Before we dive into this issue focused on all things eco-friendly, I would quickly like to introduce myself as the new owner/publisher of North Scottsdale Lifestyle! It comes with much gratitude to become a voice in this beautiful community in which I was born and raised as well as have the privilege of calling home. I am indeed a fourth-generation native to Arizona, Scottsdale specifically. As a native, my roots here are deep and wide while continuing to grow as my husband and I raise our four boys here as well. When it comes to being grateful, it is so important to respect and appreciate our environment. Now more than ever we must be mindful about living in an eco-friendly manner, such as recycling; eating organic healthy, natural food; and being conscious of our surroundings.

A MODERN FARM WITH A CONTEMPORARY TWIST EXISTS IN NORTH SCOTTSDALE. Farm & Craft is a mecca for ecological enthusiasts. Focused on healthy and sustainable food in a community-style atmosphere, the idea behind the concept was a passion for the health-conscious eater as well as the non-discriminate. "Our team lives a healthy lifestyle and hopes that we can share that experience with our guests. We created an ethos ingredient card that encompasses our idea of a healthy diet: antioxidant, stress relief, probiotic-rich and anti-inflammatory," says Farm & Craft President Darryl Cuilla. Farm & Craft serves up healthy and delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. One signature dish that hits all the categories of healthful eating is the Rustic Salmon Bowl, complimented by roasted cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts and a special kale pesto that gives it a rich, savory sensation. From there, a fillet of Faroe Island salmon (locally sourced from Chula Seafood) is placed and topped with sunflower seeds. Other favorites include the vegan ceviche, the flatbreads and build-your-own bowls. "We try to make it simple for our guests. We use local, sustainable, gluten-free, organic and hormone-free ingredients. We constantly update the menu to reflect food trends and introduce new healthy dishes," Darryl says. "We also serve organic spirits, led by our signature cold-pressed cocktails,

local beers and eclectic wines on tap. The restaurant’s juice program includes cold-pressed juices and nourishing kombucha cocktails." Farm & Craft supports the use of local ingredients and takes pride in the local tie-in of produce, bread and beef. "We believe in creating a small footprint whenever we think about the food delivery system and how that affects our ecosystem down chain," he says. "Because of that, we source all of our beef from AZ Grass-fed, bread from Noble Bread Co, produce from a host of local farms, and our granola is from Laura’s Gourmet. Supporting local is important, and we will continue to find ways to source within the community." Guests will leave with an immediate urge to return to Farm & Craft; it's the ideal option for healthy eating even when on a date night or a business lunch in the heart of North Scottsdale.
"FARM AND CRAFT CHECKS ALL THE BOXES FOR THOSE WANTING TO EAT FRESH, LOCALLY SOURCED, AND THOSE WHO ARE HEALTH/ECO LIFESTYLE EATERS. WHETHER YOU’RE WHOLE 30, KETO, PALEO OR JUST HUNGRY FOR A GRASS-FED BURGER AND A LOCAL BEER ON TAP, WE WILL BE HERE FOR YOU. THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF PHOENIX HOSTED ITS 82ND ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE AT THE ARIZONA STATE FAIRGROUNDS ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23. As one of JLP’s signature fundraisers, the Rummage Sale is “Arizona’s Largest Garage Sale,” which provides shoppers with an opportunity to purchase an array of new and gently used items across 23 departments at deeply discounted prices. The Rummage Sale is the Junior League of Phoenix’s largest fundraiser, which attracted more than 3,500 shoppers and raised more than $100,000 in 2018. JLP’s more than 1,000 members donate and collect all sale items throughout the year and contribute more than 3,200 volunteer hours to make the event possible. Over its 81-year history, the Rummage Sale has raised more than $7 million that has contributed to JLP’s legacy of impact in the Valley. “The Junior League has a long-standing tradition of making a difference in the community through the Rummage Sale. Not only do customers benefit from this event by being able to purchase high-quality merchandise at greatly reduced prices, but the entire community benefits from this event as money raised goes directly back into the community through the Junior League's signature programs,” says Cherie Rankin, chair of the 2018 Rummage Sale. This 2019 Sale's focus is on “Building a Healthy Arizona." Beneficiaries include: ROCKETS— Raising Our Children’s Knowledge by Educating Through Science, a program that promotes early childhood development of science skills; Kids in the Kitchen, a nutritional initiative that seeks to combat childhood obesity; Kids Cook with Heart, a partnership with the American Heart Association that provides hands-on healthy cooking classes and nutrition and cardiovascular health education to Valley youth; and Ending Hunger in the Classroom, a partnership with Valley of the Sun United Way which provides 4,700 students in nine Valley schools with nutritious breakfasts and distributes Weekend Hunger Bags during the school year. While these benefits are a large part of the Sale's success, the individual ways in which this sale benefits those who shop is equally as remarkable. CONTINUED >

hickman’s family farms an eco-friendly staple in the community

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | April 2019
Hickman’s Family Farms cares about the community it serves and has for 75 years. In fact, the company is consistently innovating its packaging and processing to go the "egg-stra" mile. The company was started in 1944 off the back porch of Nell Hickman. By 1950, she had 500 hens and was matched by her daughter-in-law, Gertie, as a 50/50 partner in the business. The women sold directly to customers, often making deliveries in the back of a Ford coupe that they had removed the backseat from—collecting money their customers left under rocks, porch mats, and off kitchen window sills. By 1975, the flock had grown to 125,000 hens, and Gertie’s husband, Bill Sr., joined the women in business by remodeling the hen houses, even using lumber from the railroad construction. Today, the company has about 8 million hens in Arizona, and you may see a Hickman’s truck with fun sayings like “Stay off my tailfeather” delivering to your favorite local grocery store. Although there are many choices when it comes to the egg case at your local grocer, Hickman’s Family Farms stands out in the crowd. "The hens drive our business, and they are why we’ve made strides to transition to cage-free hen houses in many of our facilities. We have an on-staff veterinarian and a team of professionals who monitor our hens around the clock. Our goal is simple: we strive to produce the most nutritious, affordable protein on the market from a local source that you can trust. We offer Grade AA and A eggs, cage-free eggs CONTINUED >

and our newest: grass-fed eggs," says Sharman Hickman, director of community outreach and education at Hickman’s Family Farms. New technology has allowed Hickman's the ability to adapt to the consumer’s needs and continue to become more eco-friendly, as their belief is what is better for the environment is better for the community. The company is proud of the 100 percent PET recycled packaging that debuted in 2017. Most foods’ packaging has been updated over the past several decades—new materials, new design but not the humble egg carton until Hickman’s Family Farms changed that practice. "Hickman’s has always prioritized sustainability both environmentally and socially. The company partnered with a California-based company to produce new recycled plastic cartons. Each 12-count carton uses three average-sized plastic bottles, saving millions of plastic from ending up in landfills each year," Sharman says. "Additionally, the company utilizes robots and conveyor belts so that no human

hand touches an egg after it is laid and before it hits the consumer’s kitchen. Hickman’s also produces its own feed for hens, collects broken eggs for limestone and protein powder production, and turns manure into pasteurized organic fertilizer that can be used in many applications, including treating organic greens and vegetables." It is the unsurpassed ability to offer quality, delicious and nutritious products from a loving family perspective that the Hickmans feel have led them to success over the years. Hickman’s Family Farms has strong roots in the local Arizona community. “We are able to be successful through the continued support of our neighbors, friends and community members. Arizonans are hungry for sustainably and responsibly produced products, especially food," Sharman says. "Being the go-to local source so that Arizonans can be sure they are getting the freshest eggs possible, in recycled cartons, from a company that truly strives to be a responsible neighbor, has been a large contributing factor to the company’s success." You can find Hickman’s eggs on plates all over the Valley—including North Scottsdale! Local businesses proudly serve Hickman's eggs to give visitors and residents a real taste of Arizona. Whether it’s served poached, scrambled or overeasy—local is always tastier.
+ Hickman’s is the largest egg producer west of the Rockies. + Hickman’s produces 2 billion eggs in Arizona each year. + Hickman’s 100 percent recycled egg carton is the first and only of its kind. + Hickman’s grass-fed eggs have five times the amount of omega-3s as a regular egg.

VERTEX WEALTH DISCUSSES BENEFITS OF ECO-FRIENDLY INVESTING ARTICLE STACI HAUK PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS
WHEN BUILDING A PORTFOLIO FOR YOUR INVESTMENTS, DO YOU CONSIDER WHAT THE COMPANIES YOU INVEST IN STAND FOR? At Vertex Wealth, ecological factors are taken into account when helping clients make sound investments that are also socially and ecologically conscious. Kirk G. Kaprelian, CFP, ChFC, private wealth adviser, explains how to create the ideal portfolio to accomplish these goals. 36
North Scottsdale Lifestyle | April 2019
DESCRIBE THE BEST WAYS TO ACHIEVE ECO-FRIENDLY INVESTING. Values-based investing can take a few different forms: 01 | Environmental, social and governance (ESG): an attempt to deliver strong risk-adjusted returns by targeting companies with such characteristics as best-in-class technology and management teams, with environmentally conscious efforts to utilize alternative fuels. 02 | Values-based investing, also referred to as socially responsible investing (SRI), or faith-based investing, use screens to avoid investing in certain targeted areas. 03 | Impact-investing, which can be attractive for those seeking to generate measurable environmental or social impact such as avoidance of fossil fuel-extracting companies or a focus on social objectives to promote gender equality and LGBT rights. HOW CAN VERTEX WEALTH ASSIST WITH ECO-FRIENDLY INVESTING? Since there is growing interest in this area of investing, we at Vertex Wealth Advisors, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services Inc., have developed screens of our own to derive a portfolio that incorporates factors of Sustainable, Responsible Investing (SRI). We typically utilize individual securities, ETFs and mutual funds. ESG focuses on finding companies that are best-in-class

The next time you ask for a plastic straw, grab plastic bags at the grocery store or buy a bottle of water on your way to the gym (we’re all guilty of something!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.

CRAIG MITCHELL, CREATOR OF DESERT INNOVATIVE MAP TECHNOLOGY, KNEW THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING SURROUNDINGS TO OPTIMIZE THE HIKING EXPERIENCE. A hiking enthusiast and tech-minded individual himself, his idea for this product came from a demand for a consistent way to obtain information while hiking. The Map is a 55-inch touchscreen pad which is intuitive and easy to use. Located in Mitchell's neighborhood at Desert Mountain, the program allows hikers to view everything about the trails they are about to navigate including difficulty, length and elevation. "Some residents want to take visitors on hikes, and this interactive trail guide can be downloaded straight to their phones. The screen will let them know how high they will be going on trails as well as how long it will take. We examined each trail and broke it down by speed intervals such as 'casual with photos,' 'less casual' and 'rigorous workout speed.' People can get the greatest gauge for their day because they will know they aren't just hiking six miles; it is actually six miles and 900 feet in a loop which adds clarity," Craig says. Craig and a group of volunteers used GPS to track all trails, elevations, gains per mile and timing before creating this innovative approach. The ruggedized equipment can last with weather conditions and even houses a calendar of events such as art exhibits, horseback rides, organized hikes and happy hours, so frequent visitors can plan ahead. Craig's idea is quickly growing and expanding into new markets. "Our trail builder was here and told me that while others want to do this, they haven't been able to implement it so seamlessly. When Outdoor Recreation Club Managers were here for training, one wanted to see about doing this with sailing, so new areas await us with this technology."
