"If I'm not taking care of myself, I'm not the best mom."

In a fast-paced world where health often takes a backseat, Taylor Walker Sinning shines as an inspiring advocate for balanced living. A former professional dancer turned fitness model, Walker has embraced various life stages while prioritizing health—not just for herself, but for her family and community. Her journey embodies resilience, community support, and the pursuit of wellness, shaped by her experiences as a mother and caregiver.

WALKER’S JOURNEY

Originally from Long Island, Walker moved to vibrant cities such as Portland and Miami, immersing herself in the bustling fitness scene. In 2013, after winning a national fitness model search, she launched her blog, TaylorWalkerFit.com, and earned certifications in group fitness, nutrition, and pregnancy coaching. These experiences fueled her passion for wellness. As a mother, she now offers personalized fitness coaching and wellness workshops specifically for moms, helping them integrate healthy habits into their busy lives. Recently, she partnered with her friend Meryl Joshy and Drop Fitness to host strength and cardio classes, complemented by wellness discussions that explore modern motherhood. Now residing in Upper Saddle River, Walker has found her rhythm as a wellness advocate for local moms. "My brother had lived here for a few years and always raved about it," she shares. "We wanted a community-driven town with access to New York City." From Lions Park to fall festivals and the Junior Women’s Club, she has built a network of friends who feel like family. Reflecting on her journey, she notes, "When I first started booking jobs, I felt so different. Now, I see a beautiful diversity on set, which truly reflects America." This shift resonates in her community, where families of all shapes and sizes come together to support one another.

WELLNESS FOR MOMS IN THE COMMUNITY

As a mother of two energetic children, Walker understands the delicate balance of parenting. "If I'm not taking care of myself, I'm not the best mom," she explains. This mantra motivates her to treat workouts like essential appointments, highlighting the importance of her own health. She promotes healthy habits for her children without restricting their enjoyment of life. "We love our local Dunkin' Donuts," she laughs, "but we also prioritize fresh fruits and veggies." A defining aspect of Walker’s life in Bergen County is the strong sense of community. "I finally have that village of mothers willing to help out," she said, describing how they share playdates, healthy recipes, and group workouts. Walker recalls a challenging time: "The first year we moved here, I experienced a miscarriage, and the following year my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. My village was at my doorstep with flowers and open arms. CONTINUED >

A PERSONAL CAREGIVER'S JOURNEY

Walker’s commitment to health extends beyond her immediate family. After her mother battled breast cancer, Walker took on the role of caregiver, relocating her mom closer to her home for better support. "Food is medicine," she says, explaining how she guided her mother in adopting healthier eating habits during recovery. This experience reinforced her belief in nutrition and wellness as preventive measures. Her journey has inspired her to advocate for regular health screenings, a message that resonates deeply within her community. "We need to prioritize

our health, especially as women," she urges, reminding everyone of the necessity of proactive health management. By sharing her story, Walker hopes to inspire others to take charge of their health.

EMPOWERING LOCAL WOMEN

In addition to her work as a fitness model and trainer, Walker is a certified hypnobirthing educator and childbirth doula. She is passionate about empowering women during pregnancy and childbirth, believing that local resources should enhance the birthing experience. "Birth shouldn’t just happen to us; it should be an experience we actively engage in," she asserts. This philosophy underlines her commitment to supporting women in her community. Walker is also developing a guide to educate local mothers about their choices during labor and delivery, highlighting the role of fitness and mindfulness in creating a CONTINUED >

A LOCAL CALL TO WELLNESS

Walker’s journey is a vibrant reminder of the power of community, resilience, and informed health choices. By sharing her experiences, she encourages families in Bergen County to embrace their wellness journeys. Whether through community fitness classes, swapping healthy recipes at farmers' markets, or enjoying local trails, Walker invites everyone to invest in their well-being. Her message is clear: prioritize self-care, foster connections, and create a healthier future for ourselves and our children. As we navigate our own health and wellness challenges, Walker’s approach reminds us of the importance of supporting one another and celebrating our local gems. Let’s learn from Walker: invest in our health, nurture our relationships, and build a supportive network for ourselves and those around us. Together, we can create a vibrant community focused on wellness, proving that with resilience and support, a healthier future is not just a dream—it’s an achievable reality. A CANVAS OF Community The Previous Mural

The Allendale Mural Project showcases the power of community collaboration, art, and history. As the borough’s mayor, Amy Wilczynski, outlines the ambitious plans for this revitalization effort, it becomes clear that the project is not just about beautifying a wall—it's about uniting residents and honoring the town's heritage.

A LEGACY OF ART

Thirty years ago, the original mural, conceived by the late Styles Thomas, transformed an unsightly wall into a canvas celebrating Allendale's community and history. However, the elements took their toll, and over the years, the mural fell into disrepair. Wilczynski, who has dedicated over a decade to the Council and is now in her first term as mayor, felt compelled to restore this vital piece of local culture. "I think a project like this is something that makes Allendale special," she says. With an eye on beautification, she initiated conversations with residents about reinvigorating the mural just before the COVID-19 pandemic.

AN AMBITIOUS REVIVAL

The new mural, directed by renowned sculptor Simon Rigg, aims to be a stunning 3D artwork, or “bas-relief,” that will incorporate contributions from local students. Schools across the borough, CONTINUED >

including Hillside and Brookside, are participating in the project by creating clay panels that represent significant historical landmarks of Allendale, like the Highlands Presbyterian Church and the celery farm. Rigg shares, "One hundred fifty-five students, from third grade through senior year, learned unique methods of creating and glazing tiles using several tons of porcelain clay. This was a completely new experience for all the students, offering much more than just working with clay." "The kids worked on these clay components, and Simon fired them. This is such a unique opportunity for them," Wilczynski explains. The mural will serve as a mosaic of the community’s history, capturing its essence and inviting future generations to connect with their roots.

Artist Simon Rigg sharing his vision.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND FUNDRAISING

Community involvement is at the heart of the project. Beyond the artistic contributions, local residents have been encouraged to donate, with various fundraising initiatives underway. Wilczynski mentions that individuals who contribute will have their names featured around the mural, while larger donations will be commemorated on a bronze plaque. "We’re looking for corporate sponsors to help us complete the project," she shares, emphasizing the ongoing nature of fundraising efforts. The goal is to complete the installation by the first quarter of next year, weather permitting.

A CULTURAL LANDMARK FOR THE FUTURE

Once completed, the mural will not only restore a historical element but also create a mini pocket park in front of it, enhancing the community's public space. This new gathering area will invite families, friends, and visitors to appreciate the art and history that encapsulates Allendale’s identity. Wilczynski notes the profound impact this project has already had on students involved. "They’re excited to be part of history," she says, reflecting on how the experience empowers young residents. Many have expressed their eagerness to return with their own families one day to see their contributions immortalized.

MORE THAN JUST PAINT ON A WALL

The Allendale Mural Project reflects the dedication of residents and leaders like Mayor Wilczynski who understand that public art can foster pride and connection in a town. As the mural takes shape, it will stand as a vibrant reminder of Allendale’s past, present, and future—a visual narrative crafted by the hands of its community. Join the movement to revitalize Allendale’s history, one clay panel at a time.

Essential For Overall Wellness

A Passion For Bone Health Bone health is crucial to overall well-being. Our bones support our bodies, protect our organs, and store essential minerals like calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus, which the body releases as needed. Weak bones can lead to fractures, making bone health especially important, particularly for women.

PATRICIA DONOHUE’S PASSION

Patricia Donohue, APN, a nurse practitioner from New Jersey, is an expert in bone health. She obtained her nurse practitioner degree from

THE IMPORTANCE OF POST-OP CARE

While at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Donohue helped develop the Fracture Liaison Service, a program developed and supported by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Osteoporosis Foundation, which is now the Bone Health Osteoporosis Fountation. “The program helps identify patients in the hospital after they've sustained fractures that may be due to bone fragility or low-energy fractures,” she says. “These are fractures that happen from everyday activities like walking or falling—not from high-speed accidents.” This is critical because patients with fragility fractures are five times more likely to experience another fracture, leading to disability, higher healthcare costs, and even death, especially among older patients. “We’ve seen fractures in younger patients due to poor mineralization as well,” Donohue says. “Bone growth during childhood and adolescence is a key indicator of who will develop osteoporosis later in life. Osteoporosis affects more people than heart attacks, strokes, and breast cancer combined, yet it remains underdiagnosed and undertreated.” CONTINUED >

Columbia University School of Nursing. She primarily worked in trauma, surgery and the emergency room, first at Hackensack University Medical Center where she treated patients with traumatic bone injuries. She later moved to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where she continued her work in orthopedic trauma while focusing on bone mineralization. Through this experience, Donohue developed an interest in bone mineralization. “I was drawn to the subject,” she says. Her growing interest led her to earn a second master’s degree in public health. “Bone Mineralization can affect whether or not a patient sustains a fracture,” Donohue explains. “This is especially important in the premenopausal perimenopausal, and postmenopausal, women due to estrogen loss.” Donohue became passionate about metabolic bone health and bone metabolism. With decades of hands-on experience, she has lectured on the subject at both academic and community levels. JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/N ORTH E RNHI G HL A N D S

“BONE GROWTH DURING CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE IS A KEY INDICATOR OF WHO WILL DEVELOP OSTEOPOROSIS LATER IN LIFE. OSTEOPOROSIS AFFECTS MORE PEOPLE THAN HEART ATTACKS, STROKES, AND BREAST CANCER COMBINED, YET IT REMAINS UNDERDIAGNOSED AND UNDER-TREATED.” - PATRICIA DONOHUE, APN

One in two women will sustain a fragility or low-energy fracture in their lifetime, underscoring the importance of addressing bone health early.

ADVICE FOR PARENTS

Donohue advises parents to ensure their children get enough calcium, vitamin D, and exercise—especially during puberty when bones grow most rapidly. “During adolescence, your body deposits minerals into bones, making them stronger,” she says. “Bones that aren’t loaded properly with exercises lose mineralization. The best example is astronauts in space, who lose bone mass because of the lack of gravity.” By age 18 to 20, our bones are finished growing. “What we have at that age is what we have to draw on for the rest of our life,” Donohue says. “That’s why it’s especially important for parents to ensure children get enough calcium and vitamin D.” It’s also important for children to stay active.

WOMEN AND BONE HEALTH

Bone health is especially crucial for women in their 40s and 50s. “Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass during menopause,” Donohue says. “The women most at risk for bone fractures are those with a family history of fractures, a low body mass index (less than 18.5), or habits like smoking, excessive drinking, poor nutrition, or a sedentary lifestyle. Certain medications and conditions can also accelerate bone loss.” Women who are at high risk or undergoing early menopause should get a baseline bone density test. “Identifying bone loss early allows us to take action—through hormone replacement, calcium, vitamin D, exercise, and nutrition—to prevent osteoporosis,” Donohue says. Women at high risk should follow up with another test in a year or two to monitor bone density.

SOME BONE HEALTH ADVICE

Donohue recommends that women ask their doctor or gynecologist for a bone density test—especially women who are postmenopausal (T-score) or premenopausal (Z-score). “Women need to be proactive,” she says. “There has to be greater awareness about the importance of bone health.” While guidelines suggest women focus on bone health around age 60 to 65, studies by the North

American Menopause Society suggest that younger women should start taking proactive steps earlier. “Gynecologists and primary care doctors need to recognize there are lower dose estrogen alternatives, like patches and bioidenticals, that can help slow bone loss in younger women before they develop osteoporosis,” Donohue says.

FOR DONOHUE, IT’S ALL ABOUT HER PATIENTS

Now a board-certified acute care nurse practitioner at the Kayal Orthopaedic Center in New Jersey, Donohue brings her passion for bone health to her patients. “I’m from New Jersey, and this practice is unique because it offers a multidisciplinary approach, with orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors, and physical therapists all working together,” she says. “Dr. Kayal truly values bone mineralization.” For Donohue, it’s all about helping her patients. “I’m fortunate to be able to treat these patients in New Jersey just like I did in New York,” she says. “It’s rewarding to bring my passion and expertise to the center and to help the people of New Jersey.” For more info visit kayalortho.com. ELLIE MENTAL HEALTH In Allendale

REDEFINING THERAPY WITH AUTHENTICITY, ACCESSIBILITY, AND FLEXIBILITY ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLIE MENTAL HEALTH

Ellie Mental Health in Allendale is redefining mental health care with a fresh approach that emphasizes authenticity, accessibility, and flexibility. Opened in August 2023, the clinic has quickly become a trusted resource for Northern New Jersey residents seeking personalized therapy in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

A NEW KIND OF MENTAL HEALTH PRACTICE

Ellie Mental Health - Allendale at their Grand Opening. Barbaros Dinler and Russell Remy

Russell Remy, Business Director of Ellie Mental Health in Allendale, purchased the franchise two years ago with the goal of offering a meaningful service to the community. Remy realized there was a significant need for accessible, in-network mental health providers in the area, where many people struggle to find qualified professionals who accept their insurance. “We wanted to offer something impactful,” Remy explains. “Mental health affects so many people, and we wanted to create a space where therapy is both accessible and effective for everyone.” To make this vision a reality, Remy partnered with Barbaros Dinler, the Clinic Director, who brings over 22 years of experience in mental health and substance use counseling. Together, they launched Ellie Mental Health in Allendale, focused on providing therapy in a comfortable, approachable setting.

CREATING AN AUTHENTIC SPACE

One of the most distinguishing features of Ellie Mental Health is its commitment to authenticity. Dinler emphasizes the importance of therapists presenting themselves in a way that makes both them and their clients feel comfortable. “For years, the mental health profession has been associated with a formal, institutional vibe—therapists in suits behind big desks,” Dinler says. “At Ellie, we encourage therapists to dress how they feel comfortable, as long as it’s professional. It’s about creating a relaxed space where both therapists and clients feel at ease.” The clinic’s physical space is also designed to be welcoming, with bright colors and a minimalist, clutter-free environment. The goal is to make clients feel CONTINUED >

that they are the focus when they walk in, without distractions from the setting.

FOSTERING CREATIVITY IN THERAPY

Therapists at Ellie Mental Health are encouraged to bring creativity into their practice. Dinler believes that flexibility and adaptability in therapeutic methods are key to effective care. While each therapist has a primary therapeutic approach, they are encouraged to tailor their methods to meet the unique needs of each client. “We believe in using a variety of tools and techniques,” Dinler explains. “No two clients are the same, so we need to be able to adjust our approach to ensure the best outcome for each individual.” This flexibility also extends to the clinic's work environment. Dinler fosters an open-door policy, promoting communication and collaboration among staff. Each therapist receives regular supervision, and weekly team meetings provide a space for sharing experiences and mutual support.

Dinler also emphasizes that therapy isn’t about waiting for a dramatic transformation. “Therapy is about making incremental progress,” he explains. “The goal is to help clients see the small changes that contribute to their overall well-being.”

ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL

One of the key reasons Ellie Mental Health stands out is its commitment to accessibility. The clinic is fully in-network with most major insurance providers in New Jersey, ensuring that financial barriers don’t prevent people from seeking therapy. “We want to make therapy accessible to everyone,” Remy says. “We don’t want anyone to avoid seeking help because of insurance issues or cost. Our ‘Ellie Match’ system helps connect clients with the right therapist for their needs, and we work directly with insurance to make the process as smooth as possible.” This focus on accessibility is central to Ellie Mental Health’s mission. By removing financial and logistical barriers, the clinic aims to make therapy a resource that is available to anyone who needs it. With a growing team of six full-time therapists and plans for future expansion, Ellie Mental Health in Allendale is poised for continued success. Remy and Dinler remain committed to creating a safe, supportive environment where clients feel empowered to take control of their mental health. “We want to be a part of the community,” Remy says. “Whether you’re seeking therapy for the first time or looking for a fresh approach, we’re here to help you find the support you need.” For more information or to schedule a consultation, visit the Ellie Mental Health website elliementalhealth.com/locations/allendale-nj.

“No two clients are the same, so we need to be able to adjust our approach to ensure the best outcome for each individual.” - Barbaros Dinler

CHALLENGING MENTAL HEALTH MISCONCEPTIONS

One common misconception about therapy is that it’s always emotionally intense or centered on deep, raw emotions. Dinler works to challenge this by integrating humor and lightness into sessions when appropriate, helping clients feel that therapy can be a balanced, even enjoyable experience. “Many people expect therapy to be heavy or all about crying on a couch,” Dinler says. “While that can happen, therapy isn’t always about intense emotions. It’s about understanding yourself, building connections, and finding balance.”

A NEW APPROACH TO PHYSICAL THERAPY

Dr. Raffaele Lagonigro and Dr. Alyssa Kievit

FUNCTIONAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS 36

When it comes to physical therapy, Dr. Raffaele Lagonigro and Dr. Alyssa Kievit are reshaping traditional practices by focusing on functional fitness, injury prevention, and pelvic floor therapy. As co-owners of FORM Functional Health and Wellness, they aim to provide more than just recovery from inju-

physiology." This combination allows therapists to guide people toward functional fitness safely and effectively. At FORM Functional Health and Wellness, Lagonigro’s philosophy is reflected in their individualized care model. "We don’t just treat the injury," he says. "We look at the person as a

“YOU NEED A CUSTOMIZED PLAN AND FOCUSED ATTENTION TO ADDRESS EVERY ASPECT OF RECOVERY.” - RAFFAELE LAGONIGRO ries—they offer a holistic approach that helps individuals optimize their physical health for the long term.

A NEW VISION FOR PHYSICAL THERAPY

Raffaele Lagonigro, an orthopedic clinical specialist with 17 years of experience, advocates for a broader view of physical therapy. "Physical therapy has gotten a bad rap," he explains, noting that many people associate it solely with recovery after surgery or injury. "But physical therapy can do so much more— performance enhancement, injury prevention, and functional fitness." Lagonigro, who is board-certified in orthopedics, emphasizes that physical therapy isn’t just about healing; it’s about improving movement patterns to boost overall health. "Physical therapists are educated in the movement patterns that are used in fitness training" he says, "but with clinical knowledge in health sciences and exercise

whole—evaluating their movement patterns, addressing dysfunctions, and focusing on injury prevention." This approach has resonated with clients frustrated by traditional, insurance-based physical therapy models. "In a traditional PT setting, you might get just 10 minutes with a therapist before being handed off to an aide," Lagonigro notes. "At FORM, we spend a full hour with each client, customizing their treatment plan and addressing their unique goals."

A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO RECOVERY AND PERFORMANCE

Alyssa Kievit, a specialist in prenatal and postpartum pelvic floor therapy, shares Lagonigro’s commitment to personalized care. Her focus is on empowering women to regain control over their bodies during and after pregnancy. "Pelvic floor therapy is often misunderstood," she says. "People think it’s only for women who’ve had children, but it addresses a range of issues like incontinence, pelvic pain, and more."

Kievit works with active women, from athletes to those dealing with conditions like diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation from pregnancy). "We see many women eager to return to fitness after childbirth—whether it’s boot camps, Pilates, or weightlifting," she says. Despite growing awareness, pelvic health issues still carry stigma. "Many women are told their symptoms are just part of the process and that they must live with them," Kievit explains. "But these conditions are treatable." She educates patients that issues like stress incontinence and pelvic pain don’t have to be permanent.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FUNCTIONAL FITNESS

Dr. Raffaele Lagonigro, PT, OCS - Doctor of Physical Therapy, Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist

Lagonigro and Kievit believe functional fitness is essential for long-term health. "Injury prevention and performance optimization are just as important as recovery," says Lagonigro. "We want people to live without the fear of injury— whether lifting kids, working out, or training for a marathon." Their approach centers on individualized, hands-on care. "Recovery doesn’t happen in just 10 minutes," Lagonigro says. "You need a customized plan and focused attention to address every aspect of recovery."

A BROADER APPROACH TO PHYSICAL THERAPY

Lagonigro and Kievit aren’t criticizing traditional physical therapy but see their approach as an evolution of the field. "We want to educate people about what’s possible with physical therapy," says Kievit. "It’s not just about recovering from an injury; it’s about optimizing your body to perform at its best." Lagonigro adds that while traditional physical therapy is effective for some cases, functional fitness provides much more for those seeking injury prevention, performance enhancement, or a return to their favorite activities. "We provide a personalized approach that helps people stay injury-free and reach their goals," he says. Their community-centered approach has been embraced in Ridgewood, where sports play a big role. Lagonigro and Kievit have partnered with local teams to offer injury prevention screenings and sport-specific training. "We want to keep kids healthy and injury-free," Lagonigro says. "By screening

A CHANGING LANDSCAPE FOR PELVIC FLOOR THERAPY

Kievit is also witnessing increased demand for pelvic floor therapy, a field gaining more visibility in recent years. "Pelvic health is no longer a taboo topic," she says. "People are more open about issues like incontinence and pelvic pain, especially with the help of social media and online resources." This shift is essential for expanding access to care. "Many people think their symptoms are just part of life, but they don’t have to live with them," Kievit says. "Education is key."

LOOKING AHEAD

Lagonigro and Kievit are excited about the future of FORM Functional Health and Wellness. Their commitment to educating clients and the broader community about a more holistic approach to physical therapy remains at the core of their practice. "We’re not just treating injuries—we’re helping people lead healthier, more active lives," Lagonigro concludes. "That’s the message we want to spread." Through functional fitness, injury prevention, and pelvic floor therapy, FORM Functional Health and Wellness offers a new model for physical therapy that goes beyond recovery and helps individuals achieve their best, healthiest selves.
