Perry and Judy Messer

Fitness is a family affair at the Northampton Athletic Club. Ever since they opened their doors 40 years ago, husband and wife Perry and Judy Messer along with their staff have been keeping hundreds of families in and around Hampshire County healthy and fit. Judy, a former World-Champion water skier, met Perry when he was training athletes at the same facility in West Palm Beach, Florida where she worked-out. The couple later moved to Northampton with the goal of opening a facility to bring health and fitness to the area. They opened the Northampton Athletic Club on North King St in July of 1982. Perry said many individuals and families who joined in that first year are still members of the club today. In 1999, the Messers bought a former warehouse on King St, gutted it and turned it into their vision for a state-of-theart fitness facility with expanded offerings for members.

“We went from 10,000 square feet to a 30,000-plus square feet facility with a lot of added amenities,” Perry said. They added larger and more spacious men’s and women’s locker rooms with steam and sauna in both, and members now have an array of options to choose from to keep fit. A 40-foot indoor rock-climbing wall - the first in the Pioneer Valley - an indoor basketball court (where pickleball is also played), plus state-ofthe-art fitness equipment by Life Fitness, Cybex, Nautilus, and Peloton. In addition, the Northampton Athletic Club offers a variety of group fitness classes that include Pilates, Yoga, Barre, Zumba, Cycle, HIIT and Sculpt, Step, and Bootcamp. There’s more - Olympic weights, functional training equipment such as Kettlebells, physio balls, sandbags and weighted tires. For busy parents who worry about finding time to fit workouts or classes

into their schedules, the Messers added an indoor play structure, along with childcare services. Parents can also book children’s birthday parties in the space. No matter your age or fitness level, there is something for everyone at NAC. It’s all about providing you with the tools to keep yourself active, Perry said. “Our staff teaches members how to use the equipment safely to help them meet their fitness goals.” “We’re fortunate to have had many of our staff, instructors and trainers with us for years,” Perry said. “Trends in exercise have changed over the years, and our staff stays up-to-date, getting certified yearly,” he added. Family isn’t just Perry and Judy – daughter Jamie teaches a spin class every Monday; son Jay, who has a degree in

Sports Management, works full time at NAC, and daughter Jenna met her fiancé there. It’s also the family of members and staff that make the club what it is. “The sense of community is what I appreciate,” Perry said. “It’s been nice to make long-standing connections with families in our community over the years. We know a lot of people by name. It’s a joy to live and work in the area and to be able to bring health and fitness to the community." Note: The Messers also own Hampshire Athletic Club in Amherst. NAC members can use the facility which has many of the same great amenities plus an indoor Olympic pool for an additional $10 a month.

THE LONG GAME I’ve been through cancer, knee issues, and a constant ringing in my head – the same “thousand natural shocks” as everyone else. Maybe it’s because I’m such a movement junkie, but I want to keep moving and enjoying being alive for as long as I can, and I want to help other people do the same. The Long Game is about developing a practice that makes us feel better now, and gives us the best chance of extending our health span as far into the future as possible – physically, cognitively, emotionally, and energetically. My role is to provide people with useful, science-based information through education, physical training, and coaching.

TEACHING, TRAINING & COACHING FOR LONGEVITY WITH JIM LOBLEY

EXP E RT H E LP | FITNESS

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF. WHAT DID YOU DO IN YOUR "PAST LIFE?" Oh, all sorts of things! I’ve been working as a personal trainer for the past 4 years, but I’ve been studying movement and the body for most of my adult life – dance, yoga, martial arts, and more recently strength and endurance training. Now, at 61, I’m increasingly interested in training for longevity.

WHAT IS THE LONG GAME AND WHY DID YOU GET STARTED? Well, first of all, it’s a metaphor. When you’re playing the long game, you’re making small changes in the present, knowing the payoff is way out ahead of you. It shifts your perspective, thinking long term. I think it’s important as we age to look at how we’re holding the aging process itself because it’s easy to get dragged down. Our bodies are changing in ways we’re not necessarily happy about, but science is showing us that we have a lot more control over the process than we think.

WHO’S YOUR TARGET MARKET? I’m doing a lecture series on longevity at Forbes Library in Northampton this winter mainly for women in their 40s - 70s who are pretty active and invested in maintaining their vitality as they age. The information is just as relevant for men, but that’s not who’s showing up. In reality, the target market is anyone who’s interested in extending their health span.

SO WHAT KIND OF TRAINING WORK DO YOU DO WITH PEOPLE? I help people connect to their instinct to move. Strength is an outcome of moving, not an end in itself. I’ve developed a technique called Dynamic Movement Training - my own brand of strength and mobility work. I also do training specific for brain health and for balance. I teach classes in a practice I’ve developed called Dynamic Flow that involves swinging around a soft weighted rubber ball. It’s really fun, feels great, and people love it!

YOU MENTIONED COACHING… I work with coaching clients 1:1 to design a sustainable longevity practice based on what they enjoy, what they’re willing to do, and what

they want to try. A lot of it is practical, but we also look at the deeper questions – how is aging affecting my sense of who I am, what’s important to me, what do I want this next chapter of my life to look like?

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THE LONG GAME? I want to create a community of people who are supporting one another in various aspects of longevity practice like sleep, nutrition, movement and exercise, lifestyle, and even crazy stuff like swimming in really cold water (cold therapy)! It’s really about daily habits. What am I doing today to feel alive, take care of myself and support my brain and body in staying healthier, longer?

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT YOU OR REACH OUT? Visit my website at Thelonggame.coach or email: Jim@thelonggame.coach. You can also call or text at (413) 695-8766. You can also catch my next lecture, “Smart Body – Healthy Brain: Using Movement to Boost Brain Health” at Forbes Library on Thursday, January 12th at 6PM or Saturday, January 14th at 10:30AM.

Whole Body Wellness with Synergy Physical Therapy in Northampton

ARTICLE BY JIM LYONS PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY

20

FAM ILY CA R E | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EARLY CAREER IN PHYSICAL THERAPY AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO PURSUE THE DISCIPLINE. Synergy Physical Therapy celebrates 11 years in Northampton! We started our clinic to get away from the corporate Physical Therapy model. Synergy is a patient-centered clinic and provides a place where some of the best physical therapists in The Valley can meet and work with patients in a relaxed environment with the time and space to help them reduce their pain and get moving again.

WHAT IS SYNERGY PHYSICAL THERAPY'S MISSION AND WHAT MAKES THE PRACTICE DIFFERENT? The mission of Synergy Physical Therapy is to help restore the fun in people’s lives through improved movement and function. What makes Synergy different is that we focus on the whole person, not the body part. To get someone to walk better, we often look at the ankle, knee, hip, and low back. As a result, all the muscular systems work together for a maximum outcome, hence the name Synergy Physical Therapy.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR STAFF, FACILITY, AND THE SERVICES SYNERGY PROVIDES. The staff at Synergy, from the front office to the physical therapists, are all patient-centered. We work hard to provide the overall best physical therapy experience. Most of our therapists have well over 25 years of experience, and we also have students from local colleges. The clinic is an open floor plan model that encourages people to move and exercise. Synergy is not just a sports therapy clinic; we provide services for pre-surgical and post-surgical patients, back and neck pain, and orthopedic injuries. We work with Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis patients to improve their gait and balance. In the clinic, you often see patients of all ages and injuries working to achieve their goals.

WALK US THROUGH A NEW PATIENT EXPERIENCE AT SYNERGY, FROM THE FIRST CONSULT TO AN ESTABLISHED PLAN OF CARE. A new patient starts with a physical therapy evaluation where functional limitations are identified and discussed. The therapist and patient work together to set goals, and based on the goals, the plan of care is established. The plan of care can include hands-on manual therapy, modalities like ultrasound, exercises tailored to the patient limitations, and a home exercise program.

I KNOW A BIG FOCUS AT SYNERGY IS GAIT AND BALANCE. CAN YOU SHARE THE IMPORTANCE AND HOW YOU HELP PATIENTS WITH THIS? Walking is so underrated as exercise. Both longevity and cognitive health can be improved by going for regular walks. As we age, our ability to balance and walk seems to slip away, and we often attribute it to just getting older. However, we can improve our balance and ability to walk at any age.

WHAT DO THE NEXT FEW YEARS LOOK LIKE AT SYNERGY PHYSICAL THERAPY? Synergy Physical Therapy will continue to grow, providing the best environment for a physical therapist to work that will, in turn, provide the best place for patients to receive physical therapy. We plan on staying “local” in Northampton and helping patients to move pain-free again.

HOW CAN PATIENTS BEST GET IN TOUCH? To learn more about Synergy Physical Therapy, call our office at (413) 727-3315 or check out our website at SynergyPT413.com.

FINAL THOUGHTS? Synergy Physical Therapy plans to expand its gait and balance center at its current location, providing more room for dynamic functional exercises. Don’t let pain or fear of falling keep you from living your best life.

The Wealth

Technolog y Group Getting Through Divorce in the Best Possible Way ARTICLE BY MAUREEN SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT KATTLER PHOTOGRAPHY

Gary Thomas and his wife Jay want women who are on the verge of divorce to know that the end of your marriage doesn’t mean the end of your life as you know it – it’s the beginning of a new life. That is what the women who enroll in their Divorce Bootcamp – a 14-week course – learn right away. During the program, Gary, an attorney and mediator who has spent most of his career as a financial advisor, and Jay, a social worker, take women through every aspect of the divorce process. “It’s not about just getting through a divorce; it’s about getting through it in the best possible way and creating a new future for yourself,” said Jay. To that end, she and Gary give Divorce Bootcamp participants a road map - a system for moving forward. “No one’s given them that. We meet so many people who haven’t been given the right information or the longterm perspective,” Gary said. Gary and Jay consider themselves coaches. "We turn dreamers into talented mapmakers. Most people want to get through the divorce process as fast as possible,

22

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

but that can sometimes lead to wrong choices," Jay advised. "We ask women what they want and what is attainable. We look at what's possible in each situation. If you don't ask, you don't get," added Gary. Although there are guidelines in divorce cases, there is no limitation on what a divorce settlement can be. Divorce is the biggest negotiation people will go through in their lives, and no one is ever prepared for that negotiation. Ending a marriage is also one of the biggest emotional and financial decisions of a person’s life, said the Thomases. “If you are stressed, your intelligence goes down," Gary said, “and Jay is an expert at de-stressing people.” They advise women that it is okay to say no if they don’t have the full picture. The idea for Divorce Bootcamp came from Gary’s experience as a financial advisor at his firm, The Wealth Technology Group. He met a lot of women who he said “got the short end of the stick for a lot of reasons.” He found that it wasn’t only the financial aspect of the divorce that created issues. Divorce Bootcamp is for women who want to be proactive because, as Jay said, “You can’t be passive in your divorce. Our client is someone who knows that there is something better ahead.” Jay and Gary mention that clients must be willing to work. “We ask you some tough things, but they will help in the end. We want our clients to come from a position of strength. You can put yourself there - it’s a mindset,” coached Jay. “At least half of the women who enroll in Divorce Bootcamp are over 60, and because they have been

in long-term marriages, many of them have not had a chance to be their own person,” Gary said. “We help them see that divorce is not the end; it’s the beginning.” Each Divorce Bootcamp program is limited to 10 women and sessions are conducted in-person and on Zoom. Once a month there is a meeting with local clients in the program. “There is a real benefit to share with others who are going through the same thing. It’s very therapeutic to pass on your success with other women who are just starting the process,” Gary reassured. The tagline for Divorce Bootcamp is “Find Your Inner Soldier. Divorce is Tough, But You Can Be Tougher.” For more information, call (413) 739-3511 or email Gary@WealthTechnology.com

Roots Cycle OUR PASSION

Fun. Energetic. Motivating. Inspiring. These are all words used by members to describe the Roots Cycle experience and exactly the vision Kari Demarinis had when launching the studio. The Roots brand has been a household name in the area for almost 15 years, with businesses including Roots Gymnastics, Root Learning Center, Roots Fitness and Aquatics, Roots Athletic Center, and most recently Roots Cycle. Operating cutting edge, state of the art facilities and programming, Kari always wanted to offer cycling. And, if you are a fitness enthusiast, you are no stranger to the spin classes that hit the scene over 20 years ago.

Kari knew there was an opportunity to bring a unique experience to the Pioneer Valley, an experience that transcended burning calories and working out. Kari and her staff started doing their research, which included taking cycling classes across the United States. They went from boutique studio to boutique studio, getting a sense of the exact vibe they wanted. It wasn’t long before they found what they were seeking: an instructor in Manhattan who had the right mix of musicality, on-trend programming and enthusiasm. With the guidance of the NYC instructor, Roots began building their cycling studio and creating a training room for their instructors. They were committed to the quality and the high energy found in urban areas, and they knew they needed the right instructors. The Roots Cycle team is made up of individuals with a passion for fitness who believe in the Roots brand and possess the musicality and charisma required to inspire others. Initially, the staff trained for four months; they shadowed a minimum of 8-10 rides per week, learned to find the beat in the music, compiled playlists and choreography for review, and auditioned before master trainers. Roots mission statement is to plant the seeds for healthy bodies and minds, and in March of 2018, Roots Cycle opened for business. When you take a class for the first time, you'll discover that the Roots ride is a physical and emotional experience. Every class showcases a new playlist and new choreography, burning up to 700 calories per 45 minute ride. Not only will you find a fullbody workout that will get you in the best shape of your life, but you will discover the community aspect that keeps you coming back. Anybody can do it! Book your free ride today.

Bittersweet Ginger Beer Mocktail Kiss Bitter Hangovers Goodbye To some people, the New Year is a fresh break from unhealthy habits. For others, it's easier to not drink at all than it is to try and control their drinking. The clarity received from sober living is undeniably better than any buzz ever had. It's no surprise American society struggles with moderation, and alcohol is no different. Holidays can be a big drinking trigger, but be aware of the false advertising created. You don't have to lose your job or wait for the wheels to fall off to have a drinking "problem" or even want to take a break. There are recipes for mocktails that mirror both modern and classic libations: Try (and share!) this sweet

drink that bites back to quiet any qualms about your decision to stay sober. "Since the ginger beer is bitter, this drink is on the savory side. The lime shrub brings out more of the lime essence and depth due to the distilling process with vinegar. If the lime shrubbery isn't possible, then lime juice will do just as fine because the acidity helps cut the ginger beer. The simple syrup lifts well and infuses throughout the ice. The bitters on top is what gives it the atmosphere of a cocktail and resonates with the person who wants more than a simple soda." - Ashley Ardizoni from Hutghis at The Nook

INGREDIENTS: • • • • •

Ginger Beer - 5 to 7oz Lime shrub or lime juice - .75oz Simple Syrup - .25 to .50 oz Angostura Bitters - 5 to 10 drops Fresh Lime

DIRECTIONS: 01. Fill a Collins glass with ice 02. Add ginger beer, lime shrub, and simple syrup 03. Top with Angostura Bitters and fresh lime wedge
