VALLEY DINERS LOOKING FOR A FRESH TAKE ON STEAKHOUSE RESTAURANTS CAN LOOK NO FURTHER THAN BOURBON CELLAR. Offering lunch and dinner daily, the restaurant brings guests a high-end steakhouse experience in a warm and inviting atmosphere, with an unparalleled menu. Chef and Owner Doug Smith opened the Bourbon Cellar to give North Scottsdale a true farm-to-table experience in an environment that offers the comforts of home. Rather than using vendors, Doug sources ingredients for his menu daily. He seeks out the freshest in-season produce from local farmers’ markets and hand-prepares his own cuts of beef (from retired milk cows only), elk, bison, venison and pork from his butcher shop, French’s Meat, a Valley mainstay since 1969. He also flies in fresh fish and seafood daily from Maryland, Maine, Canada and Alaska. “For me, cooking and serving food is not only a way to creatively express myself but also give diners a taste experience they’ve never had before with food that is familiar,” Doug says. Doug, a veteran, aims to not only serve the freshest quality food but also to welcome his guests in as friends. In that vein, he offers a full buffet on the third Wednesday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for just $15. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these dinners benefit local American Legion posts in Anthem, Phoenix and Cave Creek. 23623 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, 480.595.5868, TheBourbonCellar.com

The garlic mashed potatoes are prepared by roasting garlic cloves in hot oil that is made into a puree and blended into the potato mix ture.

The steak is sourced from French’s Meat Shop in Phoenix (also owned by Doug—all fresh) that he hand-prepares from his own cuts of beef (from retired milk cows only).

The deviled egg is a staple that is always placed on the finished plated dish at the Bourbon Cellar. After experimenting with many renditions, Doug decided on the wasabi deviled egg, a true labor of love.

HIS INSPIRATIONS FOR HIS WORK ON THE ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY'S PRODUCTION OF TWO TRAINS RUNNING ARTICLE STACI HAUK PHOTOGRAPHY SUE DEBENEDETTE

AUGUST WILSON’S TWO TRAINS RUNNING FOCUSES ON THE CROSSROADS OF A REVOLUTION. It explores a time of extraordinary change and the ordinary people who get left behind. Produced locally by the Arizona Theatre Company and presented at the Herberger Theater Feb. 14 through March 3, this story is told heavily through visualization of the time period and by character portrayals. For costume designer Mathew J. LeFebvre, this show holds special meaning, and he wanted the costuming to reflect that. "This is a show that I’ve done more times than any other, and I have done them all with Director Lou Bellamy. Because the play is set in Pittsburg 1969, I was strongly influenced by the work of a photographer who lived there at that time named Charles Harris. All of August Wilson’s plays are written about that neighborhood as well, and that inspired my designs." Mathew noted that late 1960s Ebony magazines gave him further knowledge of what garments of the period people were gravitating toward. Coupled with the raw simplicity of street photography, these tools gave him accurate insight into what real people wore. "The play is ritualistic. It takes place in a diner under urban renewal, and the city is trying to buy the diner. The owner, Memphis, is trying to get a good price, and there are many obstacles that arise."

The passage of time happens throughout the play, and Risa’s character never leaves the stage. She is the waitress at the diner Memphis owns, and because she’s a constant, the uniform made sense while also adding an air of professionalism.

HAMBONE Hambone is the heart of the story in many ways, as people feel compassion for his character. “He uses different variations of one phrase throughout—’I want my ham’—because he does odd jobs for people in the neighborhood, such as the Butcher, and there is a story that will unfold,” Mathew says. “His part is a metaphor for the struggle of African-Americans in society. He is a powerful character, so we gave him a military shirt with sleeves cut off to elude a military background. We also included elements of patchwork on his clothes as he does live primality on the streets, and people in this situation tended to embellish their own clothing with scraps.”

Actor Cedric Mays portrays Sterling in the play

STERLING

Characters such as Wolf, Sterling and West are integral parts of the story as well. “Wolf is a numbers runner for a local lottery who fancies himself a smooth operator; hence the long leather jacket, sweaters with flashy chevron patterns, snakeskin boots and Cuban heels. Sterling just came off a short stint in prison, so they issue him a suit, and he is just trying to find his way. West is the town undertaker, so we clothed him in black. His shoes are worn, but they are always polished, so we suspect they’re his only pair.” “I use much vintage clothing; it’s an authenticity that can’t be replicated,” Mathew says. “There is so much that actors bring to these characters, and my sketches are jumping-off points for what actors are naturally attracted to in their portrayals.”

MEMPHIS Speaking to Memphis and his look, Mathew

explains that he’s a self-made man, and through the process of the play much unfolds about him. “We wanted him to dress professionally but remind the audience that he is frugal. Having a set of clothes that mixes and matches a variety of looks with a limited palette was key.”

Recipe Girl's Creator Lori Lange Shares Her Kitchen Renovation LORI LANGE DOESN’T HAVE A BACKGROUND IN FOOD, BUT A COLLEGE JOB SPARKED HER PASSION FOR ENTERTAINING. "I was a teacher for 12 years but then stayed home with my son and wanted to do something. I started my website, Recipe Girl, in 2006 which shared entertaining ideas and recipes. Before I knew it, companies started contacting me to write recipes for them and it took off from there. I now collaborate with companies on products and even wrote a cookbook. It's fun and different and a career I didn’t plan on," she says. When Lori and her family moved to the Valley from Lake Tahoe a year ago, they rented while they decided on an area to call home. "We looked at so many houses and layouts and configurations. The kitchen would be a huge pull for me." 30

North Scottsdale, specifically, DC Ranch, was what the family settled on, and they love the home they have opted to remodel. "The home we found was a smaller model with a large yard for entertaining. I looked at the kitchen and thought I could craft something that would work for my career as well as our lifestyle which entails a great deal of entertaining." Lori says the home has "good bones," and she has a clear vision for the design she wants: light and bright for the videography and photography necessary for her website, a friendly feel, and elements of farmhouse but not cookie cutter. "I am not thinking gray and white but instead want more color in the cabinets and accent colors on the island. It needs to be easy to work in with an area for my husband to tend bar." McKenzie Architectural Kitchens is the company Lori decided on for the renovations. "We interviewed three kitchen design companies, however, owner Don McKenzie saw the vision and had amazing ideas. His interior designer Catherine Monaghan thought of things we hadn’t and took a genuine interest in the space." "For us, it’s the focal point of the home. The kitchen is where everyone gathers, no matter how comfortable your family room is. It’s about hospitality; bringing people into my kitchen is my life."

art-focused excursions close to home THREE NEARBY LANDMARKS TO EXPLORE

Arcosanti Paolo Soleri was an Italian architect with a vision. After studying under Frank Lloyd Wright, he branched out

Arcosanti

with a unique viewpoint on where the world was headed with population explosion. The urban environments were sprawling, and he felt that society needed a shift in how these environments were being designed. Arcosanti was the brainchild of Paolo and is truly a place where architecture meets ecology. This translates to architecture that is sustainable for the environment with passive heating and cooling on-site and a passion for making living space healthier for its inhabitants. Paolo felt there were fundamental links between the way cities were designed and depression/anxiety. He created a place that is totally walkable, with easy access to work and play spaces, so there are no boundaries between work and living. No commute means more time to do things you are passionate about. Arcosanti was a labor that came out of this passion to expand Paolo's vision. Now 15 acres of development, all are built on the model he envisioned. Arcosanti has 75 residents who live there full-time. Tours happen daily, and it is a great day trip for art enthusiasts and architects. Overnight guest accommodations are available, and most notable are the beautiful bells that are crafted on-site and sold at Cosanti Gallery in Paradise Valley. Arcosanti pours 300 pounds per day of bronze for bells. Tourists can watch bronze pouring in the morning at different times, and there are beautiful vantage points to take in the views. The art culture at Arcosanti is unsurpassed, as visitors get exposure to Paolo's extraordinary philosophy. For the serious enthusiast, there is even a six-week workshop program to immerse oneself in the culture and contribute to a work project. Information provided by Timothy Bell at Arcosanti 36

Four Peaks Mining Co.

Four Peaks Mining Co. Store Four Peaks Mine was founded in the 1800s by miners looking for gold. It is now the only commercially mined amethyst mine in the United States and the only mine that is producing gemstones. The mine is so special that it is featured on the Arizona license plate between the four peaks. The mine cannot be visited by hikers. It sits at 7,000 feet, and you can only get in and out by helicopter. For two weekends in April and September, helicopter tours of the mine are offered, and because it is active, visitors can go in and pick amethyst from the walls themselves. For those looking to see the wonder that is Four Peaks without the helicopter tour, there is a piece of this beautiful history in Scottsdale. The Four Peaks Mining Co. Store is located within the OdySea in the Desert Complex and is interactive, with breakopen geodes that you can crack with a geode cracker. There is also a replica of the mine with 30 different minerals built into the wall to identify. Kids and adults alike can grab a miner's helmet and a clipboard to locate minerals from all over the world. The store houses a variety of amethyst jewelry for sale, as well as a mineral garden and petrified wood in front. It is special to own amethyst from Arizona because it is mined here. Visitors can stop in without admission, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Information provided by Susan Emberley at Four Peaks Mining Co. Store

Copenhaver Castle

Copenhaver Castle

38

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | February 2019

Atop Camelback Mountain is a 50-yearold castle that was started by dentist Mort Copenhaver. With no experience in architecture, Mort worked off a vision he sketched on a napkin and wanted to bring to life. He bought an inexpensive plot of land that was thought to be unbuildable and went to work with himself and a two-man crew. Over 12 years, the castle came to life, utilizing rock from Camelback Mountain. This made the castle blend beautifully into its surroundings and was an architectural feature that has made it stand out. The walls are 18 to 24 inches thick, with retaining walls that are 40 feet high. The craftsmanship shows as there are no stress cracks, even after 50 years. Robert Pazderka, the castle’s third owner, bought the castle in 2014 and is currently renovating it. “Mort was using it for fundraisers for his charitable dental work. People would come tour it on the weekends, and he raised money to help those who couldn’t afford needed dental work. My vision for the castle was to leave the front original and unchanged. I extended the deck to wrap around the front for a walk deck. I used the same stone look and kept the castle feel. We’ve added an auto court circle with large panes of 11-by-11-foot glass, inspired by the Louvre in Paris. You can look into the castle and see the old stone, and then windows open to a spectacular view of the city.” While Mort was eccentric in his elements of design—including a 22-person Jacuzzi, a skylight that opened and a fireplace with a waterfall in front of it—Robert has added more practical features, like double doors to open to a great room for added drama. However, the fireplace and water feature are still intact. Copenhaver will open for tours when complete. Did You Know?

A caldera is a large volcanic crater typically formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of a volcano. Forming the southernmost member of the Cyclades island group, Santorini is the remains of the Minoan eruption that, 3,600 years ago, destroyed a formerly single island and created the current caldera.

About 25 minutes up the coast is where you can catch sights of what people often refer to as arguably the best sunsets you’ll ever see. Catch some of the best panoramic views of Santorini from 15th-century Byzantine castle ruins. Situated on the side of caldera cliffs, Oia village offers tons of breathtaking viewing spots. Be sure to get there well before sunset—because of the area’s sundown popularity, you’ll find crowds of people gathered on streets, rooftops and stairs anticipating the one-of-akind experience.

Macerich is committed to bringing a rich variety of new experiences to guests at its top retail properties across the country, and now more than ever, this includes compelling artworks like Kelsey's. Scottsdale Fashion Square is fortunate to unveil her first piece inspired by the colors and drama of the Arizona desert with a Phoenix rising. "For all of the pieces I'm doing for Macerich in Arizona, I was really inspired by the vibrant colors of the desert. I want each of my pieces to reflect how I interpret the sunsets and landscape here in the Southwest," Kelsey says. She says she wants to make sure each piece contains a few smaller images that reflect the community and Arizona in general. "I hope that each community in which I create a piece feels like the piece represents them and becomes a mural they love." Kelsey creates large-scale, interactive street murals around the world, each piece providing an opportunity for people to become a "living work of art." Participants are encouraged to post pictures with the work on social media under the hashtag #whatliftsyou. She even took this phrase to another level with a series of two adult coloring books entitled What Lifts You and What Lifts Your Heart. Her work has been featured by Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Smithsonian and Good Morning America. She has more than 80,000 Instagram followers, whom she encourages to explore how art can—and should—weave itself into their daily lives.
