For the Fashionista, Interior Decorators, and Style Icons

Dear Reader,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits and full of creativity.

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is not limited to the clothes we wear or the way we adorn ourselves; it encompasses every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.

Style is deeply personal. It evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. It is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world, and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or shape entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in our community to uplift our spirits, boost your productivity, and ignite your creativity. Whether it be a new outfit at Bella Boutique or spending time outside at Horselife Farm, we can find a way to connect with our personal style. And with help from the Old Boot Factory, we’ll be able to find the perfect blend of Western fashion.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

TWU student Emily Boyd is an international star

Emily Boyd was all smiles as she followed Siobhan O’Brien through the stables of Horselife Farm. Her makeup, which had been expertly applied by her hand, was flawless despite the heat and humidity of North Texas. She's on the farm with the rest of the Northlake City Lifestyle team for the September-style photoshoot and you would never guess that she only recently returned from a trip to South Korea.

Cover model Emily Boyd is a 23-year-old Denton resident with big dreams. “I was born in Florida but moved to Texas when I was 12. So, I spent half my life in one state and half my life in the other!” She said, laughing.

Boyd is a junior in the performing arts program at Texas Women’s University. When she isn’t studying, rehearsing, or performing, she’s modeling.

“Modeling just kind of started for me,” Boyd explained. “One of my friends in high school was doing photography. She had me model for her and it just took off from there.”

Since then, Boyd has modeled for numerous photographers all around DFW. She easily tapped into the generous community and quickly found a place for herself. Fashion has been a huge part of her life for as long as she can remember. Boyd’s parents owned a thrift store while she was growing up which allowed her to try on all kinds of vintage clothes and find a sense of style that was all hers.

While she’s a natural in front of the camera, modeling is only one of her passions. As a performing arts major, Boyd loves dancing, performing, and being on stage.

“I love the butterflies I get before going on stage and the adrenaline rush that comes once I am out there in front of an audience,” she explained.

Dancing and performing for others comes naturally to Boyd. Since she was little, she has always been involved in dance programs and community theater. One of her big goals is to perform on stages worldwide, a goal which she was able to achieve very recently.

Boyd and her Denton theater troop traveled from Texas to South Korea in early July to put on a 4-day showing of singing and dancing.

“We actually had to add a fifth show on Saturday because the first two shows were completely sold out,” Boyd said about the performances she and her group put on. The theater where they performed could seat 1,500 people and it's important to note that all five shows sold out.

This incredible opportunity essentially landed in their laps. The Theatre Denton was rehearsing Singing in the Rain when the theater director mentioned an invitation to perform overseas. Though no one believed it was true, the reality was even greater than they could have imagined. Not only was Boyd’s troop able to perform for huge audiences for a week straight, but they were also chosen to perform select scenes for a music festival that was a broadcast event.

“When people said this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I said ‘Speak for yourself!’,” Boyd laughed. “This is something I want to continue doing. I don’t want it to be a one-time thing.”

What she is most grateful for is simply the opportunity to do what she loves. Performing on stage or slipping into a couture gown for a photoshoot brings her equal amounts of joy.

“I am so grateful to Crystal [Hobbs] and Savanna [Romano] for featuring me in last year’s issue because it really did kick off some of my heart’s desires,” Boyd said about working with the Northlake City Lifestyle team for the 2023 Style issue.

After her whirlwind trip across the globe, Boyd said that she only has a dance show scheduled for November. Until then, her studies and modeling will take center stage.

HOW HORSELIFE FARM IS HELPING BARTONVILLE RESIDENTS FIND PEACE AND STRENGTH THROUGH HORSEBACK RIDING

At Horselife Farm, Siobhan O’Brien and Shelley Peters strive to build a community and a lifestyle centered around the love of horses. They do this by creating an atmosphere of learning and growth, allowing the tranquility of riding and caring for horses to soothe those who want a retreat from hectic days.

The picturesque farm sits on 17 acres and encompasses 2 staffed barns, both indoor and outdoor arenas, a cross-country course, and many amenities beneficial to riding, training, and horse care. In the early morning, it feels like a scene right out of a movie, especially with everyone dressed up in their gear.

“We’re a full-service barn, meaning when people have a horse with us, we are going to ride the horses for them, teach them about their horses, and care for the horses when they have an injury or issue they are working through,” explained O’Brien.

As part of the United States Eventing Association, O’Brien and Peters also foster a love for competition-level horsemanship. They not only introduce and teach riding but hope to ignite in riders an interest in eventing. These events are like an equestrian triathlon which includes dressage, cross-country riding, and showjumping. Throughout all of this, riders must maintain their appearance as well as their horses.

When riding, or jumping, it’s important to wear stylish and practical attire. This is often referred to as equestrian style, but for many, it’s anything but a trend.

“Riding requires hard work and the ability to understand your horse,” explained Peters. “We can teach you how to ride, but you also have a partner–the horse–and maybe they don't feel like doing it exactly perfectly that day. So, it's a partnership because the animal is not a machine, and you have to be sensitive enough to change what you're doing.”

Riding, jumping, and developing a relationship with a horse is about creating unique channels for everything from your habits to how you dress. These things do take time which is why Horselife Farm welcomes riders of all stages with lessons at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Riding and competing are rewarding and provide a sense of community, but for O’Brien and Peters, it is also about something bigger.

“We really teach horsemanship,” said O’Brien. “We want you to love and care for the horse and put the horse first and enjoy it. The horse works for that one hour a day, but at the same time, we need to make sure we're teaching good horse citizenship.”

Because time with horses brings both joy and healing, Horselife Farm partners with Helping on Horseback. Through the program, children with special needs or terminal illnesses visit the farm and spend time with horses whose temperaments are perfect for working with kids.

“Even if you come out and brush, there is something about the outside of the horse that is great for the inside of the person. So, if it’s something you’ve thought about even the littlest bit, come and explore, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

“Horses are used for all kinds of therapy, and you can see the calming nature of the horses,” said Peters. “So, we walk with the rider, play games, and get them comfortable with the horse. Then, depending on how comfortable they are, we can do a little bit more instruction. Primarily, though, it's just about the kids being on the back of the horse and feeling the calmness that a horse instills.”

Ultimately, O’Brien and Peters want to provide a place where horse lovers can come and be part of a community with connections, style, and trust.

“We keep going back to for the love of the horse,” shared O’Brien. “Even if you come out and brush, there is something about the outside of the horse that is great for the inside of the person. So, if it’s something you’ve thought about even the littlest bit, come and explore, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

Serving Community and Country, Inspiring

Future Dreams

I am deeply passionate about helping others and serving the community and country that have given me so much. I have been incredibly blessed with numerous opportunities in my life, and I believe it is only right to give back and inspire others to achieve their dreams. To promote awareness for AFJROTC and the flight academy scholarship, my team organized a flyover at a school football game, perfectly timed with the last note of the National Anthem. I hope we inspired some future aviators that night.

Many of us go to church on Sunday while our Bibles collect dust on a shelf. What if our priorities are wrong? What if opening our Bibles is more important than what we do on a Sunday morning? At ACC, opening our Bibles together to find out who God is, how God loves us, and how that understanding can change our lives is our top priority.

“Jesus said, ‘Go and make disciples.’ That’s the mission. That’s the mark. Discipleship is not a program, not a book, not a method. It is a connection with Jesus, the only one who can transform our hearts.”
