I'm jealous of the parents pouring over supply lists and fussing over pencil cases. I can't WAIT to be able to do that for my daughter but we (thankfully, in some ways) have quite a way to go before I have the pleasure of going Back to School shopping.

I was and ever will be, a nerd. I loved school. I earned good grades, read without ceasing and looked forward to each school year. There is nothing like the end of August (it was the beginning of September in my day!) to bring butterflies to my stomach in anticipation of all the things that I would learn, the field trips I would take, and the new friends I would make. And now, in the age where being a nerd is cool (hello and thank you STEM!) I can't wait for my daughter to have the same giddy anticipation. In the meantime and the next four years, I'll just have to be content to read to her each day and watch her eager mind soak up her surroundings. This month we have a little bit for everyone. decade is a long time in the restaurant business--long enough to know how to do things right. That can certainly be said for Em

The passion project of brothers Sam and Nick Silvio, Em Chamas has set the standard for tableside rodizio service since 2007. Most are familiar with the concept--Em Chamas offers 12-16 different cuts of meat, featuring beef, pork, lamb, and chicken. Their beef is 30-day aged certified Angus beef, so quality starts before the skewers ever hit the rotisserie. Once they do, all proteins are cooked to perfection and served tableside, cut to order. Along with the hot and cold bar, the rodizio service is their trademark and a must for any meat lover. But what happens when you don't want a huge meal? I mean, sure, you could stop after one portion of top sirloin stuffed with Provolone cheese, but why? The steak is thinly shaved and topped with caramelized onion, provolone cheese and topped with a savory chimichurri sauce on a crispy baguette. Along with a pile of impossibly thin and crispy house potato chips, this sandwich will satisfy even the heartiest appetite. For those that need salad but don't want to be too virtuous, the Caprese ($8) is a great choice. Cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella lounge in a basil pesto sauce with a drizzle of balsamic gastrique. It's simple but tasty. And if you find that you miss the traditional flavors of the rodizio, then you can choose cuts of your favorites to order a la carte. Add a side of the meaty feijoada (black beans stewed with pork) and rice and you'll have a perfectly sized dinner without the need for a nap afterwards.
The lounge is also a great place to check out the extensive Caipirinha list, featuring the original (cachaca, lime, and sugar), as well as fruit versions (I prefer the passion fruit) and riffs on the cocktail using different spirits such as sake, vodka, and even limoncello. If lime and sugar aren't your thing, then the Em-tinis list will catch your fancy. Don't worry beer drinkers, you have plenty of choices, both local and Brazilian. There's nothing like a completely indulgent meal like the Rodizio experience but sometimes it's nice to be able to pop in, have a few nibbles, sip a cocktail and enjoy a little music. ax Groove, 66, slides into a banquette at First Watch in North Kansas City. His blonde-haired daughter Jazmine, 13, cozies next to him. She orders a stack of chocolate chip pancakes and he orders his usual. This father-and-
daughter scene is heartwarming on the surface. Between bites of breakfast, Groove recounts a life that prompts him to break into laughter, express humility, proclaim gratitude, and shed tears. Most people know Groove, born Brian Hohmann, as a smooth jazz pianist. “I can write and play different styles of jazz, but I wanted to play something funky and more melodic,” says Groove, who resides in Gladstone. “I’m one of the pioneers of smooth jazz. Smooth jazz is toe-tapping music with attitude.” He hums a few bars in a honeyed voice with a warmth that won’t be found on a mobile phone ringtone. It’s catchy and easy to connect with the melody and beat.

he Vietnam conflict is not an easy subject for most veterans to discuss. Scott Blaney can attest to that. The 30-year Army veteran spent time in Vietnam and in Desert Storm. Although he doesn’t talk much
about his experiences, the wounds are there, as his wife, Carol, can attest. Healing those wounds and the other effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is the mission of Patriot Outreach and one application of Join-Up, a program run by the ‘Horse Whisperer’ Monty Roberts and intended to teach gentle, effective alternatives to violence and force. COO and CFO of Patriot Outreach, Jack Shafferman, Army Colonel (Ret.), saw the benefits of the Join-Up program first hand and has facilitated area veterans to take part in the program through the financial support from Patriot Outreach. “Patriot Outreach has partnered with Monty's Learning Center to provide instructors, courses for training equine operations, standards of operation, and skill PTSD workshop for our warriors. We first heard about it six years ago. After visiting and checking out the program, we really liked the program Monty was doing. We provide funds for warriors with PTSD to go to the ranch for help. As one recent attendee said, ‘You experience firsthand the use of non-verbal language with horses, a proven coping strategy to combat daily stress and PTSI’, ” Shafferman says.

Therese School is living his passion and the Sons of the American Revolution took notice, awarding him the American History Teacher of the Year Award for his outstanding efforts to make history come alive for his students. Get to know this Star Teacher! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL WHEN YOU WERE A KID?
My favorite subject in school as a child was History. It was at Park College, though, when my interest in History really grew with the opportunity to learn from an eccentric professor. This is when I realized this History was good stuff and began to see the importance of knowing about the past! WHICH SCHOOL SUPPLY DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO BUYING MOST?
Nowadays, my favorite school supply to buy is Lysol or antibiotic hand soap, although I'm always adding to my collection of ties (170+). WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF A FUN WEEKEND NIGHT?
My wife and I love to go to O'Malley's in Weston and listen to some great Irish Pub Rock music. Great atmosphere and fantastic bands! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE NORTHLAND?
Our favorite thing about the Northland is that we have everything we'd want to see, do or eat and it's still not too congested. We have a tradition of getting pizza every Friday night at Pizza Shoppe, that I started when I was in college in 1975. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF CLASS?
My hobbies are coaching basketball and volleyball at St. Therese School. WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY?
Barbara is my wife of 38 years. We have one daughter, Jill, a nurse in Dallas, Texas, who is married with one child, Ethan. Our son, William, has spent 17 years in Army, currently on 7th tour, and is married with one child, Amelia. WHAT ARE YOUR GUILTY PLEASURES?
My wife would tell you I have two guilty pleasures, watching the news (I've been a "news/political junkie" since middle school), and watching old westerns, T.V. shows, and movies. They are a reminder of a simpler time and the good guys always win.
