A Summer Splash! A SUMMER SPLASH INDEED! As July hits, it seems like it's been summer for years already but that won't dull my enthusiasm! Our summer issue is all about what matters--our veterans, our families, and the places where we can enjoy them. This issue also marks the seventh anniversary of Northland Lifestyle Magazine! It's hard to believe that it has been that long but I'm happy to say that it’s true. As we come into our seventh year, I'm excited for what the future holds. violence shelter. More than 35 Curry employees traded in their suits and briefcases for shovels and power tools as they spent their work day on tasks ranging

from outdoor maintenance to yard beautification enhancement projects. Employees removed dead trees and debris from the property, mulched, planted flowers, weeded the garden, fixed fences, painted a fire lane and moved in new patio tables, chairs and benches for shelter guests. The result of nearly 100 hours of combined donated time was a completely overhauled outdoor space. In addition to Curry Real Estate volunteers, this project was possible thanks to donations from Zipco, BC Hardscapes, Sharp Landscaping, Mike Siebolt, McConnell & Associates, and Arch Roofing. Curry also donated items including umbrellas, sunscreen, toys, diapers and more to the shelter to ensure guests had summer essentials on-hand. Callsign Brewing: Founded by Veterans to Honor Heroes NKC’S NEWEST BREWERY DEDICATES BEER AND ITS PURPOSE TO ACTIVE, VETERAN, AND FALLEN MILITARY HEROES. ARTICLE PETE DULIN | PHOTOGRAPHY JOEL SCHNEIDER CALLSIGN BREWING ORIGINATED AS AN IDEA BY HOMEBREWERS, VETERANS, AND LONGTIME FRIENDS STEVE SIROIS AND MORRIS LONCON THAT BECAME A MISSION. The brewery and beers honor active, veteran, and fallen members of the military. Owned by Steve and wife, Chandra, they enlisted son Steve Sirois Jr. and friends Larry Walter, Steve Fry and others to help them build and launch the brewery. Set to open in early July, Callsign Brewing is a 10-barrel brewery and taproom located in a former tire patch factory. Built in 1932, the 3,000 squarefoot building has a barrel-vaulted roof that suggests the look and feel of an airplane hangar. “A call sign is a designated name and number that identifies a certain flight,” says Sirois, a 28-year Air Force veteran who currently serves as a flight engineer with the Missouri Air National Guard’s 180th Airlift Squadron. “During the beginning stage of the brewery, we identified beers after the call sign of fallen military aircraft. I’ve known too many people that never returned home. This is my way of honoring the folks we lost.” A

Hurlburt Field at a Florida airbase where Sirois first flew, will be mounted on the brewery’s bartop. Hand-drawn framed artwork by Robert Barber will adorn the walls. Barber’s artwork will appear on beer label designs for Fighter Pale Ale, Lifter Irish Red, and Bomber Stout. The taproom will have 12 taps with eight traditional styles and four rotating seasonal beers once the brewhouse schedule is in full swing.

Sirois and Loncon brewed the first batch of Fighter Pale Ale in early June. “Pale ale is my favorite beer style,” Sirois says. “Each batch will have a different call sign to honor fallen fighter crews.” Steve Sirois, Jr. is a loadmaster for the same squadron as his father. Other men in the founding group and key contractors are retired military. Collectively, the team behind Callsign Brewing have labored to not only create a place for people to gather and drink beer, but also salute brothers and sisters in arms as well as men and women in public service. Launching the brewery has been daunting but ultimately satisfying. “I can’t describe the feeling. We’ve been working the last 13 months,” Sirois says. “Now it has become a reality. It’s an overwhelming feeling of joy. Once the doors open and people come, it will all be worth it.” 18

co-founder of the Veterans Community Project, (VCP), works on moving homeless veterans off the streets and into tiny houses. He wants Kansas City to be an example of what can happen when vets help vets. These retired veterans believe “one homeless veteran is one too many.” VCP is intent on offering a solution to the problem. Mixon, a Lee’s Summit native, and veterans Chris Stout and Bryan Meyer are the co-founders and day-to-day operation leads of the Veterans Community Project, an organization dedicated to providing individual housing for homeless vets in the area. Since its inception in 2016, VCP has created a subdivision of tiny houses at 89th and Troost on land acquired from the Land Bank of Kansas City. Each of the planned 50 units is about the size of a studio apartment and furnished with the basics. 26

The aptly named tiny houses are 240 square feet each. Every home is built upon a concrete foundation and meets code requirements of new construction. All are connected to city sewer, water, and electric services. The homes were designed by Liberty architecture firm, A3G Architects. Each tiny home consists of a kitchen, bed and climate control. The veterans pay no rent or utilities and are allowed to stay six months or a year. There is no standard application process. Residents are identified through outreach programs. Allocation of living space is flexible and customized to each veteran’s individual needs. “When the veterans do transition out of the community, they can take all of the items out of their tiny home with them,” Mixon explains. “But,” he emphasized, “VCP’s main mission is not to just provide a roof, couch or refrigerator.” “The tiny houses are the catchy, sexy, cool piece. VCP provides services such as free health care, dental care, veterinary services, and help in finding work.” Mixon and his partners firmly believe that is the best thing they can do for their “brothers and sisters.” One tiny house and its contents, plus food and other necessities, costs about $15000 to sponsor. Donations to the non-profit organization are tax-deductible. Corporations and individuals have come forward to support the endeavor. “People have come up to me when I’m out in a public place and say they just want to shake my hand and thank me for what our group is doing,” Mixon shares. “People of all ages and many different areas have contributed to our success. Kansas City definitely has our backs.”

“We may have started this,” Mixon confides, “but it’s the people of Kansas City who have made it happen. Everything in every tiny house, including the materials and labor to construct them, is donated.” “The support from the community has been overwhelming,” Mixon says.” Veterans Village is a tribute to their care and response to an urgent and real need.” VCP is committed to providing housing stability and address the underlying cause of the veterans’ homelessness. In January, 13 homeless veterans (11 men and two women) received their brand new tiny homes. The tears shared were tears of joy. Now, Mixon says he won’t sleep until every one of his “brothers and sisters” has a roof over their heads. He’s going to fight for them at home just as they fought for him abroad. Eggs Benedict HOLLANDAISE SAUCE ++ 4 Egg Yolks ++ I Tbs. Lemon Juice ++ 1/2 Cup Melted Butter ++ Pinch Salt

BENEDICT ++ 8 Eggs ++ 4 English Muffins ++ 8 slices of smoked salmon ++ Capers to finish

DIRECTIONS Vigorously whisk egg yolks and lemon juice together in stainless steel bowl until thickened and doubled in volume. Place bowl over saucepan containing barely simmering water (make sure bottom of pan doesn’t touch the water). Continue to whisk until sauce is thick. Split English muffin & toast Fill 10-inch nonstick skillet 1/2 full water adding 2 Tbs. vinegar. Bring to a slow boil. Gently break eggs 1 at a time into water taking care not to break them. Cook eggs 3 1/2 minutes until whites set, yolk still soft and remove with slotted spoon. Place a piece of smoked salmon on top of muffin, followed by poached egg, spoon a tablespoon of Hollandaise Sauce over each egg, Garnish with capers. For a twist, substitute sausage gravy for hollandaise and ham for smoked salmon.
