While Ryan uses his hands to create his masterpieces, Jessica uses her eyes to spot the trends that we will all want in our homes. Together, they've created a storefront that is as hip as it is diverse.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF SPORTS TO PRODUCE A HEALTHY SMILE NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A DEDICATED DENTIST AND A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE WHEN THEY JOIN FORCES TO COMBAT DENTAL DISEASE AMONG UNDERSERVED YOUTH. The results can be far-reaching. Ask the participants in TeamSmile. TeamSmile originated from the combined efforts of William Busch, D.D.S. of North Kansas City Dental, and Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt in response to a national news story about a young boy in Maryland dying from an untreated tooth abscess. 22

The story compelled Busch to take action. He enlisted the aid of Colquitt, whose mother was a dental assistant, to create a program in alliance with professional sports teams to provide area children with free dental care. That program became known as TeamSmile. For

TeamSmile board of directors, his decision to collaborate with Busch was an easy one. “Overall health begins with the mouth," Colquitt says. "You can’t choose your smile. For many of these kids, dental work changes their lives. If you can improve someone’s appearance, they’re going to be more confident, more likely to try new things and more likely to succeed. There’s a lot of power in a healthy smile.” “A healthy smile impacts getting a job and even meeting a life partner," adds Busch. "A smile can affect a child socially and academically. We want to give every child the opportunity to be the best they can be. TeamSmile enables us to do that.” Twelve years after what began as a single health event with the Chiefs, the program has expanded nationally to other NFL, NHL, NBA, PGA and MLB teams. To date, TeamSmile has impacted more than 25,000 children through 150 programs, offering $15 million worth of free dental care and oral hygiene education. “In 2017, we successfully ran 19 programs through partnerships with NFL, MLB, and MLS teams,” says TeamSmile Executive Director John McCarthy. outreach, we provided free dental care to almost 4000 children. Three of those 19 programs included KC teams: the Chiefs, the Royals, and Sporting KC. In 2018, we have commitments for 23-28 plans including the Super Bowl.” “There are a lot of dental clinics and medical clinics,” observes McCarthy, “What’s unique about this experience is it’s held at a major sports arena or stadium. There are professional athletes, coaches, team mascots, cheerleaders, face painters, and more. It’s more like a dental tailgate. We provide the dental treatment needed while creating a lifetime experience for these children. Coming to these stadiums is a cool thing in and of itself; it takes the fear out of going to the dentist. Here they go home with the dental work and education and walk away feeling

No matter what kind of story the player has about dentistry, the kids will listen and remember.” TeamSmile can treat up to 300 children at each dental screening. The visit includes X-rays and dental treatment followed by oral education and a fluoride varnish treatment. Participants are referrals from Boys and Girls Clubs, homeless shelters, community liaisons, and schools. Each event requires 14-16,000 pounds of equipment and supplies. A semi-truck wrapped in the TeamSmie logo transports the equipment. Onsite volunteers include 15-20 dentists, a similar number of dental hygienists, and assistants, as well as volunteers from Henry Schein, who set up the equipment and handle any equipment problems. Every child leaves TeamSmile with a toothbrush, Colgate toothpaste, and dental floss, says McCarthy. “While that may seem trivial to some, to these children, it’s everything. Some children comment they have a toothbrush, but ‘my sister, brother and I all share it.’ We give them extra bags to take home.” All agree they walk away from each event knowing they’ve made a difference in the community. “Walking away, aside from being exhausted,“ shares Busch, who serves as lead dentist at all the events, "is a feeling of accomplishment and giving back to the community. We use the power of sports to make it memorable. I always say, 'Smiles warm the heart, sports inspire the spirit and together, change lives.’” TeamSmile is a perfect example of this. When I walked into a classroom on a balmy January day with Lachowitzer, students all rose and greeted her by name. She greeted them in Latin, and they responded in kind. In composition books, they kept track of lessons in history, science, and grammar. A quick look at a textbook reveals something more akin to a novel, with historical events told in story form, involving children instead of summarizing the facts and figures. And judging by the excitement in the students' eyes, this sort of curriculum is working. "Kids learn best by hearing stories, parables if you will. That's why Jesus used them in the Bible. They work," says Lachowitzer. "We are training students to be learners. We want kids to think, to answer long questions. On our tests, we don't do multiple choice. Instead, we do short answer or essay questions with a few true/ false," says Lachowitzer. The teachers at St. Charles Borromeo Academy are also revitalized. Sherri Asta has taught for nearly 20 years but says that the new approach has reignited her interests and pushed her to find new and inventive ways to bring her students into lessons. As we spoke, she was messaging a friend in Denmark to find primary sources for a unit on Vikings. Clearly, the classical model is pushing even the educators further than they've gone before. And it seems to be working. Since the announcement of the curriculum change, the school gained 40 students with more coming in all the time. Lachowitzer says that parents want to make sure they are prepared from high school, and cementing the basics is helping them to do just that. As part of the Diocese of St. Joseph, St. Charles Borromeo Academy is one of six elementary schools in the Northland. However, it is the only school that has chosen to pursue the classical model for its students. As the excitement for the model grows, Lachowitzer says that the commitment to personalized teaching will remain intact. "We won't return to the days where 900 students walked through these halls. We want to keep small class sizes and turn out amazing scholars. I want to have a waiting list for each class. I want St. Charles Borromeo Academy to be a destination for those that value education and the fostering of valued citizens," she says. As St. Charles Borromeo Academy continues to focus on the building blocks of education based in logic and reasoning, they seem to be doing just that. Chef Anita Moore certainly does, and her 10-monthold baby, Smithville's Soiree New Orleans Bistro is a testament to that. Although born and raised in Kansas City, her roots are in the south, and after many visits back to Louisiana, she fell in love with the cuisine. Years later, Soiree was born. Soiree New Orleans Bistro could easily be classified as a 'cajun' or 'creole' joint, but that would be too pat of a descriptor. Moore has taken the classics--po' boys, red beans and rice, jambalaya, and given them the respect they deserve and a little side of KC love when needed. If you're looking for a freshly fried oyster, Soiree is the place, along with crawfish, frog legs, alligator and catfish, all available in the towering Soiree Bayou basket. Warning: do not attempt to eat this alone. It will defeat you. Don't miss out on some of the standout dishes, located on the appetizer menu. The deep-fried deviled eggs are practically a meal on their own, filled with pimento cheese, deep fried and then topped with pulled pork, remoulade, and pickled onion. And for another hit of creole greatness, don't miss the boudin balls. Although far from the traditional texture of boudin sausage, these fist-sized balls are comprised of pork shoulder boiled down with the holy trinity and jalapeno, then finely chopped and mixed with rice, then fried in crispy, crunchy cornmeal breading. The resulting dish is smoky, savory, and oh-so-indulgent, topped with spicy remoulade sauce. And don't worry, dessert lovers. The dessert menu features everyone's favorite beignets alongside a caramel dipping sauce, as well as other options like a sweet potato cheesecake parfait. You may not need to go back to New Orleans. Smithville is so much closer.

“The location is so great,” she says. “And we love the kind of rebirth that’s happening in North Kansas City, with all of the fun new breweries, restaurants and just cool stuff that’s opening.” The store sells a variety of handmade furniture built by Ryan, including one of their best-sellers, a mid-century hickory hexagon side table. Many of his pieces prominently feature reclaimed wood, salvaged from barns or other buildings across Missouri and Kansas. While many items for sale aren’t locally made, Tyler Kingston does feature the work of a number of local artists and sellers, including some live-edge furniture by a fellow North Kansas City craftsman, stained glass sun catchers, vintage men’s clothing from Cable and Company, and Kansas City-themed prints from local designer Ryan Hubbard. In addition to choosing what artists to partner with, Jessica can also be found out and about on Mondays and Tuesdays picking vintage goods to add to the store’s selection. While many of the pieces could fall into an industrial or mid-century modern category, she says it’s more about finding those pieces that reflect their character—whether they’re decades old or brand new. “It’s really just paying attention to trends, colors that are coming out, things we personally like,” she says. “We’re loving brass fixtures and brass everything, so we’re stocking a lot of brass coming up in the spring.” With three employees on the team, Jessica and Ryan also rent out their downtown studio for photo shoots and just recently wrapped up a large project for Lee Jeans, building tables and shelving and providing vintage goods for the company’s denim lab. The couple hopes to eventually add a second retail location and further expand their furniture options. But for now, Mead says the store is in a good place, and they’re excited about the potential. “Everyone we work with, from the city to our landlord to the people who live here, have been so welcoming, and just easy to work with,” she says. “It’s been awesome.”

Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. Dark Chocolate Truffles WHAT YOU NEED

1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting WHAT YOU DO

1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate. Roll in cocoa powder until coated and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Recipe from FoodNetwork.com.
