hat's right, it's our Anniversary issue once again! I've had the pleasure and privilege of learning about the great stories of the Northland since just after I moved to the area myself. It's been a great crash course in the best places to eat, shop, and spend time with my loved ones. I'm a particular fan of the Waggin' Trailz Dog Park and the Line Creek trail but those are just the tip of the iceberg. The Northland is different than the rest of the KC metro area. Our publisher, Carey Welsch, calls it 'God's country' and I'm inclined to agree! I don't believe in pitting neighborhoods against each other but our easy access to the arts and culture Downtown and our bucolic residential areas and parks are the perfect blend of city and country. There's not much that's out of reach in the Northland and what we lack is rapidly being built (most likely in North Kansas City!). In this issue, we are celebrating summer as well. School's out and it's time to have a little fun. There are so many places to do that but in this issue, we get to know three distinct destinations—Velo Garage and Tap House, We Rock the Spectrum Kids Gym, and Chicken N Pickle. Between these three destinations, there's truly something for everyone. Thanks for reading along with me all these years. Thanks for writing me. Thanks for saying hello at the grocery store. It's so nice to see people that grace our pages in real life. And please keep the ideas coming! This magazine is full of your stories and we want to keep it that way. ear Readers, Our Summer Adventures issue is always one of my favorites and this year is no exception! We hope you enjoy this month’s issue, as we’ve taken delight in its creation. So, take as many vacations as possible. As the saying goes, “you can always make more money – but you can’t always make more memories”. Reward the kids with things they get to do more than the things they get to have. This teaches them that true happiness resides in experiences as opposed to possessions. Relish the summer warmth and embrace the opportunities before you! As I reflect upon the last 12 months, I feel abundantly blessed. From our publication’s partners (who make these issues possible) to the non-profits who do so much for our area’s needs, and to my Editor, Rachel, who tirelessly works to plug hyperlocal content on what it means to be a Northlander . . . thank you! I wanted to be able to sit in my cycling kit, drink a beer, and feel normal. My wife and I travel a lot. We saw these shops in other locations and decided to do it in Kansas City.” Initially,

VeloWagon, a converted 1969 Volkswagen bus equipped with four beer taps that also served as a mobile bike repair and delivery vehicle. Sutter and Borden operated the mobile business for 18 months before committing to a brick-and-mortar shop last spring. They still use the bus for marketing and mobile beer and bike service at events. Now, Sutter and Borden share responsibilities for daily operations at the storefront. As the business matures, they are actively “building the brand and focusing on growth.” “We want to ensure the people can bike safely and effectively,” says Sutter. “The more infrastructure there is for biking in the city, the better. The chicken may be healthy but it doesn't taste like it--in a good way. There are four seasonings available--original, southwest, 7 chili, and jerk. Birds can be purchased by the quarter or half, white meat or dark, or just in batches of wings. I opted for wings to try the Southwest and Jerk flavors and both hit with a fury. The wings were crispy and fresh and while both were good, the jerk was my favorite. For those that want something more portable, there's a full selection of sandwiches. The fried chicken is served on a fluffy bun and topped with hot sauce, lettuce and spicy slaw. All sandwiches come with a side--I chose fries. Although they were hand cut, they were short and gave the appearance of being the odds and ends. They tasted good though and were the only slightly odd moment on the menu. If a salad is more your style, check out the NKC Powerbowl. This hearty salad includes farro and quinoa on top of local greens. Feta, beets, pistachios, and cranberries top the bowl and a blueberry vinaigrette finishes it off. Add chicken if you're really hungry. I was and I didn't regret it. There are other sides to choose from of course, including tater tots, cat head biscuits, beets, spicy slaw, BBQ beans, or Brussel Sprouts. The Sprouts were a hit, roasted and warm and topped with crispy bacon bits and parmesean. Of course, not everyone loves rotisserie chicken. Not a problem! Chicken N Pickle also invites food trucks to pull into their mid-restaurant alley and set up shop. Crooks says they've had taco trucks, Filipino cuisine and a host of others for different events. Food trucks are typically there on weekends but Crooks says he hopes to have them 7 days a week. Not a fan of Pickleball? Don't worry, there are plenty of yard games and life sized versions of games that we all love--Jenga, Connect Four and even a giant Battleship. Play a round of bags while you wait for your open court slot. Or reserve a court and enjoy an hour of uninterrupted play. Chicken N Pickle is even branching out to a more peaceful practice--yoga. Currently, Yoga on the Lawn only happens on Sundays but they are planning on adding Saturday as well. Yoga is free, taught by instructor Julia Cloud. Bring your own mat. Chicken N Pickle has something for everyone, from a rooftop deck complete with Boulevard bar to a game of bags to a fast paced game of pickleball doubles with your new best friends. No matter what you're looking for, there's a good chance you'll find it at Chicken N Pickle.

Whether they have significant debt or various types to pay off, they’re probably wondering where to start. They may appreciate some help understanding the interest rates and payments terms of each. It’s important that they know high interest rates increase the amount they owe – and their financial commitment – at an increasing rate over the years. Encourage them to pay down high interest or variable rate debt as quickly as possible. That way they can focus on their other financial goals, like saving for a down payment.

Encourage adult children to check their credit report at least annually and confirm that the information is accurate. Explain that establishing and maintaining good credit makes it easier to obtain a mortgage or auto loan.
