HOW DID ONE LOCAL INDIE ROCK BAND ON THE RISE GET THEIR START? Well, as New Chums, of course. “The New Chums met through my Craigslist exploration. I was a singer and wanted to continue playing music when I moved to Arizona in 2013," says Seth Boyack, vocalist/ guitarist for The New Chums. "I wasn’t finding what I was looking for as a singer/guitarist, so instead of joining a band, I decided to start my own.” Along with drummer Ben Hedlund, guitarist Matt Lloyd and bassist Cassandra Clark, The New Chums were solidified in 2017—and the rest is history. Or as Seth says, they are in the process of making history.

He loves to perform live and truly adores his bandmates. “I’m less concerned with being a rock star and more focused on performing, recording and being with people who I love.” Boyack says that regardless of backgrounds, they are each seasoned musicians who (he jokes) also look cool in band photos. What is in store for The New Chums in 2019? The new year goals for the band include finding a label to release a full-length record in the U.S. and overseas, get airtime in stadiums during pro or college games—which might happen very soon—and of course, having a song in a movie so Ben says he can, “have popcorn and listen to Seth sing to me in a theater.” The success The New Chums have had is no joking

FINDING A FACILITY FOR PARENTS AS THEY AGE IS DIFFICULT. The importance of having the comforts of home while obtaining optimal care to meet their specific needs and keep them active and social are all factors to consider. North Scottsdale Retreat is a part of Aventa Senior Care, which was founded in 2010 by an experienced Scottsdale firefighter and a team of licensed nurses. This allows them to provide a level of expertise for seniors that is uncommon in the home healthcare industry. Aventa was recently awarded "Best of Home Care" for the third year in a row by the largest home care review source in the country, placing them in the top 1 percent of all agencies based on customer feedback. In 2017, Aventa began purchasing homes to provide the same high level of care for seniors in a warm and friendly care home setting. This particular Assisted Care Home is located at 23402 N. 84th St. in Scottsdale. Everything your loved one needs to remain safe and comfortable at home is included, such as private bedrooms with individual room temperature controls, cable, a wall-mounted TV and personalized call pendants; three nutritious home-cooked meals plus snacks served throughout the day; medication management with personal reminders; a 24-hour awake staff; assistance with mobility, bathing, personal care and hygiene as needed; and all activities of daily living. A laundry, house cleaning and customized assistance program are also on site.

Regular opportunities for entertainment and socialization are important at North Scottsdale Retreat. Resident Heinz Kagerer said, "I like the exercise class," while resident Peter Frischmann added, "I enjoy being outdoors and the vegetable gardens. Watching the birds is also wonderful." While the holidays can often be difficult for new residents, as it differs from holiday seasons' past, new traditions are upon them at the Retreat. Making gingerbread houses for display; a family-style dinner for the residents and their families; and a Winter Wonderland Formal is planned, including entertainment, a formal dinner, dancing and photos with Santa Claus. The residents will be sending special cards and gifts to their sponsored child in Haiti as well. Festive decor is abundant at the Retreat, and there is a warmth as soon as you enter. The most important facet of the Retreat is that family is always welcomed to stop by and visit their loved ones whenever it’s convenient for them. Family member Sue McCollough said, "I cannot imagine a better place for my father to be as we enter a difficult time in both his and our family's time of life. North Scottsdale Retreat is not a facility, it is a beautiful home with warm, caring people who understand his individual needs and personality and treat him with dignity and friendship. My father loves the outdoors, and it makes me happy to see him enjoying all the bird feeders, plants and surrounding wildlife in the beautiful yard."
