This month is our gentlemen’s issue, and my life seems all about boys these days — my boys. I’m the mother of two sons, and their childhood looks a little different from my own since I grew up as one of three girls. It’s a little dirtier, for example, and there are a lot more bugs, Legos, and dinosaurs. I’m constantly trying to guide my boys’ ever-increasing risk tolerance levels. Raising sons has me often reflecting on what makes a good man. To me, that’s someone who is honorable, provides security and comfort, has great respect for others, and is strong — not just strong of body, but has strong character, mind, and values. I hope that my boys will go into the world with these attributes once they are men. We have a few gentlemen in our magazine this month who garner great respect for the things they’ve created. Our cover story is about the Holladay Distillery and their latest creation by master distiller Kyle Merklein, who developed a bourbon that honors the distillery’s past by recreating the original bourbon of another man. Ben Holladay, the namesake of the bourbon, is a figure that history has forgotten but shaped our community in many ways. We also profile furniture maker Matt Castilleja, who I’ve followed for some time, in awe of his beautiful vision and craftsmanship. Our travel writer Diana Lambdin Meyer also brings us another story from her journeys, this time in Galveston. As usual with her pieces, they’re historically inspired, as Galveston is the birthplace of our new national holiday, Juneteenth. And lastly, we talk to realtor Candi Sweeney to take a peek into some of the Northland’s most luxurious homes, some of which she’s been honored to represent. This month, I hope our magazine helps you reflect on the great men in your life and just what about them makes them so great. I have many wonderful men in my life – my husband, my father, and my boys — and, for that, I’m grateful.

HOLLADAY DISTILLERY HONORS LOCAL AND PERSONAL HISTORY WITH ITS BEN HOLLADAY BOURBON
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE CURRID

LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
One question has plagued master distiller Kyle Merklein for the last six years — “Is the bourbon ready yet?” But, indeed, the bourbon is now ready — Holladay Distillery’s Ben Holladay Missouri Straight Bourbon Whiskey. After six years, Holladay is finally making bourbon again, 126 years after Ben Holladay himself made the first batch on the property and over 35 years since bourbon was made there last. This is Kyle’s first bourbon release, and he’s had a lot of sleepless nights the last few years over it — worrying about every detail of the process to get the bourbon out of the barrel and into the bottle. “Each new step — thinking through it and then losing sleep over it and then actually getting through it and making it through perfectly fine and I didn’t have to lose sleep – it’s just part of it,” says Kyle. “You wait for six years — there’s so much pressure.” With a background in engineering from Kansas State, Kyle never intended to be the spokesperson for a bottle of bourbon. While he currently lives in nearby Atchison, his wife’s hometown, Kyle is from Phillipsburg, Kansas, a historic German town. He actually grew up with a German accent, which was picked up from his grandparents, who spoke German. He worked hard to hide his accent, admitting he has always felt a little self-conscious about public
speaking because of that. It’s clear he shies away from the limelight, but it’s an endearing quality. “You don’t expect to be posted by a brand on social media when you’re in engineering school, says Kyle. “[But] it’s tall good and it’s part of the game and it’s fun.” While Kyle helped lead the modern Ben Holladay Bourbon to bottle, the journey to the release has had many hands in it over the distillery’s history. The original owner, Ben Holladay, purchased the land in 1849, knowing from his upbringing in Kentucky that the limestone spring on the property would be optimal for bourbon. The new Ben Holladay Bourbon actually uses the original mash bill, or recipe, from the first bourbon that was made here under the name Blue Springs Distillery. “We’ve distilled to the same proofs that we used to, we use the same mash bill, we use a very similar cooking style — pretty much recreating as much as we possibly could because we knew it was a good product,” says Kyle. “We have a dwindling reserve of bottles from 30+ years ago and the goal I think has always been to hit that target profile and to recreate the bourbon as close as we possibly could.” While the mash bill is the same as it was in the 19th century, the technology, of course, has changed even since the last bourbon was bottled on this site in the

1980s. Having access to newer technology gives Kyle an immense appreciation for those who made it before him. “We have so much more technology today than there was 30, 40, 50, 150 years ago,” says Kyle. “All the tools that I’m using pretty much didn’t exist. You really have perspective on how everything in the bourbon world was even done to begin with, even just the steps of bottling it.” That’s the most important aspect to Kyle — honoring history without messing too much with a recipe that has stood the test of time. Holladay’s bourbon will be bottled in bond, meaning every step of the bourbon process — the cooking, distillation, and aging — all happened at the same facility and is all the product of a single distillation season. “Every step that we do is respecting bourbon history, bourbon heritage, as well as our own history and our own heritage,” says Kyle. “And that’s huge. If you just think back on the history of our facility alone, there’s a lot of people making bourbon here and we just want to respect that process.” Ben Holladay Bourbon will be made in small batches. Because each release will be the product of a different distillation season, there may be variability from batch to batch. Each bottle will list the blend of what floor the barrel was stored in the rickhouse (a warehouse for whiskey barrels). Holladay is embracing this variability — like a
winemaker embraces a vintage — and hopes its bourbon drinkers will do the same. Of course, Kyle is a bourbon drinker himself — surely, a prerequisite for the job of master distiller. “I have probably too many types of bourbon in my house,” says Kyle. “My wife has always asked me if I really need that bottle or not. Thankfully, I guess it’s paid off.” Kyle will soon have his own bourbon to add to his bar shelf. It seems to have paid off, indeed.
“EVERY STEP THAT WE DO IS RESPECTING BOURBON HISTORY, BOURBON HERITAGE, AS WELL AS OUR OWN HISTORY AND OUR OWN HERITAGE.”

Heartland Honed FURNITURE MAKER MATT CASTILLEJA MARRIES TRADITIONAL SKILLS AND CONTEMPORARY STYLE IN HIS WEST BOTTOMS SHOP ARTICLE BY KATIE CURRID PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY ELWELL
Looking at Matt Castilleja’s contemporary furniture, some find it hard to believe that he is from the Midwest. Matt recounts a time when he was at a showcase in New York City and a man approached him. “He was like, ‘I saw you standing there, but I just didn’t know if you’d speak English or not because I look and I see the work, I see the name — I figured you’d be a vendor from like Spain or Italy or somewhere,’” recalls Matt. “And I was like, ‘Nope, I’m from Kansas City.’ And he was like, ‘No you’re not, I’m from Kansas City and this doesn’t come from Kansas City.’ He’s one of our best clients now.” Matt Castilleja, the owner of Castilleja Furniture + Objects, is a furniture maker. He describes his work as classic contemporary, with clean, architectural lines but traditional joinery and materials — “A contemporary design philosophy but it’s still rooted in the past,” he says. And it makes sense that some might think his work was more European, instead of made by someone from Kansas City. He has a traditional background in woodworking, learning his skillset in the same
shop where his current business resides in the West Bottoms. But his business was kickstarted after taking a European trip when he turned 30, traveling through Paris, London, Austria, and Italy. “After seeing that, I was like, ‘I could do that,’” says Matt about his European trip. “[It] gave me the guts to just go for it because I saw their shop. They had the same tools and they were doing it with less space and I was like, ‘You know what, I’m going to do this and I’m just gonna make this happen.’” While European artisans are often revered for their craftsmanship, Matt had the epiphany on his trip that there was really nothing different about makers in Europe when it came to tools and resources. “It made me really realize that they were people too — they're making things with their hands,” says Matt. “There’s no reason why someone producing something in Milan or Paris — they’re no better than we are. There’s no reason why we can’t produce something like that here that’s of high quality and could be on the same world stage, basically. That was really the point that really inspired me to do that show in New York.”

23
After returning back to Kansas City from Europe, inspired by all the craftsmanship he saw during his time there, Matt set to work and applied for a high-profile furniture show in New York, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. He was accepted to the show and decided to go for it — a large investment for his fledgling business at the time. He drove his furniture from Kansas City to New York City in an old van with a lopsided wheel. Matt’s decision to do the New York show was a huge turning point in his business, which took off after that. Since then, his work has been published in Elle Decor Magazine and Architectural Digest. One of his pieces is on the 92nd floor in a residential tower in New York City that overlooks Central Park, placed right in front of an 8 million dollar Basquiat painting. But while most of his work ends up on the coasts and has a European influence, he also knows he couldn’t have launched his business if it wasn’t for his start in the Midwest. “It’s a good place to work — to kind of produce work in — because there’s so much opportunity to grow,” says Matt of the Midwest. “It’s kind of an incubator of sorts for a lot of different industries.” While it can be easy to assume the Midwest is flyover country for creativity (though those of us who live here know it’s not), Matt appreciates it as a foundation for his craftsmanship, which he adds to with inspiration from afar. “Once you start traveling and seeing the world, that adds to that experience,” says Matt about growing up in Kansas City. “I’m about finding the best quality materials and these ideas just kind of add to that palette and taking elements from the things you see. It makes me appreciate the Midwest a bit more — the more you travel, you start appreciating more of what you have and not taking it for granted so much.” Since launching his business in 2015, Matt has gone from producing custom pieces to creating a signature line of furniture. His work is currently featured in showrooms from San Francisco to Chicago to Atlanta, such as Una Malan and CKS Collective. You can see more of his work at mattcastilleja.com.

BIRTHPLACE E H OF T
CELEBRATE OUR NEW NATIONAL HOLIDAY IN THE PLACE WHERE IT ALL STARTED — GALVESTON
JUNETEENTH
ARTICLE BY DIANA LAMBDIN-MEYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY VISIT GALVESTON

M UST SE E | TR AVEL
For many Americans, the addition of Juneteenth as a national holiday last year became an opportunity to learn another layer of our country’s diverse history. To really appreciate the holiday, visit Galveston, Texas – the birthplace of Juneteenth. Just an hour south of Houston on I-45, Galveston is both an island and a city. The island is 27 miles long and up to three miles wide in places. And the beaches are magnificent. The city, known for its extensive plantings of oleander and an enthusiastic celebration of Mardi Gras, has a population of about 50,000. It was here in June 1865 that General Gordon Granger and 25,000 Union troops arrived from New Orleans. On June 19th, at the corner of 22nd and the Strand, he issued Executive Order No. 3 informing the people of Texas that all enslaved people of the Lone Star State were now free. It was nearly three years after Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the Civil War had ended. It was the last state in which freedom and “absolute equality” were declared for enslaved people. “The Black people on the island chose this date as their freedom date and celebrated it annually for generations,” said Samuel Collins, III, a historian and certified tourism ambassador for Galveston. “As they moved off the island and around the country, they took Juneteenth celebrations with them.” Today on the spot where General Granger issued the order is a massive mural — 126 ft long and 38 ft tall — called “Absolute Equality.” Hold your iPhone up to one of the six rings in the mural to activate a video that details each period or person depicted there. Step inside the building, home to the Juneteenth Legacy Project and Nia Cultural Center. “Nia” means “purpose” in Swahili. The center includes a thought-provoking exhibit by Houston artist Ted Ellis that documents the African American journey to freedom in Texas. Pick up a brochure for the tour, “Galveston Freedom Walk,” that highlights five stops significant to the Juneteenth experience in Galveston. Learn more at Juneteenthbirthplace.org. While Juneteenth is significant to the Galveston experience, the city has much more to offer in history, culture, food, and overall good times. This is an island, so the Gulf of Mexico lords over every aspect of life here.

The Galveston Sea Wall is 10 miles long and 17 feet high, doing its best to separate the people and places of Galveston from the water beyond. It came about after a hurricane in 1900 that killed 6,000 people and nearly wiped the island off the map. In a masterful feat of civil engineering, they simply raised the island about 10 feet, thus minimizing impact from future storms. The result is a 10-mile-long sidewalk with the Gulf of Mexico and beaches on one side and a huge selection of amazing restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues on the other. Pleasure Pier has a Ferris wheel and other carnival-type rides that spin you out over the water until you want to scream. Make sure you plan a meal, or at least dessert, at Gaido’s. It’s been here since 1911 and has absolutely the biggest and best pecan pie you’ll ever eat in your life. Plan on breakfast one morning at the Star Drug Store. It’s been here since 1909 and besides a good omelet, it’s just a funky place to hang out. Look for the high water mark on the back wall from Hurricane Ida.

At one point, Galveston was the largest immigration point in the U.S., just behind Ellis Island. It’s a fascinating story told in the new Ship to Shore Museum, where you become a passenger on a ship hoping to enter the U.S. Whether you become a U.S. citizen or not depends on so many factors completely out of your control. The Galveston Railroad Museum includes the largest collection of railroad china in the country. Another train car is a bed and breakfast, so you can spend the night without going anywhere. There are so many great places you can choose to spend the night in Galveston. The Grand Galvez is one of those historic, classic hotels and is right on the water. But if you want to stay downtown, check out the Tremont House. It, too, is a historic hotel that some say is haunted. But it has a spectacular rooftop bar. If flying, choose flights into Houston Hobby. It’s much closer to Galveston. If driving, it’s about 13 hours from Kansas City. For more information, visit visitgalveston.com

INTEREST IN LUXURY HOMES HAS INCREASED SINCE THE PANDEMIC — HERE’S A LOOK INSIDE A FEW THAT SOLD IN THE NORTHLAND The pandemic has increased interest in homes over a million dollars around the country, specifically in the Northland, as buyers from across the country and locally found the area a perfect place to work remotely but also a short drive from the new KCI airport. Candi Sweeney, real estate agent with Wolfe~Sweeney & Courtney, says buyers were looking for locations where they could vacation at home, homeschool their children, and have both parents working remotely. She says golf course and lake

properties, along with homes having inground pools, were a hot commodity, many disappearing overnight. According to Candi, Heartland MLS showed that before the pandemic, only 8 homes sold for over $1 million in the area. "Since the shutdown of the U.S. economy in March 2020, 82 homes over $1,000,000 have sold or are under contract,” says Candi. “That is a dramatic difference as the market continues to have low inventory for homes in every price range.”

Here are just a few notable homes that have sold for over a million dollars in the Northland since the onset of the pandemic — and one that’s still for sale.
13419 33 HIGHWAY, KEARNEY Sold for $1,325,000 Acreage properties also became highly sought after for a location to escape to and be able to work anywhere. This 32-acre property in Kearney is gated with two ponds and features a paved driveway to this fabulous estate home. The outdoor kitchen, koi pond, and living space are peaceful and serene.
10000 NW 75TH STREET, WEATHERBY LAKE Sold for $3,000,000 Many are familiar with the Castle on Weatherby Lake built by Lance and Laura Welch. Attention to detail was important to the Welchs and building a magnificent home on the lake brought a lot of attention to this body of water. This incredible landmark was marketed by Sotheby's and sold in 2021. Many lakefront homes around the lake have been torn down with sensational structures taking their place. "The castle is a very special property and it was a thrill to represent the buyers on this purchase. They have big plans to make it their own!" says Candi.
6522 Turnberry Court, Parkville
6522 TURNBERRY COURT, PARKVILLE Under contract for $1,689,000 The National Golf Club of Kansas City skyrocketed with home sales. With two beautiful golf courses, a pool, tennis court, and pickleball courts, this location gave families a place to "vacation at home" since the shutdown. Many homes have sold with new construction finishing out all the remaining homesites. There are currently four beautiful Estate homes being marketed by Wolfe~Sweeney & Courtney, like this 7300 sq. ft. home on Turnberry Court built by Koehler Construction. This home features an infinity pool and sweeping views of forest and valley off the back deck. "The National has always been the premier Golf Course in the Northland," says Russ Wolfe, who has sold at The National for over 23 years.
6537 RIDGE ROAD, PARKVILLE Under Contract for $1,695,000 Tom McDonough was the architect for this home at The National, built by Distinctive Homes. The contemporary style and fabulous golf front location made this home in demand, going under contract quickly. Almost every single one of the living spaces has a view of the golf course, including the back patio, which offers a view of 6 different golf holes.
