As the calendar turns to November, we eagerly await Thanksgiving and a chance to enjoy time with family. This is also a time to give thanks to the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. It's a time to reflect and give of ourselves to others. Expressing gratitude is good for our health and teaches us also how to show grace to ourselves. Reinhardt pointed out how just a simple gesture or compliment can cause a ripple effect, with others paying that action forward. We are all ready for fall’s cooler weather, but our vehicles need a little preparation for the change of seasons. Robert Lowe, the franchise owner of Christian Brothers in Argyle, has more than 40 years of experience in auto repair, serving in a variety of roles. He opened the Christian Brothers shop in January at 205 Stella St. He offered some must-do tips to get your vehicle ready for fall and the upcoming winter.

WINTERIZE With our mostly mild winters and only a few days staying below freezing for more than just a few hours, the word winterize draws some quizzical looks locally. But Lowe said there are still some basics you need to do to prepare. “When you say winterize in Texas, people kind of roll their eyes. If we were in Michigan, everyone knows exactly what they need to be doing,” Lowe said. “You get new antifreeze, a new battery and change all the hoses. But here in Texas, you still want to winterize your vehicle. You want to get your antifreeze tested. We can tell you what its boiling point is, and what’s the freezing point. You also definitely want to get your battery tested. If the summer heat didn’t ruin the battery, the cold coming up definitely will, if it’s more than three to four years old.” Lowe added the extreme heat this summer was especially tough on batteries.

CHECK YOUR TIRES The string of days of 110-degree days turned the asphalt into an oven baking your tires. As the climate changes, with cooler temperatures and the return of rain to produce wet roads, it’s time to check your tires. “Your tire pressures are going to decrease just because the temperature outside is down,” Lowe said. “You’re definitely going to want to get your tire pressure checked and adjusted.” CONTINUED >

The belts and hoses under your hood are made of rubber and the heat takes on a toll on them. “Generally speaking if your vehicle is 3 to 4 years old, it’s a real good idea to take a look at those things and check to make sure they are not about to break,” Lowe said. “It’s a lot less expensive to replace a belt now than when you’re stuck on the side of the road.”

A COMPREHENSIVE ONCE-OVER The start of the fall is also a good time to have a routine check of your entire vehicle. Christian Brothers offers a courtesy inspection. “We don’t charge for it. We do the vehicle plan. We check everything from the lights and bulbs to the hoses, belts, filters and all the fluids,” Lowe said. “All that is put together in an electronic report that we send the customer. We talk to them on the phone and discuss what we’ve discovered. If I were to recommend anything to anybody coming into the cooler months, it would be to let us do the courtesy inspection on the vehicle.”

Staring at her now healthy 4-year-old son CJ, Jocelyn Carter feels an incredible sense of gratitude as Thanksgiving approaches. For nearly 3 years, CJ had battled a string of health issues that led to trips to the ICU, appointments with specialists and batteries of tests trying to find a diagnosis. “Last year was our most stressful year. The paramedics came for him three times at our house,” Mrs. Carter recalled. “It got to the point where the nurses on the ICU floor knew us by name. That’s never a good thing.”

CJ’s health first took a downturn at 9 months old. His pediatrician believed he was asthmatic, which was leading to him being sick regularly. Cases of strep, ear infections and croup followed. When he later enrolled in daycare, the illnesses worsened. “We were in and out of urgent cares probably every week. Then around his second birthday, that’s when things took a turn and he just got sicker,” Mrs. Carter said. After the croup, he started to developing strider. He was admitted to the ICU a total of five times.

“His doctors have even been surprised by his turnaround that has included a growth spurt and improved speech.”

Ramon’s Hair Design “The first time it was about four days, and every time after that was even worse,” Mrs. Carter said. He went to see a list of specialists, a pulmonologist, cardiologist, allergist, ENT doctor, audiologist and GI doctor. “All the doctors gave us different points of view,” Mrs. Carter said. “So we treated one thing at a time. We treated his allergies and he kept getting sick. We treated his acid reflux with medication and it worked for about a month.” Tests for cystic fibrosis and other diseases came back normal. Frustrated after the last series of tests and a trip to the ICU in February 2023, she began considering a holistic treatment. She took her son to Dr. Dupre Spencer’s clinic in Argyle. Mrs. Carter said she was skeptical as she explained her son’s medical history. But after the initial visit and adjustments, she saw her son’s health start to turn around. “We started off with three times a week for 15 minutes. He was just adjusting him,” Mrs. Carter said. “He was taking his body temperature and making sure his nervous system levels were aligned with each other. When he did his initial consultation, his body was in a lot of stress. “So I really was very skeptical. I saw the results whenever he did the nervous system test on CJ.” Soon after treatment started, CJ started to feel better and was able to get off the antibiotics, steroids and acid reflux medications. Since starting in May, he has not been sick. “The only medications he takes here and there is a natural medication like saline for his nose,” Mrs. Carter said. “He did a complete 180.” His doctors have even been surprised by his turnaround that has included a growth spurt and improved speech. After not being able to go to the pool last summer, Mrs. Carter said they spent nearly every day at the pool this summer. He also is taking martial arts. “We’re really happy and we’re going to continue going to see Dr. Spencer weekly,” Mrs. Carter said. She's thankful her son is back healthy and experiencing the life of a normal kid.

Getting ready for Thanksgiving and the holidays brings added stress, with the added duties of cooking, hosting family and decorating. We all want the perfect Instagram-worthy celebration, and in doing so often in a season of giving grace, show little to ourselves. Vianey Reinhardt, a licensed professional counselor, at Connections Wellness Group, stresses the importance of not focusing on shortcomings during the holidays and celebrating our personal achievements. “One of the realities as humans is that we are very good at attending to the things that aren’t going right,” Reinhardt said. “We can allow that to crowd out the opportunity to have a level of gratitude and level of appreciation for the things that are going right.” To help yourself and find balance during the holidays, Reinhardt suggests focusing on gratitude. As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s the perfect time to work in an exercise she picked up from a speaker. “There was an exercise in gratitude where you practice on a daily basis identifying three things that happened during your day that you are thankful for,” Reinhardt explained. “If something went well, an interaction that you had that was positive, or an accomplishment

big or small, appreciate whatever it was. She said in that practice of just those three things at the end of the day, she noticed she began to look for those opportunities to be grateful during the day.” Don’t get too caught up with social media clips of perfect holiday settings or trying to keep up with the neighbors. “I actually just used this quote with my daughter, ‘Comparison is the thief of joy,'” Reinhardt said. “It’s when we live our lives comparing ourselves to other people instead of reveling in our own accomplishments and appreciating what we have.” Volunteering and giving to charitable outlets is another way to show gratitude and help your own well-being during the holidays. Reinhardt explains in giving to others, you find purpose and value. She also said simple gestures of expressing appreciation for others and extolling compliments can also start what she described as a “ripple effect.” “Chances are they’ll give you something back and they may move forward to give somebody else something,” Reinhardt said. “That’s a wonderful way to begin a great cascade of good things.”

They want to make it special, but they’re stressed out.” Johnson eliminates the worry and stress for planning events, promising exquisite menus, delicious drinks and enchanting settings. “Between The Barrel, The Cork Club Lounge [in The Barrel] and The Bartonville Tavern, we have the perfect event space for any occasion between the different concepts,” Johnson said. Once described as “all business” by The Barrel’s owner Brandon Bohannan, Johnson joined the staff a little more than a year ago, and in addition to event planning, she also oversees staffing and the restaurant’s social media platforms. The hospitality industry was a career switch for the busy wife and mother, who worked as an operations manager for emergency rooms for a decade. “It’s been a good change,” she said. “It’s been fun to help create so many celebrations.”

Johnson has planned all types of special events, including corporate lunches, birthday parties, wedding rehearsal dinners, baby showers, happy hours and dinner events. “We really do a little bit of everything,” she said. “And that’s what I enjoy; we can customize it for them.” Johnson said she and her team can provide food, drinks, decorations and even live music – all with personalized details. “Depending on the event, we do customized menus – food or drinks,” she said. “I’ve also done a his and her cocktail for weddings and featured cocktails on birthdays, too, based on the guest of honor’s favorites.” Johnson said the best aspect of the job is forming bonds with people. In the span of a year, she’s seen the children of their regulars grow and change, and she’s helped plan wedding dinners and luncheons with hopes of one day celebrating the anniversaries of those same couples. “I love that we’re local and community-centered,” she said. Although Johnson had never considered planning events professionally, the restaurant world has provided the perfect avenue to indulge her creativity and connect with the community. “I’ve enjoyed being able to put it all together,” she said. “I have a great chef, a great mixologist and our owner and assistant manager is a florist. When you have that team that you can piece together, you think, ‘why not?’”

As the busy owner of Berrymans Salon Style, Heidi Berryman has the preparation for Thanksgiving down to a science. The stylist hits the store a week ahead of time to buy all her dry ingredients to get ahead of the rush, before the last-minute run on Wednesday for the remaining vegetables and fruits. Chief on her shopping list are the ingredients for the turkey stuffing recipe that has been satisfying appetites in the family for generations. “It’s been in the family for years and has always been one of the staples,” Berryman said. “It’s from my mom’s family. I’ve looked in old fashioned cookbooks and never found it. I know it’s a family recipe. It’s one of the staples we make sure that my mom makes every year we get to be with them.” Every family has stuffing, with its own pinch of spices to separate it from others. But what makes this recipe unique is the use of potatoes. “Most people don’t use potatoes in their stuffing,” Berryman said. “It’s also more of a wet stuffing than dry.” The rest of the recipe includes onion, celery, butter, milk, chicken stock, eggs, sage, poultry seasoning and bread crumbs. Salt and pepper can be added for taste. Berryman suggests experimenting a bit to fit your tastes. “It’s hard to put on paper because we do everything by taste,” Berryman said. While some debate it, Berryman’s family usually cooks the stuffing with the turkey. “The juices drip into the stuffing and it just tastes even better,” Berryman said. Along with enjoying the stuffing, Berryman enjoys a short break from the salon to spend time with family, which includes five children ranging from 27

to 13. This year will be different as her 18-year-old son is a freshman at the University of Montana and will not be at home this holiday. They also may be going to Arkansas instead of hosting this year. But the memories stirred from traditional meals, including the family’s popular turkey stuffing will help the holiday still feel like home. TURKEY STUFFING Serves 8 to 10 people Cook time: 45 minutes Ingredients • 1 pound of Russet potatoes • 1 small yellow onion diced • 4 celery stalks diced • 8 tablespoons of butter • 6 slices of white bread or 1 1/2 cups of seasoned bread crumbs • 1/4 cup of milk • 1 1/2 cup chicken stock • 2 large eggs • 1 teaspoon of sage • 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning • salt and pepper to taste Combine all ingredients and bake at 350 degrees until ready.
