HAPPY HOLIDAYS, DEAR READERS! It's the most wonderful time of the year around my house--I'm already behind on the baking but the shopping is going well and I'm anticipating lots of family time as the big event draws close. This year, I have even more to celebrate. My daughter, Indra Selene, was born on November 1, just in time to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with the family! She's a sweetheart and while the sleepless nights aren't much fun, the little smiles and cuddles are worth every waking moment. The December issue is all about celebration. No matter what beliefs you hold, December will give you an opportunity to celebrate. In our feature story, we take a peek into three Northlanders' Christmas wish lists, including my own! (My husband is just glad to have it ahead of time this year!) And if you're looking for another way to celebrate, do as the Icelanders do--give books on Christmas Eve and spend the evening reading in cozy comfort. Our Page Turners article has seven suggestions for books to dive into this winter. The holidays are also a time to be generous wtih our time and our resources. I hope that we will all find a way to make sure someone else's holiday is merry and bright in some small way. Harvesters is always grateful for donations but there are many other worthy organizations that appreciate your generosity. No matter who you choose, your gift is appreciated. I hope that as this year comes to a close, we all take a moment to reflect and be grateful for the bounty which we have been given. Celebrate: Imaging For Women's Survivor Event Imaging for Women hosted their 4th Annual Breast Cancer Survivor Celebration on September 21st at their Northland location. This yearly gathering honors their patients who have battled breast cancer and won, as well as the families and friends who support them. Guests enjoyed food from Chuy’s Mexican, sweets from Nothing Bundt Cakes, a pink champagne toast and a butterfly release.

Theatre and the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival have formed Theatre Alliance Kansas City, a community wide coalition, which will be dedicated to building awareness and increasing engagement with both theatre audiences and artists. The alliance will offer membership to all metro area theatres, professional, non-professional and academic. The inaugural Board of Directors includes Angela Gieras and Jason Chanos (KC Rep), Cynthia Levin (Unicorn Theatre), Joette Pelster and Jeff Church (Coterie Theatre), John Rensenhouse (KCAT) and Sidonie Garrett of HASF. Levin notes, “Most of the theatres in this town have been working together informally for years. We now come together as a strong alliance with a collective voice to advocate for all theatre, and help market more effectively." Theatre Alliance Kansas City will increase its membership and presence within the next year. Plans include a web landing page, cross-promotion with increased exposure and creating a public celebration of all Kansas City theatre involving and including 14

A few years later, after her mother showed worsening symptoms of dementia, Rufener moved her once again, this time to the Memory Support community of Senior Star at Wexford Place, a retirement and assisted living facility in the Northland. Rufener is executive director of Wexford Place and accustomed to helping families navigate the emotional waters of moving an elderly parent out of the home. But her experience didn’t make her own decision less challenging. “Intellectually, when you work in the field, you know this is what needs to happen,” she says. “But it’s always different when it’s you personally because then you’re dealing with layers of emotions with the changes you see in your parents.” Rufener’s mother was still dealing with the recent

She now serves as “front desk supervisor,” helping staff with administrative tasks. “She has absolutely loved that,” Rufener says. “She’s taught some of them how to write shorthand, she helps them with filing—activities she can connect to that help her feel important and feel like she’s contributing. They call her ‘boss.’” For many residents with progressed dementia, Rufener emphasizes the continued importance of a family connection, something she especially appreciates now that she’s so close to her mother on a daily basis. “It’s nice to be able to just pop in, even if it’s just for five minutes,” she says. “Just being able to share a few moments together and let her know I’m thinking of her and love her. Families struggle when a loved one has dementia . . . but it’s really not important if they remember your name; what’s important is they know you’re somebody who loves them and cares for them.”
