Brighter Tomorrow Hope Luncheon

In their first-ever combined fundraising luncheon, Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) and Sojourner Center, an affiliate subsidiary of JFCS, raised $400,000 at its Brighter Tomorrow Hope Luncheon, held Friday, March 2, at the Arizona Biltmore. The luncheon was attended by more than 500 people and focused specifically on domestic violence awareness.

BEAT THE HEAT AND FEED YOUR CHILDREN'S CRAVING FOR CREATIVITY Scottsdale Artists’ School hosts weekly Youth and Teen Summer Fine Art Camps for children and teens. The Youth Academy, ages 6-14, begins May 29, and Teen Academy, ages 14-18 starts June 4. All sessions are held in the school’s art studios and taught by professional teaching artists. Each session incorporates an array of 2D art mediums such as drawing, painting, watercolor, mixed media, as well as 3D art mediums such as relief, additive, found objects, and hand building with clay. Students get creative, explore new techniques, learn how to prepare their art for show, and share their creations in an art show with reception at the end of each session. All art supplies are included. SAS, located in one of the oldest historic buildings in Old Town Scottsdale, offers a very robust Youth and Teen Academy with weekly classes for all skill levels. HOTTEST RACE ON EARTH RETURNING AFTER FIVE YEARS After a five-year hiatus, the hottest race on earth, Scottsdale’s Beat the Heat, is returning June 16 to WestWorld of Scottsdale as part of the new Scottsdale Fahrenheit Festival: Arms, Legs and Kegs event. The 10.22-kilometer race and a shorter 5K will take place throughout the grounds of WestWorld, adjacent to the McDowell Mountain golf course owned by Phil Mickelson, just days before the hottest day to ever be recorded in Phoenix. Sponsored by Maricopa Ambulance, there will be no early morning start to avoid the broiling temps. Nor will this be a race at dusk when the cooler air begins creeping in. The gun will go off at 2:47 p.m. sharp, the time of day in 1990 when thermometers in the Phoenix metropolitan area struck 122 degrees on June 26. To recognize the hottest day on record, the entry fee for the 10.22 distance will be $62.60 per person and includes a souvenir T-shirt. The entry fee for the shorter 5K distance will be $51 and also includes a souvenir T-shirt. Register now at ScottsdaleFahrenheitFestival.com. “THE PROGRAM INSPIRES GIRLS TO BE THE AUTHORS OF THEIR OWN STORIES AND FOREVER CHANGES THE WAY THEY SEE THEMSELVES AND THEIR OPPORTUNITIES.”

EMPOWERING WOMEN MAY BE A TRENDING TOPIC RIGHT NOW, BUT A LOCAL ORGANIZATION HAS BEEN FOCUSED ON THIS MISSION FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS. “Via our programming at Girls on the Run, we educate girls on the positive impact they can have in their communities,” Executive Director Meagan Kukowski says. Girls on the Run serves Maricopa and Pinal Counties and is a nonprofit positive youth development program dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her potential. The organization was founded in 2004 and has served more than 10,000 local girls and their families. The program consists of a 10-week program where girls in third-eighth grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. In addition to the program, each team of girls creates and executes a local community service project. This experience allows girls to witness the positivity that comes from helping others. Volunteers make Girls on the Run successful by serving as coaches at schools and sites across the Valley. Many of these volunteers are women and attest to the pride that comes from guiding girls along their journey of self-confidence. Meagan first got involved with Girls on the Run as a volunteer coach in 2005 while working for another nonprofit, but quickly saw the girls have breakthrough transformations and attained a larger role to assist in the program’s growth. “During my first season coaching, we served about 40 girls. Last year we served over 10,000,” she says. Girls on the Run was recently included as a top researchbased program in a Social-Emotional Learning Guide developed by researchers at Harvard University and has been recognized by the National Afterschool Association as one of the most influential after-school programs today. This coupled with rave reviews from parents makes it an organization destined to help young women achieve lifelong success and confidence. “One of our parents recently said that her daughter gained awareness of concepts like negative self-talk, and the program helped her to change the way she views the world and the way she views herself," Meagan says. "In today’s society, that is essential."

Laurie is a testament to what theater should be. She prides herself on creating a legacy for her late husband and wants each actor that steps on her stages to feel confident and happy. COMBINING LUXURY AND A WARM ATMOSPHERE WAS KEY WHEN APRIL MARTINEZ STARTED THE HILLS SALON AND SPA. “Serenity and glamour were both important when I renovated the space that is now The Hills," she says. "The best part of being a girl is sparkle, but I didn’t want my male clientele to be threatened by the design. It’s an amazing experience for men and women alike.” Coming from a diverse background allowed April to be savvy when deciding on important salon elements. “I worked in marketing and am an esthetician," she says. "The combined skills help me to run a successful business.” April wants her artists to work in a space that allows them to pursue their passion. She also wants clients to have a one-stop shop for a special event. The nearly 4,000-square-foot salon opens to a lovely waiting area and fully stocked boutique with the latest trends in jewelry and décor. The space includes nail stations and hair stations, as well as several treatment rooms. “Aesthetically it’s stunning," April says. "When you enter, take a deep breath and drink it all in, I think you’ll find it’s a total experience that will leave you feeling renewed.”
