Jeron Traphagan | jeron.traphagan@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

A perfect marriage of comfort and style MY FRIEND OWNS A GREETING CARD BUSINESS, AND A FEW YEARS AGO SHE MADE A KEYCHAIN WITH THE SLOGAN, “HOME IS WHERE THE SOFT PANTS ARE.” That might as well have been 2020’s slogan. Home was everywhere and the soft pants were, too.

I don’t know about you, but as much as I loved wearing loungewear last year, I really missed dressing up. I remember trying to find a nice dress for family photos and it was like anything fashionable had been replaced sweatpants in stores. Give me a good yoga pant any day, but I also live for an occasion. I learned a lot about myself in 2020, and one thing was the purge of things that didn’t serve me — like uncomfortable clothing. I’m excited to take that pared-down knowledge, creating the perfect marriage of comfort and style — for me, that’s often an elastic waist and some funky earrings. I’m not sorry about it. So, let’s get back to style — and not just style within our four walls, but a style that others can see in person, not just reflected on a screen from a social media account. We’ve got four stories this month that epitomize style in all areas of life. Our cover story is about four local boutique owners with very different styles telling us about the business lessons they’ve learned and what they’re looking forward to. We’re

after being in her house, you’re going to want to get right on that. Writer Nyonu Branch-Watkins does a deep dive into Bittersweet Soap & Apothecary, describing scents in a way that felt like I was there, and now I know exactly where I’ll be headed for some fall scents. And Salon Halo gives us all the details on hair extensions, and they’re way different than I could’ve ever imagined.

With all things at this moment, we’re trying to carry over the good — the lessons we took away from the last year after so much introspection — and trying to pair it now with what seems more complete, whole and right. While that might seem like a big ask of style, it’s the beautiful and luxurious things in our lives that can sometimes bring us out of the dark days and help move us back towards gratitude.

WEATHERBY LAKE, YOU’D NEVER THINK THEIR FAMILY OF FIVE HAD ONLY LIVED HERE FOR TWO YEARS. The house, with its tall ceilings, expansive archways, built-in bars, welcoming fireplaces and huge windows with natural light, looks like it was built just the way it is now, with every room the peak of comfort and functionality, but also ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KATIE CURRID

super stylish. But it didn’t always look this way. Shauna and her husband, Ryan, purchased the home with its original 90s-era oak trim and cabinets, and after a contractor quit on them mid-reno — while they were living in a family member’s basement with two tweens and a brand new baby — Shauna stepped in, rescued the renovation and found her calling along the way. She’s now a home renovation consultant, specializing in design and project management with her business, Shauna Ward Interiors.

16

Northland Lifestyle | September 2021

Shauna’s personal style is like grown-up fun — funky-colored cabinets, lots of texture and splashes of color, but with elevated design details, like curated and thoughtful lighting and carefully considered storage details, like their enviable mudroom and its row of tall cabinets. It’s a little boho, but you just can’t say no to plants with natural light in a house like this, and Shauna can’t say no to a good rug, either (but should anyone?). While her style is distinct, Shauna can adapt her design needs to any client’s taste, while still doing what she does best: bringing those attentive touches to make any space the peak of functionality and comfort, while also managing contractors. “My goal is to make your dream house your dream house, not mine,” she says.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)

Shauna’s home is kid-friendly without all the plastic stuff, adapting to the wide range of ages of their children — Alexa, 12, Jenna, 9 and Rhett, 2. After taking over her home renovation, Shauna realized she loved this type of work and decided to leave her old career, even though she was in her 40s. Though she says it’s a “late-in-life” transition, Shauna says she couldn’t have done this when her kids were younger, as a single mom who needed a traditional career with health insurance. Now, with more knowledge and stability, she’s proud to own her own business — one with flexible hours that can allow her the ability to be her own boss and be with her kids, a balance that any parent knows is hard to strike. 18

Northland Lifestyle | September 2021

“It’s good for them to see that you can do this for yourself,” she says of her children. It’s clear that Shauna loves a good project and doesn’t shy away from a challenge. It’s obvious she can whip any project into shape, while also lending her keen eye for mixing textures and patterns and making a house a home.

A RETURN TO FASHION LAST YEAR PUT A LOT ON PAUSE, BUT ONE OF THEM WAS DEFINITELY FASHION. Instead of shopping for special occasions, we were trying to figure out if our day required pants. As a result of being at home for most of the year, fun fashions were replaced with comfort and function. This year, we’re excited to take the lessons we learned last year — that cotton is king and that soft pants never lose their appeal — and dress them up as we return to the world. We talked to 4 local boutique owners about what they’re most excited about and their takeaways looking back.

JILL MARIE BOUTIQUE

8640 N Dixson Ave, Kansas City, MO 64153

A boutique in Zona Rosa for the ultimate “cool

mom,” Jill Marie sells both kid’s clothing and activewear, such as sports bras and leggings, from owner Sydni Russell’s in-house label. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT WITH FALL FASHIONS? I am most excited about jackets. With jackets, you can dress up or dress down and that one piece can drive the whole outfit. Jackets can be a true statement piece or help complete the look. DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. I would describe my personal style as chill-chic. My go-to is always loungewear because it’s comfortable and you can look fly without doing a lot

and still being comfortable. Also, for me, I like to be able to move around easily and chase after my kids if need be because they are busy. However, sometimes I do have the fashion urge to do a “show-stopping” look when necessary or an event comes up and I feel like your aura and attitude can truly change when you really dress up and step out of your fashion “box”. PINK DINOSAUR

PINK DINOSAUR

7102 NW 86th Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64153 While this Zona Rosa shop sells looks for head to toe, owner Elle Steadman’s pride and joy is their Pink Dinosaur t-shirts. The tees are made under fair trade practices in Haiti and printed locally by GOEX Apparel, a company that emphasizes fair wages. HOW DID YOUR PERSONAL STYLE CHANGE IN THE LAST YEAR? I would say I wore more t-shirts and sweatshirts than ever! I design every t-shirt and sweatshirt in our boutique so I obviously love them and want to wear them every day. Plus, they are so soft and are ethically made. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR BUSINESS? I have a few favorites! One of my favorite parts about my business is that I have been able to give back to our community. I have donated to a lot of local charities and made

a real difference in people’s lives. Another favorite part is that I have created a lot of jobs! We have hired people who lost their jobs because of the pandemic. The charity who produces our tees has hired more employees because of the number of orders from Pink Dinosaur. Seeing firsthand how my little business has made a big change in real life is amazing. Lastly, my favorite part is connecting with so many other female-owned small business owners. Wow, there are so many talented women out there. I love how everyone has something that makes them special. Being able to promote them, share their business with others and have them pop up in my boutique is so much fun. 24

CACTUS CREEK

Once we reopened, business took off as people were

itching to get out of the house — a day trip to Weston was the perfect getaway location.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE PANDEMIC HAD AN EFFECT ON FASHION?

The transition in how people work — with so many

going from traditional workplaces to home offices — has been the biggest change I have seen. Casual Cactus Creek photos by Sarah Bailey of Dandelions & Dumptrucks

comfort is far more important now than ever before. WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

We are spending the next 12 months focusing on

our website making it easy to shop for customers

across the United States. We are also working on expanding our Fancy’s Favorites club which is a VIP club that offers 20% OFF to all of our customers, and also has a way to give back to our community.

CACTUS CREEK 400 Main St, Weston, MO 64098 Cactus Creek, owned by Fancy Smith, is a funky boutique in Weston that mixes the boho and Southwestern aesthetic. They sell clothing, antiques and home goods, and even have a bar in the basement. HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS CHANGE LAST YEAR? August marked 21 years in business for Cactus Creek. What started as a little import business in a barn behind our house in Lenexa has now become a thriving boutique in downtown Weston. The year 2020 was a huge turnaround for us. During the 12 weeks that we were closed our entire shop got a facelift. Every inch of every wall was painted, the old wooden floors were redone, and new dressing rooms & counters were built.

URBAN TRENDS

6264 Lewis St, Parkville, MO 64152 This Parkville clothing store run by Jamie Duncan sells on-trend clothing with effortless style in a relaxed and fun environment. HOW DO YOU THINK THE PANDEMIC HAD AN EFFECT ON FASHION? We’re definitely seeing more relaxed styles, jogger sets, sneakers, more cute tops for Zoom calls, ha! WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT WITH FALL FASHIONS? Cozy sweaters, layers, plaid shackets [shirt jackets], and cute boots!

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. A great pair of jeans, graphic tee and sneakers for daytime, then take that same outfit and add kitten heels and a blazer for a night out. I love to take basic pieces and have fun with the accessories.

Jill has been dreaming up her line of fall and winter aromas since mid-summer. Her manufacturing process requires four to six weeks of preparation and development, a proceeding she embarks on with infectious enthusiasm. “You know, as a soap maker, I could make the same scents all the time,” she says. “The reason I don’t is for selfish reasons. When I go into the studio to make a soap, I’m like, ‘Oh, I get to make this soap today and this is going to smell amazing.’ There’s no set routine. I’m very, very lucky”. It’s easy to understand why she refers to her shop as her “second home” and revels in being a great hostess. “It’s kind of like people are coming into my home, especially because the shop is in an old home, and I think that’s cool,” says Jill. “This is definitely like my second home so I feel like it’s a privilege that people feel comfortable the moment they walk through that door.”

SALON HALO ANSWERS ANY QUESTION YOU MIGHT HAVE ABOUT HAIR EXTENSIONS

34

Northland Lifestyle | September 2021

LAST YEAR, MY SISTER SAVED FOR WEEKS FOR HAIR EXTENSIONS. She made the appointment to get them and was obsessed with the look — she’s always had pretty hair, but with her extensions, she had the best braids and her hair was so thick and luscious. Then, the pandemic hit, and everything locked down. “Well, I guess I’ll just have really cute hair on my couch, then,” I remember her saying. But even if no one else could see them, she loved her long hair. I’d never considered hair extensions, but after my sister had them installed, I had so many questions (especially now that they would be seen by more than my couch!). So when I got the chance to talk to Tiffany Ponick, owner of Salon Halo and co-owner of KC Hair Halo Extensions, I was so excited to talk to a professional about all the things that go into hair extensions, and all the misconceptions that come along with them. Tiffany’s salon, Salon Halo, is a large salon with 14 chairs in the adorable Columbus CONTINUED >

Salon Halo Park neighborhood. She has 11 stylists, all of whom are trained and specialize in hair extensions, though the salon offers all salon services, such as cuts, color, and waxing. The only method the salon uses to install hair extensions is hand-tied wefts, which she says is the superior way. “There’s no glue or keratin,” says Tiffany. “They’re the least damaging hair extensions you can have. The way we position them and the way they lay, you can wear a lot of different hairstyles. They lay very flat.” Unlike with other methods, you can wear your hair up in a high ponytail or many other hairstyles, and it’s nearly impossible to tell that it’s not a person’s natural hair. The handtied wefts also won’t damage your hair like with taped or microbead extensions since they don’t use an adhesive, which will break the hair over time. “It’s really low maintenance,” says Tiffany. “You only have to come in every two months, so I feel like you’re spending less time in the salon. Tape extensions are every 4-6 weeks, so you’re spending more time in the salon. An initial installation, which includes materials, will cost anywhere from $1200$1900 and the appointment lasts about 3.5-4 hours. Follow-up appointments take about 2.5 hours and cost between $350$600. Salon Halo uses Remy hair, which is considered the finest quality, as the cuticles are kept intact. It will last from 6 months to a year, depending on how it’s cared for. When I asked if there was anything someone shouldn’t do with their hair extensions, she said not to get them wet
