April— Explore!

April 2023 PUBLISHER

Julie LaCroix | julie.lacroix@citylifestyle.com MANAGING EDITOR

Explore. Just the word can elicit fear in some. But what does it really mean to explore? In today's world, many of us try to carefully curate our lives to ensure the highest level of control and the least amount of uncertainty. But to find a life that is fulfilling, we must leave some room for exploring, trying new places and things, being a beginner and even getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. I find this issue is apropos for me. My husband and I recently sold our house in North Peoria and moved full-time into our dream fifth-wheel trailer. We're going to be exploring the US for the next couple of years. Arizona is still home, but we're searching for all of those new beginnings, new places and new things. And yes, you'll see some of our adventures in the travel section of future issues. But your explorations don't have to be that crazy. Finding new adventures and exploring can happen closer to home—or maybe even at home by finding a new board game that everyone can play together or baking cookies together for no special reason. Maybe it's eating at a new restaurant in town— have you tried Serra Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse? Or perhaps it's heading to Turquoise Wine Bar and asking to sample unique and new-to-you wines. Maybe it's taking the kids and pitching a tent at Lake Pleasant to do some hiking and playing in the water for a weekend. Have you visited Sedona recently for some great hiking, spectacular views and amazing food? Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from your regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you've been dreaming about. To make time for the things that matter most to you. I hope you take time this month to get lost, if only for a little while. I'll be exploring and writing from the road until this fall, so drop me a line and I'll see you around town after the triple-digit temps disappear.

HERE’S TO STRONG WOMEN… We all know dozens of incredible women in our lives. You could think of your wife, mother, sisters, daughters, aunts, and friends. Or you’re an amazing woman yourself! Many of our clients are women, and they all have similar values. Some of these include maintaining their lifestyles, aging gracefully, not becoming a physical or financial burden to their loved ones, and ensuring their family continues to be cared for — even when they are gone. Because of these values and the vital role they play in everyday life, it’s crucial that women have an estate plan. Unfortunately, there are many myths surrounding estate planning that can hinder the way you go about planning. So, in honor of March 8 being International Women’s Day, we wanted to highlight two common myths about estate planning and cast light on the truths behind them.

MYTH NO. 1: ‘All I need is a will.’ Although a will can help you outline your wishes about the distribution of your assets, it will only go into effect when you pass away. If you fall ill or become incapacitated, your will won’t provide any assistance. With only a will in place, your estate will go through probate, which is a lengthy and costly process. MYTH NO. 2: ‘I don’t need to set up an estate plan because I don’t have children, my estate isn’t large enough, or I’m not old enough.’ Estate planning is for everyone! It doesn’t matter how old you are, how big your estate is, or if you have children; an estate plan can protect your assets and ensure your wishes are followed. It will even help you while you’re still living. We invite you to take advantage of a complimentary review of your personal situation and current plan, if any, and to discuss what changes might be necessary to provide the best protection for you and for your family.

Boston Bound VALLEY RUNNING GROUP TRAINS FOR BOSTON MARATHON

10

AT H LE T E LIF E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

Spring is an excellent time to get outside and go for a run. Wondering how you can get started running? There are several running groups and runners across the West Valley that can offer support and insights. One group of runners here in North Peoria (Club Sando) is stepping up its game, taking its goals on the road and preparing to run the famed Boston Marathon. We chatted with a few runners to get their thoughts about why they run, how they’re preparing for the Boston Marathon and tips for new runners.

Nate Cottrell says running is in his blood

RUNNING IS IN HIS BLOOD

TRAINING AS A GROUP

Peoria-area resident Nate Cottrell started running when he was younger, participating in track, cross country and local races. “I developed a love for it. I did go through some time periods of a year or so without running, but I always come back. So, 37 years later, I’m still at it. It gets in your blood.” Preparing to run the Boston Marathon is the pinnacle for Cottrell. “Qualifying for Boston is a running-industry standard. I had run a handful of marathons and always felt I did poorly. I started thinking marathons were just not my thing. Then my wife started really getting interested in going to visit Boston. I jokingly told her the only way we’re going is if I qualify for the Boston Marathon. She was all in and I had a life goal.” For Cottrell, it isn’t just about running, it is also about how it makes him feel overall. “It helps me stay in shape and keeps my weight down. The physical nature, effort and difficulty are the joy. Getting through a long run, and realizing at the end that hey, I just did that!”

Cottrell isn’t alone in his journey, as he is training with a group of friends to prepare for Boston, including Steve and Gina Sando and Abbie Tuomi. Steve and Gina Sando have been running together for years, starting out simple. “I didn’t really get serious with training until after college when I was looking to do something competitive but also relatively safe,” explains Steve. “My wife Gina began doing some local 5k races and we started running them together. It is the community, competition and finish line emotions that had us start stepping up the distance with 10ks, half marathons and then marathons.” Steve explains that running offers many benefits. “Running has brought us great friends, a wonderful running community and a positive example for our children.” For Sando, this isn’t his first Boston Marathon, and he is excited to be running alongside his wife and running crew. Gina Sando shares in her husband’s excitement, saying running is a great outlet for her. “When I started CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/N O RT HP E O R I A

running, I wasn’t sure what I was doing but it was a great way to keep me outside for long periods of time, and I actually started to enjoy it.” After a few years of on-and-off running, Gina and Steve incorporated running races into vacations, and it became much more fun and a bigger part of daily life. “I began studying the science behind running and learning how to structure a training program to prevent injuries and learning the importance of training at different paces.” Once they started running with friends, Gina found another love for the sport. “Socially, I love starting off my days with a run with friends before the day truly begins.” As for Boston, Gina isn’t shy about her feelings about the race. “It is a bucket list for most marathoners due to the strict qualifying guidelines. For recreational runners, qualifying and being accepted into Boston is like the Olympics for a professional runner. After I ran my first marathon, I knew someday I wanted to run in Boston because of how challenging it would be to get there.” For Abbie Tuomi, running has always been a passion. She has been running for more than 30 years. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been super competitive. I absolutely loved doing the mile run in elementary school, always trying to win and break the school record.” She fell in love with long-distance running after she completed her first marathon in 2017. “I instantly fell in love with the distance, and I have trained extremely hard over the past six years to improve my time and qualify for Boston.”

Not only did Tuomi qualify, but she also qualified for all the major marathons, and with her upcoming run in Boston, she will be attempting to qualify for the 2024 Olympic trials.

ADVICE FOR NEW RUNNERS

Abbie Tuomi is trying to qualify for the 2024 Olympic trials

Gina Sando says her advice for anyone wanting to get into running is to start slow. “When most people start running, they tend to go out too fast, as if they are racing. That is a quick way to get hurt and not enjoy it. If you are just starting out, keep your runs—or walk/run—at an easy, conversational pace.” Tuomi says running is worth any obstacles. “Don’t be afraid or discouraged to start. It is definitely hard at first, but use that as fuel.” She recommends setting a goal for yourself whether running a mile without stopping or completing a marathon, goals are key. She also recommends surrounding yourself with other runners to stay motivated and inspired.

GET RUNNING While running the Boston Marathon is a great goal, that isn’t the only way to get involved in the sport. Finding a running group such as the one with Tortoise & Hare Sports (Tortoise and Hare Run Club at tortoiseandharesports.com/runclub) is a great way to get out on the road. Other Valley run clubs include Arizona Road Racers Running, Runner’s Den and Quest Club. If you are new to running, start with a great pair of running shoes fitted to your feet to help ensure you have all the right tools. Then hit one of the many trails here in North Peoria and Arrowhead!

OCEAN ADVENTURES

Small Ship Cruising in the Mediterranean and the South Pacific ARTICLE BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

16

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

Cruising is one of my favorite ways to travel. There are a lot of options for cruise ships. You can go on an ocean cruise, a river cruise or even a barge cruise (see the July 2022 issue for my favorite barge cruise experience). I love river cruises because you never feel the movement of the boat and you usually dock in the middle of a town, making it easy to get on and off to explore. But ocean cruises hold a certain sense of excitement as you set sail. If you decide on an ocean cruise, there are many options. I’m going to highlight two very different small-ship ocean cruises that my husband and I recently took.

WINDSTAR CRUISE TO FRENCH POLYNESIA

OUR FIRST NIGHT IN PARADISE

Windstar Cruises offers small-ship cruises in French Polynesia. We took a 7-night cruise exploring the islands of Tahiti, Moorea, Raiatea, Bora Bora and Huahine.

The biggest surprise for me was discovering that the flight time to Tahiti was about the same as a trip to Hawaii. We flew to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and then caught a 6-hour overnight flight directly to Papeete, Tahiti. We made the wise decision to arrive one day before our cruise so we could spend a full day and night in Papeete. I always prefer this on international flights. Since the planes typically land in the early morning, we booked a full-day stay at the hotel along with our overnight, so we were able to check in when we arrived

ABOUT WINDSTAR CRUISES Windstar has two different types of boats: all-suite motor yachts that carry 312 passengers and sleek sailing yachts that carry 148 passengers. We were on the Star Breeze motor yacht (which spends summers in Alaska). Since it’s a smaller boat, I did feel the movement more than on one of the larger cruise ships, but that was an okay trade-off for me to be on a more intimate cruise. Days that we anchored, the boat ran water taxis to shore, and the back swimming platform was open for swimming, snorkeling and standup paddleboarding. The Windstar staff makes the journey even more memorable. They remembered our names and even what we liked to drink— greeting me each evening with a glass of champagne when we stopped by Compass Rose to listen to the entertainment.

at the hotel at 6 a.m. After a lovely breakfast, we spent the day chilling on the double loungers looking out over the South Pacific. We were completely rested by the time we left for the cruise the next day at noon.

OUR CRUISE OF FRENCH POLYNESIA Our first port of call was Moorea, which turned out to be my favorite. We hired a driver to show us the sights. My favorite excursion was the photography workshop on Moorea. A local photographer picked us up at the dock and we climbed into an open 4x4 Jeep. We went all over the island to find the best photo spots and even drove to the top of the mountains for spectacular views across the bay. Bora Bora is a much-anticipated destination because of its beautiful turquoise bay. The boat anchors for two days there, giving passengers a chance to explore. I did some shopping and

18

came home with a beautiful black Tahitian pearl ring while my husband hiked Mount Otemanu. On our last night in Bora Bora, Windstar transported all the passengers via catamaran to a motu (one of the small islets surrounding Bora Bora) for a private sunset dinner. After a dinner featuring fresh fish, roasted pork and a massive spread of side dishes, we watched Polynesian fire dancers before making our way back to Star Breeze.

FOOD ON OUR WINDSTAR CRUISE Star Breeze has multiple dining venues and we liked them all, even the casual eateries. We enjoyed dinner at Amphora for a couple of nights. This is a fine dining restaurant with open seating. We had dinner one night at Candles, which is by reservation only but included in the price of our cruise. Seating is on the aft deck under the stars by candlelight. My favorite meal was Spanish tapas at Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso.

Pisa, Italy

VIKING OCEAN CRUISE IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN Our other small-ship cruise was with Viking. We love Viking River Cruises, so we decided to check out an ocean cruise. We chose the Iconic Western Mediterranean itinerary from Barcelona to Rome, one of the “Quiet Season Mediterranean Cruises” options. We went in November, so far fewer passengers than in high season, but the weather was still great. The 8-day cruise visits four countries and there are five included excursions.

river cruises. We were on the Viking Sky, which holds 930 guests. The ship is fairly new, having just launched in 2017. It has seven decks, with a fitness center, Nordic spa, pool, multiple restaurants and a sports deck.

EXPLORING ROME We flew into Rome a day before the cruise. The port is in Civitavecchia, about an hour north of Rome, so we wanted a little time to relax, get over jet lag and explore before heading to the ship.

ABOUT VIKING OCEAN CRUISES Viking is sometimes called the “thinking person’s cruise” because it focuses on cultural enrichment. You receive information before the cruise about movies or books that highlight the destination. While onboard, a resident expert gives presentations and many of the excursions focus on history and culture. There are nine boats in the Viking ocean fleet and all of them have the same minimalist Scandinavian theme you find on the

Village of Sète, France

We stayed at the beautiful Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese, and it was a perfect start to our trip. The hotel is on a quiet street with easy walking to Piazza di Spagna, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. After a day of exploring, we dined at Settimo Roman Cuisine & Terrace, with breathtaking views over the city. I had a fish special that evening that I would fly back to Rome to enjoy again. Breakfast was served in the same restaurant the next morning and the assortment of choices was impressive. For about $100, we booked a car and driver to take us to the dock.

OUR MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE Our eight days were divine. I loved getting off the ship and exploring the ports. Viking includes a complimentary excursion at each port, with more day trips available for an additional charge. We saw the Leaning Tower in Pisa, watched expensive cars zip through the winding streets of Monte Carlo, wandered through the fishing village of Sète and explored Barcelona.

Basílica de la Sagrada Familia

I make a point of stopping in at local cafés when I travel, and this trip was no exception. One morning, we watched the fishmongers deliver fresh seafood to restaurants in Sète. Another day, we nibbled on Spanish tapas in Barcelona with views of the famous La Sagrada Familia towering overhead.

LIFE ONBOARD VIKING SKY When we weren’t out wandering through winding streets, we soaked up our time onboard Viking Sky. We enjoyed dinners in The Restaurant, where the staff was very attentive and brought me unique wines to sample. We spent quiet afternoons reading and watching the sea from the Explorer’s Lounge at the front of the ship. I enjoyed afternoon tea twice in Wintergarden, just off the main pool and spent another afternoon in a wine tasting hosted by the sommelier. Each evening, we made our way to Torshavn, cheering each other with a nightcap while listening to live music.

A Weekend to Discover Your Happy Place in the Red Rocks of Sedona

I always tell people Sedona is my happy place. There is something so magical and emotional about driving into the canyon and seeing those red rocks. Just two hours north of Peoria, Sedona is the ideal weekend escape. With its great food, hiking for all skill levels, vibrant arts community and the most incredible sunsets, I can almost guarantee that you’ll discover your own happy place among the Red Rocks of Sedona.

THE SEDONA WEATHER Sedona is markedly cooler all year-round than in the Valley of the Sun. During April, days reach the mid-70s while nights still dip into the mid-40s, making it ideal for snuggling outdoors by a fire pit. March usually gets rain, so April is the season for blooms in Sedona. This is the beginning of Sedona’s busy season, but it is the ideal time for enjoying the trails and some great shopping as you explore the art scene.

TAKE A JEEP TOUR I do recommend that everyone book a Pink Jeep Tour in Sedona at least once. I did the 2-hour Broken Arrow tour, which is the company’s most popular—and most extreme—off-road trek. You climb into the open-back jeep and head out with your guide to places you can only explore with licensed outfitters. The highlight is the Road-of-No-Return which makes almost everyone squeal. The views are stunning and standing there on the buttes, gazing for miles in every direction, is definitely a happy place. Here are some more must-do things for your weekend in Sedona.

24

R OA D T R IP | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

Hiking in Sedona Sedona has more than 400 miles of trails varying from easy strolls to challenging climbs. The popular Cathedral Rock Trail is 1.2 miles. The moderate trail is sometimes steep in places but offers spectacular views of Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock. Margs Draw Trail is a lesser-used easy and flat trail, four miles out and back. This is a good family trail with views of Snoopy Rock.

Staying in Sedona

Eating in Sedona

Shopping in Sedona

There are dozens of hotels and inns in Sedona, making it easy to find something that fits every budget. Consider Arabella Sedona. It’s a welcoming hotel with large rooms and swinging chairs on the patios. Outdoor firepits are ideal for the evenings. Pick up a cruiser bike for exploring or walk to nearby shopping. The highlight of the pet-friendly hotel is the short stroll to the bluff for 360-degree sunset views. Arabella is steps from Margs Draw Trail.

Sedona is a foodie’s paradise! Molé, part of Arabella Sedona, serves classic Mexican dishes with a modern interpretation. Willows Kitchen & Wine offers eclectic American cuisine. I recommend starting with the artichoke flatbread. The short ribs and lamb lollipops are both scrumptious. There is also a knowledgeable sommelier offering an impressive wine list. For something fun and casual, stop by Jay Bird’s Chicken. A prickly pear margarita goes quite well with chicken and waffles!

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village (pronounced T-lockey-pockey) is synonymous with Sedona. The village, created about 40 years ago, blends Sedona and Old Mexico. There are 45 shops with artwork, clothing, collectibles and more. If you stay at Arabella Sedona, I recommend walking the half-mile to Tlaquepaque. Along the way, you can stop by Hillside Sedona Shopping Center for a quick nibble or to check out the galleries.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

island

ADVENTURES When you’re craving island time, head north to the Pacific Northwest. On a recent trip, I discovered the beauty of the Kitsap Peninsula (VisitKitsap.com) and Bainbridge Island (VisitBainbridgeIsland.org). Kitsap Peninsula proclaims it is “the Natural Side of Puget Sound” and you see that when you visit. The pace is slower. Time seems to be relative. The natural beauty surrounds you. It is a place to stop and smell the flowers. With multiple 3-hour nonstop flights from Phoenix to Seattle each day, you can be living on island time by the end of the day.

GETTING THERE IS PART OF THE FUN After landing at SeaTac airport, you can grab a rideshare to take you to the Seattle Ferry Terminal. You can walk on or, if you’ve chosen to rent, drive onto the ferry. Grab a beverage onboard and watch Seattle slip away as you approach the tree-covered islands in the distance. It takes about 35 minutes to cross Puget Sound, arriving at the historic main street on Bainbridge Island.

EXPLORING BAINBRIDGE ISLAND When you arrive at the ferry station on Bainbridge, you’ll find yourself on Winslow Way, the island’s historic main street. I recommend starting off with a great cup of coffee. Pegasus Coffee, located a block off Winslow, opened on the island in 1980. This is coffee the way coffee is meant to be served—locally roasted, freshly brewed and poured with love. Don’t forget to sample one of the donuts while you’re there! CONTINUED >

Back on Winslow Way, you can spend the day wandering through shops, galleries and boutiques. Step into Bainbridge Arts & Crafts (BACART.org) to get a feel for the art culture on the Island. The nonprofit gallery supports more than 200 local artists and provides art education to more than 10,000 youth, adults and seniors each year. If you’re looking to pick up a snack, stop into Mora Iced Creamery for ice cream made using local and sustainably sourced ingredients. Or perhaps you’d like local fudge and truffles from Bon Bon or the most amazing croissants this side of France at Coquette Bake Shop. Art is a way of life on Bainbridge Island, and you can mingle with artisans, artists and craftsmen at the First Friday Art Walk and the Bainbridge Island Moonlight Market, which runs from 5 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month from May through October.

HISTORY AND NATURE ON BAINBRIDGE ISLAND The Americans of Japanese heritage living on Bainbridge Island were the first to be forcibly removed from their homes and sent to internment camps during World War II. Visit the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial for a beautiful yet somber look at the impact of the war on this small community. To experience the natural beauty of Bainbridge Island, wander the beautiful grounds at Bloedel Reserve (BloedelReserve.org). I recommend you take time to walk the Orchid Trail, tour the residence and explore the Japanese guest house.

EATING AND SLEEPING ON BAINBRIDGE ISLAND You can count on great food while you’re in the Pacific Northwest. I recommend Bruciato (PizzeriaBruciato. com) for dinner. The restaurant is owned by James Beard nominee Brendan McGill. He pulls many of the restaurant’s ingredients either from Italy, his own farm on the island or other local sources. My Neapolitaninspired wood-fired pizza featured mushrooms foraged from the Olympic Peninsula. Make sure you get an order of the meatballs—you won’t regret it! For a real treat, book one of the weekly community dinners at Heyday Farm (HeydayFarm.com). Owners Tadao and Tifanie Mitsui serve the most amazing locally-sourced meals in an exquisite garden setting. The dahlias were in bloom during my visit and strolling the gardens with a glass of Washington wine before eating was pure bliss.

After so much exploring, you’re going to want a great place to rest. I recommend The Inn at Pleasant Beach Village (PleasantBeachVillage.com). The hotel sits on beautiful, manicured grounds, just a block from the waterfront. It is in a walkable village with great dining and shopping options. The rooms are comfortable and welcoming with a fireplace and a beautiful patio or balcony.

EXPLORING KITSAP PENINSULA Head north off Bainbridge Island and cross the Agate Passage Bridge to Kitsap Peninsula. I recommend stopping at Suquamish Museum (suquamish. nsn.us), which sits just north of the bridge. The museum is a great introduction to the area and the Suquamish People. Head to the northern tip of Kitsap Peninsula to visit Point No Point Lighthouse. While you can’t climb the lighthouse, you can kick off your shoes and walk in the sand, watching the locals fish. Keep your eyes peeled— you might spot whales just off the shore here. You won’t want to miss the town of Port Gamble (PortGamble.com), which has one of the most intriguing histories ever. The entire town, now a 120-acre National Historic Landmark, began as a company town in 1853 for the Talbot & Pope sawmill. It remained in operation until the end of 1995. The town is now owned entirely by Rayonier Inc., which acquired Pope & Talbot in 2020. The company keeps Port Gamble to showcase the local and company history. You can wander through restored buildings now serving as restaurants and shops. Visit Port Gamble Historic Museum, which accurately portrays life in Port Gamble. I recommend stopping for lunch at Butcher & Baker Provisions (ButcherandBakerProvisions.com). The fried chicken sandwich is unforgettable! I adore the little town of Poulsbo, dubbed “Little Norway” for its Norwegian heritage. Wander through little shops and eat your way down the main street. Stop by Slippery Pig Brewery (SlipperyPigBrewery. com) for great beer, food and Puget Sound views. I also enjoyed Poulsbo Maritime Museum (PoulsboHistory.com/Poulsbo-maritime-museum), which details the area’s rich maritime history, covering everything from water sports and commercial fishing to ferries and logging. Your island time in the Pacific Northwest will show you the beauty of Puget Sound and leave you wanting to explore more.

BENEVILLA BENEFITNESS ADAPTIVE GYM The Benefitness programs are designed to improve participants’ physical efficiencies, mental acuity, strength, balance, and overall well-being. Unlike a typical gym, Benefitness provides adaptive equipment for individuals in wheelchairs, people with limited motion and those who are differently abled. “Our programs will help improve the quality of life of our members, improve their strength and balance and improve their ability to perform routine tasks of daily life,” explains Karn.

Making Physical Fitness and a Healthy Lifestyle Available to Everyone The Benevilla Benefitness Adaptive Gym ensures that physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle are no longer out of reach for anyone. Lorrie Karn, the Director of Benefitness, and her team of specially trained and nationally certified coaches provide customized and individual fitness programs and classes to help strengthen those with early onset diagnoses and physical ailments (such as Parkinson’s, dementia, MS and more).

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AT BENEFITNESS Benefitness Adaptive Gym is located on the Surprise campus of the non-profit Benevilla (Benevilla.org) at 16752 N. Greasewood St., Surprise, 85378. For example: • Functional Movement, which works on balance and stability as well as flexibility and joint range of motion • Seated Stretch, which focuses on muscle elongation and joint range of motion. • Cardio on the Move is a perfect trifecta incorporating cardiovascular training, muscular resistance training and core development.

ROCK STEADY BOXING HELPS THOSE WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE Benefitness is one of only 900 worldwide locations offering “Rock Steady Boxing,” a unique exercise program developed specifically for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Rock Steady Boxing uses the mechanics of boxing to focus on PD symptoms including balance, stiffness, tremors, coordination and soft voice syndrome. The neurosensory stimulus from the exercises slows the progression of PD and quiets the day-to-day symptoms. This is accomplished through non-contact boxing, punching a heavy bag, doing footwork, stretching, resistance exercises and aerobic training. Benefitness also provides “Beneboxing” for those who do not have Parkinson’s Disease but wish to benefit from boxing-inspired workouts.

SHOW SOME LOVE TO CAREGIVERS A unique and special “Caregiver Retreat” provides comfortable seating, massage chairs, a soothing water feature and a conversation area. Sleep Inside, Outside

Photography by Valtteri Hirvonen

3 Incredible places to (literally) sleep under the stars

It’s always magical to spend a night sleeping under the stars. In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience. For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors. Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.

Photography by Pacuare Lodge

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland These arctic igloos make Urho Kekkonen National Park look like a dreamy winter wonderland. Snuggle up inside the glassroofed globe and watch the dancing northern lights overhead. Get immersed in the world of northern lights, midnight sun and other miracles of this world-renowned arctic resort. Just bundle up before stepping outside – temperatures can drop to -22 degrees!

Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns.

Amangiri, Utah In southern Utah, Amangiri is a five star resort perfect for an adventurous weekend in the desert. However, it is the simple rooms built to emphasize the beauty of Canyon Point that truly make it an incredible place to stay. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace with private pools or rooftop terraces available too. Don’t miss a dip in the ‘gram-worthy pool, which wraps around the landscape’s curved dunes and arid plateaus.
