very year, Northland Lifestyle features a 'Wild Adventure' issue. For many, that means exotic travel or adrenaline pumping feats of derring-do. And for some, that means striking out on one's own, bucking the status quo and making their own path. In this issue, we have a bit of both!

In column A, we follow Diana Lambdin-Meyer as she warms up to sleeping in the buff on a bed of ice at Quebec's version of the Ice Hotel. Despite the assumptions of frost bite, our intrepid reporter returns with all her fingers and toes and one heck of a story to share at the next Polar Bear Plunge.
For a trip with a bit more weight, we follow Matt Staub as he treks to Ecuador to see first hand all the good that Kansas City-based not for profit Children International is doing across the globe. Traveling to a country where poverty is the rule rather than the exception was an eye opening experience for Staub and his worldview was expanded because of it. In column B, we talk to Santina Cessor, a working mother that refuses to accept the idea that business and family need to be separated. Her business, Threads Studio, tells brand stories for innovative companies, and she does it all while raising her toddler, Frank. Her determination and drive are a great example to her son and an example of what real focus looks like.

THE NORTHLAND'S ONLY INDOOR GOLF INSTRUCTION FACILITY EXPANDS IN PARKVILLE Due to Golf Academy of the Northlands’ popularity, professional instructor J.T. Watson is joining the team as an integral part of their continued growth. This indoor golf practice and training facility is the only ‘year round’ North of the river – conveniently located in Parkville Commons. With the objective to achieve and maintain golf skills both rehearsal process of a complex, full-length classical ballet. For the first time ever, Moscow Ballet has chosen a Northland-based organization to partner with, Ballet North. In an open audition held on October 5, Moscow Ballet's Alisa Bolotnikova selected dancers for the 62 cast positions needed to complete the giant cast needed for the Great Russian Nutcracker. Rehearsals are held at Ballet North; the performance is on November 26 at the Midland Theater. Seeking to make this a Northland-wide endeavor, in addition to Ballet North, dancers were present from Studio 320 in Kearney, Luzicka Ballet and Studio 10 from Liberty, and Diana's School of Dance in Platte City in the cast. For the past four years, each of the beneficiary charities has had a dedicated “day at the auction” -- a full day dedicated to raising funds for that organization both through the auction and donation opportunities for dealers, employees, and partners. They also have collected and donated sheets, pillows, towels, laundry detergent, diapers, wipes,

My plan was to attempt to sleep – naked no less - at the famous Ice Hotel in Quebec City, Canada. The Ice Hotel is exactly what the name implies – a hotel made of ice and snow. Technically, the hotel that I stayed in is called The Hôtel de Glace. The original Ice Hotel is in Sweden and since Quebec is a Frenchspeaking province and the hotel here is owned by a different company, we must call it The Hôtel de Glace. A visit to the Hôtel de Glace is a must-see-and-do during Winter Carnaval, a 60-plus year tradition in this Canadian province, but it is a separate entity. Starting about December 1, workers begin constructing forms for what will be four-feet thick walls of snow. Then up goes the arched doorways and the roof, all guided by skilled architects and inspected by appropriate agencies. Each season, the design varies, but usually, there are 40-plus guest rooms, a bar, lounge and a play area that includes such silliness an ice slide for adults. Everything is made of packed snow and ice, including the beds. The season ends with the spring thaw – obviously. You know it’s going to be an unusual night when you have to attend a mandatory training session before going to your room. That’s where we learned about the mummy sack/sleeping bag, the bathrooms, and other necessities. I wear glasses and was warned specifically not to take them off and place them on the night stand made of ice. The warmth of the glasses having been on my face would cause just enough melt for them to later freeze to the surface. I placed my glasses in my boots. The instructor advised us to first spend a good 15-20 minutes in the outdoor hot tubs in order to get our body temperatures as bubbly as possible. Then there was the mad dash across the courtyard back to the locker room. Did I mention it was 24-degrees below zero that night? Instructions we received before traveling to Quebec City recommended we NOT sleep in anything cotton, that we should bring synthetic sleepwear because such fabric traps less body heat that will transform into moisture and make us cold. The instructions said that most people stay warm and toasty by simply sleeping nude. Now my momma didn’t raise a complete turnip. Common sense says that on a 24-degree below zero night you layer up in as many clothes and blankets as you can find. But after a few very well proportioned hot toddies at the ice bar and discussing it with my friends during our bubbly hot tub time, we decided to embrace the whole “when in Rome” philosophy of travel. There are no doors on the ice hotel because of the potential for them to freeze shut. So once I pulled the heavy curtain across my breezy doorway, I quickly shucked my clothes into a neat pile in the bottom of my sleeping bag and dove in behind them. After just a minute or two of what could only be called ‘extreme shivering,’ I was amazed to realize that I was indeed becoming warm and toasty. Within another few minutes, I was sound asleep. Now the problem with a hotel made of frozen materials is the lack of indoor plumbing. A 3 a.m. nature call requires leaving the warmth of sleeping bag and darting back across a courtyard. Did I mention that it was 24-degrees below zero? The next morning as I returned to the heated common area where a hearty biscuit and gravy breakfast awaited, I was surprised to see a dozen or more people who didn’t make it through the night, who had abandoned the comfort of their block-of-ice bed to curl up on the floor of the one heated room in the compound. Ah, if the Olympics awarded gold medals for looks of Haughty Derision, I would be the Usain Bolt and Simone Biles of spending a night at the ice hotel. But let me tell you this – once is most definitely enough for this adventure.

ometimes seeing really is believing. Matt Staub, founder of marketing agency Proxima, snapped hundreds of photographs and recorded video once he and members of Children International set foot in Ecuador. Staub and the Children International (CI) team made their way to the nonprofit’s community centers in Guayquil and Quito, as part of a nine-day trip. Located high in the foothills of the Andean mountains, the centers are a safe haven to kids from dangerous environments. “The community centers are a safe place for kids. They are truly an oasis,” says Staub. “It’s not safe on the streets. We have a posse that travels with us. The streets are in disrepair. There are dirt roads and trash in impoverished neighborhoods. Homes are plywood shacks and brick.” Headquartered in south Kansas City, Children International serves nearly 300,000 impoverished children and youth in 10 countries around the world. Their community centers provide services such as medical and dental clinics, pharmacies, libraries, computer labs, activity spaces and multipurpose rooms. On this trip, Staub’s role involved teaming with CI to show the impact of its centers and
sponsorship by donors on the lives of children and the community. He began working with the nonprofit in January 2016, helping them refine a social media strategy and develop content. “I work directly with people in the field at CI,” says Staub. “I gather stories and media to share with CI’s audience from a first-person perspective. We take the audience along with us and tell a holistic story of CI’s work.” Staub and the CI team visited the centers in Guayquil and other towns. He conducted video interviews with people from the community as well as capturing imagery that shows their daily lives. Shortly after arrival, Staub, CI staff members, and teenagers broke CONTINUED >

into a game of soccer in the courtyard of the community center. Younger children drew boundaries with chalk for hopscotch. Preconceptions of Guayquil and its people formed and observed from the internet, a plane window, or tour bus change once interaction begins face-to-face. “I felt like I knew a lot, but I knew nothing until I was there. We apply our paradigm. You can’t imagine being lower on the hierarchy of needs,” says Staub. “I didn’t know anything until I spoke with the kids at the community centers. I have never been to a country like this.” In a country like this, poverty takes its toll on the health of children. Each year, 2 million children worldwide die from preventable diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia because families can’t afford treatment. Teaching children fundamental habits like hand washing can help prevent these diseases, two of the leading causes of death in children around the world. CI helps to break the cycle of poverty by enlisting people to sponsor a child and donate funds that go toward programs and activities that help these children. Community center team members work with volunteers and sponsors to help the children. From the outside, Staub understood the mission of CI and the importance of its efforts to change the quite real circumstances behind the statistics. Still, he wasn’t fully prepared for what to expect when he met the children for the first time. “The kids don’t know their circumstances,” says Staub. “They are excited and want to have fun. It puts perspective on the basic needs of life. We have a shared humanity. Their circumstances are drastic but not desperate. I met a 15-year-old girl that is pregnant and lives in a house that’s barely standing. It gives me hope to see their earnestness to keep pushing.” Recognizing this distinction as a storyteller is important. Staub’s intent was not to cast sad-eyed children in a stereotypical role––the voiceless kids seen on late-night commercials while brooding, heart-tugging messages and music deliver a call to action. “CI wants to tell their stories in an upbeat, hopeful way that is authentic,” says Staub. The youth served at CI’s centers learn about the fundamentals of hygiene and healthy habits. Students receive assistance with school fees,

uniforms, supplies, tutoring and scholarships so they may complete secondary education and advance further. Youth at all ages learn empowering skills of leadership, teamwork, and confidence. Kids eventually grow into teenagers that need assistance so they can gain employment and become future leaders in their community. CI helps them prepare with mock interviews, résumé writing, connecting with jobs, earning scholarships for college, or vocational training. Before arriving in Quito, Staub was not a sponsor of a child. That status changed when he met Jordin, a seven-year-old boy. “Many kids are looking for a father figure,” says Staub. “A sponsor has a one-toone relationship with a child.” After spending time with Jordin and seeing CI’s operations firsthand, Staub decided he would become Jordin’s sponsor. “After one week, I was thoroughly impressed with the centers, staff, and the kids,” he says. “They talk about outcomes and hope. I believe in the model.” CI’s sponsorship programs are “holistic and tailored to each country, community center, and people of all ages,” explains Staub. Jordin’s young age played a factor in Staub’s decision. “I wanted to meet a kid that I could go on a journey with.” Back in the United States, Staub is working with CI to create images, videos, and stories that explain the nonprofit’s purpose and role. He is also completing steps toward becoming Jordin’s sponsor. His belief in the impact of the organization and his personal commitment remains firm. “Given our luxuries, we can make an outsized difference through CI’s efficient programs for a small outlay,” says Staub. “The impact is pretty amazing. Everyone should travel to meet people at their community centers and see what CI does.” Even as he sifted through photographs and shared details of his first trip to Quito and Guayquil, Staub reiterated his decision to return to CI’s community centers in Ecuador. “I made lasting friendships,” he says. “You connect strongly with the community in a way a tourist can’t.” Visit Children.org to learn more about Children International’s community centers and sponsorship.

ebster Dictionary’s first full definition of the word adventure is, 'an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks'. How’s that for vague? Ask a friend what that means and she might say trying a new hairstyle; another might say real adventure requires a chunk of money and a plane ticket to someplace unpronounceable. Santina Cessor admits she doesn’t know exactly what adventure looks like for everyone. But for her, it’s about balance. A classically trained interior designer who made her mark in sales and then moved into the realm of design and architecture, Cessor owns Threads Studio, a boutique firm that specializes in brand positioning via storytelling. “The projects I worked on took years to complete,” says Cessor. “And I realized that the customer’s story would often get lost in the process. But it’s through story that businesses connect with clients. I’ve always been entrepreneurial at heart and I saw this as a perfect way to combine my love of writing with my love of design.” As a new mom, Cessor thought she’d found the elusive balance between home and work when her schedule allowed Fridays off and telecommuting on Tuesdays. Then she had an ah-ha moment. “I don’t know what that looks like for everyone,” she says. “But I do know that after I had [her son] Frank and went back to work, I thought I had it made. That first year of my son’s life, I did my best to be a mom when I was with him and a professional when I was on the clock.” She asked herself the question many working mothers have asked themselves: how can I fully concentrate on work when I’m away from my baby, and how can I fully concentrate on my baby when I’m away from work? 34

Instead of believing the only answer was to compartmentalize her roles as mother and designer, Cessor took a leap and created the reality she wanted. The result: a new business. Her partner: two-year-old Frank, who now accompanies her to meetings and spends his days with his mom, in her office. “He grows because he sees me grow,” she says. “There is such a thing as having it all. The key is figuring out what that means for you individually.” For Cessor it means digging into clients’ stories and bringing them to life, making time to volunteer in the community, and being fully present for Frank. “I think one of the biggest surprises was how easy it was to integrate the different parts of my life once I went out on my own. Being in charge of my own time and being able to control how I spend it, means I can take him to the park and come back to projects at non-traditional hours. The work benefits because I’m completely focused. I can get more done in three hours than I could in eight hours in an office.” One of her keys to success, she says, is constant communication with clients, usually online. “People are so understanding. They love that Frank is part of this and they know that the deadlines will be met because I’ve set that expectation.”

Another is relying on a strong network of support, including Cessor's husband, Frank Cessor. His support and belief in her goals has made her success possible. “I’m lucky because I have family who will help when I need help,” she says. “And I built a network of people who know and trust me and refer business my way. Very few people have had anything less than positive to say about Frank being with me and I know that those who do just aren’t my customers.” Perhaps the most important bit of advice she has to offer, though, has nothing to do with logistics, but everything to do with motivation. “Do what you love,” she says. Cessor’s love of storytelling started as a child. “I learned through stories and I even wrote short stories as a kid. It was so much easier for me to put what I thought on paper than to speak it,” she says. “It comes naturally for me, and it’s what I’m most excited about when I work with a client. To me, that’s the best of both worlds.” Cessor’s storytelling empowers clients to share the core values of their company with clients. It’s about integration: Cessor helps clients choose a shared vocabulary so that the message is always the same, whether a client is talking to a customer service rep or a C-Level executive. “It’s about making sure everyone is connected,” she says. 36

Cessor is a Northland native with a keen desire to give back in a way that leverages both her unique talents and her interests. “I am passionate about thoughtful development and local politics,” she says. She serves as a board member of Forward Kansas City, an organization focused on communicating Northland perspectives to Kansas City’s elected officials and ensuring that the Northland’s voice is heard at City Hall. “I want to start a conversation,” Cessor says. “There’s stigma attached to titles like ‘work at home mom’ and ‘momprenur’ and ‘stay at home mom.’ Childcare is expensive, and there’s a false perception that we will always have a job if we just follow the rules. What if we challenged that perception instead? That starts by questioning internally first, to define what balance means individually. And it means being empowered to follow your passion and take control of your own time. I don’t know what that looks like for everyone, but I do know that the first step is being willing to talk about it. There will be challenges,” says Cessor, “but that’s been one of the biggest rewards for me. The challenges are so worth it--being able to work and to be a mother, both full-time, and working both sides of my brain in that way makes me more dynamic, more engaged. Here’s the recipe we typically use: 1 bottle of Chambourcin wine 1 bottle of Red Cock-a-Doodle-Do wine 1 bottle of Nort wine 3 tsp. ginger 6-12 cloves 5 cinnamon sticks A dash of nutmeg Simmer on stove for 30 minutes. Serve in a mug with orange wedges. FAVORITE SPORT OR HOBBY THAT YOU PARTICIPATE IN— Anything on water (which is hard to do here in the winter). Some of our favorite activities are paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing and swimming.

astropub-noun; A public house that specializes in serving high-quality food. Although this may be the simple definition of the term gastropub, it has taken on a connotation of a trendy restaurant that surely features drinks served in mason jars and unironically bearded servers that resemble lumberjacks. Not true at the Northland's newest dining spot, the Crown Point Tavern. Instead, this new eatery that features a curated craft beer list keeps it simple--good food, executed well with friendly service. The Crown Point Tavern eased into the groove with a soft opening in September, picking up speed as owners Titus and Nate Bond got the hang of running their own place. There's a family vibe here-games like shuffle board are available and the Bond boys' mother greeted us on one evening. The space, which was formerly Marcy's Lounge, has been completely gutted and refinished, leaving the dingy feeling of Marcy's in the dust and debuting a bright interior decorated with vintage signs, vibrantly colored walls and reclaimed wood. Crown Point is aiming to be something different by any means necessary, a point proven by the note on the menu instructing diners that have issues or concerns to contact the ownership, going so far as to provide Titus Bond's personal cell phone number. Now that's dedication. Crown Point doesn't call itself a beer bar but beer is definitely a focus here. They feature a tap list full of Kansas and Missouri beers, and I don't just mean Boulevard. KC Bier Company, Tallgrass Brewing Company and Torn Label Brewing all grace the tap list, with a much more extensive bottle list available as well. Cocktails are featured too, but my eyes only saw the hops and malt. On my first visit with friends, we tried a few of the appetizers. The menu states that they prepare as much of the menu as possible in-house with fresh, local ingredients. That was clear in our meal. We started with some fairly standard bar fare--fried mushrooms
and pickles (each $6.50). Did they reinvent the wheel? No, but they turned out a great version of both. The breading was light and not too oil-sodden, accompanied by a horseradish sauce and a cucumber dill sauce, respectively. Both sauces were made in house. For entrees, my California chicken sandwich ($11) was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. The large breast filet was topped with ripe avocado, tomato, lettuce, Swiss cheese and bacon and served with house cut fries. A friend's pork tenderloin ($10.50) was similarly appetizing. It was not the plate sized affair that so many tenderloins are but it was perfectly seasoned and tender. The menu features appetizers, small plates, sandwiches, burgers, street tacos, and dinners. On a second visit, my husband found what may be my favorite dish--the pork belly Cubano ($11.50). This sandwich is hard to find on most Kansas City menus and when you do, it seldom resembles a real Cubano. But this is the real deal--braised pork belly is topped with smoked ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, hot sauce, mayo and mustard all pressed on a panini bun. The flavors of the marinated and braised pork belly mingle perfectly with the briny pickles and smokey ham. With a side of fresh cut fries, it was worth coming in for. My dinner that evening was a bit on the heavier side--I chose the fried chicken and biscuits dinner ($15). If you're craving fried chicken and you don't fancy a wait at Stroud's, then this is a very respectable substitute. Each dinner features a pan fried leg, thigh, and breast along with gouda mashed potatoes, an extremely buttery biscuit and a side of red beans and rice. If carbs are what you crave, this is the thing to order. The breading on the chicken was perfectly crisp and not greasy due to the fact that each order is fired fresh when placed. It may take 30 minutes but it's worth it. There are many other dishes I still need to try--chicken tinga street tacos anyone? And with reasonable prices and friendly service, I'm sure to be back to work my way through the entire menu. CONTINUED >
