h, October. Is there anything sweeter than savoring a pint of Cinder Block's Block IPA or a glass of local wine as you gather with friends around the bonfire? As the weather cools and we slow down a bit from the hectic pace of summer, a relaxing beverage certainly sounds like heaven. Our annual beer and wine issue inadvertently turned into an issue dedicated to the growth of North Kansas City! It's impossible to talk about craft beer in Kansas City without mentioning North Kansas City, as they have opened their arms and their unused warehouse and retail space to brewers and distillers alike. With three breweries, a distillery, a home brew shop, a movie theater with the best beer selection in town, and a beer and coffee bar all within walking distance of each other, NKC is rapidly becoming a destination for those that like to imbibe and indulge variety. We visit Colony Espresso and Beer in this issue. This beer bar and coffee shop combo would be at home in the Crossroads but instead nestles nicely on Armour Road. I have to admit, I have spent many an hour sipping beautifully crafted lattes while typing away on various assignments there. With comfortable seating, a ping pong table and muted televisions for the sports minded, this hybrid bar/coffee hang out is just what the city needed. In addition to beer, we also meet the Shannons, the husband and wife duo behind Restless Spirits Distilling. Their four spirit lineup is doing things a little differently, creating unique aromatic blends for their highly sought after gin and blending their whiskey just like the Irish do. They've committed to making spirits that stand out in the crowded liquor store shelves. After what seems like an interminably long nine months of pregnancy, I'm excited to try some of the new beers and spirits available in the Northland. With the wealth of talent in our local businesses, it would be a crime not to partake! So raise a glass and try something new this month!

CLAY PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR NOMINATED FOR STATE AWARD The Missouri Association of Public Administrators (MAPA) has nominated Clay County Public Administrator, Debra L Gwin, NCG, for the 2016 Fred Kretz Cornerstone Award. MAPA is an advocacy group for people with a mental illness, developmental disability, individuals with brain injury and advanced age individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s. In addition to her work as Clay County Public Administrator, Gwin has served on Missouri’s Working Interdisciplinary Network of Guardianship Stakeholders Taskforce, which has resulted in legislation to be introduced for a total rewrite of the state’s Guardianship and Conservatorship Code. The proposed changes are designed to protect the rights of individuals who might need a guardian or conservator, to better organize the code, to encourage limited guardianship and conservatorship, and to assist families. Gwin established the first Restoration Program for Clay County in 2005 and assisted in establishing an organization to help family members known as the Missouri Guardianship Alliance, Inc. She is also a board member with the Northland Community Services Coalition. 20

f there's one thing that the Northland is spoiled with, it's breweries. In North Kansas City alone, Big Rip Brewing, Cinder Block Brewing and Grain to Glass, a homebrewing store, all provide ample places to drink the local tipple. But there's one thing that all of these places lack--a kitchen. Sure, food trucks fill in the gaps and they will let you bring your own food in to eat but there's something about being able to sit down with a flight of local favorites and a pile of wings to share with friends that simply can't be beat. Now there's a place to do that--Calibration Brewing. The newest brewery in North Kansas City resides in a building that has been owned by its founder since 1994. Glen Stinson is an entrepreneur and beer aficionado and owns not only the building at 119 N. Armour Road, but founded Calibration Brewing this year. The brewery opened this summer and if the population of the dining and tasting room is any indication, it is already proving successful. Calibration brews on site with a seven-barrel system. Glen Stinson started home brewing with his son, Nick Stinson, but has hired Pat Sandman, the head brewer at the now defunct 75th Street Brewery, to oversee the operations in NKC. At this writing, they offered eight brews ranging from the light and easy drinking For What It's Worth Strawberry Blonde Ale to the stauncher Carry On Milk Stout. Beers are available by the pint, of course, but are also offered as a tasting flight.

THE OTHER BENEFIT TO CALIBRATION IS THE TRULY WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT. THE ROOM IS A GOOD MIX OF LOW TABLES, COUCHES AND HIGH TOPS. So what can you nosh on while imbibing? One would expect a selection of greasy, alcohol-absorbing gut-busters but I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the food menu. There are definitely brew pub favorites here--warm, soft pretzel sticks dipped in creamy beer cheese brings Oktoberfest to any month--but there are also healthier options available.Â On my first visit, I was feeling virtuous. I ordered the open-faced avocado sandwich for $8.95. While honestly not expecting much,I was pleasantly surprised by the hearty 21-grain bread that was spread thickly with black bean hummus, melted sharp cheddar cheese and topped with freshly sliced avocado, tomato, lettuce, and sprouts. A sprinkling of salty feta cheese finished the dish. Although vegetarian, the sandwich was surprisingly filling and tasty. I would definitely order it again if I could resist the tempation of the rest of the menu.Â On the heavier side of the menu, there are four options for gourmet hot dogs--Chicago style, bacon and beer cheese, chili and cheese, or kosher kraut. As a friend dug into the Chicago style, it was clear that they have a winner on the dog side of things as well. On my next visit with a group of friends, we tried the pretzels ($6.95) as well as the beer cheese and chili fries ($6.95). Both were great for sharing, if you have friends that won't gobble. The beer cheese is thick and sharp, the perfect consistency for both dishes. The chili was surprisingly good as well. Topping medium cut french fries with a noticeable crunch, the chili and cheese offered great f lavor without leaving the fries soggy. For dinner that evening, I tried another unorthodox menu item for a brewpub--the gyro. While many of us have availed ourselves of the gyro truck after a night of overindulgence, having it on menu was a welcome change. It didn't reinvent the dish but it was a good representation--seasoned lamb and beef with a topping of feta, grilled onion, tomato and lettuce all topped with tzatziki sauce. On a warm, toasted pita round, and served with fries, it was quite satisfying. The other benefit to Calibration is the truly welcoming environment. The room is a good mix of low tables, couches and high tops. A fire place adds a warm, homey feel to the back section of the room. And in nice weather, it will be hard to beat their spacious patio set up. Calibration is sure to become a destination for beer drinkers looking for a good hang in the Northland.

hat could be more satisfying for horror movie aficionados than seeing the latest frightening flick? How about starring in one? Adam Roberts and Brent Miller, owners of the Screenland Armour Theater and Tapcade, have made it possible for your worst nightmare to come true with the opening of SHOCK TREATMENT. Part escape room, part horror movie, Shock Treatment evolved from the pair’s desire to open a haunted house. “We’d always talked about opening a haunted house,” explains Miller, ‘but we decided to go one step further. We’d been to some escape rooms, so we thought why not combine horror with the concept of the escape room? The result was an interactive horror experience in which guests decide their fate through our stories.” Once they came up with the idea, they began looking for the perfect place to set up. “We were driving through NKC one day and saw a For Lease sign on a former retail space. We took a look inside and decided it was the place to start,” explains Miller.

before becoming a part of the experiment. Has everyone escaped? They’re not telling. The second room, Dinner for Four, is the most intense experience. Participants encounter contact with actors during at a dinner party gone terribly wrong. This experience lasts 45-60 minutes. It’s not for the faint of heart! Apartment 1B, the third experience, is a two-person adventure and runs from 45-60 minutes. The theme for this one involves the supernatural. A couple buys an apartment in New York City, knowing an elderly woman had passed away inside. Once they begin remodeling, strange things begin to occur. You’ll have to experience it for yourself to find out what those are! “All three rooms have opened to rave reviews. The response has been great!” says Miller. “We’ve received all 5-star reviews. We’ve been fairly busy since we’ve opened, which is never a bad thing, but we’ll be super busy once the spooky season begins. I would definitely advise people to make online reservations in advance. We’ll fill up quickly!” One addition the owners quickly recognized a need for was the addition of a gathering place for players to hang out and discuss their experience. “We noticed people would leave and gather outside to talk about what they’d just been through. We thought it would be nice if they had a place to sit and have a drink and share their stories. So, we thought why not our place?” Miller and Adams plan to add a 20-30 seat spooky speakeasy that will feature local beverages such as Union Horse, J. Reiger, Restless Spirits and products from S.D. Strong Distilling. The horror-themed hang out will feature several beers on tap also. “We’re extremely hopeful we can open the bar in October,” offers Miller, “but it all depends on how quickly we get our liquor license.” What’s the best part of this? “It’s been fun for us because working at Shock Treatment is like watching a horror film with a different twist every time,” Miller smiles. “We’re pleased to give people the opportunity to experience something they can’t find anywhere else. You get to star in your own horror movie; the difference is you escape alive.” Shock Treatment is open Wednesday through Sunday with the possibility of additional days if everything sells out. eighing four grams and standing one-and-a-half inches tall, the pass rusher on coach Lynn Schmidt’s Kansas City Chiefs’ team does not look formidable. Yet, the miniature athlete buzzes through the offensive front line and sacks the quarterback. Opponent Kelley Newton, coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, switches off the electric current. Schmidt and Newton reset the field for the next play. The “coaches” are two men playing a modern version of electric football, or miniature football, using figurines styled after their favorite teams. The tabletop American football game, invented by Norman Sas of Tudor Games in 1947, is played on a metal vibrating field. More than 40 million electric football games have been sold since its creation. 32

Schmidt first played electric football in 1968 as an eight-year-old. “My Dad brought home a 1949 set he bought at a farm auction,” says Schmidt. “I played the game with my nephew for years until I put it in the closet.” Plastic players are mounted on a rectangular base with plastic prongs underneath. Each coach positions their team on the field. A switch turns the board’s electric current on and off, making players vibrate and move. In the original game, the players moved randomly in circles. Still, the game captured the imagination of kids and even adults.

“In 1999, I saw the game on a shelf at Toys-R-Us,” says Schmidt. “It brought back nostalgia for electric football.” CONTINUED >

Schmidt bought the game. It contained a newsletter about U.S. amateur leagues. Schmidt contacted a player in Iowa. Together, they formed a league that included players in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. “We connected and discussed rules of the game,” says Schmidt. “In 2007, eleven guys and I formed the Miniature Football Coaches Association (MFCA).” Today, coaches compete within the Midwest league and against regional and national leagues. Tournaments are held in Richmond, Virginia, Canton, Ohio, and other cities. Philadelphia’s league consists of 32 coaches with a waiting list of people to join the league.

SMALL TWEAK, BIG RESULTS A key modification drove advancement of game play and league formation. Coaches determined they could “tweak” players by making adjustments to the prongs in the base with pliers or flame. The tweaks enabled a player to move in a straight line, curve, faster, or in other ways, depending on the alteration. “Once you can manipulate the player, that’s where the strategy comes in,” says Newton. “You have running backs that can hit the hole and blocking schemes,” says Schmidt. While the game still has random elements, coaches can more effectively place position players on the field. Players are tweaked to execute a block, rushing, or receiving maneuver. Modern electric football is played on custom-built boards larger than the original game. Each board has quirks as electrical current turns a counterbalanced motor and send vibrations, giving its owner “home team advantage” with knowledge of the field’s idiosyncrasies. “It has turned into a full-time hobby,” Schmidt says. “Some guys build stadiums and detail miniature figures to recreate historic fields and players.”

Schmidt built a replica of Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium, where the Royals and Chiefs once played on the same field. Creating these players, props, and settings is the sports equivalent of model railroading. With its modifications, electric football more closely simulates the professional game it emulates.

BIG LEAGUE PLAY IN MINIATURE Newton, basketball coach of the Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils, is the youngest of six children. He watched older brothers play electric football. When his brothers left for college, Newton kept the game and taught his childhood friends to play. “When I went to college and played basketball, I brought the game and taught friends how to play during downtime,” says Newton. In 2004, Newton discovered electric football tournaments after researching online. Several years later, he moved to Kansas City, looked for local leagues, and found the MFCA. Schmidt still runs the MFCA which organizes local tournaments to qualify for regional and national competition. It also governs the game’s rules and regulations. “I found Lynn in 2008 and reached out,” says Newton. “I learned about the new boards, players, and game-playing schemes. It hooked me. The fact that you can travel and play other coaches is exciting.” Newton advanced to a competitive level since he rediscovered the game. He competed in the national convention in August 2016 in Richmond, Virginia, where he finished seventh in the Final 8 tournament.

FOOTBALL AND FELLOWSHIP The Kansas City Electric Football League (KCEFL) formed in 2015 as others became interested in playing. The league began with six coaches and completed its first season in November 2015. In the KCEFL, a season lasts six to seven weeks with a final week of championship play. Newton, the current KCEFL commissioner, oversees an expanded league of ten coaches that begins its third season in November 2016. “Our league meets once per week and we play two games,” says Newton. “It’s exciting and fun to play against other guys.” Schmidt added with a laugh, “It helps to have understanding wives and girlfriends.” While women have competed in the KCEFL, the league’s coaches are predominantly men. “The focus of the league is fellowship," says Newton. “We use the hobby to meet people and create friendships.” To promote the league and encourage membership, KCEFL games are conducted in rotation at three area bars – Paul and Jack’s in North Kansas City, Johnny’s Tavern in Shawnee, and Tiff n’ Jays in Lee’s Summit. Schmidt and Newton want to grow the KCEFL and add competitors.

PLAYING THE GAME The game has a fundamental format with well-defined rules, plays, and strategies. Opposing coaches have time limits to position 34

players in a matter of seconds and set up offensive and defensive moves known as pivots. Play begins when the offensive coach flips the switch to activate the electricity. Coaches watch the play develop, assessing the implications of players converging to block or separating to break downfield or catch a pass. Newcomers quickly grasp the game’s basic format. Mastering the game is the appeal. The KCEFL details game rules in a 35-page rule book. “With the assistance of experienced coaches, you can be up and running in two to four months and be somewhat competitive,” says Schmidt. “Without assistance, it can take much longer. The best way to learn tweaking is by working side-by-side with someone that knows how to do it. Tweaking is the lifeblood of the game and the hardest aspect to master. It is a continual learning

process. Some bases tweak better than others. Different plastics in the bases can make some much more desirable for speed or strength aspects.” Limited control over each play’s outcome increases the suspense, fun, and use of strategy. Schmidt, Newton, and coaches in leagues across the country compete with serious intent but don’t take themselves too seriously. Like fantasy football and online role-playing games, electric football is fascinating and fun for all ages. The emergence of the KCEFL and MFCA taps into the cultural and historic appeal of professional football and a childhood game that has enthralled generations for nearly seven decades. RESTLESS SPIRITS COMES HOME Husband and wife team up for a spirited endeavor

marketing expert and a science teacher walk into a distillery…. Okay—that’s not exactly how Restless Spirit Distilling came to be, but it’s close: Michael Shannon (the marketing expert) knew he wanted to own a business. The conversation started with his best friend; then talk turned to research and research turned to location scouting. “We knew we needed a few things in a space,” says Shannon. “It had to be in a light industrial zone. It had to have 15-foot ceilings to accommodate the equipment. It had to have a pre-existing wet fire system. And it had to have enough visibility to customers, which is almost unheard of in industrial parks. But it all came together for us here and, luckily, the Northland greeted us with open arms.” A North Kansas City native, Shannon worked his way up the corporate ladder at companies like Bic, Rubbermaid, H&R Block, and Avery Dennison before taking the leap into entrepreneurship. “I’m a marketing guy,” he says. “I can’t help but analyze the data. So we know that the craft distillery business will mature quickly and that the expectations of consumers will continue to increase. We know that the bourbon, rye, and vodka market is saturated with options. And we know it’s a challenge to differentiate ourselves from everyone else.” Enter Stone Breaker Whiskey. “It’s our flagship,” says Shannon. The spirit is a blend of four-year finished imported Irish and Restless Spirit’s own malt whiskey, the latter CONTINUED > of which is distilled twice in traditional pot stills. “Irish whiskey is aged in used bourbon barrels,” says Shannon. “Jameson, for example, is aged in barrels that are up to 100 years old. American whisky is aged in a new barrel every time. We’re replicating the Irish process here. No one else is doing that.” Stone Breaker is one of the distillery’s four spirits. It was in the original business plan. The other whiskey—Sons of Erin—wasn’t. “A friend who lives here in Kansas City was traveling to Ireland,” says Shannon. “I gave him a t-shirt and asked him to please get a picture of my shirt at a distillery there. He did. Then he was in an elevator—wearing the shirt—and a man got on with him. He said ‘tell me the story’ and, after my friend told him about us, the man handed him a business card and said ‘tell your friends to call me. I’d like to help them.’” Turns out, that serendipitous meeting was with John Teeling of Cooley Distillery fame, the same John Teeling who sold his legendary distillery in to Jim Beam in 2011. Emails turned to a partnership and Teeling offered Shannon 1,100 gallons of his Irish whiskey. That whiskey is now private labeled as Sons of Erin. The distillery also offers two clear spirits: Duffy’s Run vodka, a 90 proof vodka made from Missouri corn, and Builder’s Gin, which is where Benay—former science teacher and Shannon’s wife—comes in. “Making a 90 proof vodka that doesn’t tasted like rocket fuel isn’t easy,” says Shannon. “But this is where Benay’s talents really shine

through. She created a filtration process that made our vodka unique and really good.” The gin, however, is Benay’s true triumph. “Our business partner’s only contingency was that we have a gin,” says Shannon. “Now it’s turned into a cult classic that liquor stores can’t keep on the shelves and it’s behind the bar at places like The Farmhouse, Affäre, and Justice Drugstore. Benay is one of a very few women in distilling and we’re so proud of what she’s accomplished.” Benay says she researched and read everything she could find about gin. “Sometimes having a clean slate helps,” she says. “I was starting from scratch. I knew the flavor profile I was after: bright, fresh, green, and happy. I researched common botanicals and went shopping at herb supply stores. I read The Drunken Botanist and came away with about 25 herbs that I wanted to test.” She turned their home kitchen into a lab—with equipment borrowed from her classroom—and started experimenting. In the process, she learned that one of the botanicals that lent a lush, herbaceous note to the gin, Irish Meadowsweet, is one of five ancient Ayurvedic remedies for headaches. Despite the deeply respectful backstory and spirit names that pay homage to and reflect Shannon’s Irish heritage, the space is free of stereotypical Irish motifs. The Shannons enlisted family to help build the space and together, they did as much of the work as possible including drywall, flooring, plumbing, and tile. Ian Byrne—of The Elders fame—carved the back bar. “When we were designing the space,” says Shannon, “I said that I want people to walk in and see Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. And they do!” Restless Spirits Distillery is open to the public two days a week and offers tours— tasting included—for five dollars. They encourage anyone interested to join them on Tuesdays for volunteer bottling night (there’s a waiting list), Benay is planning distilling classes and they are working with Danny O’Neill at The Roasterie on an Irish coffee. The old curmudgeon recorded the souls of Paris coffee and spirit shops, capturing our imaginations. He would have written about Colony Espresso & Beer in North Kansas City with equal zeal. Hemingway’s spirit must have visited while I sat soaking up the ambience and enjoying a well-prepared cup of Colony’s café mocha. A man studied his computer, occasionally taking a sip while writing a composition as two ladies chatted over their morning coffee. The long room of tables that lead to a bar of unimaginable varieties of beer would

Owners Zach Henderson and Drew Cobb know that too. “We were both raised in the Northland and wanted to provide a unique establishment for our customers,” Cobb says. “Our goal is for people to come here to socialize and enjoy exceptional coffee and beer. Northlanders like to take it easy in a pleasant place where they can unwind. Yet people drive from Lee’s Summit and other Kansas City areas for our coffee. They visit and often return to discover how our craft coffee is comparable to other coffee bars.”

Cobb learned how to prepare gourmet coffee in Chicago at a large roasting establishment that offered a full training program. Highly skilled baristas from the Kansas City area have further helped develop Colony’s coffee varieties. “We currently are serving Post or Ceremony Roaster’s coffee from Annapolis, Maryland,” Cobb says. “We occasionally feature a local roaster too.” Patrons visit Colony for favorite versions of coffee or new treats like the recent raspberry jam on toast cappuccino. Watching both men create different styles of coffee uncovers unique styles of developing flavors. Just brewing old fashioned coffee in a pot is not enough for Henderson’s or Cobb’s customers that are spoiled with gourmet versions. CONTINUED > October 2016 | Northland Lifestyle

Customers are equally rewarded with over 80 varieties of beer. “North Kansas City was very helpful in our quest to develop this unique business,” Henderson says. “We intentionally opened as a commercial tap room and specialize in hard to find beers on tap. We originally never intended on becoming a brewery, unless we found the right person. We met Rodney Beagle who spent three years working at Big Rip Brewery as a brewer. So we have begun all the paperwork and licensing to start our own Nano-brewery.” Nano-breweries, a new and increasingly popular segment of the craft brewing world, are intentionally small and make less beer than microbreweries. These breweries usually don't brew more than one batch at a time. This technique will allow Colony to produce their signature unique seasonal f lavors. “We hope to have our Nano-brewery producing by the beginning of 2017,” Henderson says. “We have not decided what the capacity will be, but we will always have three to five of our own beers on tap at the same time. We currently rotate our draft beers every four to five days. Current beer brewers that are specific to us include Crooked Stave, Prairie Artisan and Ales and Jolly Pumpkin Breweries. Our Friday and Saturday nights are generally busy with beer drinkers.” Local Kansas City breweries come into Colony on occasion for “Tap Take Overs” when Colony will have all their taps taken over by one brewer. This type of event that is gaining popularity in America provides beer drinkers with more variety. Beer glasses from each featured brewery are often given away on these unique occasions. “We are constantly changing,” Cobb says. “We are developing plans to continue growing. There is no limit to where we will go, possibly food later. There’s much to deal with to get your car repaired and running again--the stress of having your vehicle towed from the scene if needed, securing a rental car, getting an estimate, and dealing with the insurance company. One thing many people may not know is that you are not required to take your vehicle where the insurance company tells you to. “Your vehicle is your vehicle. You pay the insurance company only to insure it and assist if necessary. This is not saying you can't take your insurance companies' advice, but we strongly advise doing your own research as well,” Chris Jones, Precision Collision owner, says. “There are many quality body shops like Precision Collision that are partners with insurance companies' "Direct Repair Programs" (DRP). We are not part of every insurance companies' DRP. If we were, our lot would be overflowing, due to high volume, and it would take longer to get your vehicle repaired correctly and back to you. Although, we are not a DRP for every insurance company, we still give a lifetime

We work with all insurance companies.” In some cases, depending on your insurance coverage, a brand new car can be repaired using after-market parts, which are not OEM parts. When you have a brand new car, you more than likely want brand new parts from the manufacturer. Not all insurance companies have a policy covering this, but looking into what your policy actually covers can help keep your car brand new even after an accident. To avoid after-market parts on your brand new vehicle, talk to your insurance agent. “Call your insurance agent or representative and make sure you have an ‘OEM Replacement Policy’ (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Though not every insurance company offers this policy, we advise you to be proactive. If you want only factory (OEM) parts, call your agent, and see if this policy is available to you. Then, you can have a piece of mind that your vehicle will be brand new again,” Jones says.

Another costly effect of a car accident is a rental car. Most people do not have an extra vehicle sitting around to use when one car is in the shop, and rental car prices can be expensive. “Call your agent and make sure you have rental insurance on your policy. This is one thing that most of us forget about until the need arises and then it’s too late. The average cost for rental coverage is only about $30 annually (only $2.50 a month), depending on the insurance company and coverage you chose,” Jones says. Finding the right collision repair shop to fix your car can be challenging. Sifting through all the different shops and the programs/certifications they have or don’t have can be confusing if you aren’t aware of all the standards and rigorous training that is involved in becoming a trained, qualified collision repair shop to ensure a safe, quality repair.
