The Northland is booming. North Kansas City is exploding with new businesses. The infrastructure is laid for thousands of new homes in the Twin Creeks development. And what is fueling all of this fire? Coffee!

I've always been a coffee fan and I prefer my beans dark and my brews strong. When I started drinking craft beer several years ago, coffee beers and stouts that inherently incorporated the flavors of coffee where my gateway into the wider world of beer. This issue celebrates both of those beverages so that from sun up to sun down, you can enjoy life with your beverage of choice. Meet Alex Merrell of Hammerhand Coffee. His original location collapsed but that didn't deter him. Now he's gaining more fans by the day at this corner coffee shop on Liberty's historic square. Local favorite Headrush Roasters is growing as it opens location number two at the Shops at Briarcliff Village. Who needs Starbucks when you have local brews? For those that need a little more than caffeine, Colony KC and Calibration Brewery in North Kansas City have what you crave with cocktails and beer that incorporate coffee. And if you need to blow off a little steam, head to Draftcade where you can kill aliens or eat fruit while enjoying one of the 60 taps available. Coffee has always been my vice but now I enjoy it more than ever as I feed my daughter breakfast and sip the first half of my cup hot and the second cold, hours later. I try to rationalize that it's the best of both worlds--the jolt of hot java and the refreshment of cold brew in the same cup!

The competition was a record breaking event with more than 2,000 entries from more than 280 entrants. More than 100 categories were open and judged by 25 aesthetic and 25 technical judges. Shatto Milk Company was awarded second place in the “Butter with flavor added – all milk category ” – for their Garlic Butter. AFTER THE LIGHTS: THE ONLY FRIDAY NIGHT SPORTS INJURY CLINIC IN THE NORTHLAND For the second consecutive season, athletes who get hurt playing a Friday night sport will have a Northland option for immediate healthcare: After the Lights, a Friday night clinic offered at Liberty Hospital Urgent Care Shoal Creek, 8300 N. Church Road, across from Liberty Walmart. The only clinic of its kind in the Northland, After the Lights is offered 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. every Friday night, now through October 20. Injured athletes will see a physician -- without going through an emergency room or waiting until Monday; an orthopedic surgeon also will be available. In its first season last fall, injured athletes from across the Northland were able to visit the After the Lights clinic and not only receive immediate care but also have a plan of follow-up care when they walked out the door. NORTHLAND CHURCH HOLDS FREE TEACHER SUPPLY GIVEAWAY Tightening budgets have made it harder than ever for Kansas and Missouri educators to keep their classrooms stocked with the tools they need to do their jobs. A church in Kansas City North does its best to help by giving them supplies for free, no strings attached. North Heartland Community Church held its 4th Annual Teacher Supply Giveaway on July 27, inviting area teachers to “shop” for free supplies for the upcoming school year. supplies, art supplies, books, and other classroom necessities for weeks, in anticipation of large crowds. 675 teachers attended the event, while many were unable to attend due to flooding in the area. Teachers can continue to access supplies though the church's resource request system. “Teachers give so much of themselves to our communities,” says Horn. “So many of them are forced to pay for classroom supplies out of their own pockets. DRAFT Hot Spot

ell, it's finally happened--we've reached the point in the technological revolution where we have started going

backwards. For a society that has nearly any information or gaming opportunity in their pocket in the form of a cell phone, many now long for the days of old school entertainment, the kind that was very, very stationary. Hence the rise of the arcade bar, of which Draftcade, located in Zona Rosa Shopping Center, is one of the newest. The idea of an arcade bar isn't new by any means, as many

have popped up in the nation and even in the city. There are now two North of the river with this summer's Tapcade NKC opening. Draftcade, is a sister company of its next door neighbor, the Improv Comedy Club. While it seems like a simple concept--get a bunch of vintage arcade games and set up bar, Draftcade does the concept justice and has a surprisingly tasty menu to boot. While the room is dominated by the more than 70 arcade games including vintage favorites like PacMan, pinball and skeeball, there is plenty of table seating and bar space facing the 60 rotating taps. Beer and video games go together when your target audience is the aptly named "Oregon Trail Generation". For those hop-averse gamers, there's a full list of cocktails with video game-centric names as well, although all lean heavily to the sweeter side of the spectrum. All this is fun (and, well, games) but Draftcade also offers a surprisingly good menu. The menu skews toward the junk food theme but does so in a creative and well-executed way. On a sleepy Sunday afternoon, I ventured in to sample the wares. Kids are allowed on the weekends before 5 p.m with an adult. After that, Draftcade is 21 years old and up. We started with some appetizers. The menu has several options since the concept lends itself to snacking. Our choices, the Fried Mac and Cheese and the BLT Tots were both crowd pleasers. The mac and cheese included jalapenos in the mix so there was a pleasant bite but not too much for most palates. The standout, though, was the BLT tots, which was essentially a fried potato salad. The mound of tots was crispy and piping hot with a veritable mountain of crisp shredded lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and hearty lardons of bacon. It was indulgent and fun at the same time. To counteract my sins, I opted for a salad as a main course. CONTINUED >

The grilled caesar salad was executed perfectly--lightly charred romaine hearts added smoky flavor to the classic fare. Topped with Caesar IPA dressing and perfectly cooked blackened shrimp, it was satisfying and (nearly) guilt free. My dining companion threw guilt to the wind and dove into the Porky's Revenge. The sandwich was laughably large with pulled pork, candied bacon, and smoked ham piled high. It was dressed with blueberry habanero BBQ sauce, jalapeno cole slaw, and onion straws. With a side of fries, it was easily two meals. Although the BBQ sauce was a tad too sweet for my taste, the overall result was balanced with a little sweet and a little spice in each bite. For those with more gustatorial endurance, there are deep fried Twinkies and Oreos on offer, but sadly, we had to tap out. There's plenty more to try with smoked vegetables of the day, a maple pork glazed pork donut, and a Stone Smoked Porter Chicken sandwich for another visit. Draftcade isn't reinventing the wheel but they are making sure that the wheel rolls well and has a good time. And the allowance of children during specific hours sets it apart from many of its competitors. After all, don't the parents that want to go to an arcade bar want to show their offspring what life was like in the 'good old days' of quarters and quickly erased high scores? Of course they do, because nostalgia, like BLT tots, is best when shared. very image we have of the American Cowboy starts with the Chisholm Trail, that 800-mile path from roughly San Antonio,

TX to Abilene, KS that brought millions of head of cattle from Texas to the railroad in Abilene to be shipped east. This is where the Hollywood image of cowboys began - in that 20 year period between 1867 and the late 1880s when young men, often boys, managed massive herds of cows. It’s been 150 years since that first herd of cattle trundled along through the open prairie following a path first traveled by Native Americans. Communities big and small all along the trail are celebrating as wildly as those original cowboys did on pay day when they would roar into the dusty streets of a Kansas town with all of the energy and excitement of the Old West. A number of activities take place over Labor Day weekend, but before your celebration gets underway, it’s important to understand why the trail was so important in American history. A newspaper reporter in Abilene in the late 19th century explained it this way: “The wealth of an empire passed over the trail, leaving its mark for decades to come.” During the Civil War, it was impossible to ship longhorn cattle from Texas to major cities in the North. By the end of the war, the cattle had multiplied into the millions and were nearly worthless at $2 a head. But in the East, cattle were selling at $40 a head. Yet, war had destroyed the rail lines needed to ship cattle. But the train tracks were in good shape in Kansas, specifically Abilene, so that was where entrepreneur Joseph McCoy, in 1867, built pens and sent notice to Texans that this is where they could sell their cattle at a profit. In the first five years, an estimated 3 million cattle arrived in Abilene via the Chisholm Trail. So, the Chisholm Trail was an exceptional endeavor that helped heal the economic wounds of the Civil War. And in Kansas, the trail dramatically boosted the economy and the population of this still relatively new-to-the-Union state.

COW TOWNS

In the 1860s, Oklahoma was still Indian Territory, thus the trail through Oklahoma offered above average risks for cowboys and their herds. When they finally crossed the state line into Kansas, it was time to relax, kick up their heels, and blow off some steam. CALDWELL

Just across the state line, Caldwell, Kansas, took the brunt of that first wave of raucous behavior. Nicknamed the Border Queen, Caldwell is a true cow town. Guided tours today reveal a 400-yard wide swath of ruts where millions of hooves pounded the ground for the better part of two decades. a year, this eclectic, yet simple gathering place at 22 N. Main Street in Liberty, is already on the short list of elite coffee houses of Kansas City. Hammerhand Coffee’s recipe for success is anything but a secret. At its base is an old Title building and a local guy with a graphic arts degree who’s also a skilled barista. Add a passion for connecting people through quality and excellent coffee. Throw in some technology, homemade syrups, a bit of alcohol and a slate of delectable bites; then top it off with a name that raises eyebrows and after a single visit embeds itself in your memory forever. This is where owner/operator Alex Merrell’s vision meets reality. Honored, but not surprised that Hammerhand stands out from other coffee shops, Merrell says that was his intent from the day he first began thinking of getting into the business. He wasn’t going for a coffee place that was known just for its coffee. It was always about the overall coffee shop experience. Merrell gained expertise as a barista at Ultimo Coffee in Philadelphia, a neighborhood favorite that snagged the #1 spot on the list of America’s Best Coffee Shops four short years ago. Merrell observed what made the place tick and why customers kept coming back. The formula was simplicity mixed with a little bit of love.

It was at Ultimo that Merrell watched how people connected over coffee, how friendships were made, problems were solved and business deals were struck. People’s lives were usually better when they left than when they came in. Or, so it seemed. Merrell liked the thought of being a part of that. With the arrival of their first child, Merrell, a Lee’s Summit native, and his wife moved to the Kansas City area to be closer to family. The move from Philly only served to heighten his desire to open a coffee shop that could offer a similar experience to the one he left behind, one that would appeal to locals as a third place to be between home and work. Merrell, along with some business partners and an investor, looked north to Historic Liberty Square for the location of choice for Hammerhand Coffee. Liberty presented itself as an area where the group could invest and observe firsthand the impact of their business on the community, as well its overall performance. Though enjoying success, Merrell never loses sight of his original goal to distinguish his business through attention to customer service and consistency. “I always tell my staff Hammerhand Coffee is a people company first and a coffee company second. Stout Chocola te Brownies

INGREDIENTS

• ½ cup stout beer • 1/4 cup espesso or strong cold brew • 10 ounces 60% bittersweet chocolate chips • 1 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • 3 eggs • 1 cup flour INSTRUCTIONS

• Preheat oven at 250 degrees F. Prepare a 9" X 9" baking pan with parchment paper allowing the paper to hang over the edges and spray with cooking spray. • Bring stout to a boil and reduce to simmer and cook for about 10 minutes or until reduced to ¼ cup. Set aside to cool. • In a double boiler or a small bowl atop a small saucepan filled with 1 inch of water, melt chocolate chips and butter over high heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. • Pour melted chocolate into a medium bowl and cool slightly. Add sugar, vanilla, salt and stout and mix well with a whisk or wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time, mixing just until combined before adding the next egg. • Fold flour into mixture and pour into baking pan. Bake for one hour or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool in pan for 2 hours or overnight to firm up for best cutting. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY 50
