North Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2019
WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND FITNESS TRENDS, KEEPING UP WITH THE EVER-CHANGING INFORMATION THAT’S OUT THERE CAN BE DIFFICULT. “This one move will change your legs forever;” “You’ll never eat these foods again after you read this story;” or, our favorite, “A glass of wine a day can help you live longer.” When you’re busy juggling the latest workout app craze or cleaning out your refrigerator only to find out a week later that those items are good for you again, it can get overwhelming. So, when you want a break from it all but don’t want to give up feeling sporty, take the trends from your yoga mat to your closet instead and stock up on athleisure wear. As the stylists at Trunk Club, a Nordstrom Company, put it, athleisure isn’t necessarily about working out—it’s designed for a lifestyle. Incorporating chic, comfy silhouettes with sporty pieces gets you through the day with a fashionable vibe you’ll want to sport—no pun intended—on the regular! For more style tips and to get your own trunk today, visit TrunkClub.com.

To resolutions that last … Happy New Year! Whether you’ve got one, or 99, we wish you the drive and resolve to get to a better state™. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.® CALL ME TODAY. I'M CORI ASHLEY, A LONGTIME VEGETARIAN, AVID HOME COOK AND FOOD ENTHUSIAST. Eating whole foods and cooking at home are the intertwined foundation of how I live. What can I create that would make me feel satisfied, fulfilled and content? My meals are built on in-season vegetables and fruits because I believe in their unprocessed, seasonal state. January in the Valley is a month of contrasts for me. My days often begin with my hands wrapped around a warmed ceramic mug, spirals of steam rising from the hot beverage within it. By lunchtime, however, the sunlight is dancing through the leaves

of the tree outside my office, and I’m underneath it, enjoying lunch and a warm breeze. It’s no surprise, then, that the meals I prepare in January contrast each other like the days of this Arizona winter month: roasted vegetables with hearty beans; zesty, herby grain bowls; nutty protein quick breads; and bowls of thick soup are on the same weekly menus as bright, citrus-based salads. It makes sense, in its own contradictory way, and provides enjoyment, variety and wholesome, soul-satisfying meals no matter your dietary needs.

"This beautiful home was perfect for our family vacation. We even brought our two kids and our English bulldog who were thrilled to get out of the Phoenix heat. Each day we loaded up our wagon and took a short walk to the beach where the kids played in the rolling waves all day long. One day, we hopped in the car and had an amazing day at SeaWorld. We cooked dinners at the house of ten, and the fully stocked kitchen made it easy and convenient. We usually ended our nights playing cards under the stars on the outside patio. DINING OUT CAN BE A TRUE CHALLENGE WHEN BEGINNING A HEALTHIER ROUTINE. Between craving high-fat foods and being in a social environment, it can be hard to make smart choices and not feel like you're standing out amongst friends and family. True Food Kitchen, nestled in the popular Scottsdale Quarter, can be a perfect option when you want to dine out while also eating right. Founded in Phoenix in 2008, True Food Kitchen is a restaurant inspired by a philosophy that food should make you feel

and a renowned doctor of integrative medicine who believe delicious dining and conscious nutrition can go hand in hand, without sacrificing flavor, creativity or indulgence. True Food’s seasonal menu is guided by the principles of Dr. Andrew Weil’s anti-inflammatory food pyramid. From nutrient-dense staples and carefully sourced proteins to little-known superfoods, True Food Kitchen is committed to sourcing the most responsible, creative and freshest in-season ingredients. At True Food Kitchen, guests are invited to become part of a world where great-tasting food and thoughtfully crafted beverages—shared in an environment of infectious, accepting positivity—can be the foundation for a life well-lived. "Variety is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of how to best describe True Food Kitchen," chef Robert McCormick says. "Those of us seeking healthy, nutritious food typically run into the problem of having limited menu options when eating out. What’s worse is that the available options are often an afterthought and uninspiring. Each and every dish on True Food Kitchen’s menu is crafted with various nutritious, seasonal ingredients, prepared daily to ensure peak flavor and freshness for even the most discerning guests." 34

Jon Augustin. His drinks pair beautifully with the seasonal dishes for January at True Food Kitchen and have many health benefits you'd be hard-pressed to find at a typical dining establishment. "One of our best cocktails is the Forbidden Root Cocktail, which we pair with our new Mauritius Island Redfish dish, made with lemon-infused vodka, apple, red beet and rosemary," Jon says. "The acidity of the cocktail pairs well with the fish and accentuates the spice of the salsa verde, while the rosemary and beets complement the potatoes. Rosemary also helps with brain function and liver detoxification; red beets help with endurance and boost weight loss. The best cocktail to pair with the new pan-seared chicken is a Director of Beverage Jon Augustin

new winter-inspired cocktail, The Juniper Rose. This is made with rose-infused gin, pamplemousse (grapefruit), lemon and thyme. The subtle thyme notes complement the seared chicken, and the floral notes of the rose tie the vegetables together. Grapefruit is high in antioxidants, rose petals help with arthritis, and thyme reduces stress and helps with heart health." Jon expands on January offerings that are nutrient-dense, flavorful and leave you fulfilled while not veering away from a healthy lifestyle. The sustainably raised Mauritius Island Redfish is an ideal option, served with salsa verde and kale tabbouleh. The kale tabbouleh is a take on the traditional Lebanese salad that uses organic kale instead of parsley and fonio instead of bulgar wheat—both of which pack more nutrients per calorie. Another low-calorie, low-carb entree is the pan-seared chicken breast featuring sauteed broccolini, spinach and edamame and served with a Mediterranean-inspired sauce. "Either one of these two entrees will keep you fully fueled and light on your feet, so you can hit your personal fitness goals more efficiently," he says.
"Fitness and good eating go hand in hand. Whether you’re counting calories or looking to lower your carb intake, look no further than True Food Kitchen."

THE ADVANTAGE TRAINING PROCESS: LIFESTYLE GOAL SCREENING – goal is to optimize the human being first and foremost. BODY COMPOSITION SCREENING – body composition machine looks at fat mass, muscle tissue, basil metabolic rate, etc. MOVEMENT SCREENING – Understanding limits. The process is human movement based not sports performance based.

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | January 2019
So, what can be expected with an initial visit to Advantage Training? It begins with a performance screening process. “We look at sports history, injury history, questions about lifestyle—where would you go or what would you do if you could do anything or go anywhere? We believe people express more in this fashion; it’s more impactful and meaningful,” Spencer says. Results are compiled and put through a classification system to place each client where he or she will have the most effective strategy, as efficiently as possible. It will also focus on limiters such as high body fat, injuries or just needing a wellrounded fitness program. “There’s a misconception that you have to crush yourself at the gym to get results. That couldn’t be further from the truth,” Spencer says.
“We love putting smiles on people’s faces, seeing novices to athletes. We designed our system for everyone’s comfort. No mirrors, no distractions—it’s unnecessary," Mark says. "There is no intimidation so our clients can focus on themselves. That was very intentional when creating Advantage.” January 2019 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

“[Having Lakelyn] was a complete 180, and now every time I have a kid it switches in a different direction—in a good direction,” he continues. “My mindset 100 percent switched when we had Lakelyn. And when we had Trice. And then a third time when we had Violet—in good directions. It’s made me more well-rounded. Balance is hard; to be the best at anything, you can’t really be balanced. Now I’m trying to be the best father and husband I can be. It’s a good challenge; it’s fun.” Rich found some of that seemingly unattainable balance through his transition to team competitions, which have allowed him more of an opportunity to think about training while he’s training and to not think about training while he isn’t. “I get to be present in my life,” he says. “[In individual], even when I was doing other things, I was still thinking about what I needed to do, what I was missing out on. “Competing as an individual for me, I got burnt out,” he continues. “It’s been fun the last couple of years to be able to compete with a team. You push harder when you know somebody else is counting on you, and seeing how hard they push and what they sacrifice makes you want to do the same for them.” Outside of the gym, Rich now spends much of his time using his experience as a CrossFit champion and exercise science degree from Tennessee Tech creating online programming for his gym, CrossFit Mayhem, which is located on Rich Froning Way.
“Winning championships is great, but it’s like the next year somebody else wins...I enjoyed that, but I don’t want that to be what defines me. I want to be known as a good husband, a good father.” Among them are Mayhem Compete, a program for those beginning to take competition seriously or who want to take their fitness to the next level; Mayhem Masters, a program for competitive athletes ages 35-70; What’s Rich Doing, a program offering exactly what Rich is doing every day; Mayhem 60, a complete 60-minute workout for anyone with a garage gym; and M30, a short 30-minute workout designed for someone who travels or wants to work out at home with no access to equipment. Looking toward the future, Rich is in pursuit of moving forward. “Winning championships is great, but it’s like the next year somebody else wins so it’s always different,” Rich says. “I enjoyed that, but I don’t want that to be what defines me. I want to be known as a good husband, a good father. Moving forward [is important] for sure—not getting caught up in one thing that’s stuck—you’ve got to always be thinking about what’s next and what [you] need to do to grow as a person.” For more information about CrossFit Mayhem, access to Rich’s online programs or the opportunity to train alongside him in Cookeville, visit CrossFitMayhem.com. A LIFELONG GOLFER, SCOTT PINCKNEY PICKED UP THE SPORT OF GOLF AT THE AGE OF 8 WITH HIS CAREER TAKING OFF AS A PRO IN EUROPE SOON AFTER GRADUATION FROM ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY. In 2012, Scott came home to the US and received conditional status on the PGA tour, taking second at state in 2013 and obtaining full web status with his PGA Tour card. He was on the PGA Tour in 2014-15 and 2015-16. As many pro athletes can attest to, there is nothing worse than struggling with debilitating pain that affects how they are playing. “After being on tour, I suffered a back injury that involved problems with my L5 disc, preventing me from continuing for nearly a year,” he says. With his back issues came countless meetings with doctors assessing his pain and what could be done to manage it, including stem cell injections. When Scott returned, he made it to the playoffs, which put him in a position to get his PGA Tour card back. “I just missed it. I finished 8th, and top 5 were able to get their cards. My back was telling me I wasn’t ready. I knew this is where I belonged, but I needed to give myself time. My doctors thought it was time for a trainer to gain strength and put on weight." Scott found Advantage Training and in doing so was able to strengthen his back to increase his ability to play again. “There are training programs that are offered to guide athletes to achieve higher performance in their sport, working directly with trainers who increase agility, strength and resiliency in individuals. I worked directly 44

with my trainer, Spencer, who helped produce medical improvements through my movement patterns that have led to an increase in my performance over the past year,” Scott says. Not only does Advantage Training provide services for athletes, but they also offer services to meet individuals’ goals for improving their overall well-being and health based on what makes each person unique, Scott adds. Scott has set goals for 2019 that focus on getting his PGA Tour card back, along with his confidence

My emotions and spirits were based on my back and how it felt day-to-day. It was a rollercoaster. Advantage has helped me because their knowledge is unsurpassed. based clothing brand is servicing many communities—including North Scottsdale—with its innovative pieces. IBKUL has found longevity in the market due to its patented IceFil high-tech fabric. It actually cools the body up to 5 degrees, while maintaining a UPF 50 rating. The IceFil Technology’s magic begins when you start to perspire. Perspiration triggers the chemical xylitol that the individual fabric fibers are treated with. The xylitol compound soothes and cools the skin to the touch by converting sweat to refrigerant. Coupled with the ability to possess moisture-wicking and anti-microbial features, IBKUL can keep you feeling fresh and clean regardless of the high temperatures. Style has not taken a backseat with IBKUL. It has combined innovative fabric with exclusive bright and beautiful resort prints that have taken the activewear market to the next level. Golfers, tennis players, yogis, equestrians and busy moms on the go all love to wear IBKUL. FIND IBKUL AT THESE NORTH SCOTTSDALE LOCATIONS: + The Boulders Resort + Desert Mountain Country Club
