Phoenix Children’s Receives Grant to Fight Aggressive Brain Tumor
BRAIN TUMORS ARE THE MOST COMMON SOLID TUMOR IN CHILDREN, ACCOUNTING FOR APPROXIMATELY 25% OF ALL CHILDHOOD CANCERS. Diffuse midline gliomas (DIPGs) represent approximately 50% of all pediatric brainstem tumors and due to their location, cannot be removed surgically. However, new hope has been instilled at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) with the Gateway for Cancer Research’s approval of a $1.5 million grant to help physician-scientists at PCH make progress in combating this aggressive pediatric brain tumor. Dr. Cynthia Wetmore, M.D., Ph.D., is the division chief of Hematology/Oncology and director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at PCH. The renowned pediatric oncologist is leading a study called CUPID that will test a therapy combining a customized peptide vaccine with a checkpoint inhibitor to combat the incurable pediatric brain stem cancer. This is a collaboration with Stephen Johnston, Ph.D., at Arizona State University, who has developed the technology (a chip) for identifying peptides in the patients’ blood to be used for the vaccine. If ultimately successful, the research could be the first therapeutic progress for DIPG in more than 30 years.
“I’VE COMMITTED MY LIFE AND CAREER TO HELPING CHILDREN BATTLE CANCER. THIS IS THE DEADLIEST FORM, AND I WANT THESE CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES TO HAVE HOPE. WE ARE EXCITED FOR THE COLLABORATION WITH PCH AND ASU. IT FEELS AS THOUGH THE STARS HAVE ALIGNED TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON THIS DISEASE.” There has yet to be a treatment for this form of tumor, left only to shrink and return with radiation. The grant will allow for clinical trials with the new therapy developed by Dr. Wetmore and Stephen. “We have discovered that proteins with ‘typos’ are produced in tumors and that the patients are making antibodies to these disordered proteins,” Dr. Wetmore says. “Our proposal seeks to give a peptide vaccine that consists of the 20 most common protein ‘typos’ that are made by the DIPG tumors. We propose to administer this vaccine in combination with two checkpoint inhibitors that we hope will further boost the patient’s own immune system to fight the tumor. Kids will be enrolled and treated right here at PCH.” Gateway has funded more than 170 patient-focused clinical trials at renowned institutions worldwide. Dr. Wetmore feels this, along with philanthropic support, can assist in cutting-edge ways to find cures for rare cancers such as this. “I’ve walked the halls and cared for so many families whose children have lost the battle with cancer. Some families have even given the precious gift of tumor cells from their loved one who has passed to assist in research. It is amazing that they are part of finding a cure even after they are gone, leaving a true legacy. This grant will help get important studies off the ground for advances in cancer care.”

ICE, ICE BABY PUT YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD WITH THE SUMMER ICE FACIAL
HOT TEMPS, BRIGHT SUN, AIR CONDITIONING— SUMMER IN ARIZONA BRINGS MANY THINGS THAT CAN IRRITATE YOUR FACE AND CAUSE IT TO BE SENSITIVE, BLOTCHY AND IRRITATED. To combat this, Arizona Facial Plastics is offering its unique Summer Ice Facial. The treatment “uses a targeted jet of carbon dioxide gas to rapidly cool the skin, causing the blood vessels in the face to alternately constrict and dilate.” “High summer temperatures can make your skin look uneven and red. This cooling treatment helps balance your skin tone and reduce redness,” explains Felicia Taghizadeh, director of operations at Arizona Facial Plastics. “It is also a great way to maintain treatments you had during the winter months, as it encourages the skin to continue regenerating.” The Summer Ice Facial begins with a Hawaiian papaya enzyme to prepare the skin, followed by the cryo-therapy treatment. The session, which lasts an hour, ends with an ultra-hydrating chlorophyll-cucumber mask and red-light therapy. “This is a great summer facial because instead of using hot lasers during a high-heat season, it uses rapidly cooled carbon dioxide to treat the skin,” Felicia says. “[It] is a great option because the multiple benefits of cryo-therapies are becoming more well known, including reducing pigment, reducing acne and rejuvenating the skin. It also feels and smells amazing, and leaves your face hydrated with a brightness and smoothness that wasn’t there before.”
Summer pricing for the treatment is $199, with package deals available. For more information, visit ArizonaFacialPlastics.com. 20

GROWN PUPS FOR GROWN-UPS PROGRAM
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT WITH
FURRY FRIENDS
ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS PHOTOGRAPHY
SCOTTSDALE IS A COMMUNITY KNOWN FOR CARING DEEPLY FOR ITS FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS. Whether it be innovative ways to enhance a pet’s health or getting involved in organizations that help animals find a much-deserved forever home, there are various ways to show love for furry friends this fall. GROWN PUPS FOR GROWN-UPS PROGRAM Nancy Silver established the Two Pups Wellness Fund in 2017 through the Arizona Community Foundation in honor of her pups, Mr. P. and Miss Lacie. The organization raises funds to help rescue and shelter dogs in need of vital medical treatment. Recently, the organization launched Grown Pups for Grown-Ups, a program that focuses on the adoption of older shelter dogs. Under this new program, Two Pups Wellness Fund provides everything from blood tests and treatment for medical issues to funding adoption efforts through marketing and events. “People are sometimes hesitant to adopt an older dog because they’re afraid something may be medically wrong,” says Mary Martin, director of MCACC. “The reality is, these dogs can and do make great companions and still have a lot of life left in them.” MCCAC will house the Grown Pups in newly refurbished rooms, making it easier for potential adopters to interact with these older dogs. Grown Pups for GrownUps aims to show people that adopting an older dog may suit someone’s lifestyle better than a puppy.
"SINCE WE LAUNCHED IN SPRING 2017, WE’VE HELPED MORE THAN 1,500 ANIMALS, SO WE HAVE A LOT OF SUCCESS STORIES WE ARE HAPPY TO SHARE. EARLIER THIS YEAR, WE GOT A CALL FROM MARICOPA ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL ABOUT A DOG THAT HAD BEEN THROWN IN A DUMPSTER AND LEFT FOR DEAD. A YOUNG MAN AND HIS DOG WERE OUT FOR THEIR MORNING WALK, AND HIS DOG, LADY, BEGAN ACTING FRANTIC. HE HEARD A WHIMPERING AND FOUND AN INJURED CAIRN TERRIER. TWO PUPS PAID FOR THE MEDICAL CARE, AND TODAY, LADDIE IS DOING VERY WELL AND LIVING HAPPILY WITH A FAMILY IN MESA THAT ADOPTED HER. PLEASE VISIT TWOPUPS.ORG TO FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN HELP." —NANCY SILVER, FOUNDER OF TWO PUPS CONTINUED >

The event starts with a “free-roaming puppy” Pilates class then moves outdoors where attendees can hold puppies, browse vendors and raffle items, and drink mimosas with light snacks. The next 21-plus event is Nov. 29, with the previous spring session raising $18,000 for the care of mother dogs and their puppies. For more information, visit ATFCAZ.org/donate.

PET SUPPLEMENTS Dr. Josh Sosnow, D.V.M., has been in practice for 19 years and currently works at North Scottsdale Animal Hospital. With pet care evolving significantly, there is growth in veterinary understanding of a pet’s medical needs and how it relates to popular mainstream pet supplements. Dr. Sosnow seeks to help his patients determine if there is a medical need for a supplement. “Inclusion of supplements into a therapeutic plan is useful when the evidence demonstrates that the supplement will provide an advantage over pharmaceutical agents or work in concert with a drug to improve disease management,” he says. Dr. Sosnow speaks to some of the more popular supplements

on the market right now and what they may do for your pet. “Cannabidiol (CBD) is touted as a tool to manage a variety of conditions, but the published evidence for its benefit is currently limited to patients with osteoarthritis and seizures. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are one of the more common supplements and are fairly well-established. Patients with arthritis, allergic skin disease and kidney disease can truly benefit from its anti-inflammatory effects. Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is newer, and literature supports its use for anti-inflammatory issues.”

GATHER UP YOUR SUPERHEROES AND HEAD OVER TO THE FAIRMONT SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS RESORT FOR A SUMMER OF ACTION-PACKED ADVENTURES. Through Labor Day, the resort encourages families to engage in heroic activities that will allow kids’ high energy and active imaginations the opportunity to really take flight. “If you didn’t get away to that exotic destination this summer, you won’t want to miss a short escape to the Princess for the Labor Day Dreamcation weekend,” says Pam Gilbert, director of Sales and Marketing. “This year the resort will host a final celebration of Superhero Summer at the Princess with a three-day cruise aboard the SS Princess to the magical Paradise Island, home of Wonder Woman. Island drinks, spa packages and a tropical bounty of cuisine will help you ease out of summer break feeling like you had an escape to a tropical island. Of course, all the Super Hero fun at the Princess continues through the weekend.”
Children can transform from sidekick to superhero in a flash with a special cape and mask they will receive upon check-in. The mission is to decipher the secret message given when they arrive. Pack a punch and fuel up with waters and “power boost powder” to rejuvenate after a long day of saving the world. Be Superman or Superwoman in a themed phone photo booth, and don’t forget to say hello to furry and friendly friends (the Princess’ caped canine ambassadors). 26

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | August 2019
SCOTT JENKINS IS A PARTNER AT QUARLES & BRADY LAW FIRM. As a commercial litigator and bankruptcy attorney, he is proudly recognized by his peers on the list of Best Lawyers in America and Southwest Super Lawyers. An Arizona native, he and his wife are raising two sons in Scottsdale with the hope that they too will cherish this amazing community and be a part of it into adulthood. It is in this vein that Scott has taken on many philanthropic leadership roles to show his children how important it is to give back to a community you love. "I come from a family that has always placed a high value on community service. It was always understood that we were to invest our time, talent and resources in our community," Scott says. "I can honestly say finding ways to get involved in my community came naturally to me, and I sincerely enjoy it. I grew up here, so making sure that our community continues to thrive is extremely important to me. Now that I have a family of my own, I owe it to my two sons to do my part in making sure that the Valley continues to be a great place to live and raise a family." Scott has a particular interest in Children's Charities and organizations. He feels fortunate to have worked with outstanding professional and nonprofit organizations that have a tremendous effect on the quality of life in the Valley and across the state. He has served as a member of the Fiesta Bowl Committee and the Junior Achievement Board, to name a few. "I have seen how the good work of these organizations and their volunteers and staff directly impact Arizona and her residents," he says. In 2015, Scott became a member of The Thunderbirds, which funds local charities from the record-setting revenues the tournament has been blessed to post year after year. The 2020 tournament will be the 85th year of what is now the Waste Management Phoenix Open presented by Ak-Chin Indian Community. The 2019 WMPO raised a record $13.2 million that will be reinvested in the terrific work of many local nonprofit entities across the state. Many of these organizations have missions that directly serve Arizona families and children in particular.

"The good health and well-being of our youngest community members is crucial to the long-term vitality of Phoenix. The Thunderbirds will continue to invest in this important sector of our community. This year, I was selected Assistant Tournament for 2020 and Tournament Chairmen for 2021. It is truly a great honor to be selected to the leadership of The Thunderbirds, and I look forward to continuing the legacy of 'The People’s Open.'” An avid sports fan, Scott also can be found coaching his sons' baseball teams, as well as holding office as a member of the Executive Committee for Cactus Horizon Little League. While it seems he extends himself tremendously, Scott feels it is more of an honor than a burden. "My family takes great pride in our association with The Thunderbirds and counts the commitment as investments in our future in Arizona. My family has seen up close how the proceeds of the WMPO are ultimately reinvested in places like the new Phoenix Children's Hospital Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, the Neuro-Robotics Rehabilitation Program at Barrow Neurological Institute, the Boys & Girls Clubs' Guadalupe Branch renovation project or the investment in United Food Bank, among so many other true legacy investments that are making Arizona a better place for all of us."

Find a non-distracting background so you can isolate your subject. 2. Expose for the sky. 3. Shoot from low to high. GREEN/GRASS: If you are looking for a more “springy” feel to your photo, you may want to consider finding a large grass field and/or heading to a golf course. easy grammar systems wins parent teacher choice award ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS PHOTOGRAPHY
EASY GRAMMAR SYSTEMS, THE COMPANY THAT INSPIRES STUDENTS TO AWAKEN THE SCHOLAR WITHIN, RECENTLY WON FOUR PARENT TEACHER CHOICE AWARDS FROM HOWTOLEARN.COM, AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED ORGANIZATION. Their books, Easy Grammar: Grade 1, Easy Grammar: Grade 5, Daily GRAMS: Grade 5 and Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9 were selected as gold medal winners in the best of children’s books. “I delight in these awards!” says Easy Grammar Systems' Wanda Phillips, who wrote her first book, Easy Grammar Plus, and started her publishing company in 1986. What began as a home-based business has now grown to 27 texts that she sells out of a 10,000-squarefoot building at Scottsdale Airpark. The Parent Teacher Choice Award was the first international award for Easy Grammar and was judged by parents and teachers. Wanda started her career as a high school English teacher. “I was frustrated that my students came to me neither speaking nor writing well," she says. After a move to Arizona and taking a seventh grade teaching position, Wanda soon realized the issue was that the texts were not set up for mastery learning. She began to develop her own curriculum. Easy Grammar is based on a prepositional approach where students learn a list of commonly used prepositions, then quickly learn to identify a prepositional phrase and to delete it from a sentence. This analysis allows for determining the subject and verb easily. Equally important, the process allows for application to more complex concepts. “All students ‘glide’ to understanding using a step-by-step,

escalator-style paradigm. Students are neither overwhelmed nor confused about concepts at any level,” she says.
ALL STUDENTS’ SCORES INCREASED GREATLY. ONE STUDENT’S LEARNING, IN FACT, WAS INCREDIBLE. ELATED, I MET WITH MOM AND SHARED THAT HER DAUGHTER HAD ACCELERATED FROM A 2.8 (SECOND GRADE, EIGHTH MONTH) SIXTH GRADE SCORE TO A SEVENTH GRADE SCORE OF 7.8 (SEVENTH GRADE, EIGHTH MONTH)—IN ONE SCHOOL YEAR. “BOTH HER MOM AND I CRIED. THE STUDENT SIMPLY SAID, ‘WELL YOU TAUGHT ME IT,’ TO WHICH I REPLIED, ‘BUT YOU, MY FRIEND, ACHIEVED IT!’” –WANDA PHILLIPS
