LIFESTYLE LETTER
New year, new you! There is something so refreshing about the start of a new year. Maybe it's the feeling of closing one chapter and starting a different one. This is the time when so many of us set new goals or resolutions, embrace new opportunities and visualize the year before us. It's also a time of pressure for some. We’re often met with unfinished goals, holiday stress and setting new resolutions for next year that it can feel overwhelming. This issue of Northlake City Lifestyle was crafted to offer inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional and mental health. Every year, I like to assign a word to guide me through the next 52 weeks. I decided that for 2026, my word would be 'Love'. I hope that I can not only spread more love throughout my life and my community, but I can also find a little more love for myself. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress and consistency. What matters more is 1% effort every single day rather than 100% effort once, then fizzling out for the rest of the year. This applies to every aspect of your life: business, health, relationships, etc. Here's an example: Maybe this year, instead of trying to plan one big trip that never happens, you could plan a few shorter trips throughout the year. The owners of Unicus CrossFit know that consistency matters more than anything else. That's how they've been able to develop an incredible community that is open, hardworking and kind. If you want your kids to have a safe space to grow mentally and physically all year long, the women at The Little Gym of Roanoke have your back. A challenge I'd like for us all to strive for this year: focus on small, consistent actions to help you reach your goals. This can mean trying a free fitness class or gifting yourself the chance to attend a local pottery course. Whatever you do, do it with love. Here's to a happy, healthy and successful new year! xx,

Fortify Wildlife Solutions Many of us have New Year's resolutions, but do they include protecting our homes? During the winter months, there could be critters looking for somewhere warm and cozy to stay, and we don't want that to be inside our home. That's why we recommend reaching out to Fortify Wildlife Solutions. Not only do they humanely remove unwanted wildlife, but they also prevent them from showing up in the first place.

CREATING A FUN, POSITIVE SPACE WHERE KIDS LEARN AND GROW.
When Buket Campbell’s kids were younger, they flourished in the inviting and energetic atmosphere they experienced at The Little Gym. Buket remembers loving the environment that gave her kids a positive experience as well as a head-start in motor-skills and socialization beginning at an exceptionally young age. A few years ago, she and her husband, Shane, wanted to bring that same experience to local families. So they partnered with Krystal Gunn and opened The Little Gym of Roanoke recreating the same environment where their children thrived. “I was always asking how I could make a difference in the community and in the lives of children, wanting to help change their lives in a positive way. After some research, we knew that opening The Little Gym would be a wonderful thing,” Buket shared. “We wanted kids to have a place where they feel comfortable to be themselves because when kids feel safe and accepted, they learn.” The Little Gym offers a variety of classes and activities for kids up through 12 years of age. Through the activities, kids have structured play and instructional time in a nurturing environment where they have the freedom to make mistakes and have fun as they work to master skills. Getting kids moving is also a great way to help them learn to channel energy into positive physical activity that will establish a lifetime pattern of wellness. “Kids are always busy little humans, and they are always doing something because they are ready to learn,” Buket said. “At The Little Gym, we break learning down to three different dimensions: physical, emotional, and social. Most of our classes are based on exploration, because with exploring, you have to move around, and you burn some of their endless energy. It's wonderful for their developing muscles and helps them build confidence.” CONTINUED >

Babies as young as 4 months old benefit from the wide-open spaces and many activities that not only build strength and flexibility but also provide kids and their parents with the opportunity to interact with people experiencing the same stage of life. As children grow, the activities and skills mastered become more complex. Gymnastics classes cater to kids from 4 months old to 12 years old and focus on the fundamentals for all skill levels. Children are grouped by age with parent/child classes available for younger children. Learning gymnastics fundamentals not only helps children build their core strength, but it also improves balance, enhances coordination skills and engages the brain in a way that helps kids concentrate on tasks. During summer and holiday breaks, The Little Gym hosts halfday themed camps that provide a great place for kids to go and have fun while not in school. Camps offer a perfect opportunity for kids to expend energy in a supervised environment while parents balance their normal work schedules. The Little Gym also offers Birthday Party packages guaranteed to keep kids engaged while they celebrate each birthday milestone. Special Parent Survival Nights give parents a local, safe place for their kids to go so that they can enjoy a date night or simply time to run errands. “We try to do Parent Survival Nights on Friday nights, and it’s the perfect amount of time, especially for younger kids,” Buket explained. “During those three hours, we have snacks, do crafts, and then have gym time.” In addition to providing fun, physically challenging activities for kids, The Little Gym plays an important role in the local community by serving as a hub for relationship building. The indoor, climate-controlled space provides a consistent place for kids to try new things and make new friends. Because kids are organized in groups, even those who are shy tend to feel comfortable interacting with coaches and other kids. Parents who spend time together in the viewing room benefit from the time together as well and over the years, many new friendships have developed among families. A big part of the atmosphere at The Little Gym can be attributed to the knowledgeable and friendly team who work with the kids each day. In addition to coaching the kids in physical skills development, the team strives to create a place where the kids can have a great experience. “When the students get to us, they might be having a bad day or maybe something happened at school,” Buket said. “Even if they only have one hour with us, we want them to leave feeling loved and with fun memories of their time with us.” The Little Gym Roanoke is located at 600 E. Byron Nelson Blvd. in Roanoke. For more information on class schedules and upcoming special events, visit www.thelittlegym.com/texas-roanoke or 817-492-1294. U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered
16

are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you. 17
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required. CONTINUED >

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.
7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

Path to Wellness Simple steps towards optimal health with Jason Racca of R3 Physio. By taking a holistic approach to physical therapy, the team at R3 Physio helps people reach their full potential by addressing not only specific pain points but also other body systems that work together for optimal health. According to Jason Racca, owner of R3 Physio, the path to optimal health starts with prioritizing being active during the day. “Movement helps lubricate our joints and tissues. When we're not moving, our joints and tissues are not able to get the hydration and lubrication they need. Over time, that can lead to tightness, stress, and strain,” Racca said. “A simple 15-20 minute walk also helps the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a big part of how our body gets rid of waste, and keeping it healthy helps decrease inflammation, improve our immune system, and decrease pain.” Staying hydrated and eating a nutritious diet also helps reduce inflammation and improve the health of tissues and joints. Although each person has unique circumstances, Racca recommends avoiding processed foods and foods high in sugar because these increase inflammation. Instead, consuming whole foods and foods rich in omega-3 tends to decrease inflammation. Reducing inflammation throughout the body not only helps tissues and joints but can also reduce brain fog and improve brain function.

Many of the patients Jason and his team help have tried traditional avenues for healing and still struggle with pain. So, he encourages people to keep seeking answers. “Even if you've tried physical therapy before, there is still an answer out there,” he says. “So be your own advocate and keep asking the questions. There is an answer; you just have to find the right people and the right approach.” For more information about R3 Physio, which is located at 4324 Heritage Trace Parkway, Suite 810, in Keller, visit r3physio.com or call 817-593-3599. “It’s our job to steward our bodies well, to maintain a healthy and capable body that can serve our families and our communities for a lifetime,” Braden Rubey, owner of Unicus Athletics & CrossFit in Argyle said. Braden Rubey was a multi-sport athlete growing up, competing in gymnastics, football, track, and powerlifting. Competing in these sports gave him the foundational skills to continue growing and succeeding in this space, and entering the CrossFit community gave him a newfound passion, as well as a new career. Unicus Athletics was founded in 2014, built from the ground up by the hard work and dedication of Braden and his wife, Maribel Rubey, coach and general manager of Unicus. Braden began collecting equipment for his gym in 2012, and with perseverance and a passion for the fitness industry, he opened Unicus. Whether you’re new to a gym or have been in the fitness space for many years, Unicus is a great place to challenge yourself and exceed your own expectations. Unicus has members of all ages and ability levels, and they even offer a 1:1 on-ramp course to meet you where you’re at and prepare you for their classes. Braden believes that “CrossFit is the most well-rounded and best use of a 1-hour workout.” CrossFit allows you to push your limits and continue to grow stronger in many movements that you use day-to-day. Not only will you get a sweat in, but you’ll have a community around you that becomes your teammates.
What really makes Unicus so special is the atmosphere that has been created. The coaches at Unicus pour into their members and strive to help them succeed, no matter what their goals are. “I hope our members continue to set new PRs and reach their body composition goals. But if physical growth is all we improve, then we have failed. We truly strive to make a meaningful impact physically, mentally, and spiritually,” Braden said. The committed coaches at Unicus go above and beyond for the members of their gym, whether you’re a beginner or have years of experience. Braden believes our health is the most important asset we have, and he encourages you to give Unicus Athletics a chance. “One day, someone’s going to invite you to CrossFit with them. It’s important you say yes. This is your invitation. We are inviting you to give Unicus a shot. We believe CrossFit is for everyone, any age, any level, any stage in life you could think of,” Braden said. “Some days will be fun, many days will be hard, and every day will be worth it. At Unicus, we encourage you to set goals. Let our coaches guide you and encourage you to go for and achieve something hard,” Braden said. No matter your personal goals, the coaches at Unicus are passionate and ready to provide guidance. SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 2/3 cup raisins • Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars
This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.
Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

Information obtained from the NTREIS Multiple Listing Service. The numbers you see are based on the statistical median of the data collected from September 2025 for each neighborhood.
For the 12th year in a row, real estate tops America’s favorite investments—37% rank it #1, far ahead of stocks at 16%. And investors are acting on it, buying 13% of all homes sold in 2024. Why? A rental delivers steady rent, growing equity, long-term appreciation, tax perks, and the power of leverage—returns other assets can’t match. But not every property pays off. Success starts with knowing what to look for. Scan the QR code to have the smart investor’s checklist.

At R3 Physio, we specialize in helping people who feel stuck.
Dr. Christina Morison, the newest R3 Physio team member, uses innovative techniques from her advanced manual therapy training to offer hope and solutions for stubborn pain.
Hope lives in the places no one else thought to look. If your pain hasn’t improved—despite doing everything “right”—you may not have received the care your body truly needed. We combine advanced manual therapy, full-body movement analysis, and nervous system work to uncover what others missed. This isn’t protocol-based rehab. This is listening, discovery, and custom healing. Let’s look where no one else has. R3PHYSIO.COM | 817-221-8248 | B R3PHYSIO | V @R3PHYSIO 4324 HERITAGE TRACE PKWY, STE 810 FT. WORTH, TX 76244

God Makes All Things Beautiful Faith gives me strength during tough times by staying active in church and mission trips. I enjoy cross country and completed two half marathons. I’m excited to pursue nursing, because I love working with children. You’ll find me savoring coffee and exploring the mountains. Difficult experiences have shown me that God can make all things beautiful.
