community so special. When I took this job, I was still a little green--it was my first editorial position and I was full of optimism. Since 2011, my numbers have changed--I added two dogs, two kids, and 119 issues of this magazine to my life's experience. I've learned to manage my time and search for the stories that matter--those of healing and hope, of businesses that are doing great things, and of the spaces and places that define the Northland. It's truly been a pleasure working on this magazine over the last ten years, and there are aspects that I will miss. Chief among them is working with my publisher, Jeron. She and her husband, Zach, have a heart for their community that will continue to push them forward. She trusted me when I wanted to change focus and supported me when I needed it. I'm so excited to see what they will do in the future.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Surviving AND Thriving HELLO NORTHLANDERS! I always look forward to the issues when I get to write directly to you, our readers. It’s a great chance for me to reflect on where we are and where we are going. This month we have exciting (and bittersweet) news to share! I have to start by giving an enormous thank you to Rachel Murphy, our editor, for dedicating 10 years to Northland Lifestyle. She helped establish the magazine as a coffee table piece from day one, and because of her tenacity, our publication has been and will continue to be the number one source for all things Northland. We are extremely grateful to have had her creativity and talent for 10 years and wish her well on her next journey. Both Rachel and I appreciate that we spend our days connecting with people from all walks of life. Despite the differences in people and experiences, all of those walks of life share one commonality--their desire to contribute to the community. They want to play a role in ensuring that our community is thriving, and it’s inspiring to watch them do it in their own way. With our Women's Issue, I want every female to give themselves grace. Here is a shout-out to every woman who has survived the past year. It has not been easy considering the circumstances, and I commend you. We've all had to become teachers overnight, turn bedrooms into offices, and still keep a positive attitude for the loved ones counting on us. It's been a struggle, but you made it. Now ladies…pull out what was supposed to be last year’s spring outfits and enjoy the beautiful weather to come. And remember, don’t just survive but thrive! Warmly,

Jeron Traphagan, Publisher

To be present and soak up all of the small moments. The past year was so challenging, but so much good came from it. I am so fortunate to have had the flexibility to be home with my children and husband. We took full advantage and soaked up every single second we could. I can’t wait to continue to do that, even as our lives return to normal. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PROFESSION?

M A RY OYL ER

I have always loved fashion, but even more, I love helping people. Being able to help women find their confidence and feel comfortable in their own skin is so rewarding. AMIE FR A N CO I S Owner/Business Manager at Pediatric Smiles Dentistry WHO MAKES UP YOUR FAMILY? Ryan, my husband and business partner, Evan, 11, and Ethan, who is 8. Our rescue dog, Ellie, and our three cats, Lilly and the twins (Frank and Twix). WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED IN THE LAST YEAR? Flexibility! I am a planner to the extreme. I lived by my schedule before this past year, and then everything changed. We have learned that a less scheduled life is not necessarily a less full life. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR PROFESSION? I didn’t! I have my master’s in art history and worked in museums and non-profits for several years. Then my husband, who is a pediatric dentist, decided to open his own practice. I told him I would help out for a couple of weeks. Well, it has been almost four years now, and I have found my calling. I love our office, our patients, and our community, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL CAUSE? The Northland Early Education Center. I am honored to be the president of the board of this amazing school. The Northland Early Education Center provides quality early education and therapy services for children aged birth to five who have special needs and typical needs. IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? The people who truly love you don’t see all the flaws you see in yourself. Try to see yourself through their eyes.

Hardy & Bacon, L.L.P. WHO MAKES UP YOUR FAMILY? Here at home, we are “three little kittens”: myself, and my two daughters, Nora and Hazel, ages 4 and 3 years old. We rely a lot on extended family—my godparents, parents, and four brothers and their families—all in the Kansas City-metropolitan area. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND NIGHT? Bedtime without drama and then tucking myself in with a British detective novel. Right now, I am on Busman’s Honeymoon by Dorothy L. Sayers. I also have two core groups of girlfriends who I cannot wait to see soon. I like to have long, slow dinners with lots of courses and sharing. We are planning on a Tasso’s Wine Dinner in May when everyone is fully vaccinated! WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED IN THE LAST YEAR? Gratitude. To have kept my girls healthy and financially secure during a global pandemic puts us among a fortunate few. I am a good enough mom. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SUMMER? We are drawn to water always and spend a lot of time on the Missouri River Bank at English Landing Park or swimming in our community pools at Riss Lake. IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Everything will be okay.

changed my life, not just by shrinking my tumor but by giving me the chance to become a mother,” says Liz. Liz was able to breastfeed her daughter for a year successfully. Although it raised her prolactin levels again, she was given the go-ahead to try again. Her son was born in 2018. Now, the family of four is complete. With their parents’ support, they’ve carved out a life of activity and joy, as Liz coaches the Northwest Bearcat Steppers Dance Team, and Jeff teaches and coaches track at North Kansas City High School. Liz also works as a wellness partner at Amare Global. But her most important job is as a wife and mom. While the tumor could come back at any time, Liz is just grateful for the opportunity to live life to the fullest now. “Now that I’m on the other side of it, I’m just grateful. It’s made me a better Christian, a more appreciative mom, and just an overall lover of life. It was a mountain to climb,” says Liz.

LIBERTY HOSPITAL'S AMY PATEL FIGHTS FOR AFFORDABILITY AND EARLY DETECTION THROUGH MAMMOGRAMS

the issue was presented in the 2020 fiscal year.”

After watching the number of women who receive routine mammograms take a sharp downturn in 2020 during the pandemic, Dr. Patel and her team push to remind women not to skip their routine exams but to be seen in 2021 as soon as possible. “Right now, the numbers that worry me the most are rising rates of breast cancer deaths because women have skipped or delayed annual screening mammograms. Research shows that skipping even one screening mammogram can raise the risk of dying from breast cancer because we won’t catch it when cancer is in its earliest stages and more easily treatable.” Technology is another priority. Stand-alone imaging centers typically don’t have the state-of-the-art equipment found at a hospital. “Since 2019, we’ve been utilizing artificial intelligence – AI – that references more

A nurse navigator works one-onone with patients who require treatment and presents them with a personalized plan and clear path forward. For women who require surgery, Dr. Elizabeth Butler of Saint Luke’s Cancer Institute at Liberty Hospital sees her patients in the same building as the breast care center, making the experience as easy as possible. “Dr. Butler is the only fellowship-trained breast

A WOMAN'S MIRACLE HOMEBORNE OFFERS OPTIONS FOR BIRTH JOURNEYS

34

Northland Lifestyle | May 2021

WHEN ANITA MOORE THINKS OF GIVING BIRTH, THE IMAGE OF A CALM POOL OF WARM WATER AND THE SUPPORT OF LOVING FAMILY MEMBERS COMES TO MIND. As a certified professional midwife and owner of Homeborne, she guides her clients through the process of a healthy pregnancy, from prenatal care all the way to birth, in the comfort of their own homes. Homebirth is a topic rife with misconceptions, says Moore. Rather than being the choice only of women that are completely entrenched in a holistic lifestyle, Moore says that many women choose home birth because of the amount of choice. “I’ve worked with Amish women in double-wide trailers with no electricity and women in million-dollar Johnson County homes. One of the things that makes hospital births different from home birth is that a woman’s body and baby are her choices. I’m there to give her the information she needs, and she can decide what she’s comfortable with from there,” says Moore. Unlike a doula, which acts as a birthing assistant during active labor and postpartum, a midwife guides a woman throughout the entirety of her pregnancy, offering testing when appropriate and necessary and tracking the baby’s growth in the same way that a doctor would. She can perform ultrasounds, find heartbeats, draw labs, and offers many of the same services to her clients as doctors do for their patients and on the same schedule. Moore says that one of the differences between midwifery and traditional medicine is the range of care options. Rather than going immediately to pharmaceutical remedies, she’s more likely to suggest chiropractic care, nutritional supplements, oils, and herbs, as well as prayer for health and healing. During birthing, Moore is present in the home during active labor and the time after, helping the mother acclimate to her new role, CONTINUED >

including basking in the golden hour after birth to cement the mother/child bond and help establish a breastfeeding routine. After mother and baby are cleaned up and comfortable, Moore cleans the space and allows them to settle into their new life, with checkins over the next few hours and weeks. While Moore has given birth at home several times herself, she points out that some women may not be candidates for home birth and would be better cared for in a hospital. She doesn’t eschew modern medicine or hospital birth. In fact, she embraces that for those that want or need it. “I’m well-trained in what natural, normal childbirth looks like. When there are concerns or complications, I can see that quickly and then do whatever remedies that we need to do to get right. And yes, that sometimes means that we end up transporting to the hospital. We are glad that’s there when we need it. We don’t happen to believe those normal healthy women expecting a normal healthy baby need a hospital,” says Moore. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Moore says that homebirth has risen in popularity due to the restrictions on guests and labor assistants in hospitals. With a home birth, a woman can have as large of a support team as she wishes while she labors. After birth, a birth certificate is issued, and a traditional pediatrician typically takes over the baby’s care. Moore says that she’s qualified to care for the baby for the first six weeks of life. “After that, you just have a friend,” she laughs. Having a homebirth can be very cost-effective compared with a traditional hospital birth. Insurance companies will not typically cover a home birth unless the midwife is licensed with the state. There is no licensing body in Missouri or Kansas, although Moore says they are trying to establish a licensing system. The out-of-pocket costs can be comparable to what a woman would pay for birth on a bronze health care plan. As healthcare prices rise and education about what is possible at home expands, services like Homeborne will continue to offer women options and wisdom about the path to giving birth.
