Celebrate Fine Wine and Bountiful Beer I

’ve personally been lucky enough to experience the winemaking process first-hand while in Italy, and the experience was one that I will not soon forget. It was a crisp, chilly mid-September morning; the sun was just peeking out over the hills, casting a golden glow over the whole city. I sat in the back of the van, wrapped up in my sweatshirt, sipping the frothy cappuccino that was warming my hands. I looked out the window to see fields of bright sunflowers, farms with grazing cattle and old brick houses with ashy smoke rising out from the chimneys as we made our way from the city center onto a quiet dirt road in the countryside.

With the sun now fully risen in the sky, I beheld a wondrous sight before me as we stopped: row upon row of lush green vines dotted with plump purple grapes as far as the eye could see. Once on the vineyard, we were greeted by a husband, wife and their three children, who soon informed us that we would be spending our day picking grapes for the harvest. I was handed an old, dirt-laden bucket and directed to the part of the vineyard where I would be working. Four hours later, my jeans were soaked knee deep with thick mud, my shirt had splotches of purple all over and my hands had turned a greenish-brown color—I had never felt so exhausted yet so accomplished. Luckily, upon our return to the house, a brick pizza oven radiating warmth was firing up handmade pies and a full picnic table laden with every Italian specialty in the book greeted us. After devouring the sizeable meal, we helped clean before relaxing under the shade of the trees while the kids taught the boys from our group how to really play soccer. As the sun began to set and we prepared to leave, I looked at my hands: they were calloused and a little scarred, and there was still dirt under my fingernails, but I had spent the day reconnecting with the land and had gained a true appreciation for it.

ootball and beer are one of those “made for each other” combos that go together like peanut butter and jelly, Batman and Robin, and Arizona and sunshine. While beer fans certainly don’t need an excuse to quaff their favorite beverage any other time of the year, when the temperatures start to (finally) drop and their favorite teams are hitting the grid-iron, football season is definitely the perfect time to pour and enjoy a cold one. Doug Ledger, Managing Partner of Scottsdale Beer Company, says he expects several of their beers and stouts to be especially popular with customers this fall. In addition to a wide variety of beers, Scottsdale Beer Company also features plenty of “stick to your ribs” comfort foods that are all made in-house. “Tom Davidson and I are the founding partners; we opened in January of 2015 with a 220-seat brewpub and a 10BBL brewhouse.

We hand-crafted over 75 unique beers in our first year of operation, and sold just under 1000BBLS of beer in that same time,” Ledger says. “We also have an incredibly talented chef, Alex Schreivogel, who came over to SBC after four years of working under local, renowned chef, Kevin Binkley.” From whipping up house-made sauces and dressings to smoking and curing all of their own meats and sausages, hungry customers will find plenty of tempting choices at Scottsdale Beer Company to fill them up while imbibing. “On the beer side, we tend to favor high alcohol beers, with most of our seven beers currently on tap sitting over 7% ABV,” Ledger says.

erome, Arizona, is a tiny mountain town that was once home to the most productive copper mine in the world back in the early 1900s. The wealth from the mine brought thousands to Jerome, and with it a slew of bars, bandits and other unsavory types, earning the city the nickname of "the wickedest town of the West." Even more, Jerome is teeming with stories of ghosts lingering long after the mine closed back in 1952. However, this “haunted” town is now a thriving art-and-wine-centric city. Here, take a journey through Jerome’s storied, haunted past and very much alive and vibrant present.

THE CONNOR HOTEL

Peeking out from the mountain tops, the towering 30,000-squarefoot Jerome Grand Hotel stands one-mile-high and offers spectacular, sweeping views of the city. It was once the best hospital in all of Arizona, but after closing in 1950, it stood vacant for decades. Now, remodeled as a 25-room hotel and restaurant, it is perhaps the most haunted spot in the entire city. One story tells of a hotel worker who was allegedly crushed to death by the key-operated elevator and still resides within the hotel walls. Daring individuals should book room

The Connor Hotel’s history is as colorful as that of the city in which it resides. Constructed in 1898 as a high-end hotel, the building burned down twice within two years of opening. It closed again in 1931, reopened in the 1960s during the town’s revival and closed again in the 1980s. It is now home to 12 quaint rooms and a happening bar and live music venue, the Spirit Room Bar. There are conflicting reports, but allegedly, you can hear a woman’s voice and a dog growling sometimes at night if you listen closely. ConnorHotel.com

MILE HIGH GRILLE & INN

Built in 1899, the Mile High Grille & Inn on Main Street was once the home of undertakers, madams and a ghost kitty, although many believe they never left. Don’t be surprised if you find that your towels and pillow have been moved while staying at the hotel; the cat might even “sleep” in your bed or leave indentations on the covers. tepping into Tutti Santi by Nina is like being transported to Italy; you will enjoy delicious food, fine wine and warm, authentic Italian hospitality. For the past 16 years, owner Leonardo Zacchino has brought the magic of Italy to Scottsdale for his guests to experience, if only for a couple of hours. It’s evident that Zacchino loves what he does, as no detail is overlooked. His passion has helped him create a comfortable family atmosphere. “Tutti Santi is a place where families and friends can come and feel like they are part of our family. Our goal is to provide the finest food, the best wine and the warmest hospitality to everyone who dines with us,” says Zacchino. “It’s a place where memories are made.” Zacchino has been in the restaurant industry most his life. He sold his restaurant and moved from San Remo, Italy in 1996 to join his dear friend, Nina Vincenti, in the United States. Together, they created a legendary ristorante. Even though Vincenti has taken off her chef ’s hat, her legacy continues to live on in each of her simple, flavorful recipes that are now prepared by Chef Giovanni.

Perfect Pairings For the first course, I enjoyed grilled octopus over a bed of lettuce paired with Argentiera Poggio Al Ginepri Bolgheri Rosso. This deep ruby wine has wonderful hints of cherries, plums, white flowers and traces of Syrah pepper. The Bolgheri is a smooth wine that has a nice, fresh sweetness. It made a delightful accompaniment to the grilled octopus with its flavorful blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine was equally enjoyed with the housemade ravioli, wonderfully complementing its light dough and delicious filling. The next course was the Osso Buco Milanese, a tender center cut of veal paired with Ciacomo Borgogno Barolo. It’s a classic Barolo 32

made from 100% nebbiolo grapes and has an aroma of dried roses and tobacco leaf with hints of cocoa and dried cherries. The flavor of black cherry and raspberries made it an outstanding choice with the delicious Osso Buco. The tannis of the wine, which is the textural element that makes it taste dry, gave it a perfect balance when paired with this veal favorite. The presentation of this entrée is a visionary feast, only to be savored and served on Thursdays. The generous portion can easily serve two, and is accompanied by risotto a dente and vegetables. The final course was Cioppino di Pesce Mediterranea, a medley of seafood that includes mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp and red snapper in a white wine sauce. The soup paired nicely with the Castello Banfi San Angelo Pinot Grigio. The white-gold colored wine’s bouquet has hints of pear, peach, anise and honey. It’s crisp, refreshing taste was thoroughly enjoyed with this fresh, intriguing seafood dish. Lorenzo Mattoni, a Sommelier Level 2 and Luxury Wine Specialist for Breakthru Beverage, selected these excellent wines that paired so well with each course. His knowledge and expertise of wine, and the delicious food selection by Zacchino, made my visit truly memorable. “Most wines are made in the vineyards and not in the winery. The quality of the grape equals the quality of the wine,” says Mattoni.
