometown of Hallmark, are as much a part of the holiday season for some folks as mistletoe and candy canes. As you are bundling up around a cozy fire with a cup of eggnog allowing your television to fill your heart with cheer, be looking for a few familiar scenes and faces that appear in Sandra’s movies. It was hotter than blazes in August 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, when Sandra and crew descended upon Weston for the making of
“Rebuilding a Christmas Dream,” which aired on the Lifetime channel. It’s about a young woman who moves home to repair the old Victorian home her grandmother left her. She hires a single dad, they fall in love and Christmas is magical. It’s a similar format for many Hallmark or Lifetime Channel holiday movies. Someone always experiences a life-altering crisis, doubts the meaning of Christmas, but everyone always lives happily ever after. “The people of Weston were so helpful, so nice,” Sandra says. “All of the merchants decorated for Christmas, all voluntarily.” The Weston Firefly Inn, formerly the Weston Bed & Breakfast, was featured prominently as the Victorian home that was renovated during the movie. “One day someone knocked on the door and said, ‘Your home would be perfect for a movie,’ and that’s how it started,” says Dorothy Emery, who, along with her husband, Dick, were owners of the bed and breakfast at the time. “They were great to work with, put everything back the way it was,” says Dick Emery. “The only problem was getting rid of all of the plastic snow outside, but it was still fun.” Jerry Gross, who is the head of the Weston Film Commission, and his wife, Keira Jones, were in the process of purchasing the bed and breakfast. Both were among the many local extras in the movie. “Oh, it was hot for sure and here we were wearing scarves and winter coats,” says Jerry. One of the scenes Jerry and Keira were in was the Christmas store scene. “The air conditioner made too much noise, so they had to turn it off and we were just wiping the sweat off of us every minute the cameras were not rolling.”

More scenes were shot at the Weston Coffee Roastery and inside the high school wood shop, as well as all along Main Street. A common question Sandra receives is a legitimate one: Why don’t you shoot Christmas movies at Christmas when it’s not 100 degrees outside? The answer is simple and multi-faceted. The demand is high and Christmas lasts just a month or two at best. And filming in the winter months has its own challenges. Also, holiday movies are always in some sort of production. A writer is writing, location scouts are scouting, actors are auditioning. Production on a new season of movies must begin in late spring/early summer to make it to the networks in time for the holidays. Another Northland location that Sandra and her team chose was Excelsior Springs. Specifically, they were at the Christmas Ranch Tree Farm for “My Sweet Holiday” which debuted in 2020. A particular challenge for shooting Christmas movies in the summer is green. Green trees, green grass. “I loved that big red barn at the ranch because it covered up a lot of green,” laughed Sandra. Of course, the rows and rows of Christmas trees could be green, but by shooting at night with sparkling holiday lights strung everywhere and plastic snow, the other green disappeared. Your next destination for Hallmark Christmas movies is just a bit farther north in the Northland. Head up I-29 all the way to the Canadian border. Yes, you’ll need your passport for this getaway, but it will be worth it. Canada is a popular location for Hollywood productions of all types, in large part because of the numerous tax initiatives offered by our northern neighbors. The stronger U.S. dollar is also a contributing factor. And face it — Canada is just beautiful! Winnipeg, Manitoba is a particular favorite of the Hallmark Channel. Note, however, in Canada, the Hallmark Channel is known as the W Network. For some in the city, the holiday season is also known as the “spot that Winnipeg location in the Hallmark movie” season. The city’s Exchange District, a 20-square block National Historic Site, features cobblestone streets, distinct storefronts, interesting architecture, and plenty of independent businesses. Recent Hallmark movies shot there include “A Brush with Christmas,” “We Wish You a Married Christmas,” and “Hanukkah on Rye.” Those debuted in 2022 but will still run this holiday season. New from Winnipeg for 2023 include “Never Been Chris’d,” “The Santa Summit,” and “Holiday Hotline.” For a complete schedule of Hallmark movies this season, visit hallmarkchannel.com/christmas/ movie-guide-countdown-to-christmas-2023 A frequent set location in Winnipeg is the historic Fort Garry Hotel. A Canadian landmark since it opened in 1913, the Fort Garry is recognizable for towering windows and ceilings, a breathtaking lobby accented in gold and accessed by a curved grand staircase, and a ballroom with rich woodwork and gilded accessories. The front steps of the massive hotel also make a great shooting location. They’ve made about 20 Hallmark movies at the Fort Garry, but few employees and even fewer guests have seen a production in progress. “If they are using public spaces, like the lobby, they work throughout the night and everything is back to normal when most guests are out and about,” said Maria Cefali,

marketing director for the Fort Garry Hotel, Spa and Conference Center. The glamorous ballroom with its 23-foot-tall ceiling, chandeliers and velvet drapes is a common filming location. Guests never know anything interesting is happening behind closed doors. Visit the Fort Garry during the holidays and you’ll be wowed by an 18-foot-tall Christmas tree in the lobby, but that’s not the one you might see in Hallmark movies. “They bring their own decorations, set designer and crew, so we have very little to do with it,” Maria says. Three Hallmark movies that highlight the Fort Garry are “On the 12th Date of Christmas,” “Once Upon a Christmas Miracle” and “A Kiss Before Christmas.” The hotel’s new spa, a co-ed Turkish bath, is sure to make an appearance in an upcoming movie. The Fort Garry is an exciting place to stay for moviegoers, even if Hallmark Christmas movies are not your thing. Do we all love David Harbour who, among other roles, played Sheriff Hopper in “Stranger Things?” He spent weeks as a guest at the Fort Garry while shooting the 2022 action/comedy “Violent Night” in Winnipeg. Sophie Middleton has always been drawn to cooking. When she was only two years old, she woke up before her parents one morning, went downstairs to the kitchen, pulled out the toaster and attempted to make toast. Because she had the drive to cook but perhaps not the skills yet, she ended up burning the toast and waking her parents, who smelled the smoke downstairs. “I was trying to make breakfast for everyone,” Sophie concedes. Now 11, Sophie is still cooking for her family — but has gained plenty of skills and knowledge since she was a toddler. She now has a website and YouTube channel, Recipe Meets Curls, where she shares recipes for baked goods from her own kitchen. When she was only 8, Sophie launched the website with the help of her parents and cousin, building the website and even registering an LLC. There, she shares recipes at least twice a month, in between her busy school and dancing schedule. A recent favorite is the dessert popcorn she made for Halloween. Sophie has big aspirations for her skills in the kitchen. She’s a natural behind the camera, with plenty of personality, and hopes to someday be on the kids’ reality cooking competition show Kids Baking Championship on Food Network. She’s on her way, for sure, with three appearances on the local network KCTV5 where she’s shared her recipes. This holiday season, Sophie shares a few of her favorite cookie recipes with us to bake in our own kitchens. Bonus points if you share them with your little brothers, too. CONTINUED >

SNOW BALL COOKIES Similar to: Polvorones or Mexican Wedding cookies, Southern pecan cookies and Russian tea cookies INGREDIENTS • • • •
1 cup unsalted butter softened 1 ½ cup powdered sugar, divided ¼ teaspoon salt 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract or any extract flavoring you enjoy • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup finely chopped pecans or your choice of nut Special equipment needed: Electric mixer DIRECTIONS
SPRITZ H O L I D AY C O O K I E S INGREDIENTS • 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature • 3/4 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 large egg • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp almond extract • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour Special equipment needed: Cookie press, electric mixer DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Cream butter, salt, and sugar together in a stand mixer or with an electric whisk. Add the egg, almond extract, and vanilla until combined, then scrape down the bowl. 3. If adding dye to the dough you will want to mix the food coloring in now, then add the flour and mix until combined. 4. Fill your cookie press and choose a pattern then press cookies onto an ungreased baking sheet. No liner is needed. Tip: if you do not have a cookie press, you can use a piping bag to shape your cookies 5. You can decorate with sprinkles before or after baking. Bake at 350F for about 7-8 minutes or until the bottoms are just golden. Watch closely so as not to overbake.
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line onetwo baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat together the butter, ½ cup powdered sugar, and salt on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the vanilla until just combined. Tip: if you do not have a standing mixer, use a hand-held mixer for similar results 3. With the mixer on low, gradually add the flour, beating until well combined — be patient. Beat in the pecans until combined. Scoop the dough by tablespoonfuls and roll into balls between your palms. Place 1 inch apart on the baking sheets. You may consider gloves for rolling. This can get a bit messy! 4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until the tops are set and the bottoms are golden brown. Let the cookies cool on the pans for 5 minutes. 5. Pour the remaining 1 cup of powdered sugar in a medium bowl. Working 2-3 cookies at a time, roll the warm cookies in the sugar, shaking off excess. Place a wire rack, and cool completely for about 30 minutes. Reroll cooled cookies in confectioners’ sugar again. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. Tip: You may dust the powdered sugar on with a sifter if you choose not to roll them. CONTINUED >

With the use of “wine passports” (i.e., plastic cards that can be swiped like a credit card), you can try one, three or five-ounce pours from their 72-bottle selection and decide for yourself where the next taste will take you. “Consider this a self-led ‘wines of the world tour,’” sommelier Katie Hendley explains. As Sail Away’s sommelier, she hand-selects the shop’s impressive selection and has created a wine-tasting opportunity like none other in the area. “It’s like visiting local ports of call and experiencing local wine,” she explains. With the help of detailed wine notes above each selection, wine novices or connoisseurs alike can customize an experience to their personal palate. Passionate about providing a true wine experience, Katie encourages patrons to leave their worries at the door and really take in the wines’ taste and aromas. “It’s about the way that wine makes you feel,” she says. Because Sail Away Wine’s selection is curated from limited and small batches not readily available
everywhere, you can travel down the Rhine River in one pour and to the coast of California in the next before settling in Argentina to enjoy a bold Malbec. That’s the beauty of the wine passport. Sara Beane, media relations manager for Sail Away Wine, echoes the sentiment that there’s much more to an evening there than a glass of wine or two. “You can take a mini vacation without actually traveling,” she says. Owners Russ Johnson and Heather Brown love sailing and travel, so the shop’s name is a nod both to life at the helm and wine’s ability to sail patrons away to different parts of the world for a little escape. If the selection itself seems a bit overwhelming, they’ve helped with that, as well. By designating a new “destination” monthly, the team at Sail Away Wine selects wines from that part of the world, with a custom cocktail and food to match. To bring a bit of holiday cheer to patrons this month, they will be featuring the 12 Wines of Christmas, drawing inspiration from bottles' labels, stories and origins to create a customized list. To help with our holiday planning this year, Katie pairs some of the most popular holiday foods with the perfect wines. What a great way to try out holiday wine selections before investing in a bottle…. and an excuse to get away for the evening with friends in the name of “research.”

CHEERS TO CHARCUTERIE! Among the most popular of holiday parties, most of us will gather around a table full of meats, cheeses, fruit and sweet treats at some point this season. If you’re hosting one of these fun events, Katie says you can’t go wrong with the below: “It's always rosé season when it comes to charcuterie, and the holidays are no different," says Katie. "Dry rosé is versatile as a welcome wine all the way through the grazing stages of the occasion. "A light, easy red like pinot noir is great with the different flavors of meats and cheeses, which all bring fruit out in the wine in a different way. And, because the wine is lighter, it won't overwhelm the palate before the meal.”
KEEPING IT TRADITIONAL Imagine this – there is a turkey or ham in the oven, mashed potatoes are waiting to be drowned in gravy and you have made the green bean casserole that people either love or hate. When the candles are lit and the beautiful holiday table is set, Katie suggests that you consider adding one of these wines to the traditional holiday menu: “Gewurztraminer is a wonderful pairing," states Katie. "Its expressive and generous bouquet of honey, spice and exotic fruits is the perfect accent to your dinner, and it can be found in various levels of sweetness to best suit the tastes of your guests. There are also several price points, so you can find one that fits into your budget. "Cotes du Rhone is also an easy go-to pairing. This versatile, medium-bodied red is a blend, so it has the structure and flavor of several grape varietals. There are versions of Cotes du Rhone style blends made in other places than France as well, like California, South Africa and Australia. Most of these are budget-friendly wines, as well, so you can budget for a few bottles for the table.”
FONDUE FOLLIES There’s no such thing as too much cheese, right? Fondue sets might stay tucked away in the cabinet throughout the year, but they get a workout during the holiday season. Whether you’re planning a beer cheese recipe or simple fontina or Gruyère blend, those who “dip” will enjoy these “sips”: “Chardonnay has a lot of the buttery flavors of melty cheese, so it's a no-brainer pairing idea, but for something a bit different try a dry white wine from an alpine region, where fondue is eaten daily," says Katie.
SWEET & SALTY When the snow is falling and your family has an epic holiday movie lineup planned, the giant bowl of Chex mix and tray of chocolate-covered pretzels can qualify as a well-balanced dinner. You might want to have one of the below on hand for these evenings when cozying up with your spouse as the kids laugh along with Buddy the Elf makes for the perfect holiday evening. “Nothing better with salty, crunchy snacks like popcorn and Chex mix than sparkling wine," advises Katie. "Prosecco works well and is easy to find, but if you really want to treat yourself, you can always go with champagne.

"If you want to try this combo, go with a red wine with rich, fruity flavors and not too many dry tannins. Merlot can be a mellow enough option for this role. "For a winner every time, though, port is the answer. The variety of styles and ageability of this wine means you can always have some around the house in case of an emergency dessert party situation!”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
