It’s the happiest time of year! The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season with a couple past-times. A favorite holiday event is decorating cookies with family. We hope you take some time to try out baker Taylor Trask’s sugar cookie and royal icing recipe! If you’re looking for home decor, Olivia Pearl in Easthampton is the place to visit. Grow Food Northampton continues to inspire and creates holiday joy with local families! Breast Cancer Survivor Launches Photographic Memoir on Her Cancer Journey Leslie Lawrence, a retired marketing strategist in the region, has released her memoir, “I’m a lucky woman: A Photographic Memoir of a Breast Cancer Survivor.” For most of her life, Lawrence expected a cancer diagnosis as her mother and two aunts also battled the disease. Lawrence’s diagnosis came in 2016, when she was 66. Five years later, she reached the cancer-free milestone. Country Hyundai and Other Dealers Present Grant for Pediatric Cancer Research Country Hyundai and Hyundai dealers across Western Massachusetts presented a $100,000 grant for pediatric cancer research to Baystate Children’s Hospital, through the Hyundai Hope On Wheels initiative. Carla Cosenzi, president of Country Hyundai, and her fellow dealers are driven by their determination to make a substantial difference in the battle against pediatric cancer. Decorating cookies A favorite holiday past-time As we look to enjoy the holidays, what better way than to bake some delicious cookies and share with friends. SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE • • • • • • • •

3 cups All purpose flour 1/2 tsp Almond extract 2 tsp Baking powder 1/2 tsp Salt 1 tsp Vanilla extract 1 cup White sugar, granulated 1 cup Butter, unsalted 1 Egg

Makes 3 dozen cookies 1. PREHEAT oven to 350° F. 2. In the bowl of your mixer, cream butter and sugar until smooth. 3. BEAT in extracts and egg. 4. In a separate bowl, COMBINE baking powder and salt with flour and add a little at a time to the wet ingredients. 5. DIVIDE into workable batches (2-3 chunks), roll out onto a floured surface, and CUT. 6. BAKE at 350 for 6-8 minutes. Let cool on the cookie sheet until firm enough to transfer to a cooling rack.

4 cups Confectioners powdered sugar 3 Tbsp Meringue powder 8-12 Tbsp room temperature water 1 tsp Vanilla extract 1/2 tsp Cream of tartar Gel food coloring

1. In a stand mixer with the whisk attachment, COMBINE sugar, cream of tartar and meringue powder. 2. Add 8 tablespoons of water and vanilla. BEAT for 1 minute on low. CONTINUE to add water, one tablespoon at a time, until the icing slowly drizzles from the whisk when lifted. 4. SEPARATE the icing into small mixing bowls, and add gel food coloring to reach the desired color. 5. MIX well and pour into icing bottles.

When the holidays and busy schedules are in full swing, some time to pause and treat ourselves well can be the best gift. For The Hamptons MediSpa owner and founder Lisa Cowan, her main priority is always the patient experience - ensuring that they receive the service that is right for them, that they are educated about the service and that they are satisfied with the results. “I’m very honest with my patients,” said Lisa. “I don’t want to promise something that can’t be delivered. I never want to have an unhappy patient I want to underpromise and overdeliver.” Lisa likes to develop relationships with her patients over time, building that trust and knowledge that will help her recommend the services and products that will best suit the patient. This aspect of the job is important as many services have things that should be considered before a patient decides to do them. CONTINUED >

“I like to educate the patients,” explained Lisa. “I like to walk them through all aspects of what I’m suggesting and ensure they understand all of it. I’ll explain the side effects and make sure we go over everything.” The Hamptons MediSpa offers a wide range of non-surgical procedures for skin and hair, including laser treatments, microdermabrasion and the ever-popular Botox. The spa has many options for managing typical skin concerns such as spider veins and age spots. Described as “the destination for face and body rejuvenation in Southampton,” the spa’s procedures can help people put their best face forward, making them look more youthful and with their natural features enhanced. At the medical spa, all procedures are performed by medical professionals to ensure the greatest safety for patients. Lisa herself is a trained registered nurse with more than 25 years of experience. Before opening her own business, Lisa worked with local plastic surgeon Dr. William Truswell until his retirement in 2021. Lisa is very cautious with the products and services she provides, ensuring that each one does what it is supposed to do before she recommends them to anyone. “I offer products that I know work,” said Lisa. “I do services that I believe people will see benefit from.” To stay on top of new products and services, Lisa attends conferences and seminars regularly. Oftentimes, she goes with her husband Christopher, a nurse practitioner who also works at the spa. He currently works mostly with the hair restoration services, a relatively new addition to the spa’s offerings and one that Lisa said they approached cautiously to make sure it worked as expected. “I like to test it out myself to make sure it works, and it does work very nicely,” said Lisa. For Lisa, the ultimate goal is to build the confidence of her patients by improving how they look and feel using tried and true cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, such as Keralase treatments, micro-needling with radio frequency and AHA peels and glycolic treatments. She also recommends the skin care products of PCA and Elta MD, but emphasizes that it’s really about finding what works best for individuals’ skin, especially in the dry, winter months. “Use something your skin is going to respond to,” said Lisa. “When you find something that works for you, stick with it, but remember that it might need to be updated as skin changes.” The Hamptons MediSpa is located at 15 College Highway in Southampton. Cottage Street at the holidays started the idea of Olivia Pearl. Owner Kimberly Downey had a love for interior design, and all things design and the holiday storefronts inspired the idea of opening a shop filled with practical, beautiful home goods and interior design services. “Olivia Pearl is different from other home decor shops because we offer a variety of decor and home goods that can easily mix in with different styles,” explained Kimberly. “Whether you are looking for something for your own home or shopping for someone else I feel like you can find what you are looking for.” The store offers a wide range of items to shop from furniture to kitchenware and textiles, as well as blankets, pillows, candles, and decor. For Kimberly, the most important things in choosing what to sell are quality and safety and she has very high standards for both. “We opened during the midst of COVID and during a time when we could not go to vendor shows and see products in person. Everything was purchased online,” explained Kimberly. “There were times inventory would arrive and not be what I expected it to be. We would simply return it. I would not put something out in the shop that didn’t meet our quality standards.” Among Olivia Pearl’s wide-ranging offers, the candles are what stand out to customers and have done so since the store’s opening in the spring of 2021.

“We have some staple scents that we carry yearlong and we rotate in seasonal scents,” said Kimberly. ”Our number one candle seller, Milkhouse Candle, is made with pure beeswax and natural paraffin offering a safe and clean candle burning. It’s important to me to provide our customers with the safest options for them and their families.” For many customers, the vibe of the store is what draws them in and brings them back. Both the decor and the smell combine to create an overall feeling that appeals to the store’s clients and makes them want to create the same feeling in their own homes. “We get a lot of feedback that they like the way it feels in the shop,” said Kimberly. “They enjoy the vibe of the shop. For me, that is when the shop comes full circle.” In addition to the shop, Kimberly offers her customers home design services that can help them recreate that feeling. Her love for interior design started many years ago when she and her husband renovated their new home from the studs up, a project that surprised her husband. “I could envision it. We went for it and I fell in love with the process of interior design at that time,” said Kimberly. “I spent a few years designing builds for him and felt my passion come to life.” Olivia Pearl, both its home shop and design services, is a dream come true for Kimberly, who named the store after her daughter and grandmother. As a combination of two loves, Olivia Pearl lets Kimberly do everything she enjoys, and she is appreciative of the support from her customers over the past few years. “I would like my clients to know that everything I put in the shop is something I would put in my own home. Quality of the items in the shop is really important to me and I hope that our customers feel that when they purchase items in the shop or online,” said Kimberly. “Secondly I want our local customers to know that I can also be

The true centerpiece of a happy holiday season is delicious local food shared with loved ones. Everyone in our community, including those living with food insecurity, should be able to enjoy a festive holiday meal with beautiful farm foods, grown and raised right here in our abundant Connecticut River Valley. Everyone can shop for local farm products (which also make great gifts) at Grow Food Northampton’s Winter Market every other Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northampton Senior Center. December markets are on Dec. 2, Dec. 16 and Dec. 30. Those with SNAP benefits can double up to $10 at each market with Grow Food Northampton’s Snap Match program! As in past years, this December, Grow Food Northampton will deliver curated holiday boxes filled with free local food for their holiday feast to hundreds of residents at nine low-income senior and disabled housing communities in Florence and Northampton Residents will enjoy a whole chicken, a variety of local seasonal vegetables, and extras like pie, cheese, eggs, and dairy products, purchased from at least ten farms in the Pioneer Valley. Alongside food deliveries, folks gather to celebrate with events like wreath-making and caroling. Crafts, music, and cheer - three more ingredients for a special holiday season. Easy Apple Holiday Galette INGREDIENTS • 3 big apples, peeled, cored, and sliced. • squeeze of lemon • pinch of salt • 1/2 cup of sugar • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon • 1/2 stick of butter, melted • 1 puff pastry dough, thawed • 1 egg

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375. 2. Toss sliced apples with a squeeze of lemon, salt, sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter in a big bowl, making sure to evenly coat each slice. 3. Carefully unroll the puff pastry sheet onto a floured baking sheet so it doesn’t stick. Roll out the dough to a 12-inch circle. 4. Mound apple mixture in the center of the circle, and gently fold the edges of the dough up onto the apple mound. 5. Scramble one egg and add a splash of water. Brush the egg wash onto the top of the apple galette, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for 40 minutes. 6. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream!

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
