Packard's is not only one of the local’s favorite bars, but it is quickly becoming a destination for a great meal, too! Thornes Marketplace to Become a Canvas for Wall Mural The back side of Thornes Marketplace will soon become a sprawling canvas for a Florida artist who will paint one of his nature-inspired works of art. Chosen from a field of 87 applicants for the $20,000 project funded by a city grant, Ernesto Maranje's design features weaver birds and raccoons, created with layers of much smaller images of flora, fauna and creative touches. Florence Bank $30k Gift to Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity Florence Bank recently renewed a $30,000 pledge to Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity. Jim Hickey, vice president / director of marketing operations at the bank, has joined the nonprofit’s board of directors. The gift and new board participation are signs that the decades-long relationship between Florence Bank and the local Habitat organization continues to deepen. Bank staff also volunteer on construction sites around the county, doing everything from swinging hammers to painting and landscaping.

When We See How Older Relatives are Really Doing

I have found over my many years working in the senior living industry that holiday visits are often a wake-up call for adult children who realize their parent isn’t doing all that well living alone. Although it can be tough facing the reality that elderly relatives are more frail or forgetful than the last time you visited, it’s a great opportunity to make a change for the better. Use this checklist to determine whether your loved one could benefit from a more supportive living option. • Check the mail: The mail offers clues to how your loved one is managing money, a common warning sign of cognitive trouble. Look for unopened bills, letters from banks or creditors, or thank-you messages from charities. • Give a hug: Clues aren’t always visible from a distance. You might learn more from a hug. Look for obvious weight loss or gain, or increased frailty. • Check the medicine cabinet: Individuals over 65 take an average of 14 prescriptions a year and those over 80 more than 19. That’s a lot to manage! Medication errors are leading causes of hospitalization in older adults. Look for expired, discontinued or duplicate prescription bottles. • Inspect the kitchen: This room is especially revealing. Look for expired perishables, multiples of the same item, a freezer full of frozen dinners, broken appliances, or signs of past fire.

• Observe your parent’s social life: Social circles can shrink with age, especially due to fears around Covid19, which can have health and safety implications. Look for signs of isolation - rarely leaving the house, disinterest in activities that were once important, or lacking a group of friends. Encouraging an aging relative to move can be stressful for all concerned. Keep in mind that assisted living does not mean a loss of independence. Quite the contrary! PACKARD’S You could say that Packard’s on Masonic Street is an institution in Northampton. Purchased by Bob McGovern in 1977, the neighborhood bar, which has long been a watering hole for locals, has now put the focus on food. As Bob says, “It used to be a bar with a restaurant, now it’s a restaurant with a bar.” It was Meg Cole, Packard’s manager and a bartender, who recommended Packard’s shift gears and focus on food, noting that the bar would take care of itself. Bob agreed, saying, “The days of the bars are gone. The days of having fun in the bars are gone – everyone’s too serious.” Packard’s is still where the locals hang out, but by putting the focus on food, it is drawing a new crowd. One of the reasons is that Packard’s keeps the kitchen open late. Dinner is served until 10 p.m. during the week, 11 p.m. on Thursdays, and midnight on weekends. We’re the place to go for late-night food,” Bob said, noting that workers from other restaurants that close earlier, will come here to eat after their shift. Umi Abkin, who owned the popular Coco restaurant in Easthampton, consulted on the new menu, and Bob said he was grateful to her for reaching out during tough Covid times. “Her departure from the Valley was a great loss to those who loved her,” Bob added.

Collin Warner, formerly a chef at Sierra Grill, is now at the helm of Packard’s kitchen, turning out Jerk Chicken, Cuban and CarolinaStyle Pulled Pork sandwiches, appetizers and salads, and Kona Rub New York Strip Steak, Grilled Steak Tips (Bob’s favorite), Buttermilk Friend Chicken and a Grilled Vegetable and Rice Bowl, to name a few of the dinner entrees. There is a kid’s menu, too, as well as a short list of desserts. There are food and drink specials that change every two weeks. A recent specials menu featured Swiss Cheese and Bacon Croquettes, Cajun Chicken and Vegetables – and Bob’s favorite special – Pulled Pork Tacos. The most popular specials are rotated, but something new is always added. Even with the new focus on food, Packard’s would not be Packard’s without its legendary history. Although known for always taking care of the locals, Packard’s has hosted its share of celebrities – Tom Cruise has visited, as has the actor Ken Tigar, and the cast party for the movie “The Cider House Rules” was held there. During the Blizzard of ’78, when most businesses were closed, Packard’s was packed with snow plow drivers and EMTs – all of whom ate and drank on the house. Bob recalls when Northampton instituted a smoking ban in all bars and restaurants.

“I said we’re not gonna do it and The Board of Health didn’t fine me or shut me down then. They have been a great help during Covid, and we thank them for all that they have done. Let’s say that on some things we agree to disagree, and that makes all the difference,” Bob said. “We’ve always pushed the limit,” Bob said, but when the smoking ban was made statewide five years later, Packard’s complied, although customers can smoke outside in an open air courtyard off the center of the restaurant. Packard’s is still the local hangout, and as Bob McGovern says, “If you want to have a good time, you’ll have a great time.”

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, not just because I am a foodie, but because it brings people together. Often, I am asked “Where can I find the best turkey dinner?” and my answer is always Delaney’s Market. They offer multiple portion sizes: single person, two person, or four person. Shown to the left is a four-person turkey dinner. The meal includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and cranberries on top. You can purchase additional sides, cranberry sauce, gravy, and desserts. Each meal comes either frozen or ready to heat & serve. For this dinner you have the option to microwave it or bake it in the

oven. I recommend this meal for a Thanksgiving dinner if you don’t feel like cooking, or even if you want to share with family on a cold autumn night! There is nothing like old-fashioned customer service – the kind you get from local, hometown businesses that go above and beyond for their customers. That is exactly what you’ll get at Nuttelman’s Florist in Northampton – and it’s what sets them apart. The business was founded in 1976 by Chip Nuttelman’s father Justin - and almost from the beginning, Chip was involved in the business. Nuttelman’s has always been a full-service flower shop, offering delivery. Over the years, they have expanded to offer delivery to more than eight area cities and towns. Today, Chip and his wife Mary run the business with the help of one part-time employee. The florist business has changed over the years. Mary recalls how in the 1980s, they had so many requests for funeral arrangements that instead of people looking at a book and ordering a specific arrangement, the staff – seven at that time – created arrangements and customers came in and selected what they wanted. Mary laments that many people don’t send flowers to wakes anymore – often because families request donations in lieu of flowers, but she has an idea that seems at once thoughtful and affordable. “If each person attending a wake brought one single rose to the funeral home, it would help keep florists in business and it would be a nice gesture,” she says. One good change that has happened in recent years, says Chip, is the yearround availability of gorgeous flowers. While roses are still the most popular flower among Nuttleman’s customers, irises and lilies are among the top choices, and says Chip, “People love tulips.” Birthdays and anniversaries remain popular occasions for sending flowers, and while Mary and Chip do a lot of weddings, it is seasonal – with most weddings taking place in spring and fall. Key to weddings for Nuttelman’s is keeping both their budget and the

bride’s budget in mind and at the same time making sure they create what she wants. “Nuttelman’s takes great pride in knowing that most of our floral arrangements that we create have a life expectancy of a week, sometimes more with the proper care of fresh water daily and trimming in the home environment. Should however, a rose or other flower not do well within a couple of days, we gladly replace it free of charge. You won’t get that type of guarantee from most businesses today,” Chip said. There are blooms aplenty in the shop – 20-30 different kinds at any given time, as well as greens. Customers like to come in and pick out three stems or 25 stems and design their own bunch of flowers, says Mary. Or Chip will arrange the flowers for them. Nuttelman’s will also plant flowers at the headstone in cemeteries in advance of Memorial Day each year. While they don’t take care of the flowers, they do plant hardy flowers that can survive the summer. Chip prides himself in the level of customer service they offer. “We’ve always been accommodating to people’s needs,” he says. For example, if a customer calls to order flowers at 3 p.m., Nuttelman’s will deliver them that day. Often, Chip comes into the shop early or on a Sunday if a customer needs flowers. “I rarely say no,” Chip admits, adding, “I can’t count the number of times I’ve delivered something on my way home – people remember us for that.”

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”

PUERTO RICAN EGGNOG

Come holiday season, savor the flavor of the Caribbean with Coquito - a traditional drink, made by the batch, that tastes like sweet, creamy coconut, kissed by cinnamon and spices. It is similar to American-style eggnog, but varies in origin of ingredients with each family’s coquito coming out slightly different. A standard and easy start is the 1-1-1-1-1 method, using 1 can or cup of each base ingredient. Some listed items like vanilla, nutmeg and rum are strongly recommended, but optional. Fun non-traditional variations include: pistachio, oreo, chocolate, and banana.

Gather ingredients: 12oz can coconut cream; 13.5oz can coconut milk; 12oz can evaporated milk; 14oz can sweetened condensed milk; rum; cinnamon sticks; cloves, star anise, vanilla, ground nutmeg & cinnamon.

Make tea base: Boil 1 cup water with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Discard spices & let cool.

Pour milks together: In a blender or large bowl, pour together all the cans: coconut cream, coconut milk, evaporated milk, and sweet condensed. Mix thoroughly until smooth.

Combine bases: Add tea base to milk base blending until mixed. Taste test and adjust to liking. Optional: Add 1 cup rum of choice and spices. Blend, taste, and adjust if needed.

Chill: Bottle in the fridge until cold - at least one or two hours, but the colder the better.

Top with spice & enjoy! Once chilled and ready to serve, mix vigorously to reincorporate ingredients. Pour into a glass, lightly top with ground cinnamon, and enjoy!
