It's time to gather for good food, drinks, and conversations

Welcome fall, y’all! Here in Texas, there is nothing better than the changing of the seasons, especially the weather. October is our most delectable issue of the year where we celebrate the vibrant intersection of food, drink, and community. As we gather around tables both familiar and new, we are reminded that the heart of any community often beats strongest in its kitchens, cafés, and gathering spots.

In this issue, we explore the rich tapestry of flavors that define our local culture. Our editor talked to Argyle Community Church, where everyone has a spot around their table. With them, you are sure to find peers who will join you at any table with open hearts.

We also had the pleasure of sitting down with Roanoke's newest morning coffee spot, Aroma’s On Oak. This is more than your average cafe. Aroma’s On Oak intends to be the premier location for unique and specialty coffee.

This time of year, entertaining is high on the to-do list. That’s why we included some of our favorite cocktails to serve as well as some of the best drinks to order at The Barrel during your next outing.

As the temperature dips and the days get shorter, I am reminded of spending the holidays with my grandmother. One of my favorite memories is her ‘cabbage roll class’ where she taught the family how to make her legendary cabbage rolls. That first smell of fall takes me right back to her kitchen and her beautiful smile as she cooked.

Scent is one of the most powerful memory triggers. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood and can be incredibly comforting. As you flip through the pages, we hope you’ll be inspired to try new flavors, visit new places, and connect with the people who make our community so special. Whether you're a lifelong resident or new to the area, there’s always something new to discover, and we’re thrilled to take you on this journey.

This publication is not possible without your valuable support. Your ideas and dedication have played a crucial role in bringing this project to life, and we are deeply grateful.

As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around town!

EVERYONE HAS A PLACE AT THE TABLE AT ARGYLE COMMUNITY CHURCH

ACC AT THE TABLE

“AT

It all began with a question. Argyle Community Church has been meeting every Sunday for five years in various locations around the community.

A point that she stresses often is that this is not a mega-church. As Fitzgerald explains it, Argyle Community Church is proudly built

ACC, RATHER THAN AUTHENTICITY BEING JUST SOMETHING WE TALK ABOUT, YOU CAN FEEL HOW REAL PEOPLE ARE WITH EACH OTHER.”

Argyle High School off Canyon Falls Drive is their most recent and consistent meeting place. Don’t let the location fool you though, they have a whole team who helps set up and take down their church.

ACC, as it is often referred to, began with a single question: What happens when we die? This was inspired after a beloved local football coach died suddenly and several men in the community began meeting to have deep, meaningful conversations about Jesus. Before long, six core families were meeting to discuss this further. Now, there are over five hundred that attend Sunday sermons.

“We are a pop-up church and it takes about 100 volunteers to set us up every Sunday,” Jennifer Fitzgerald, the community director said. “We have had several people come up to say they can’t believe [our service] happens in a high school.”

around community and Jesus, not a single figurehead or personality. Their goal is to ‘do life together’ which includes a weekly service as well as one-on-one meetings at coffee shops in and around their neighborhood. It makes sense that one of their taglines is ‘at the table’ because that is basically how their congregation started.

One thing Fitzgerald says you will find within their community is authenticity.

"At ACC, rather than authenticity being just something we talk about, you can feel how real people are with each other," she explained. “God can do a lot with people when they're honest about who they are and why they need Jesus.”

Outside of their weekly Sunday service, the ACC community loves to have fun together and loving each other like Jesus. They have life groups that meet on a semester basis to meet simply for the love of gathering. According to Fitzgerald, they're playing co-ed

softball, meeting for Bible studies, and serving together in the local community.

“It can be hard to connect authentically with people,” Fitzgerald said. “We believe the most exciting way to live is with a community in pursuit of the truth. There’s always room around this table for you.”

The mission of ACC is rooted in verses Matthew 28:19-20 which encourages us to “go and make disciples of all nations.” As of today, ACC has taken over three hundred people through the eighteen-week discipleship course. Those three hundred have gone on to pass it forward, inviting others to the table to learn about Jesus for themselves. For Fitzgerald, that’s what ACC is all about.

“The goal is to know who Jesus is and how he loves us, not fill seats,” Fitzgerald explained. “We are also focused on how many people are actively engaged in personal discipleship.”

Though the Argyle Community Church is more than happy to meet at the high school, they do have big plans for the

“IF YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR A PLACE TO CONNECT, BE A PART OF A COMMUNITY, OR YOU ARE JUST TIRED OF LIVING IN ISOLATION

future. They will be breaking ground on a new facility next year on fifteen acres of land. Fitzgerald explained that this would not just be a traditional church but a sevenday-a-week community hub. They plan to have everything from a preschool to a fully equipped gym and sports field along with a complete worship venue.

“We have so many people committed to ACC and it has nothing to do with us. It’s totally a God thing,” she said. “If you are searching for a place to connect, be a part of a community, or you are just tired of living in isolation and you want to experience the greatest joy ever, it’s in a community like this.”

Argyle Community Church meets every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the auditorium of Argyle High School. New attendees are encouraged to visit their website http:// www.argylecommunitychurch.com to learn how to plan their visit.

Our family’s first experience working with Juline and her team was when we remodeled our home’s primary bathroom The project went very smoothly and the crew was amazing. We were so happy with the final result, the following year we asked her to return to update our first floor This included another bathroom remodel, new flooring and a new fireplace. Again, we were thrilled with the results We just completed our third project with Juline I would highly recommend Juline and her crew without reserve. - Melissa Reid

Curated Coffee in a Curated Space

“It was great being able to work with somebody who is active in our community and is invested in the success of local businesses.”
— RYAN BUCK

For Ryan and Kirsten Buck, owners of Aromas on Oak, their coffee shop fulfills three specific purposes: community, coffee, and connections.

“Coffee isn't the number one thing because it's the community that we want, then comes the coffee,” shared Ryan. “We also really want to make connections…not only have people be able to make connections here, but we want to make connections with the community as they come to us. We want to provide a comfortable place to serve as a hub where people can come, relax and enjoy themselves.”

Connecting with residents began during the early stages of the shop’s creation as the couple solicited input from local citizens using social media polls and feedback questions.

“We've really made it a point during every step of the way to focus on using the community to build this place,” said Ryan. “It has been fun to see the community engage and being able to get feedback to ensure that what we build here is something the community wants.”

To help turn their dream into a reality, the Bucks turned to local business owner Ben Huso with Huso Construction. “I met Ben at a Metroport Chamber of Commerce meeting and found out that he does construction,” said Ryan. “It was great being able to work with somebody who is active in our community and is invested in the success of local businesses.”

Encouraged by everyone’s enthusiasm and support for the shop, the Bucks look forward to giving back by partnering with a different local charity, school, or team each month. In addition to providing patrons with opportunities to donate to the organizations by rounding up to the next dollar during purchases, the organizations will be spotlighted using educational materials in the shop.

Ben, Kirsten, and the team are excited to share life and amazing coffee experiences with customers at Aromas on Oak, located at 400 S Oak St. Suite 140 in Roanoke. Find more information at aromasonoak.com and explore the shop’s Facebook page for updates and special events.

Feed Your Soul

Food is exciting to cook, and satisfying to eat but is it enjoyable to read? Novels where food is prominently featured can be a veritable feast for the eyes. Food imagery, also called gustatory imagery, adds depth to a novel, providing a springboard for all kinds of descriptive and symbolic language. Different dishes can transport a reader to new regions of the world, reveal a character’s culture, or symbolically deepen the meaning of a text. So, dive into this list of autumn reads and don’t forget to save room for seconds.

Stanley Park

True crime fans and foodies alike will enjoy this beautifully written novel. The novel follows a Vancouver based chef, Jeremy Papier and his failing bistro. As Papier tries to hold his dreams together, his homeless father drags him into a real-life, 1940s “cold case” investigation. The novel mindfully uses the investigation as well as Papier’s commitment to locally grown foods to pay tribute to Vancouver’s landscape and history.

A Moveable Feast

Published after his untimely death, A Moveable Feast is Hemingway’s memoir. A love letter to 1920s Paris and the literary movement, Hemingway charters the reader through his early years there, one cafe at a time. Along the way, familiar characters like Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald float in and out. This no-frills prose will stick to your ribs and leave you satisfied.

The School of Essential Ingredients

Love is in the air at this Monday night cooking school. The novel follows a cast of hapless students as they are instructed in both the kitchen and in life by the school’s owner, Lillian. Lillian is the group’s fairy godmother as she hands out morsels of advice and challenges the students with advanced recipes. A cozy read, be prepared to fall in love with the decadence of the school’s dishes as well as the sweet message that lingers long after you put down the book.

The Sol Majestic

If you love science fiction, this big-hearted, culinary space opera is sure to hit the spot. The story follows impoverished Kenna, an aspiring guru who hungrily wanders the cosmos until he wins dinner at the galaxy’s most renowned restaurant, The Sol Majestic. A novel that is both fun and thought provoking, Steinmetz uses striking food imagery to explore what truly excites the spirit.

Robson Ranch’s fantastic community offers a combination of amenities, including pickleball, tennis, golf, exercise facilities and separate pools for adults and grandkids. It's truly designed for those seeking an active, vibrant lifestyle in their 40s and beyond.

The variety of clubs and activities, from Bible study to wine tasting and woodworking, ensures that everyone can find something they love. This Premier Active Adult Community is a place filled with fun and relaxation in North Texas. Let me know if you want specific details on homes or anything else about the community!

Deb Siefkin is a Real Estate Broker specializing in the South West corner of Denton County and the communities of Northlake, Justin, Argyle and Flower Mound. She has lived in Robson Ranch for over 20 years and is a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) BUT also holds one of the top RE designations of Certified Residential Specialist (CRS -This is the equivalent of a Masters Degree). UNIQUE Drinks for EVERYONE

At The Barrel in Argyle, specialty drinks are made to be a complete experience. Not only are they pleasing to look at but they are bursting with bright and bold flavors. Each artisanal cocktail is created with the finest ingredients, some of which are made in-house. For example, the Catch Me If You Can margarita is rimmed with their Mama Picante, a house-made tajin using roasted guajillo and ancho peppers, lime zest, and kosher salt.

Everything is developed with the customer in mind. These drinks are meant to be enjoyed, especially with good friends. Now that the seasons are changing, an excellent choice is the Whiskey Stick. This is a riff on the classic Old Fashioned with Old Forester Bourbon, Averna Amaro, St.Elizabeth All Spice Dram, and Maple Syrup. The cinnamon stick ties it all together.

Of course, you can never go wrong with The Barrel's signature margarita, No Trousers. With Mi Campo Blanco, Cointreau, fresh lime, and a housemade blueberry puree, it's sure to be your go-to order this fall.

No matter which drink you choose, you are guaranteed quality with every sip.

Style & Grace cocktail made with Monopolowa Vodka, a housemade black mission fig & basil syrup, fresh squeezed lemon, and fig liqour.
