Have you thought about the future of your business after retirement? Whether you own a small business, large business, or a family business, it is important to take the time to prepare a business succession plan. Having a succession plan in place helps business owners plan for the future and allows a smoother transition into retirement while promoting the company’s growth. A properly-prepared succession plan means a business owner can protect their legacy, and can often benefit from correcting or modifying tax structure. Even for businesses that have been operating for many years, it is never too late to start planning. Our attorneys can work with you through a step-by-step process to help you prepare for retirement and ensure the continued success of your business.

June is for celebrating fathers and the special men in our lives!
Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their homes and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
In my earliest days, one of my favorite memories of my dad is hanging out in the garage, tinkering with one of his vehicles, listening to ZZ Top or Led Zeppelin. As I grew older, he could be found in the stands of every single swim meet. The phrase, "the days are long and the years are short," is never truer than when considering my time with my father.
As you'll see in this issue, we celebrate the men who not only make a difference in their family's lives, but also their community's well-being. You drive by these businesses every day, perhaps wondering what it is they do! We hope you enjoy a peek behind the curtain, as they share what inspires them and brings them joy, and just how much they enjoy enriching the local community.
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you, as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

A&H Auto Repair
Q&A with Owner Lou Robinson
TELL ME ABOUT A&H AUTO REPAIR
A&H Auto Repair is an independent Automotive repair shop in Northampton that specializes in Honda and Acura vehicles. I have been a Factory trained Honda Technician for more than 30 years, so when I opened the shop it only made sense to work on the vehicles that I knew inside and out.
WHAT SERVICES DOES A&H AUTO REPAIR PROVIDE?
At A&H we provide all of the Factory recommended maintenance from oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid exchanges. We also perform engine and transmission repair, brake jobs, exhaust repair, suspension work, tune-ups, and diagnostic services.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START?
I got my start working on cars when I was a kid. Back then cars were a lot easier to work on and my father did most of his own repairs. He would do tune-ups, brake jobs, some bodywork, and even an engine swap in the driveway. I always enjoyed watching and helping him, and from there it was all I ever wanted to do.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO BUSINESS FOR YOURSELF?
Well I had worked at the local Honda Dealership for more than 30 years and was getting pretty burnt out. One night I was at my friend Mark's house and he mentioned to me that Larry, the gentleman that rented the bays in the back of Mark's Motors, was getting ready to retire. I told him I would be interested in moving into the space if he did. He introduced me to Larry and we talked about what he wanted for his business, and it was more than reasonable so I went home and talked to my wife about it and she pretty much pushed me into it. I was very nervous about leaving a job after all of that time but it has worked out better than I could have imagined.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
I have always loved working on cars but the thing I enjoy most is my customers. I have really great customers, many of them I would even consider friends.

Ford of Northampton Innovates
ARTICLE BY JANICE BEETLE

FAMILY-OWNED DEALERSHIP FINDS WAYS TO ENHANCE SERVICE
Ford of Northampton knows people are busy and struggle to get their cars in for repairs or scheduled maintenance. One new Ford innovation makes life easier.
If customers can’t find the time to get their cars in for service, someone from Ford of Northampton will pick their vehicle up at their place of business, repair it, and return it before they leave their desk. Likewise, if customers drop a car off and have no ride back home, a Ford employee will drive them there and pick them up again when their car is ready.
“We provided this service in the past for people who needed it, but now Ford Motor Company has gotten behind the idea that people need help sometimes. We’re offering pick-up and drop-off as a special service in conjunction with giving rides,” says Scott Sarat, owner of the dealership since 2010. He adds, “We’re a family-owned business geared toward doing what’s best for the Valley. That’s how we like to do things.”
When Sarat bought the business with his two brothers and his father in 2010, they held three generations of knowledge and over 90 years of experience in founding and operating Ford and Lincoln dealerships across the region. “The future is promising, as a fourth generation of family will be in line to enter the business,” Sarat says, noting his daughter and five nieces and nephews will one day be old enough to get involved.
Sarat says the family owns other Ford and Lincoln dealerships, but they aren’t a mega-conglomerate. “There’s a family member in each store,” he says.
Ford of Northampton was founded in 1986 by a previous owner and was located on Damon Road in a small

service repair facility. When the Sarats purchased the business, they had growth and expansion in mind. In 2012, they moved to 968 Bridge Road, and they’ve since grown their customer base, service capacity, and parts distribution.
Currently, they employ 40 full- and part-time staff members, and EVs—electric vehicles—and the availability of commercial vehicles are focus areas.
“Ford is one of the first auto manufacturers to go all-in on the all-EV platform and has invested billions and billions in factories and research and development and testing. Ford has also asked their dealers to invest at least a million dollars, if not more, per dealer in updating their facilities and establishing infrastructure to service EV charging, sales, and service,” Sarat says.
Ford of Northampton is on board and is currently planning to invest in highlevel, rapid-charge stations that will be open to the public in the near future. Sarat says Ford has several electric vehicles already on the market, such as the Mustang Mach-E and the Ford F-150 Lightning pick-up.
“The demand was so high for these electrical vehicles that Ford of Northampton is currently sold out. We can assure that more are coming soon from the factory, and custom orders are always an option at Ford of Northampton,” Sarat says.
Investing and increasing the availability of commercial vehicles has also been part of the Sarat family’s business plan since the start. “In the Valley, every day, you see plumbers, electricians, builders, landscapers, and other business people on the roads. All these businesses need new vehicles to support their commercial fleet,” Sarat says. “That’s what we’re looking to provide—sales and service. We are investing in that.”
Ford of Northampton is stocking commercial medium-duty and heavyduty vehicles from pick-up trucks to cargo vans to dump trucks. “You can pull in and buy a sedan, an SUV, or a sporty convertible. You also can buy any commercial vehicle Ford offers for business and service companies,” Sarat says.

Additionally, supporting the community is important to Ford of Northampton. In past years, they were able to combine their vehicles with doing good.
As part of Ford’s Drive For Your School events, Ford of Northampton would take several of their vehicles to a local school and invite the public to come test drive them; for each test drive, Ford donated a sum of money to that school. Sarat says these fundraisers, which happened in Southampton, Northampton, Westfield, Granby, and Easthampton, raised about $7,000 each for the sponsoring school.
Sarat says the business also supports the fundraising efforts of local hospitals and nonprofit organizations and the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event. “It has always been important to us to stay involved where we live and work,” he says.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF AND/OR YOUR UPBRINGING.
Born and raised in Easthampton, MA, I still reside there today with my wife Courtney and our two dogs, Dexter and Rocco. As a lifelong resident of Easthampton, and a 2004 graduate from the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst, my ties to the community run deep.
WHAT IS YOUR CAREER?
I am a financial advisor with Edward Jones Investments. I spend most of my time helping people plan and invest for retirement, which is our most common client goal.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FINANCIAL PLANNER AND FINANCIAL ADVISOR?
A financial advisor might be able to give you a good stock or mutual fund for a certain situation. Financial planning is much more detailed, accounting for assets, liabilities, inflation, growth, financial goals, life expectancy, investment objectives and tolerance for risk. At Edward Jones we use a holistic approach, allowing our clients to put their entire financial picture into one plan, without necessarily holding all of their assets with us.
WHAT SERVICES DOES AN EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR PROVIDE?
We’ve found that our clients’ top financial goals are 1) saving for retirement, 2) living in retirement, 3) planning for the unexpected, 4) college savings, 5) estate planning.
CHRISTOPHER HUXLEY
“We are blessed to live in an area rich with small business, dining, art studios and the like. Courtney and I take every opportunity to pick up some steaks from the local butcheria or a pint of ice cream from Mt. Toms!”
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER?
The most enjoyable part of my job is watching people achieve their most important financial goals, namely living the lifestyle they’ve chosen in retirement. It takes a lot of hard work and planning to get there, so to see someone get to live out their dream is by far the most rewarding part of my job.
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU FROM OTHER FINANCIAL ADVISORS?
I like to talk to people on a level that they can understand, empowering them to partner with us as we plan for life’s most important financial goals. A good analogy might be when my car breaks down. I don’t have the ability or skills to fix it, so I pay the mechanic. Although I don’t understand everything they do, I’ve got a mechanic that I trust who explains to me what went wrong, what they did to fix it, and if there’s anything I can do to prevent a similar breakdown in the future.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN THE LOCAL AREA/WHAT OTHER SMALL BUSINESSES DO YOU SUPPORT?
We are blessed to live in an area rich with small business, dining, art studios and the like. Courtney and I take every opportunity to pick up some steaks from the local butcheria or a pint of ice cream from Mt. Toms!

Get to Know Realtor CRAIG DELLA PENNA
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START?
I used to work in the RR industry and I was put under contract by a regional publisher to write a series of books about the history of old rail lines and their conversions to bike and hike trails. I then was hired by a national organization that helped communities move these projects forward. I was an organizer there for 7 years and became a ‘battle-hardened veteran’ of almost every rail trail to-do within 150 miles of our valley.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
When they moved the N.E. office to be in PA, I instead became a Realtor with a special niche practice. I love to specialize in the sale of houses near rail trails. This was of course despite what all the antis I met over the years said was possible. They always said if the trail was built, their house would be unsellable. I’m the 1st Realtor in the U.S. with this niche and I’ve proven them all wrong. AND the best part is: they know it.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR JOB?
Not letting my buyers or sellers get on the stressful ‘Roller Coaster’ of ups and downs in a real estate deal. Communication is key. And text is not an appropriate means of communication.
Text is best used for “Honey, bring home some milk,” not for “Craig, help me sell my $750K house!”
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU FROM OTHER REAL ESTATE AGENTS?
I’m a Certified Residential Specialist, CRS Realtor®, not merely a RE Agent. Only 2% of Realtors in this marketplace have a CRS designation. That is the Ph.D. of RE designations. It starts there. And I don’t golf. Not old enough yet.
WHAT DO YOU WISH OTHERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Though I have written 5 books, the really odd thing in my life is that five books have been written that feature ME as a case-study in various realms, including three about my innovative Real Estate practice.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN THE LOCAL AREA/WHAT OTHER SMALL BUSINESSES DO YOU SUPPORT?
When a local land trust wants to buy property that is on the open market, I will come and work for them as their buyer agent. I pull the deal together and then after closing, donate all commission to the land trust. THAT is my 2nd most fave transaction.

Opening Days” on Wednesday, May 24th, and Thursday, May 25th, both at 10:30am. These will be annual field trips for local elementary and middle schools. Each school will be able to paint an unfinished bat in a school spirit or baseball theme. The players will use that bat during the game with the keepsake given back to the school after the game. Opening Night will take place on Saturday, May 27th, at 6:30pm.
OWNER CHRIS THOMPSON TALKS JOURNEY, NEW DEVELOPMENTS
When Chris Thompson, owner of the Westfield Starfires, founded the city’s summer collegiate baseball team in 2019, there was no blueprint to follow. In just five years, the team has made a significant impact on the community and has achieved numerous milestones, on and off the field. The Starfires, who play in the Futures League (a wooden bat summer collegiate baseball league in New England), have propelled athletes to the pros, all while becoming a beloved fixture of the Westfield community.
Last summer, the Starfires saw two standouts taken in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft. Alumnus Reggie Crawford was drafted in the 1st round (30th overall) by the San Francisco Giants and Pat Gallagher was drafted in the 11th round (338th overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays. “I think it’s a great opportunity for players in the Futures League to compete at this level for 64 games in front of MLB scouts.”
The 5th anniversary season, presented by Westfield Bank, will kick off with two “Kids
There are many theme nights to take place at the ballpark this season. The fan favorite will again be the WG&E Post-Game Fireworks Show on Friday, June 9th. Last summer, 2,000 fans attended to make it one of the largest crowds in the history of Bullens Field. “It was standing room only. We were packed like sardines,” Thompson said.
A new partnership with the North Elm Butcher Block will significantly upgrade the Starfires concession operation. “Dan Puza has taken his business to a new level, so we plan to offer all the Butcher Block favorites. He’s got a smoker - so brisket, pulled pork sandwiches, bases-loaded fries, mac and cheese bowls and sausage dogs, to name a few. It was imperative to take the fan experience to the next level, especially concessions. This is a game changer.”
The best-selling beer at the ballpark, the Starfires IPA, will also be back. On Saturday, July 29th, fans will be able to sample the IPA, as well as local craft brews, at “Get Drafted,” a pre-game Bullens Brewfest in the beer garden.
Making a comeback is the Starfires Summer Camp for two weeks in July for boys and girls ages 6-12. The Starfires themselves will have 10 returning players, as well as manager Kyle Dembrowski and Vice President of Baseball

Operations Hunter Golden. Seth Dussault will return to the mic as the “Voice of the Starfires” on the Futures League Network.
The Starfires will continue to offer fan experiences to youth sports organizations, among other groups, including on-field recognition and in-between inning promotions. Thompson said that over the years, he has continued his appreciation for the marketing partnerships that have kept the team running. “We have a very strong corporate base here in Western Massachusetts. I think from the outset, the goal was to be connected with the community, the city of Westfield, and beyond. I think franchises like ours around the country are only successful if you have community support.”
In recognition of the team’s ties with Barnes Air National Guard Base, the Starfires earned the FCBL Community Relations Award last year for its Military Appreciation Game to support the 104th Fighter Wing. The team itself was named after the Lockheed F-94 Starfire. Mascot Stanley Starfire, a lovable black squirrel character, is the namesake of Stanley Park. “It was important from inception to pay homage to the local community to help tell our story.”

Field greens, topped with diced tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion and gorgonzola cheese, served with their house-made golden balsamic vinaigrette.
