HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2018 was a great year for me personally and I can't wait to see what 2019 holds. Here at Northland Lifestyle, January offers a chance for another twelve months of getting to know you, one neighbor at a time. Of course, most of us have some resolutions each year, many of them fitness related. For a little inspiration, check out our feature story on the KC Illusions synchronized figure skating teams. Although figure skating is most often seen as a solo sport, these teams are moving together to make beautiful routines and keeping in shape while they do it. What does it take to do that? Squats. Lots of squats and plenty of stretching! Scott Schloegel sets us on the right path financially with his January money 'to-do' list. If we set our goals now, we may have even more to celebrate in December of 2019! As a new (again) mom, I particularly appreciate the green smoothie recipe from Dragonfly Tea Zone. If I can get my veggies in through a straw (and maybe coerce my toddler to do the same), then I'm calling it a win!

dents from Park Hill South High School (PHSHS) spent several hours painting holiday artwork on the windows of SPIN! Pizza in the Village at Burlington Creek for the community to enjoy. Seniors in Meg Carson’s Studio Art class, who are planning careers in art, were given an opportunity to try a new technique while sharing their colorful holiday designs with the community. After SPIN! Pizza reached out with an invitation for her students to paint the windows followed by a pizza party to thank them for their artwork, teacher Meg Carson challenged her students to create sketches that incorporate both a holiday theme and pizza. Several students’ designs were

PUTTING PERSONAL BACK INTO PATIENT CARE NORTHLAND SURGERY CENTER PROVIDES A WELCOME ALTERNATIVE
“It’s so reassuring to have a nurse call you every morning and know that you have access to her 24/7.” JUST ABOUT EVERY HEALTH CARE PROVIDER HOPES TO BE KNOWN FOR THAT “PERSONAL” TOUCH, BUT ONE NORTHLAND SURGERY CENTER SEEMS TO BE DELIVERING ON THAT BOAST. "You're treated like royalty from the very beginning." Jetta McGinnis was 62 in September when her surgeon suggested Total Joint Center of the Northland for her knee replacement surgery. McGinnis trusted her physician and was quite the experienced patient: due to some birth defects, she had already undergone a hip surgery six years before and a total replacement on her other knee in January 2018—both performed by the same surgeon but in a traditional hospital setting. The change of venue, she says, made all the difference. “There's something less threatening for me to see an office building instead of a huge hospital,” she says. “And it was all done so efficiently. There was no waiting anywhere. It was like, when you got there, you were their only patient." That small capacity and personal contact is by design, says administrator Justin Turentine. The center, which opened in July 2017 and includes two operating rooms, is focused solely on total joints—primarily knees, hips and shoulders. Most patients go home the same day. “If you’re a specialty center and you do one thing and you do it extremely well, I think that’s beneficial for the patients,” he says. After more than 250 surgeries since opening, Turentine says the center’s patient satisfaction rate is around 96 percent, due in large 18

part to the expertise of the 10 orthopedic surgeons who practice there as well as what he calls the center’s “concierge" service. Each patient attends a one-on-one pre-operative class before surgery to talk not only about what to expect during the procedure but also how to prepare their home, food preparation, pain management, etc. Patients enjoy a private room during their time at the center and have 24/7 access to a patient navigator once the surgery is complete—a big plus for McGinnis, she says. “When you've had surgery, you want answers now, not in six or seven hours when they get around to calling you,” she says. “It's so reassuring to have a nurse call you every morning and know that you have access to her 24/7.” McGinnis also appreciated the center’s various options for pain management—especially important for patients who could potentially develop an addiction to traditional pain medications. She says she struggled stepping down from the meds after her last knee surgery but this time went home instead with a pain pump, which controlled the majority of her pain. Patient safety, in fact, is a major focus of the center. As of this writing, the center has not experienced any post-operative infections. Plus, to increase safety and allow patients to return home sooner, the center only accepts patients who have a limited number of other health issues and meet certain criteria, including BMI and age limits. As a result, staff say it’s the perfect option for active adults ready to get back to life. Many patients are in their 40s and 50s, and most need surgery after some type of athletic injury or to correct a malformation they were born with. For McGinnis, who teaches school and enjoys riding horses, she was just excited to get back to her daily routine. “If the only reason for having your knee done is to sit around your house and not do anything, you're not really the best candidate,” she says. “I'm just so grateful I got it done there.” For more information, visit TotalJointCenterNorthland.com. Weekly practices are conducted to ensure winning performances. In addition to outfits and skates, it is imperative skaters have the drive and commitment to do their best. The Intermediate team practices twice a week with an additional three hours of mandatory individual practice required each week via private lessons. Practice includes a 15-30 minute warm up off the ice, followed by up to 120 minutes of practice on the ice. All teams, with the exception of the Adult team practice, meet on Saturday morning. The Adult team has its practice on Sunday nights. The Sunday practice includes one hour on ice and one hour off the ice, as well as an initial 30-minute off-ice warm up. It is intense and does require a time commitment, but the results seem to make it all worthwhile, and the tenacity displayed by each athlete certainly pays off. In the 2017-2018 season the Intermediate team and the Adult team both nabbed the ISI (Ice Skating Institute) National Championship titles. “Last season our Intermediate team won first place at ISI Nationals and this season our Adult team took second place at the CONTINUED >

From April until the following August, practice is limited and not mandatory. “Each team works on one routine for the entire season, and each routine ranges anywhere from two and a half minutes up to four minutes,” comments Furman. “There are a lot of moving parts to these routines.” And for those wondering if synchronized skating is a possible ticket to college, Furman suggests there are three colleges in the United States that currently offer this as a varsity sport: Miami University in Ohio, Adrian College in Michigan and Trine University in Indiana. “Synchronized ice skating is a very unique sport, as it brings together the beauty of ice skating with team dynamics,” notes Furman. “We welcome anyone to come in at any time. If you are interested in joining a team, we want you to join.” 24

And that’s why I got the tattoo Galatians 6:14—it really put everything into perspective.” In the midst of preparing for his 2014 competition, Rich became a father for the first time when he and Hillary adopted their now 4-year-old daughter, Lakelyn—an event that had a large impact on his decision to remove himself from individual competition. “Stepping away from the individual side, that had to happen. When I was in individual, I was so fixated on competing at the highest level—which you have to be to be the best in the world at anything,” Rich says. “There was no balance in my life, and I saw that. When we were going to have Lakelyn, I was like, ‘you know what, either my fitness and me competing at that level is going to have to give or me being a dad.’ I wasn’t willing to sacrifice being a dad.” Rich and Hillary, who now have three adopted children: Lakelyn; Trice, whose full name is Richard III; and Harper Violet, Lakelyn’s biological sister, have found some of that seemingly unattainable balance through Rich’s transition to team competitions, which have allowed him more of an opportunity to think about training while he’s training and to not think about training while he isn’t.

A Visit to CarriacouJust What the Doctor Ordered
SOME OF THE OLDEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD LIVE ON CARRIACOU. WHAT MAKES THIS ISLAND SO SPECIAL? ARTICLE DIANA LAMBDIN MEYER PHOTOGRAPHY BRUCE N. MEYER

Can the water be a more tranquil shade of blue at Carriacou?
TRAVEL IS GOOD FOR THE BODY AND SOUL. Numerous scientific studies from credible organizations prove that a vacation minimizes stress and depression, reduces risk of heart attack, increases creativity and overall levels of happiness. So, your wellness routine for 2019 should include at least one or two vacations, but where is the healthiest place to travel? May I suggest the island of Carriacou? It’s one of seven islands that make up the British West Indies nation of Grenada. Some of the world’s oldest people live here, including one woman who is 113 years old and still “gets around,” according to those who know her. Carriacou has about 8,000 residents. They have only four doctors and more than 100 rum shops. Common sense would naturally dictate that it’s the rum keeping people on this little island in such good shape.

A view of Carriacou Island.
GETTING TO CARRIACOU From Kansas City, we took a 5:20 a.m. flight on American to Miami, had just enough time to grab breakfast before boarding an 11 a.m. flight to St. George’s Grenada. To paraphrase the Zac Brown Band song, we had our toes in the water and seats in the sand by 3:30. Since you’ve come this far, take your time to explore the island of Grenada before or after you visit Carriacou. Known as the Spice Island, Grenada produces approximately 20 percent of the world’s nutmeg; the rest comes from Indonesia. For those who bake and know your spices, you know that this 20 percent is the highest quality in the world. It’s much more fragrant and flavorful than Indonesian nutmeg. Farmers on the island also grow paprika, curry, cinnamon, saffron, turmeric, ginger and cloves, which are then sold at the St. George’s

Spice Market. There is no haggling at this market and prices are all the same. Your toughest decisions are what quantities and how many different spices you want. top to enjoy the breeze, fresh air and happy sea gulls that follow along. The best part of the ferry ride is that it passes over a live volcano called Kick ‘em Jenny, which gets my vote for best named volcano ever. Most of the time, Jenny just bubbles up a lot of gas from the ocean floor, which makes the ferry ride a little bumpy for a while. Where else can you say you’ve ridden on a live volcano? Most people who come to Carriacou do so for the 32 dive sites around the island. The reefs are healthy and unspoiled here and the water is usually very calm making diving easy for even inexperienced divers. For more experienced divers, the twin Sisters Rocks is considered some of the most amazing coral in the Caribbean. While seeking opportunities to improve your personal health in 2019, consider the health of coral reefs and other marine life by choosing a sunscreen without oxybenzone or octinoxate, ingredients known to kill coral reefs and create cancerous-like lesions on sea turtles. A healthy ocean contributes to healthier people. Once on Carriacou, your spirit should very quickly acclimate to “island time.” Most of us fast-paced, multi-tasking Americans use that term in condescension of slow service while on a beach vacation. 34

But I’ve visited 30 or more Caribbean islands and this is the first one where I felt truly transformed to a quieter, calmer version of myself. Maybe this is why people live longer here – the peace and tranquility. Even as we

returned to the main island of Grenada, the pace of traffic and hubbub of activity (nothing compared to rush hour on I-35) felt overwhelming. One of the best places to eat in all of the Caribbean is a place called Bogles Round House on Carriacou. It is, as the name suggests, located in a round house. The chef was a child who once lived in this house and now manages the restaurant and nearby lodging. Everything is fabulous. If you’re not familiar with the common Caribbean dish callaloo, this is the place to try it. Callaloo is somewhat like spinach, so I highly recommend the tortellini made with callaloo here. The fresh catch of the day will be exactly that ― literally minutes from having been in the ocean and seasoned so well. They also make their own mango ice cream. Maybe it’s the food at Bogles Round House that makes everyone live so long on Carriacou. When it comes time to visit the local rum shops, you know, as a part of your 2019 wellness plan, you’ll want to ask for Clarke’s Court Rum. It’s the local blend using molasses from Cuba. I asked the bartender about his favorite Clarke’s Court blend. He recommended Pure Jab, named for the traditional jab jab dance during Carnival season. So, I ordered a shot, then spent the next ten minutes coughing and choking while simply trying to breathe. Pure Jab is not even the most potent of Clarke’s Court labels. White Ball is 75 proof and so flammable that the airlines won’t let you bring it on board. I can’t imagine that becoming a regular part of anyone’s daily routine and calling it healthy. But something on Carriacou makes people live happy, productive and long lives. If not the rum, then it may be simply the lifestyle of this tiny island tucked away in the eastern reaches of the Caribbean. A visit every year or two should be a part of your wellness plan and will surely make a difference for those of us not fortunate enough to call Carriacou home. FINANCIAL BUZZ
Game Plan 2019 JANUARY IS A GREAT TIME TO SET FINANCIAL GOALS WHEN MAKING RESOLUTIONS, MANY PEOPLE FOCUS ON PHYSICAL GOALS--LOSING WEIGHT OR GETTING THEIR HOMES ORGANIZED. January is also a great time to figure out your finances--after all, your money doesn't grow if you don't water it. We asked Scott Schloegel, a certified financial planner at Premier Financial Partners, for his top tips for the new year. Here's how to get your house in order! 1. SET CLEAR GOALS AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE MEASURABLE AND REALISTIC. "People often want to retire at 65 but they need to put more context to their goal. Putting the details into the goals is what helps them come to fruition," says Schloegel. As an example, if your goal is to retire by a particular month when you're 65, define what kind of income you need to draw from investments, your cost of living, etc. Then work backward to fund those numbers. 2. SET A BUDGET AND STICK TO IT. This is one of the most critical pieces to financial planning. Even if you always have money left over at the end of the month, a budget will tell you where your money is going. By tracking your income and outgoing expenditures, you can determine your true discretionary income. Once you know that, you can direct investments and purchasing wisely. 36

3. CALCULATE YOUR NET WORTH. Lay out all your assets (real estate, investments, personal property, and liquid bank accounts) and your debts (consumer credit card debts, mortgages, car payments, medical bills, student loans). Your net worth is the baseline from which you measure your gains and losses. Knowing this number is the first

step to increasing it. 4. DEVELOP A PLAN TO PAY DOWN DEBT. "Once you've calculated your net worth, the thing that hinders you from increasing that net worth is outstanding debt. Ultimately, any money you are paying out is money you could be saving," says Schloegel. Schloegel recommends a modified debt snowball method--pay off your smallest balances first, regardless of what the interest rate is. Once the smallest debts are paid, look at what's left and focus on the accounts with the highest interest rates.
Patriot Outreach is a non-profit with a mission of providing support to our Warriors, Veterans, and First Responders suffering from PTSD and other tramautic stressors. We have moved forward with a National Capital Campaign to raise funds for the construction of a Continuum Care Retirement Campus (includes a Dementia Village) and a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Hospital (Kansas).
5. ESTABLISH AN EMERGENCY FUND. Having roughly three months of living expenses on hand means that if you suffer a job loss, you have the time to take a breath and figure out your next move. 6. INCREASE YOUR INVESTMENTS. "'Pay yourself first' is a pretty common saying but people don't realize that one of the ways to do that is by contributing to your employer sponsored retirement plan. If your company offers a match to a 401K contribution, take it. Beyond that, look at your budget and your discretionary income and consider increasing your contribution by a few percentage points. It's an easy way shore up your savings," says Schloegel. 7. CONSOLIDATE AND REBALANCE INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS. Since people change jobs more frequently now, it's helpful to consolidate old retirement plans from former employers into one cohesive account. This can also help to eliminate overlap of investments. Once you have it all in one place, assess your risk tolerance for wherever you are in your financial life and rebalance accordingly. 8. CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT. Make sure that your credit report is accurate. If there's something amiss, address it immediately. 9. CONDUCT A BENEFICIARY REVIEW ON YOUR RETIRE-

MENT ACCOUNTS, ANNUITIES, AND INSURANCE POLICIES. Has your life changed because of a divorce or marriage? Make sure that your money is going to the person that you intended. Updating your beneficiaries takes little time but will ensure that your wishes are followed in the event of your death.
