February 2023 LIFESTYLE LETTER
PUBLISHER
Let's Show Our Local Businesses Some Love! I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. Torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a simple night at home? To gift a token of affection or just say a kind word and perform an act of service? I'm either 0 to 100. You and I will individually arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to cherish this reminder, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight businesses in the community of Northampton and its surrounding cities stretching from Easthampton to Florence. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in our community. The Rose Thief creates floral designs that are unique expressions of class and passion using creative arrangements and bouquets. Elements Hot Tub & Spa is the perfect place to sink back into a bubbly oasis during a private steam room and/or hot tub session. We love holistic health and thanks to the expertise provided by Alternative Health in Easthampton, nearby community members can learn about natural, preventative care. Ever heard of a float spa or sensory deprivation tank? Now is your time to try it! Euphoria Float Spa is the area’s first premier facility to feature floating, massage, reiki, and more. Lastly, if you’re looking for a sweet treat then try the delicious handcrafted confections at Firetype Chocolate! While we teeter between the chill of winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. Not only the ones in your home but in your neighborhood passing on the street. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in love for our local businesses month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love more than you did before.

THE ROSE THIEF
The Rose Thief – it sounds like it might be the title of a mystery novel, an espionage movie, or even the name of a song. Instead, it’s the intriguing name of a floral studio in Hatfield. Floral designer Belinda Bennett said the creative and unusual name for her business was inspired by childhood memories of innocently stealing flowers from a neighbor’s garden to give to her mother (this writer confesses to having done the same), and “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” a song by musician Nick Cave. “The name Rose Thief is a bit more creative and reflects my work and what I do,” Belinda said, explaining that roses are always the signature flower in her arrangements. “I love roses and you can get them in so many colors and varieties. They are timeless and you can find them year-round.” Belinda said she likes to think creatively about each arrangement she makes. For example, she said she loves reflexed roses - roses that are manipulated in such a way as to make a more structured and bigger bloom. “You pop the petal back on the rose, making it three times as big – and you can see all the colors inside,” she explained. The creative side of the business is what Belinda loves most. “Bringing someone’s idea to life - from small bouquets to large installations, is really exciting for me,” she said. When asked if she has a favorite flower, Belinda said that while she doesn’t really have a favorite, she is drawn to the classic, velvety, deep burgundy rose. “We’ll have plenty of roses for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day,” she added. Color will be big, too, she said, as people are tiring of winter and looking forward to colorful flowers for spring. “I also create a unique statement arrangement for Valentine’s Day and for Mother’s Day,” Belinda said. She also creates seasonal arrangements – usually designer’s choice. It was after the move to Hatfield that Belinda decided to start her own business, and The Rose Thief was born. “I do love it here,” she said. “Everything fell into place easily,” Belinda said of The Rose Thief studio overlooking the Connecticut River where she makes her floral magic happen.

The studio is also where she meets with clients for wedding consultations and where she collaborates with photographers on creative projects. “Hatfield is such a beautiful place, surrounded by historical homes and the view of the river,” she said. Belinda is looking forward to the beginning of the 2023 wedding season. “I love the traveling aspect of it, which takes me to all corners of New England.” Her designs for each wedding are unique to the couple. “The flowers should be about what you love and reflect who you are on your wedding day,” No matter what the occasion she designs flowers for, Belinda describes them as ephemeral. “It’s all about creating a moment,” she said.

THE COMBINATION OF HOT TUB AND MASSAGE IS THE PERFECT RECIPE FOR RELAXATION

S PA DAY | WEL L N ESS
It’s February, the last whole month of winter. Amherst has an exceptional spa where you can take someone you love for a quiet evening of connection with tea or cocoa, a fireplace, luxurious massage, soft robes, and a hot tub under a clear starry night or even a gentle snowfall. It’s also a place individuals come for wellness and healing. Their therapists are top-notch, and they only hire the best in the industry. Elements Hot Tub Spa is where you can let winter melt off of you. When you first walk in, you notice the southwestern Sedona decor and friendly staff, which is wonderfully warming. Sue and Todd, the owners, purchased Elements in August 2019. They fell in love with the spa and have committed to maintaining the original vision built by the
Owners Sue and Todd Thibodeau
previous owners. It is loved by residents of Hampshire County, as well as the guests who happily travel 1-2 hours to visit this 15-year Amherst staple. Soft music trickles into your ears. You have arrived, and now is your time to share together or enjoy blissfully alone. The spa consists of private hot tub rooms, massage rooms, and an esthetics room. Each hot tub room has a theme that connects to the overall name of the spa; Elements of nature: Water, Fire, Spirit, Earth & Air. Guests rent the tub rooms in increments of 30 or 60 minutes and each tub room is entirely private. Regular hot tub usage benefits are: Easing stress, relieving sore muscles and symptoms of chronic pain, and improving sleep. CONTINUED > FEBR UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Sue explained, “The combination of the hot tub, sauna, or steam before the massage is the perfect recipe to warm up your muscles so they are ready for a more comfortable treatment with longer-lasting effects.” The “Water Room” has an aromatherapy steam shower and a hot tub. The “Fire Room” has a hot tub and infrared sauna, which, as Todd explained, offers benefits of detoxification, cardiovascular & fitness benefits, decreased pain & inflammation, and cognitive & mental health benefits. The “Spirit” room has an infrared sauna. The “Earth” and “Air” rooms have outdoor hot tubs for those nights when you want to see the stars, feel the fresh air, and let the falling snowflakes melt on your shoulders in your little hideaway. “We thoroughly clean each tub and filters every night. We use chlorine to sanitize the tubs, and our staff tests the water for the perfect chemical balance between every tub use. Each tub room has a shower, and we require every guest to take a cleansing shower before they enter the tubs.” Elements Hot Tub Spa is family business, independently-owned and operated, with a single location in Amherst, and is not affiliated with Elements Massage. Todd said, “We distinguish ourselves from the franchise businesses with our experienced licensed massage therapists who are independent contractors. We strive to hire the best and let them build their own business within a business.” They provide a wealth of massage services such as relaxation, deep tissue, sports massage, CBD, prenatal, Ayurvedic body treatments, cupping & craniosacral therapy. They also have an esthetician who offers facials and waxing with organic skincare products guests can feel good about putting on their body. Every facial comes with a skin analysis and is personalized for their skin needs and what best suits their goals. Product recommendation and education is included. The benefits of regular facials include skin exfoliation, improved blood flow, skin tightening, absorption, acne treatment, and anti-aging benefits. Soon they will be offering lash extensions and more exciting services to follow. As a reward to regular customers, Elem ents Hot Tub & Spa offers packages of ‘Buy 5 of 1 Service & Get the 6th Free’. So give yourself permission to be nurtured, or purchase a gift certificate for a special someone who deserves to be pampered. Appointments can be booked online at Elementshottubspa.com or taken by phone at (413) 256-8827.

Norwottuck Rail Trail
A Special Gift to Our Communities One of the most notable things about New England that most people don’t realize is the abundance of unused former steam railroad corridors. In fact, since the early 1960’s, there have been over 70,000 miles of former steam railroad corridor taken out of the nation’s inventory, and the majority of this mileage is here in the Northeast. In the 1970’s, the MBTA purchased a slew of old Boston &
Maine and New Haven Railroad branch lines in over 60 communities in Eastern Mass. Most of these were dormant or abandoned, and though they didn’t know what would happen with them, a rail trail wasn’t really thought of. Though there were a few rail trails created from former RRs, in a few scattered places in New England; it was not a common thing. So those dormant branch

lines in EMass, complete the rails still in place, sat dormant, forgotten and the forest began to take over and overgrow these rights of way. There are over 1,000 miles of former RRs in Mass owned by either a state agency or a utility. They are slowly being redeveloped into trails. They don’t lead to forgotten, coal-mine branch lines where no one lives, this network led to huge antediluvian mill complexes which today have been largely converted to apartments or condos or offices. The network of off-road paths that can be built in southern New England is simply unmatched anywhere else in North America and they connect right where people live, work, play, and attend school. We live on Chestnut Street in Northampton’s historic Civil War industrial village center of Florence, and on the trail adjacent to our house, each day begins the same: Starting around 5:30AM (or the crack of dawn) joggers and power-walkers pass by. By 7:30AM, the dog walkers are out and by 8AM, school kids are on the trail. In fact, scores of kids. Most are walking, but a substantial number are on bikes and even a smattering on roller blades. So many kids here walk/bike/blade to school that I would hazard a guess and say two school buses aren’t needed because of this safe route to school. Around 8:30AM, a number of utilitarian bikers ride by—people biking to work. At midday, the users are mostly retirees and mothers pushing baby carriages. The dog walkers are back out late in the afternoon. Finally, the evening strollers, joggers, and walkers pass by.
To call these facilities “bike paths” is a misnomer, as there are too many walkers and joggers. In fact, to call them “recreation trails” is misleading as well, as they are true transportation facilities. The city has come around to this realization as because several years ago, they began plowing the trail in the winter so it can be relied upon as a “Safe Route to School.” On weekends, the complexion of the path changes. There are more bicyclists, who tend to be tourists, but the local joggers, power-walkers, strollers, and dog walkers are still out there in force. Being only 8 feet away, our house was one of the closest houses ever to have a railroad built next to it and, conversely, it is certainly one of the closest houses to sit next to a rail trail. In fact, when our house was built, the railroad officials stepped up and reinforced all the plaster ceilings with lath strips nailed up from below. Since that wasn’t attractive, they then hung taut, but flexible canvas a few inches below the reinforced plaster ceiling. The reinforced ceiling has held, and the canvas ceilings were able to flex. The trains went away in 1969, and the trail was built and opened in 1983—after several years of passionate debate I might add. Now, we’ve been here only since 2001, but with only bikes and pedestrians going by today, I can attest that the house doesn’t shake anymore. We love living here - 8 feet from the trail!

Healing Holistically with Alternative Health When you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired ARTICLE BY MINDY DOW | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT KATTLER PHOTOGRAPHY
Just a few blocks from downtown Easthampton on Main Street is Alternative Health. Services are available for anyone of any age, who seeks health-related therapy, and a clear path to optimal wellness, that is informative and more nurturing than what you find in a traditional medical practice. John Hoime shared his story of what inspired him to start this business 23 years ago. “When I was 49 years old, I was told by a doctor that I would not live. Because I had high blood pressure and cholesterol,
and I was borderline pre-diabetic, I was very anxious. Unknowingly, I took all the meds doctors told me to because I trusted them. Until that day when this particular doctor told me that.” He went on, “I threw out all my medications. My younger sister referred me to a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Linda Nelson. I met with her, and she looked at me and said, “You have Candida.” She told me what I had to do, which I didn’t want to hear, and I told her I wouldn’t do it. She told me, “Well when you’re sick CONTINUED >

enough, you will. Or you’ll die a premature death. Or worse yet, you’ll be debilitated, and someone will have to take care of you.” So I told her, “I’ll try it.” She said, “You don’t try it. You either do it or you don’t. If you’re not going to do it, don’t waste your time, don’t waste your money, and don’t waste my time.” I did exactly what she told me to, and I haven’t taken medicine in 22 years. So after I got well, I started contacting her and asking her questions. She offered to work with me and asked if I would be willing to study and change careers so that I could help other people do what she helped me do. And that’s how I got started.” Change is hard. John and his staff know this personally because they choose to use the same program as their clients for themselves and their families. This is a place to visit for preventative health therapy because they practice what they preach, and understand the struggle of changing from poor habits to establishing new ones. They are a compassionate group of people. A visit to Alternative Health begins with a consultation where they use the breakthrough ZYTO software program, which reads the bio-communication electrical responses in a client’s body. They ask a series of questions to help narrow down the root causes of symptoms someone is experiencing, and the software program gives feedback. Then the practitioner

designs a personalized plan for reaching optimal health. “The average length of a program is about 2-3 months,” John said. “We also offer monthly virtual classes. I work with everything from basic weight loss to every autoimmune deficiency known to man to rebuild the immune system.” Clients get a lot of encouragement and personal attention from the staff to help keep them on track. Regarding the affordability of the programs, John said, “Health insurance doesn’t take us. It is out of pocket. Insurance companies make their money on sick care, not preventive health wellness.” To help people afford the programs, Alternative Health offers personalized payment plans with no interest fees. They rarely advertise because about 95% of the business is through referrals. What was most impressive was the genuine friendliness of the staff and the knowledge and integrity of how they practice. This business is founded on a passion of helping others build holistic health awareness so everyone can live more joyfully and feel fantastic about it. ESCAPE TO YOUR OWN OASIS FLOAT TANKS, MASSAGE, & REIKI
S ELF CA R E | WEL L N ESS
Euphoria Float Spa is a boutique day spa balanced by a hometown feel. This center is the heart of the floating scene here in Northampton and the first float tank facility in Western Mass having opened in 2016. Its current owners, Stefan Sabbagh and Shannon Rogers, help others achieve physical wellness and peace of mind. If you seek a tranquil getaway without having to reserve a resort, Euphoria Float Spa is your escape to paradise. A sensory deprivation tank (AKA “float tank”) is a zero-gravity environment designed to help your mind and body recover. It’s beneficial for everyone: floating improves cognitive function, creativity, and memory. It’s a moment to give your brain a rest and absorb new information. In a world where we’re addicted to technology, screens, and stimulation it is no surprise what an hour of stillness will do for you. People wanting to focus on self-care come here to reach a state of relaxation. This includes athletes recovering their muscles, pregnant
women benefitting from the buoyancy, military members suffering from PTSD, as well as business professionals visualizing their next strategy for success. In a float tank, the ability to recoup your muscles is 4X faster. This does wonders chronic pain and arthritis. Behind the scenes, your mind and body are at work reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) and releasing dopamine and endorphins (the feel good hormones). You are steered into a mindful state where your brain slows down its internal processing. If you enter the tank and feel bored or anxious it means your mind is reaching. This is a mental battle, and an example of what happens when we need to take a break. You’re encouraged to try more than once because floating is a journey like any practice of meditation. First-time floaters call with concerns about sitting in a dark, small space or the inability to float. Not only does the density of epsom salt pull toxins from your body, it’s the secret to what keeps you laying effortlessly afloat! The tanks at Euphoria look more like cabins (not pods). Here, the space inside the cabin averages 5’ x 8’. This area is secured by a glass door that peers into your spacious shower room. When you are floating, you are suspended in water that’s heated to the average skin temperature. Your body’s boundary melts into the weightlessness of water. There is little to no external stimuli such as sights or sounds, and your sense of touch softens. Floaters can illuminate their setting with colored lights or mellow music for added company while slipping into a meditative state. Otherwise, a float session is nearly the only time the brain is not overloaded with stimulation such as lights, sounds, flavors, scents, and sensations.
Shannon Rogers, Co-owner and Manager
Customized packages and day spa options are available by adding on reiki and massage. Euphoria Float Spa often has duets on a date or pairs from friends and families call in to request assistance on scheduling their next spa day. Couple’s Massage, Swedish Massage, and Sports Massage are examples of offerings available. Pair these with a sumptuous body scrub or seasonal wrap and float session to complete a full day of self-care and pampering. Recently, Euphoria featured two popular seasonal scents: a Gingerbread-scent blended into body scrubs and oils plus a Farmhouse Fresh serum smelling of whipped vanilla chantilly creme infused into the wraps and lotions. Each season Euphoria crafts superior scents to offer during their services. This spring may bring bright, floral fragrances or fresh, green, clean aromas that will tantalize your senses! For self-service booking, visit the website online at EuphoriaFloatSpa.com. Newcomers with questions, or those seeking arrangements for a full spa day, can call the Spa Coordinators at (413) 586-8086.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET
3 WAY S T O O R G A N I Z E A N D
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

Firetype Chocolate #ROUTE10CORRIDOR ARTICLE & MONTHLY @HELLOFOODREVIEWS COLUMN FEATURING HOT SPOTS FROM WESTFIELD TO NORTHAMPTON! “New name. Same spice.” Previously known as Heavenly Chocolate, Firetype Chocolate’s still got it! I tried 5 different chocolate truffles. Each was so unique and rich in flavor.
