think it’s safe to say that I inherited my passion for volunteering from my mother. A teacher, and one of the strongest, kindest and most compassionate hearts that I knew, my mother always made it a point to get involved with the community in one way or another—from fundraising for the annual Pumpkin Festival and Christmas Drive to starting new after school clubs for her students and even becoming my Girl Scout leader, she always served selflessly. I remember those years as a Girl Scout visiting retirement homes and putting on plays for the residents, planting flowers and trees in parks and writing thank you notes to local service men. It was through activities like these that, even at a young age, I learned that the satisfaction you got from giving to others far outweighed the little time it took to show someone you cared.

I took this spirit of service with me all the way throughout high school, where I became passionately involved in helping out at a small church-run preschool for children living in rough circumstances, coming to not only admire the children for their resilience, but the teachers as well for their unending kindness. Then it was off to college, where, at Pepperdine University, a very much service-oriented school, I spent three years working as a teacher’s aid in special needs and first through third grade classes for America Reads. Today, as editor of North Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Chandler Lifestyle Magazines, I have been incredibly blessed to have gotten to know and become involved with some of the many organizations around the Valley, such as St. Jude, JFCS and J3T, Childhelp, PANDA, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and many more. Although all these groups help very diverse causes, they all have one thing in common: the people behind them. I have seen first hand how just one person’s simple act of kindness can change someone’s day, week or even life; and when they all get together something truly amazing happens and lives all over are touched and hearts are healed. To all those caring hearts out there, keep doing what you are doing because you are truly making a difference. You are truly appreciated. Thank you.

Housing Hope FIRST PLACE AZ PARTNERS WITH COX COMMUNICATIONS TO OPEN THE DOORS TO A NEW WAY OF LIVING FOR THOSE WITH AUTISM

enise Resnik is dedicated to providing solutions. When her son Matthew was diagnosed with autism 23 years ago, Resnik set out to learn as much as she could about the developmental disorder, and quickly realized that she couldn’t do it alone. So, she co-founded the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) three years after her son was born. And naturally, as any mother would, she started thinking about his fate from the get-go. “I’ve been dreaming about what will happen when the school bus stops coming almost from the day it arrived; and it was a very natural place for me to go to think about where Matthew is going to live and who’s going to support him,” she says. “I remember visiting some of the properties [for people with special needs] early on, and I also remember running away as fast as I possibly could. I didn’t want to see the future. I didn’t want to see that future.” That’s when she decided to take fate into her own hands and make her son’s future brighter. SARRC, the Urban Land Institute and Arizona State University joined forces to research more than 100 different residential properties for young adults like Matthew. However, during her search, she either came across places that were 100-percent supported by the government or by charity, and neither 16

option appealed to her. So, Resnik brought the public, private and charitable sectors together and founded First Place AZ in 2012—a sister nonprofit to SARRC that seeks to provide individuals with special needs with housing and a supportive community environment. First Place-Phoenix is the first in a collection of properties that are slated to start appearing all over the country. The 54-apartment building is located at 3rd Street and Catalina in Downtown Phoenix, giving residents access to the light rail, employment and

post-secondary opportunities. An on-site leadership institute will also be dedicated to advancing public policy to create more options for those with disabilities. And private companies have recently taken note. As of September 2016, Cox Communications is First Place’s exclusive telecommunications partner. “They’re providing us with grant money for technology that can be used to help individuals live more independently and allow us to train and educate more direct support service providers,” Resnik says. “We can open doors to more options for more people with special needs.” Many people with disabilities lose a support system after their formal education has ended. As a result of this, the “group of individuals with autism slide backwards at a far greater rate than any other disability group,” she says. But First Place hopes to change that. “The most important thing for our residents is that they have a home. A place where they can be themselves. They can learn. They can be safe,” Resnik says. “Also, where their families can benefit from peace of mind, knowing that their sons and daughters are happy, have friends and have a community that supports them.” First Place-Phoenix is slated to open in early 2018, and Resnik hopes the community may serve as a blueprint for other future properties. “It will have an impact throughout Arizona,” she says. “And we hope across the country.” For more information, please visit, FirstPlaceAZ.org.

or a child who has been pulled out of their home and placed into foster care, the world can be an understandably uncertain place. But while the state and relatives battle it out in court, there is a third group of dedicated volunteers who take the time to listen to the kids and help make sure their voices don’t get lost in the chaos. These Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) get to know the children first, both through regular visits and by talking with people important in their lives in an effort to be able to make informed recommendations for the short and long-term needs of the child. “We feel like CASA’s bringing hope to the children,” explains VOICES for CASA Children Executive Director Robin Pearson. “Your job is to help the child navigate through the system, so there is definitely some mentoring going on, but it also gives them someone who listens to them and really cares for them.” Through being one constant in a foster child’s inconsistent world, CASA volunteers advocate for the child by helping to push their cases along and ensuring that they are receiving proper services for their needs and environment. Once assigned to a case, the individual CASA will be there to see that case through to its conclusion, and until the child is placed in a permanent home. Through it all, they are there to listen and help the child not get overwhelmed by the process.

“If we can just change one life, then it is worth all of the work we have done,” says Larry, a CASA volunteer. “I think volunteering for CASA is the best thing I have done, because in social services you have direct and indirect services, and this is definitely direct. When I sit in a court room and a judge finds out there is a CASA in attendance, that is pretty much the best feeling ever, because you have a voice and are able to impact that child in a positive way.” The ultimate goal is for each child to have their own individual Advocate assigned to them, but with more than 13,000 children in the court system, and only about 600 active advocates to go around, VOICES is actively recruiting to help in achieving that goal. No special background or educated is needed, and once accepted into the program, there is a pre-service training of a minimum 30 hours and an average of 15 a month once they have been assigned their first case, including spending time with the child and attending court hearing and meetings. n 1992, brothers Dane and Travis Boersma got an espresso machine and started experimenting with different coffee drinks. They got pretty good at it and decided to sell their drinks from a pushcart in their town of Grants Pass, Oregon. The brothers, who grew up on a dairy farm, then decided to take their passion for espresso and create a coffee company called Dutch Bros. Coffee. Today, there are 269 stores in seven western states and it is the largest privately held drive-thru coffee company in the nation. However, it was husband and wife franchise owners, Jim Thompson and Janice McCarthy, who brought Dutch Bros. to the Valley, where they owned several homes for over 30 years. Thompson previously owned an auto dealership in Klamath Falls, Oregon. During the time he ran his dealership, he also worked eight years for Dutch Bros. Then, in 2007, he and Janice opened their first store near the ASU campus in Tempe. They now have 15 locations, with another two scheduled to open next year. Their North Scottsdale location has the only indoor/outdoor Dutch Bros. Espresso Bar and Drive-Thru in the Valley.

There are a few key items that set Dutch Bros. apart from other coffee establishments: the sales tax is included in the price of each item; there is no charge for extra flavor or whipped cream; you can order your drink your way, with non-fat and sugar-free options; and you receive a punch card redeemable after ten punches for any drink in any size. All coffee drinks can be served iced, blended or hot. 20

For over 20 years, Dutch Bros. has served a blend of coffee from imported coffee beans from El Salvador, Brazil and Colombia. Their proprietary blend is served in every store and is roasted by hand, blended by hand and ground and pulled by hand, creating a smooth, rich, full-bodied coffee. It is using a ristretto shot, which is an Italian-style of espresso shot, that creates the bolder, richer flavor. A procedure was pioneered that streamlines the customer’s wait in line by taking their order on an iPad and having them pay while they wait in line. The coded order then appears on an iPad in the store. The goal is to have each car served in 40 seconds or less. So, if there is a 12-car line, the wait will be only five minutes. GIVING BACK

Dutch Bros. adopted “The Optimist Creed,” which is based on treating people right, and renamed it The Dutch Creed. From the corporate staff to the employees in the stores, it’s all about extending kindness. All 540 employees who work throughout the Valley emulate this creed daily by giving over-the-top service.

hey say it takes a village to raise a child; and that is certainly true. Motherhood is a tremendously wonderful journey brimming with endless love, laughter, happiness and small but cherished moments that make up a lifetime of precious memories. Yet, at times, this journey can also be confusing, overwhelming and a little bit lonely without a clear guide book to help with all those unexpected situations. That’s where having a strong system of support and encouragement comes into play, and no one knows the importance of this better than founder of City Moms Blog Network Stephanie Files. Files launched the Network’s flagship site, Scottsdale Moms Blog, with a good friend back in 2010 with the goal of creating a platform that would help connect local moms with each other through 24

helpful, relevant content that would resonate with their daily lives. “I feel like motherhood is such a time that so many women feel insecure and helpless,” says Files. “So our goal for the network has always been to be mindful of how we are connecting moms.” A year into Scottsdale Moms Blog, Files saw the need to connect moms on both a local and national level, so she launched City Moms Blog Network, bringing on their first sister site, Dallas, in 2011, and it has been nothing short of immensely enjoyable and fulfilling since. “We now currently have 64 sites throughout the nation, and serve about two to four million readers across the U.S. on a monthly basis,” says Files. “We just really love doing what we do in terms of connecting moms locally and nationally, and empowering women to become strong, confident entrepreneurs.”

However, in 2015, Files felt the strings of her heart being pulled in a new direction and began thinking about what more City Moms Blog Network could do to make an impact worldwide. Then, as if by fate, Food for the Hungry approached the Network late last year about potentially partnering together. “I just couldn’t say no,” says Files. “One of the core values of City Moms Blog network is to inspire, and I felt like through our partnership with Food for the Hungry we would be able to inspire moms outside of their homes and communities to really do something to change the lives of those who have far less than us.” Next thing Files knew, she, along with three other City Moms Blog Network representatives, was on a plane to Guatemala to experience first-hand the work Food for the Hungry did in other countries. Upon their arrival, the women made a stop at the Food for the Hungry Guatemala office, where Files heard the director say something that changed her whole perspective of the the trip. “As we were about to leave, the director looked at us and said ‘I would encourage you all to not look at the needs and feel compassion, but rather to see the beauty in it; that God created them to be exactly where they are, and that is beautiful,’” she recalls. And beautiful it was. Although only Files and three other representatives went to Guatemala, the mission of Food for the Hungry and their child sponsorship program touched the hearts of City Moms Blog members across the country. This included Scottsdale Moms Blog co-owners Jessica Becker and Angela Barako, who, along with City Moms Blog, are working to help sponsor 300 children in Guatemala. “The reason why we picked this organization to support is, as mothers ourselves, we can really empathize and have a good understanding of what these mothers and children are going through,” says Barako. “So it’s personal in a sense that we can all understand the passion that we have for our children no matter what our economic backgrounds are.” “And if we have the chance to help, love and support other children and not just our own, why not? Every bit of help that we can give them is life-changing,” adds Becker. That is what is truly at the heart of both City Moms Blog and Food for the Hungry: enriching the lives of moms and children locally, nationally and internationally; proving that a mother’s love truly knows no boundaries. hen Lauren Daniels was 35, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time of her diagnosis, Daniels, a North Scottsdale resident, had kids who ranged from 1 to 11 years old. And although she had to have a difficult three surgeries in four months, Daniels credits her husband, Sean, her family and her friends with giving her the strength to get through the ordeal. “I had such an amazing support system,” she says. “Several months into my recovery, I was chatting with another mom named Janet who also had breast cancer. She told me she could not talk long because she had to take her son to hockey practice. It was literally at this moment that I realized that although a cancer diagnosis is never

welcome at any age, being a mom with cancer comes with a whole different set of challenges.” Daniels then decided that she wanted to do something to help other mothers battling cancer. So, in 2004, she founded the Happily Ever After League (HEAL), a non-profit organization that provides financial and other forms of support to mothers with cancer. “On the one-year anniversary of my diagnosis, we had a silent auction dinner with 200 people who knew me in one way, shape or form, and raised $50,000 that night,” says Daniels.“I knew we were in business then and had already reached out to many social workers and doctors offices. They started referring patients to us almost immediately and still do today.” CONTINUED >

Since founding HEAL, Daniels says around 1,000 local moms have received help and support. “We help an average of 70 new moms per year,” she says, adding that HEAL has met its goal of never turning away a qualifying mom in need. One of the many ways that HEAL helps moms who are in active cancer treatment is through a one-time financial grant in the form of a gift card. “The gift card can be used to pay for medical co-payments, mediations, gas needed to get to appointments or whatever their greatest need is,” Daniels says. Another way moms with cancer get support through HEAL is by visiting the HEALing House, located in a residential neighborhood not far from the Paradise Valley Mall in Phoenix, which Daniels opened in October, 2007. “We opened the HEALing House because we had a park day for our families and realized how much they needed the social support

of others going through cancer recovery,” she says. “We knew the grants were helpful, but we wanted to do more.” “All of our events are very uplifting; it is like a support group without the circle. We do craft projects, give makeovers and have movie nights, as well as many holiday-related parties. We also have a food pantry that is open once a month,” she adds. Daniels is now very grateful to announce that she has celebrated 13 years of being cancer free. “My oncologist broke up with me a couple of years ago, and that was one of the best break ups I could say I have had,” she says. Founding HEAL has also been a big part of Daniels’ own healing process as well. “Sometimes helping moms with cancer can hit a little too close to home, but the rewards of knowing our efforts have made a difference in so many lives far outweighs the difficult parts.” To learn more about HEAL and/or to make a donation or apply for assistance, visit HappilyEverAfterLeague.org.

INS T RUC T IO NS Preheat oven to 375°F. Generously butter a muffin tin with 2 tablespoons butter. Place 4 tablespoons butter and olive oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. When melted, add bay leaf and vegetables in order listed; then add apples. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and seasoning. Cook 5-7 minutes, until beginning to soften; then add parsley, stuffing mix and 2 cups broth. Stir well to combine. If mixture is dry, add additional broth until moist but not wet. Remove bay leaf. Using an ice cream scoop, divide stuffing into muffin tins. Press firmly into tins, mounding tops. Sprinkle with paprika, as desired. Bake until set and tops are slightly crisp, about 10-12 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature. Like clockwork, the Sixth Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships will return once again to West World of Scottsdale on November 5, 2016, promising an extravaganza brimming with the best of sports, entertainment, fashion and culture. ome might say I was raised in a barn. And in many ways they’re right, but not because of my manners. Six months out of college, I traded heals for boots to manage the barn at Camelot, a North Scottsdale therapeutic riding center that teaches horsemanship to children and adults who have disabilities. I held many titles during the 14 years I worked there, but two remained consistent: riding instructor and volunteer coordinator. During that time, I learned invaluable life lessons from the diverse team who gave their time freely so we could offer services at no cost. They are the ones who helped shape who I am today.

MIND OVER MATTER

The retirees who toiled in the garden and cleaned the barn inspired me. Age is truly mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. They shoveled it, dumped it and bedded stalls with the best of them. They also taught me that it’s never too late to pick-up a new skill, as some began their journey at Camelot with little more than a trail ride under their belt. THE ZEN OF POO

Whether the project is stuffing envelopes or cleaning water buckets, hard work is rewarding and at times cathartic. And knowing that you don’t need to do it, but choose to do it for the betterment of someone else is the icing on the cake. One volunteer ranch hand said she experienced the Zen of poo every time she volunteered. No, she wasn’t referring to Whinny the Poo, yet she truly found peace and healing in the work.

GIVING IS GETTING

During my first year at Camelot, I quickly bonded with the volunteer team and felt indebted to them for working alongside me as I learned the ropes. That spring, we hosted an end of season VIP (Volunteers are Important People) brunch to thank everyone for their service. After everyone had a plate of food, I asked them to share their most memorable moment of the year. Little did I know that they would teach me a lesson I would carry with me forever. The first person to stand didn’t share a memory, but thanked me for the opportunity to volunteer. Each person thereafter thanked me as well. I was overwhelmed by their kindness, and to be honest, a little baffled. They gave their time, worked hard and asked for nothing in return; yet they thanked me for the opportunity. After some reflection, their kind words took on a new light. Year two at Camelot, my mentor told me that people want and need an opportunity to give, and it was my responsibility to provide it to them. I learned that in return for one’s service, their cup is filled in personal ways. Perhaps it’s filled with joy from helping others and new friendships made in the barn, or with horses and the beauty of the desert, or with the satisfaction of a hard day’s work. It’s a little different for everyone. I challenge you to find your passion and volunteer for a nonprofit organization worthy of your time. Your cup will be filled with something surprising, while making a difference in the life of another. This is your opportunity to give.
