OUTPATIENT TOTAL JOINT SURGERY INCLUDING HIPS, KNEES, AND SHOULDERS Recover in the Comfort of Your Own Home Lower Infection Risk | Boutique Setting Joint Care Coordinator for One on One Education and Personalized Care Dr. David Paul became interested in health care through his father, who was a dentist. As a medical student, he became interested in orthopedics after shadowing his older brother many times, Dr. Robert Paul. He performed his residency with OSI, then joined the practice following its completion. He earned his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He received his bachelor’s degree in science from Avila University, Kansas City, Mo. In high school, Dr. Paul was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track and field. He continued his basketball career in college, playing Division I basketball at Eastern Illinois University for two years. He was academic All American his second year at Eastern. He transferred and finished his basketball career at Avila University. With his background in sports, he enjoys working with young athletes, helping them return to their level of play. He also appreciates the technical aspect of performing orthopedic surgery, as well as the gratification of being able to improve his patients’ lives in a relatively short period of time. Although he still performs most aspects of orthopedic surgery, his practice has become extremely busy with adult reconstruction, or total joint replacements. He began performing the direct anterior approach to hip replacement about 10 years ago, helping patients recover in less time and with less pain than with traditional joint replacement surgery. He strives to keep current on the newest and most innovative surgical techniques, especially as they relate to knee replacement surgery. Dr. Paul is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He belongs to several professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics and the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. He also serves as an associate clinical instructor for the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and trains surgeon for the orthopedic surgery residency. Dr. Paul and his wife, Melissa, have four adult children, Matthew, Allison, Meagan and Nathan; and three dogs. He enjoys boating, fishing, traveling and spending time with family.

KIDS AND PETS—BOTH CAPTURE THE FEELING OF INNOCENCE THAT ADULTS GROW OUT OF SO QUICKLY. If you want to witness pure joy, find a splash pad on a hot day or visit the dog park when someone has extra treats. As we head back to school, we want to take a moment to celebrate our future leaders and the animals that teach them to love! Our August issue is full of fun this year. I had a blast creating colorful activities for our "Eat the Rainbow" party. Yoga instructor Niki Larrea's suggestion of a meditation bottle even made it into our party scheme! Larrea's kid-centered yoga practice has tons of great ideas of how to connect with your little one and how to help them find their center, even as it grows upward (quickly!). For those of us that have fur kids instead, Goldie Arnold's passion at the Northland Animal Welfare Society's low-cost Spay and Neuter Clinic will inspire you. Enabling lower-income families to lovingly care for their pets is an amazing way to level the

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

My Reasons Why DEAR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, I HOPE THAT AUGUST FINDS YOU WELL! Our kids and pets issue is one that is near and dear to my heart, especially since every day brings me closer to meeting my new addition, a little brother for my three-year-old son, Coy! Now that we are welcoming a new little man to the house, I'm outnumbered. It's just my little Jack Russell terrier, Lily, and me against a wave of testosterone! My heart is never more full than when I think of my family, both furry and human. Lily and Coy are best friends, which is the cutest thing to see. Animals are such a blessing and can help teach so much empathy to our kids without saying a word. As a dance teacher at a local studio, I've always loved kids but becoming a mother took that love to a whole new level. There are days that I feel like a superhero. There are other days that I feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle (mom vs. the three-year-old=battle royale somedays!). But there's never a day that goes by that I don't know that what I'm doing is important--raising the next generation to be kind, gentle, and courageous. As one more little life enters our house soon, I know that I'll be giving Coy some extra cuddles. And Lily? Well, I can't say enough how she's been a trooper for adapting to life with an energetic toddler, and I know that she will be just as wonderful with his brother. If you have a child or a fur kid at home, give them an extra hug today. They are the greatest gifts in the world! Happy August!

“Five of our specialties made gains this year, including our Neonatology team which rose nearly 30 spots,” said Paul Kempinski, MS, FACHE, president and CEO of Children’s Mercy. This year, U.S. News surveyed more than 180 pediatric centers to gather clinical and operational data. This data was then combined with results from a reputational survey in which board-certified pediatric specialists representing the 10 areas were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty.

OM, OM, OMMMMMMMM. That sound represents de-stressing and focusing on our inner selves for many practitioners of yoga. What do children have to destress from? Plenty! As their bodies change and grow, yoga-inspired exercises can help youngsters stretch and learn to utilize their bodies in healthy ways. That’s one reason by instructor Niki Larrea started the Kids Kula. Her workshops for children ages 3-6 and 7-10 and 11-13 regularly take place at the KC Yoga Center, now located at 8741 N. Stoddard in Zona Rosa, but she also travels around to preschools and school groups. Her lessons are simple and tailored to the age group--her experience as a preschool teacher is evident as she connects with one of her students, Will.

Eat the Rainbow!

ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY PHOTOGRAPHY JOEL SCHNEIDER

IF YOU’VE EVER SLAVED AWAY AT THE STOVE TO CREATE A TASTY DINNER FOR THE FAMILY ONLY TO HAVE THEM TURN THEIR NOSES UP AT THE SIGHT OF VEGETABLES, I FEEL YOUR PAIN. Healthy food can be a tough sell some days, but growing kids need nutrients from plants to thrive. So how do you get them to eat some green without losing your mind? We asked Sugar and Spice Catering in Parkville for some ideas, and they delivered! Their menu of tasty kid-friendly treats has a secret—it’s chock-full of veggies from across the color spectrum. Their sloppy joes include green peppers. The chicken taquitos hid fresh corn kernels. Pizza roll-ups get dipped in lycopene—oops, we mean marinara sauce. And that mac and cheese? There’s not a noodle in sight, replaced by paleo-favorite cauliflower. Sugar and Spice’s menu sparked a theme for this party—eat the rainbow! With the school year approaching, it’s the perfect time to have an outdoor ice-breaker party for your kids and their friends, with fun crafts and healthy food. Sophie,

EAT THE RAINBOW!

(CON TI N U ED)

Pa r t y Tips TIP 1 Keep things light. After a summer off, sometimes an icebreaker is necessary. Some fun accessories for a selfie-session can get kids laughing and in the mood to party. TIP 2 Keep it simple. For a kids’ party, the elaborate decor is unnecessary. Use bold colors to set the scene and let the activities be the focus. TIP 3 Plan some activities, but don’t overload the schedule. Two activities are sufficient for most parties. As a bonus, craft projects double as personalized favors!

ACTIVITY CHEAT SHEET Niki Larrea from The Kids Kula introduced our first activity, the meditation bottle. You'll need: + empty water bottles + clear glue + food coloring + sequins + glitter + water TO MAKE: Fill each bottle to a third with clear glue. Add a few drops of food coloring and then add sequins, glitter, beads, Easter grass, or whatever other found objects strike your fancy. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and seal. Then shake vigorously to combine. Enjoy as you would a snowglobe or use for more focused meditation exercises. ACTIVITY TWO: ICE PAINTING For an activity that beats the heat and inspires your youngsters, make some popsicle paintings. Combine liquid watercolor paints with water in an ice cube tray, keeping each segment as one color. Put popsicle sticks in the trays and freeze. Remove about 20 minutes before you want to begin so they will have time to soften. Instead of canvases, choose cotton items such as tote bags, t-shirts, or bandanas. Let the kids go wild and create an item for school that no one else will have! Special thanks to Sugar And Spice Catering in Parkville. 28

Plus, you can remove the trays if you have an important event or special occasion, the average treatment takes only 12 months, and you spend less time in the dental office than you would with traditional metal braces. IF YOU TOLD GOLDIE ARNOLD IN 2010 THAT SHE WOULD BE NECK DEEP IN FERAL CATS MOST SATURDAYS, SHE WOULD HAVE LAUGHED AT YOU. This realtor turned animal activist never anticipated becoming the spearhead in a community effort to offer spay and neutering services to low-income families, but since 2012, that's what she and the Northland Animal Welfare Society (NAWS) have done. The organization began as a dream of a facility that would offer a dog park, vet services, and more, and slowly, they are realizing that dream. After opening their first clinic in Riverside in 2012, they finally found a forever home at 6972 N. Broadway with their Spay/Neuter Clinic. NAWS is almost entirely staffed by volunteers, from the people that cuddle the pets as they are coming out of anesthesia to the vets that perform surgeries four days a week. NAWS holds several fundraisers each year to keep them running, including Woofstock at Linden Square. Arnold also keeps busy soliciting grants and donations from a variety of sources. The aim of the clinic is simple: to ensure that no family is limited in the care of their pet by their economic status. Qualifying households which meet an income threshold are offered greatly reduced rates on a variety of medical services including spay/neuter, microchipping, deworming, heartworm tests, vaccinations, and nail trimming.

The clinic is not a full-service veterinary office, nor is it an animal shelter. Arnold has been careful to narrow the focus to serve the greatest good with their resources. The clinic is also home to a pet food pantry for those that can't

afford pet food, a pet boutique full of donated merchandise, and has a groomer on site as well. In the basement, dog obedience classes are available. And soon, there will be an outdoor 'catio' where owners can bring their cats to play and socialize. Another of NAWS main initiatives is in addressing the free-roaming (feral) cat population. Arnold says that there are at least two free-roaming cats spayed or neutered each surgery day as part of the Trap Neuter Return program and has serviced more than 1000 cats to date. Arnold and the staff at NAWS believe that animal companionship is for everyone, regardless of income. "I've heard people say, 'well, they shouldn't have pets if they can't afford

them,' but it's not always that simple. For older people living on a fixed income, sometimes their pets are the only other living things they see. Animals bring a joy that can't be measured in dollars. We just want to do our part to keep the homeless pet population in check," says Arnold.

ORANGE EASEL SCHOOL OF ART A TRAINING GROUND FOR ART

IMAGINE IF LIONEL MESSI HAD NEVER RUN CONDITIONING DRILLS OR IF ED SHEERAN HAD NEVER PRACTICED HIS SCALES. Would we have one of the greatest soccer players or most talented singer/songwriters right now? No. Because practice makes better. (Who wants perfect anyway?) That’s precisely the philosophy behind Orange Easel School of Art. The children’s art school that started in Allison Jensen’s basement in 2012 has grown into two locations (Liberty and Platte Woods) offering art classes and camps for all ages. What it doesn’t provide are cookie cutter craft projects to fill time. Jensen’s philosophy on art is simple--art isn’t something that you make, it’s something that you do. It’s a skill like any other and skills are made stronger by education, technique, and practice, practice, practice. And while many think of Orange Easel because of their innovative approach to toddler and younger children’s art through interactive storytimes and free play, they also offer more intensive courses for students Kindergarten through 12th grade focused on building the skills that will support greater creativity. Sara Woolfolk, director of the Platte Woods location, says that the weekly classes during the school year help students explore the options and find their chosen mediums. “Just like dance or sports or martial arts; our kids come to class each week for an hour. Students can sign up for the semester or go month by month. Every month we have a different focus. In the fall, we start with pastels and then go on to clay, acrylic, CONTINUED >

watercolor, metal, fiber. Our goal is to expose them to a wide variety of media so they can figure out what they like to do and help them get better at doing it,” says Woolfolk. In creating a habit of practicing art, they also create a community surrounding it. Friendships are formed and support systems grow organically when kids find other kids that enjoy the same things. That network of likeminded students can be very encouraging as they find their way in what can sometimes be a solitary pursuit. Kids also learn how to critique productively and receive criticism in a way that makes them better artists. Jensen describes their community as acting as the coaches for creators. In addition to monthly exploratory classes, Orange Easel offers drawing boot camps throughout the year for students who want to focus on form. Woolfolk emphasizes that all of their classes focus on the process of art, not the outcome. Drawing camps allow enthusiastic students to focus on technique.

“We aren’t aiming for something to put on the fridge. We want to develop the skills that they need to continue creating outside of class,” Woolfolk says. As art classes stay on the chopping block in many school curriculums, the time to dig in and learn real techniques is a luxury that many students are not afforded in their typical classrooms. Giving the gift of focus is an amazing way to foster creativity in students that connect with art. Orange Easel has two locations: 249 W. Mill St. Ste 107 in Liberty and 7617 NW Prairie View Road at Platte Woods. Registration for fall classes opens August 1st. For a full list of courses, visit OrangeEaselArt.com.

PARTING THOUGHTS

ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY

PARENTING IS NO EASY FEAT. The decisions start immediately—do you find out the sex? Drugs or no drugs? Homebirth or hospital? And of course, one of the most important questions of all—what are we going to call this kid? With our first daughter, the name came easily—Iris from me and Carina from my husband. But upon finding out that we were having another girl, the real work began as we searched to find a name that we loved as much as hers. Luckily, on a seven-hour road trip to visit family, we had plenty of time to mull it over and decided on Indra, which means ‘possessing drops of rain’ in Sanskrit. We also decided another thing—we weren’t going to reveal the name until she was born. Of course, we told Iris. She’s a very verbal toddler but she’s also very ornery. And so when her grandmother and aunt were trying to coax the name of her upcoming sibling from her lips, she had a bit of fun with them. As they changed her diaper one day during a family gathering, Cici asked, “Iris, now I know you know your sister’s name. Won’t you tell Cici?” Iris nodded and looked very seriously at Cici. Cici asked again. “What’s your sister’s name going to be?” Iris whispered, “Moana.” Cici and Auntie laughed. Obviously, we

weren’t naming our daughter after our firstborn’s favorite Disney character. Aunt Holly decided to give it a try. “Come on now, Iris, you can tell me. What’s her name going to be?” she asked as she leaned down to her level. Iris looked up at her earnestly and said, “Poopy diaper.” And that’s how Moana Poopy Diaper came to complete our family. We just call her Indra for short.
