The arrival of January often brings a sense of renewal—an opportunity to set fresh goals and pursue new possibilities. For others, January can feel like a harsh reminder of past missteps or the weight of expectations to make this year "the one." With this issue of Northlake City Lifestyle, we focused on a perspective of progress over perfection. Rather than promoting quick fixes or temporary solutions, we highlighted sustainable habits and ideas that can lead to lasting improvements in any area of your life. Our team is excited to welcome you in this new year with hope, grace, and joy. It is a privilege to continue connecting our community through this platform. Our goal this year is to outperform ourselves and offer you better and better magazines each month. In life—whether it’s business, personal growth, or health—it’s not the occasional choices that define success but the consistent ones. Commit to your workout goals, but follow the advice of R3 Physio to ensure you can remain consistent in your efforts. Or, if this is the year you plan on making a large purchase, read what Lamar National Bank has to say about developing financial wellness. Here’s to a year of progress, balance, and joy. We’re cheering you on!

the BENEFITS OF PLANT-BASED EATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing.
14
EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE
Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows to you consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!
TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. A plant-based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes, including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.

R3 Physio offers expert tips to prevent injury with new year resolutions
Feel Good Movement A name like R3 Physio begs the question: What exactly are the three R’s? Jason Racca, owner of R3 Physio defines them as being the comprehensive process of the physical therapy services his office provides: Relief: The first priority is providing pain and discomfort relief to the injured person. Restore: Restoring the affected area to its state before an injury or decline in functionality by taking a comprehensive approach to the patient’s care. Refine: Where traditional physical therapy practices would stop once functionality is restored, Jason’s practice prioritizes the patient’s goals and desired results.
18
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FIT N E SS
So what does a typical visit at R3 Physio look like? Of course, that depends on the patient, but Jason says the most common things they see at R3 Physio are chronic pain, hips and lower back, and TMJ/airway dysfunction. Sessions typically include an hour or more of focused attention and a hands-on approach that leaves patients feeling understood and heard as unique individuals. Jason emphasized that at R3 Physio, they seek to investigate all avenues of why someone might be experiencing discomfort or movement restriction. Sometimes they find that other issues are going on within the body leading to pain and stiffness that manifests externally. The goal is to find the root cause of the issue rather than treat the symptoms. CONTINUED >
According to Jason, most patients don’t realize their potential until they can heal what brought them in to begin with. Once those issues are resolved, patients can ask themselves, “How do I keep going?” to push them toward achieving results that put them above their previous baseline. “It's not uncommon for patients to find themselves seeking treatment at R3 Physio because of a chronic issue that fails to respond to traditional treatment,” he said of the kind of clients he typically sees. This is because conventional physical therapy treatment is dictated based on a general timeline of where that patient should be and not where they actually are. This can lead to patients either being pushed too hard or even more concerning, not making progress at all and sliding backward from where they began. R3 Physio seeks to dismantle this way of approaching treatment, instead choosing to adopt and prioritize a hands-on approach tailored to the individual. JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . 19
“IT’S NOT UNCOMMON FOR PATIENTS TO FIND THEMSELVES SEEKING TREATMENT AT R3 PHYSIO BECAUSE OF A CHRONIC ISSUE THAT FAILS TO RESPOND TO TRADITIONAL TREATMENT,”
20
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FIT N E SS
In contrast, conventional physical therapy sessions are usually around 30 minutes, multiple times a week, and patients are often left to their own devices for exercises that are done at home alone. Without proper guidance and coaching, it can be very easy for someone to reinjure themselves with this kind of treatment plan. When it comes to exercise and sports injuries, Jason says that the most common types are due to overuse, namely in the shoulders and lower back. Most people have experienced a pulled muscle at some point in their lives, or at the very least, know that they’ve overextended themselves when they probably shouldn’t have. This is exactly what Jason says is the cause of most of these types of injuries: a misguided mindset and/or not taking the proper time to have a safe and effective workout. Patients who attempt at-home workouts without the proper instruction are more likely to experience injury or pain. In this case, quality most definitely comes before quantity. Jason says, “More often than not, it’s our mindset that leads to injury by overestimating our current ability.” This tends to come from patients who were very active in the past and think they can dive headfirst back into their previous routine. Another issue is time, which we are all guilty of not having enough of, so many often attempt to just do the workout, but neglect to take the time to properly warm up our bodies before getting into the main event. Skipping out on cooling down once we’ve finished is another issue. This is essentially pushing your body into the deep end of a pool and expecting it to swim. It should come as no surprise when a muscle gets pulled or something twists out of place. Luckily, Jason’s expert knowledge also includes another R - refrain. How does one refrain from injury in the first place? He recommends:
• Take the time to warm up before diving into the workout. For example, a light walk or stretching to get your body accustomed to movement. • Having an optimistic, but realistic mindset on your current ability. It's okay to use lighter weights with higher reps to get back to your previous baseline. • Consider using physical therapy as a preventative rather than a corrective solution. Physical therapy is a great way to help maintain your strength and flexibility so you can reach your goals. Jason and the R3 team recently moved into a new space in Keller, so don't wait to check them out! Visit their website, r3physio.com, to learn more or to book your next appointment.

River Bleu found a place in the Northlake community thanks to Lamar National Bank
ARTICLE BY KELLIE KREVOSKY PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA ROMANO
Community Financial Wellness 24
M ON E Y M AT T E R S | FI NAN CE + LE GAL SE RVICE S
From Lubbock to Northlake, River Bleu has deep roots in the community. The business was founded by Gracie McKall in Lubbock, Texas. Maddie Waller, Gracie’s sister, runs the Northlake Location in the Plaza at the Commons. The River Bleu story is a special one. The company began in 2017 in Gracie’s apartment. She started with refurbished furniture that she would take to Trade Shows around Lubbock. Eventually, she had inventory overflowing out of her apartment. After six years of success, she decided to loop her sister in. When they chose to open up a location here in Northlake, the sisters reached out to the community bankers at Lamar National Bank. “Having the store in Lubbock, we had already had experience with other banks,” Maddie said. “We knew we needed to partner with someone who knew small businesses and the community.” Lamar National Bank fit that bill. Maddie and Gracie began to have oneon-one conversations with Dylan Ruthart, the branch manager. He guided them through the different types of business products available to them and explained which one would be the best for their endeavors. It was quite a surprise for her to learn just how many perks they had available despite being a smaller, local bank. “What’s so different about Lamar, and Dylan, is the level of confidence they have,” Maddie said about working with the bank. “He was not only confident in his knowledge but he helped build confidence in ourselves.” River Bleu and Lamar National Bank continue to be a perfect match. Maddie explained that the average customer for their store is the working mom. They offer clothing, home goods, and gifts that range in price with items that can cost anywhere from $10 to $100. “What’s so different about Lamar, and Dylan, is the level of confidence they have,” Maddie said about working with the bank.
What differentiates Lamar National Bank is its commitment to the community. According to Maddie, everyone at the bank is always ready to pour back into the area. “We are members of the Metroport Chamber here, we participate in sponsorships, and of course, we will have a physical presence at events,” Dylan said about how Lamar National Bank gets involved in the community. Dylan is the main point of contact for the sisters. His first impression was that they were extremely nice, friendly, and passionate. He understood right away their desire to put customers first and provide a space that they could feel comfortable in. One thing everyone at Lamar strives to do is build a personal relationship with their customers. Everyone who walks in is a
friend or a family member, not a number. That was something that Maddie and Gracie noticed right away. Maddie continues to have a relationship with the bank, often going in to talk with Dylan about anything. Whether you are an individual or a business owner, if you need assistance, Maddie highly recommends Lamar. She says all you have to do is meet with a banker and you’ll be able to see and feel the difference. Dylan agrees and says that the best advice for anyone this time of year is to not bite off more than you can chew. Take it step by step and if you need help, rely on him. To learn more about either business, visit lamarnationalbank.com, riverbleuboutique.com, or head over to The Plaza at the Commons and stop in to say hi!

Rex and Jennifer work alongside three of their four children and a knowledgeable team to provide the freshest quality feeds, hay, pet products, and lawn and garden care in a warm and friendly environment. With a focus on animal care and nutrition, D&L Farm and Home Denton has everything to care for horses, cows, goats, chickens, pets, and more. Additionally, the store is expanding the gardening department to offer more plants and herbs, which correlates with a growing trend Jennifer has noticed over the years. “I think people are becoming more and more aware of what they're putting into their bodies and want to know where their food is sourced from,” she explained. The new plant offerings will allow customers to participate more actively in their food production. This perspective shift also includes people being more aware of the feed consumed by their livestock and pets. They try to cater to as many customers as possible by carrying two national brands, Purina and Nutrena, as well as non-GMO and organic feeds. The latter are particularly popular with their chicken customers. The store receives feed shipments weekly and those frequent deliveries, combined with a high rotation of feed, ensure everything is fresh and hasn’t been stored for long periods of time before sale. The result is a high-quality product distributed to customers in a timely manner.
Another area where Jennifer has noticed a growing trend is in families wanting to raise their own chickens and harvest fresh eggs. “I think when small homesteads and hobby farms began it was because people wanted to know more about their food and where it came from,” she said. “Then COVID really kind of sealed it for some people - they no longer want to rely on the grocery stores and they want to be more self-sufficient.” D&L Denton began carrying live chickens yearround in 2012. Sales continued to trend upward until demand exploded during COVID and they sold over 12,000 chickens in 2020. Last year’s numbers rose even higher with an estimated 15,000 birds sold. “It shocks me how many chickens we sell, and it keeps growing every year,” said Jennifer. “We work with five or six different hatcheries in order to bring in the breeds that people want and be able to have the supply shipments that we need.” Because they are part of the community, Rex and Jennifer develop relationships with customers that help them understand local needs. “I would say that customer service is probably the number one aspect of being a locally owned business,” she shared. “We both enjoy getting to know our customers and we are going to try to do whatever we can to ensure our customers are happy.” This includes providing customers with local delivery and helping local farmers even when weather conditions are not ideal. It’s not unusual to see Rex or one of their boys making deliveries to homes, even when there are four inches of ice on the ground. That’s one commitment they stand by, to be open when no one else might be because animals still have to eat, even during the winter. CONTINUED >

These personal connections and providing for a community they know so well are both great reasons for shopping locally. Another huge benefit of supporting locally owned businesses is the economic impact on the community. According to a recent Capital One Shopping Research report, dollars spent at locally owned, independent businesses potentially recirculate in the local economy an average of six to fifteen times. Additionally, local retailers retain 289% more revenue for the local economy than chain stores.

Our family’s first experience working with Juline and her team was when we remodeled our home’s primary bathroom. The project went very smoothly and the crew was amazing. We were so happy with the final result, the following year we asked her to return to update our first floor. This included another bathroom remodel, new flooring and a new fireplace. Again, we were thrilled with the results. We just completed our third project with Juline. I would highly recommend Juline and her crew without reserve. - Melissa Reid

FOR I KNOW THE PLANS I HAVE FOR YOU, DECLARES THE LORD...TO GIVE YOU A FUTURE AND A HOPE. JEREMIAH 29:11
“I grew up in a Christian household, like many of us, doing all the right things. I prayed, I read my Bible, went to church, even went to a Lutheran high school. But even with all that, something felt missing. No matter what I tried I still felt empty like I was searching for something more.” Daniella found what she was looking for; it’s a story of true life change.
