I used to hate summer. In the Midwest, it’s hot, it’s humid, and going outside, at times, seems like torture. But since having kids, I actually look forward to summer. I look forward to days that smell like chlorine and dirt and sunscreen. The days where there’s sand on everything and you’re trying to get popsicle stains out of your kids’ clothes. Days filled with potato salad and sweaty ice-cold drinks and flip-flops. I love those days when you’re outside all day, eating soggy chips by the pool and you’re toast by 2 p.m. from being sunbaked, but you don’t care because it’s been the best day ever. We live for the long days that end with grilled meat and ice cream and lightning bugs — those summer adventure days. And that’s what this month’s magazine is all about! This month’s issue is filled with float trips and backyard camping and summer trips. We hope your summer is filled with some of the same — whether you set up your own tent or have Wonder & Whimsy set it up for you, preventing a fight between you and your partner that ends in zipping up the tent flap angrily. And if you don’t love summer yet, we hope some of the ideas in this magazine will get you leaning that way. If not, fall is just a handful of 100-degree days away — we hope.

Located about an hour east of Chicago, Indiana Dunes is 15 miles of sandy beaches on Lake Michigan, along with big monster-size sand dunes, marshy wetlands, forests, and historic sites. The ecological diversity stuffed into 15,000 acres is what makes this worthy of national park status. So that’s why, in 1966, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was created — to protect that ecological diversity, as well as some of the history and recreational opportunities this region represents. But before that, in 1925, the state of Indiana created Indiana Dunes State Park on some of the most beautiful areas of sandy beaches. A state park and a national park by the same name in exactly the same place with different guidelines and procedures – that’s sure not to confuse anyone. Indeed, the state park is right smack in the middle of the national park. In 1966 when the Department of Interior decided that this area was worthy of federal protection, homes, businesses, and industry had grown up all along Lake Michigan’s southern shores. Decades ago, people realized what a fabulous destination this is and built their homes as close to Lake Michigan as possible. So, to access parts of the park, you’ll be driving in and out of several small municipalities and neighborhoods.
WHAT TO DO AT INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK Most visitors to this area are naturally drawn to Lake Michigan’s shore, especially in the heat of the summer. Who can blame them, right? It’s like an ocean in the middle of the Midwest. But the combination of forests, marshes and prairie in the condensed space is what earned the area admission into the coveted national park club. A perfect hike to see it all is along the Miller Woods Trail. In three miles, you pass through wetland, a black oak savanna, through the dunes and onto the beach. And, if you don’t want to hike back to your vehicle at the Paul Douglass Visitors Center, you can hitch a ride on the park shuttle at the beach. The beach here, by the way, is operated by the city of Marquette, not the national park. Another little confusing thing. Also, hike an easy mile to the Bailly/Chellberg farmstead. This started out as a fur trading post in the 1820s and developed into a full-fledged farm. In September, the Park Service hosts an Apple Festival at the Chellberg Farm.
KEEP OFF THE DUNES The National Park Service is very serious about not allowing you to climb the sand dunes. They are a fragile ecosystem, so when you see a sign that says “Keep Off Dunes,” then keep off the dunes. But there are a few places where you can climb the dunes and a few special times you get to climb THE Dune. The Miller Woods Trail is one place visitors are allowed to climb the dunes. There are other places, like Porter Beach, where

the park service builds stairs that allow you to ascend the dunes and have a look around without doing any damage to the landscape. Mount Baldy is the highest dune at Indiana Dunes National Park and very fragile. No one knows exactly how tall it is because the sands move and shift, but it’s somewhere around 200 feet tall. If you want to climb it, make plans to visit on a Sunday afternoon. For three hours on Sundays, the park service opens the Mount Baldy Trail to let the public give it a try. It’s not as easy as it looks. For each step you take up, you slide back down about a half step. But the view from the top is spectacular and the cool breeze from Lake Michigan makes it worth the effort.

WHERE TO EAT AND SLEEP AT INDIANA DUNES Unfortunately, there are no food vendors at Indiana Dunes. You’ll find lots of locally owned places around the park. Check out The Goblin and the Grocer on Highway 12 in Beverly Shores. It’s part grocery store, so you can buy sandwiches and treats for a picnic in the park. There’s a campground just behind The Goblin. Otherwise, your choices include Airbnb or small hotels. For something different, check out Riley’s Railhouse in Chesterton, IN. Are you dying to hit the water this summer? Maybe you’re looking for an adventure beyond the local pool. Grab a kayak, canoe, or raft, your favorite beverage, and sunscreen because Missouri is full of high-quality floating opportunities for all sorts of adventurers.

OZARK STREAM — MIGHTY MUDDY CHALLENGE? Missouri’s rivers are as diverse as its landscapes, and you’ll be spoiled for variety. Paddle underneath the chalk-white bluffs of the Missouri river in the competitive endurance race, the MR340. Or, if you’re looking for a more secluded locale, you can head south into the Ozarks and explore the crystal-clear smallmouth streams. Looking to keep it local? There are plenty of local rivers that you can launch into in the Kansas City area.
WHAT SHOULD I PREPARE FOR? One of the first things to ask before floating is if you’re looking for a DIY adventure or a float trip with shuttles and renting options. If you’re bringing your own kayak or canoe, make sure you bring life jackets, a wet bag for valuables, and plenty of water. It’s a good idea to know what the roads are like at the launch and take-out spots. Some areas, particularly in more remote rivers, can have roads that require 4x4 vehicles for access. If the river access is managed by a state or federal agency, call their local office and ask about the area for more information. If you plan on fishing, visit the Missouri Department of Conservation’s website to purchase a license and check on all local regulations. Be clear about your expectations before you choose a spot. If you’re looking for an easy-going float, you may want to consider a smaller stream or even paddling on the feeder river of one of our large reservoirs. A raft or kayak is much more
beginner-friendly than canoes and can help you avoid dumping your gear into the water if someone rocks the boat too hard! Similarly, if you want to fish, avoid the popular floating streams, particularly in summer, or plan to get up early and stay out late. There’s nothing worse than trying to guide a hook through a congested riverway. In general, bringing your own gear, going midweek, and floating places with less access can be a great way to get a more secluded experience.
OZARK STREAMS AND RIVERS The Ozark region of Missouri is famed for its gorgeous rivers, tall bluffs, and great smallmouth fishing. There are tons of small rivers to choose from, as well as access points through private businesses, Missouri Department of Conservation launches, Missouri State Park land, and more. Many of these smaller rivers get significant traffic during the summer months, so book ahead of time. You might consider Jack’s Fork, the Current River, the Niangua River, the Little Niangua, or even lower sections of Lake Taneycomo.
THE MISSOURI RIVER The Missouri River might not be your first thought when it comes to a float trip, but in the dog days of summer, the Big Muddy can be a surprisingly tame river to navigate. Kayak rentals are available in Kansas City with shuttle servicesThe river is steeped in history and can offer plenty of bank access to experience wildlife if you’re into bird watching, fishing or mushroom hunting. Just look out for barges!

Also, if you’re a hardcore paddler or looking for a challenge, you can enter the MR340, a grueling 340-mile paddle race that stretches from KC all the way down to St. Charles. It’s a great way to have a big river experience and push yourself outside of your comfort zone.
OTHER KANSAS CITY LOCALES The Blue River in southern Kansas City is a great option for floating as well, particularly for kayaks. In the summer months, the river is relatively shallow, and you may need to walk your vessel through riffles or take a break on a gravel bar. You’ll be amazed at the variety of wildlife that makes Kansas City’s iconic Blue River Parkway home. Gar, bass, wild turkey, migratory birds, colorful wild mushrooms, and more call the Blue River home and if you want to make a day of it, you can paddle the entire stretch, through the industrial district and out into the Missouri River. The Platte River is also a very accessible option. Platte Falls Conservation Area offers a portion that is connected by two boat ramps for easy take in and out. Bring your catfish rods and plenty of sunscreen. This stretch of the river is surrounded by conservation land, so you’ll be able to experience what our small rivers were meant to feel like without having to drive five or six hours to the southern part of the state. For an extended float, you can put in at the boat ramp at Interurban Road and float downstream to one of the ramps off Knighton Road.
RESERVOIRS Don’t neglect reservoirs as a floating option! Many of the Kansas City area reservoirs offer kayak and canoe rental and have floatable feeder streams. Floating on a lake can also be a much less intimidating option than a river. The only caveat is that on weekends, you may deal with more boat traffic than rivers. Lake Jacomo, Smithville Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, and many other large reservoirs in Missouri have kayak and boat rentals available through State Parks, their respective county parks and recreation, or through private outfitters.

While folks who live in Kansas City know how amazing Kansas City is, people who have never been here don’t always get it. Kansas City might be great, but for outsiders, it can have connotations of cows, flyover country, and temperamental Midwestern weather. So when Kansas Citians find out someone uprooted their entire family and specifically picked Kansas City over other places to live (especially when they don’t have relatives in the area), the initial question is often, “Why?” But that’s just what Tim Sanders, owner of Solar Shield, and his family did. He’s a transplant from Peoria, Illinois, where he was born and raised, and he handpicked the Kansas City
area to move his business and his family because he fell in love with the city. And he might just be one of Kansas City’s biggest cheerleaders now. Tim started working for his wife’s family’s window covering business in high school, and after learning the installation side of the business, he started his own window covering business, Solar Shield, in 2016. Solar Shield works with anything that goes on a window or needs a solution from the sun — curtains, blinds, shades, shutters, you name it. He built his Peoria company to the point where he had curated such a great group of employees that he knew he could hand the reins over to them and expand the business to a different market, and started searching for the perfect place to move his family. And at the top of his list? Well, initially, it was Florida. But after a lot of research and talking to friends, it just didn’t feel like a good fit. “We kind of took a pause from Florida and we started researching other markets,” says Tim. “Somewhere in our conversation, Kansas City popped up.” So, instead of going somewhere warm in April of 2018, they decided to take a trip to Kansas City, landing at KCI while there was still snow on the ground. They rented an Airbnb for a week and explored the whole city, from Raytown to Overland Park. But the weather warmed during their visit and as the weather warmed, the Sanders family did, too. “Everybody was super friendly,” says Tim. “We kept running into everyone — people would stop and talk to us. People seemed to be a little more upbeat and a little happier than where we were in Illinois. It still felt very Midwestern so we weren’t going to lose our winters or anything like that. A lot of people started trying to help us with our business. It was amazing.” By the end of the week, the Sanders were sold on Kansas City. They made the decision on the patio of Jack Stack, on one of those perfect days you get at the end of winter when spring finally starts to show — Kansas City would be their new home. They started the move almost

immediately after returning back to Illinois, buying a home in the Liberty North school district in a new construction neighborhood. “We found friends almost immediately, it was great,” says Tim. “[It] definitely helped with the transition. On our neighborhood Facebook page, I made an announcement of who we were and got a huge response from people mentioning [our business] to friends. Since that point, that has continued to be the case. It took him less than three years to reach that goal, and they now have over 300 5-star reviews. “We get Google reviews almost on a daily basis at this point,” says Tim. “So that’s been a really big testament to how good of a market Kansas City is and our experience setting up shop here — people’s willingness to help us through our business.” Solar Shield will have called Kansas City home for four years this month, and they have the friendliness and helpfulness of Kansas Citians to thank them for that. “We’ve got a very young, professional, motivated team that’s really excited about helping people,” says Tim. “Everybody [our customers] deal with, from our office staff, to whoever comes out to their house to the installer is excited to help them. While a getaway is often welcome, sometimes staycations can feel just as nice — and why stop there? Wonder & Whimsy is an event rental company in Kansas City, run by Parkville native Sara Garris. On top of her glamorous tablescapes and luxurious lounge set-ups, she specializes in tent rentals. Wonder & Whimsy offers large teepees or little bell tents, and they’ve been used for a whole range of things — bachelorette parties, engagement proposals, baby showers, birthday parties and yes, even camping. We sat down with Sara to brainstorm some party ideas for whatever special occasion you might have planned this summer — or, heck, even an ordinary but elevated night in.
