January is traditionally our health and wellness issue—fitness routines, healthy recipes, and lots of resolutions. After a year of at-home workouts and stress baking, that seems a little trite. So this year, we are focusing on how to care for our mental well-being, whether that's challenging yourself to a game of chess, finding a way to support our seniors, soothing your senses with some furry time, or sending out good vibes to our frontline workers that have dealt first-hand with the worst of the pandemic. This new year will undoubtedly have its challenges, but after 2020, I feel motivated to make the best out of any situation. I hope you do as well. If the last year has taught me anything, it's that we are powerful when we come together as a community. So best of luck and intentions as we embark on a fresh start in 2021! Good vibes,

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

A New Perspective I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT 2020 HAS BEEN A YEAR FULL OF MANY EMOTIONS AND, FOR MOST, HAS FORCED US TO SEE OUR LIVES FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. COVID-19 made us slow down and look out the window and not just the windshield. We noticed that we might have started to take things and people for granted that played a more significant part in our lives than we realized. As we go back to "normal," you might ask yourself, what version of normal do we want? If there was ever a way to hit the reset button, we might have just done that in 2020. This year may mean a new career, newborn, or a new you, but I think we can all agree that 2021 will be a year of perspective and appreciation. As I think about perspective, I think about the magazine and the importance of seeing the Northland from many viewpoints. Always keep in perspective that we all come from different walks of life and enjoy other things. As I think about appreciation and Northland Lifestyle, I think about our editor, Rachel, and our photographer, Ashley (with Three Three Photography). They have always provided our readers with content that allows us to see the Northland from angles we hadn’t considered before. Without this fantastic team, Northland Lifestyle would not be the pillar for all things Northland. And most of all, I truly appreciate our partners and our readers. Without you, Northland Lifestyle would just be paper and words. Because of you, we can bring inspirational content that empowers us. May each day of the New Year inspire you to grow! Cheers,

KEYSTONE AWARDS HIGHLIGHT NORTHLAND ACCOMPLISHMENTS The EDC’s Keystone Awards went virtual December 4 with a packed agenda honoring 14 projects, individual efforts and more. Chair Greg Canuteson opened the meeting with a review of 2020, a year of “tremendous challenge” that the EDC largely overcame. Along with a wide range of ongoing business support services, the EDC distributed $1 million to Clay County businesses and, in one event, raised $50,000 for Feed Northland Kids. Despite the pandemic, the area saw 1,687 building permits issued during 2020, representing $172 million in investment — just in Kansas City. Equally strong growth was evident throughout the county. YOUR MOVE (CONTINUED) With most games clocking in at two hours long, focus is another learned skill. Talking isn’t allowed unless there’s a discrepancy on the board, so quiet discipline is needed. Fee says that living with the consequences of your actions is also important. It’s no surprise that parents and administrators are leveraging these skills to teach young people. Fee has worked with homeless shelters, school systems, and even the correctional system. Fee also offers a chess merit badge to the Boy Scouts that has been wildly popular. Since the pandemic hit, the KCCC has taken their Friday night tournaments online. Chess is strangely suited to online play, and the internet has been a popular medium long before it took off as a faceto-face communication platform. Some players prefer the Zoom platform because they can chat with each other while they play. Fee says that the KCCC and the Regal Chess School are seeing the biggest boom in years. The KCCC boasts players from around the world, including players in Mexico City. And he’s ready to welcome more. For more information on the KCCC, visit KansasCityChessClub.com.

1. Pick a Problem to Address A leader can never become a catalyst until he or she first takes ownership of the problem they wish to solve. You cannot rally people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these days; people know when a leader is being half-hearted, and they don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that

credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey.
