all had to get creative with utilizing space in the last year. If you want to see an example of how to keep kids at home and happy, check out our featured basement remodel completed by Owen Homes. With everything from a home theater to a couple of taps pouring your favorite brews to a sauna, this space captured everything the homeowners dreamed of. Sometimes it's the details that make a room. Dana Dunaway knows firsthand how window treatments can change a home after working with Solar Shield on a recent project. No matter what your space looks like or how it functions, our homes have become more important than ever. I hope this issue inspires you to get creative and make the most of your dwelling in the coming year!

S TAYCATI O N SOME THINGS ARE PERFECTLY TIMED--LIKE A BASEMENT FINISH PROJECT IN THE MIDST OF A PANDEMIC. Chris and Vickie Chancellor built their home in Kearney eight years ago but left the basement as a blank slate. But being self-described ‘recluses,’ the couple sought to create an entertainment haven that would keep their three children in college, high school, and grade school happy no matter the situation. To accomplish this task, they asked for help from Luke Owen and the team at Owen Homes. As an engineer, Chris had defined ideas already sketched out. Owen Homes brought them to life, including structural modifications to accommodate a home theater, home office, sauna, full kitchen, exercise room, and games area. Chris says that being able to bounce ideas off of Luke was ideal. “Luke has a really good design sense and being able to walk through the elements with him, he had a vision very quickly,” says Chris. “I’m very detail-oriented and had some pretty defined thoughts about how things should look, so he was great about receiving those ideas and offering tweaks that he thought would enhance it. It’s been a great experience,” he says.

Detail is important. The Chancellors utilized marble for their sizable island and tied it in with a tiled backsplash. Their two-tap system is surrounded by wine storage, so there are plenty of options.

Missing the movies? The home theater incorporates all of the elements that you long for at your favorite theater--in stair lights, comfy reclining chairs, but with the addition of unlimited snacks, and the ability to plug in a gaming system, an element much enjoyed by the Chancellor's tenyear-old son. The theater also includes enough space to bring massage therapists in for in-home treatment when the pandemic ends.

SOMETIMES THE BEST IDEAS ARE BORN OUT OF THRIFT. That’s the origin of the Northlander burger at Helen’s JAD at 2002 Armour Road. This unassuming North Kansas City bar and grill has a reputation for good food and great beer, and this burger is just one reason why. The Northlander stands apart from other burgers because of its green olive aioli, which owner Rod Bredemeier says was created out of a surplus of olives. “I created the Northlander with the Green Olive Aioli because I’m thrifty. We were going through a lot of olive brine for dirty martinis at the time and couldn’t bring myself to throw good food out. At the time, my bartender was from Michigan and told me she’d had olives on a burger once up there. I tinkered with the aioli for a bit and came up with a recipe,” says Bredemeier. It must have worked. The Northlander has been a favorite for more than ten years now.

want to attract and have the space to support? Perhaps you want to attract more songbirds to your gardens or animals, like toads, that help manage pests in the garden. Make sure your landscape provides the habitat features needed to attract and sustain these welcome residents. You will find lots of helpful resources on the National Wildlife Federation, Audubon, Natural Resources Conservation Services, Department of Natural Resources, and University Extension websites. Be patient and wait for a year to evaluate the results of your efforts. Then begin making any needed changes to meet your goals. A fresh coat of paint can make any area look fresh and welcoming. The top areas you should consider painting are the family room, dining room, rec room, master bedroom, or kitchen. But don’t grab just any color. Look for light, neutral colors that will be versatile and timeless. Would it be great to have a completely updated kitchen? Sure, but it’s probably not necessary. Instead, focus on one aspect to freshen up--countertops, cabinets, or backsplash.

one element stand out doesn’t necessarily help the look. Cabinets--give your cabinets a fresh coat of (neutral) paint and update the hardware if dated. Backsplash--although the backsplash isn’t the highest priority in many homes, it can pack a big impact, complimenting your countertops and wall colors. KITCHEN UPGRADE

STAGING When you’re selling your home, you want potential
buyers to feel welcome and allow them to imagine themselves in the space. Whether you hire a professional or do it yourself, eliminating clutter and personal items is the first step. Once that’s done, focus on the front porch, any gathering spaces, the master bedroom, and any odd spaces to let your buyers visualize how they would use the space.

Mirrors, lighting, and fixtures can make a huge difference. Older bathrooms tend to have dated mirrors. Updating with a more modern shape can transform a space. Lighting is very important. Your buyer should feel like the bathroom is a relaxing spa, so bright but soft
